victory. aja wilson and brianna stewart combined for 46 of those points in the dominant performance. they look for their eighth consecutive gold medal. the u.s. has 20 total medals so far. jay gray will be live later in the show with a preview of today's events. let's turn now to the political competition heating up here at home. north carolina governor roy cooper has pulled his name out of consideration to be the running mate for kamala harris. nbc's brie jackson joins us now. good morning, brie. how did the governor explain this decision? >> reporter: good morning, frances. governor roy cooper says he still strongly supports the vice president's campaign for president, but he does not feel like it's the right time for north carolina for him to be on a national ticket. a source directly involved with the search for a running mate said cooper took himself out of consideration because he wants to run for the senate in two

years. there are other governors in the mix, including minnesota's tim walz, kentucky's andy beshear. michigan's gretchen whitmer and josh shapiro. they all hit the campaign trail over the last few days to support the vice president. the harris campaign is expected to choose a running mate by august 7th. the harris team has called for a week of action on abortion rights and the supreme court. vice president harris has joined president biden in calling for dramatic changes for the nation's highest court. >> i have great respect for our institutions, in the separation of powers laid out in our constitution. but what's happening now is not consistent with that doctrine of separation of powers. extremism is undermining the public confidence in the court's decisions. >> reporter: the president is calling for a constitutional amendment to hold presidents accountable for crimes committed in office.

arrested in connection with the attack. authorities say they do not suspect a terrorist or political motive. for the latest, let's bring in megan fitzgerald in london. what more do we know? >> reporter: frances, good morning. good to be with you. look, we're talking about every parent's worst nightmare. we know yesterday morning, monday morning, that the 17-year-old walked into this facility where children, ages 7 to 11 years old were participating in this taylor swift-themed event and then started going on a stabbing rampage. we know that at least two children died. nine are, who are injured, of those nine, six are critically injured. now according to police, we understand there are two adults who are also injured. because they believe they were trying to shield them from this attacker. the 17-year-old, police believe, acted alone. he has been arrested on suspicion of murder and

attempted murder. we're talking about a horrifying scene. witnesses say they saw the moment people were carrying out these children covered in blood, rushing them out to try to get them to the hospital as soon as possible. you know, we are hearing from the newly-elected prime minister of the united kingdom, keir starmer. and i want you to listen to a little bit about what he had to say about this. >> our whole country is deeply shocked at what they've seen and what they've heard. and i know i speak for everybody and the whole country in saying, our thoughts and condolences with the victims, their families, their friends and the wider community. >> reporter: and the condolences will coming in from all across the united kingdom. we're also hearing from the royal family. in fact, i want to review this tweet from the prince and princess of wales. they said as parents, we cannot begin to imagine what the friends, families and loved ones

of those killed and injured in south port are going through. of course this is a tweet they released yesterday evening. you know, it's just a devastating situation that gets even worse, as we know that there are children in the hospital right now that are fighting for their lives. >> just so horrific, as it is senseless. megan, thank you. in northern california, the park fire rages on, growing to 370,000 acres, and only 14% contained. it is the sixth largest in california history, and the inferno has burned places still scarred from previous fires in the area. here's steve patterson. >> reporter: the nation's largest wildfire brazen and boundless. firefighters spread thin over the park fire, a threat zone now sprawling across four counties. in less than a week, growing into california's sixth-largest wildfire ever. according to cal fire, the biggest in state history are all from the last six years, an era of climate-driven fire seasons

that scientists say start sooner and last longer. >> seems to be just a tenuous cycle of these. and it wears on our community. >> reporter: thousands under evacuation alerts, dozens of homes destroyed, along with countless other close calls. >> i'm just very emotionally drained and grateful, grateful that we're alive. >> reporter: the park fire is just one of a hundred large, active wildfires. new evacuations in colorado, all of it sending plumes of smoke as far east as minneapolis. in central california, one blaze leveling this historic mining town. back in northern california, much of the burn zone covers areas repeatedly impacted by fire, including the 2018 camp fire that claimed the lives of 85 people in paradise, california. rick lost his home in paradise and thought this time his family was finally safe.

his cat survived the first fire only to perish here. >> seeing this was horrible again. it was sad, because we weren't here. we couldn't help him. >> reporter: two homes, six years, a lifetime of mementos and memories turned to ash. >> the third time is the charm. and i'm not sure what exactly that's going to look like. >> reporter: from nearly the very beginning, this fire was suspected as an arson. the arson suspect, 42-year-old ronny dean stout ii in court facing a judge briefly but now scheduled to be arraigned thursday. after court, the district attorney says he will seek federal criminal charges against suspect. nbc news has attempted to reach out to stout, his family, his legal team. we've heard nothing yet. we'll continue to follow this as the court case progresses. back to you. >> steve, thank you. a strong thunderstorm brought flash flooding to dolly parton's dollywood amusement

park. water rushed through walkways and into shops. according to a statement from dollywood, there was one minor injury during the flooding, a road collapsed and will need repairs. some areas are still closed for cleanup. let's turn now to angie lassman who is tracking those western wildfire alerts and new flood risks. >> we still have fire danger to talk about across parts of the west. casper, park city included in these red flag warnings. low humidity, elevated temperatures. prime conditions for fires to spark and continue to spread. as those fires burn in the pacific northwest, we've got plenty of smoke coming from that. that's working its way into parts of the northern plains as well as the midwest stretching into the great lakes. if you notice the haze in the air, that is why. we also have the flood risk we're going to talk about. we've got a cold front that's going to bring scattered showers
