"early today" starts right now. good morning, i'm frances rivera. team usa showed no signs of slowing down, as a new week dawned at the paris olympics monday. american athletes took home eight more medals from a third full day of events, remaining on top of the count with 20 total. among the day's historic performances were the women's rugby team. they will make their first-ever semifinals appearance this morning after their winning over great britain. it was just one of the many memorable moments that defined early olympic action for the u.s. nbc's tom llamas has the full recap. >> reporter: they deliver on electrifying routines after routine. fans here at the arena cheering

17-year-old suspect came inside on the stabbing rampage. we understand two children dead, nine others are injured. of those nine, six are critically injured. now we also understand, according to police, that two adults are also in critical condition this morning, after trying to step in, they believe, to try and protect these children. according to police, the 17-year-old suspect in custody, they believe he acted alone, and he is being held on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. we're talking about a horrifying scene here. witnesses saying they saw these children covered in blood, being rushed out of this facility, being rushed to the hospital as quickly as possible. we are hearing from people all over the uniteunited kingdom, i keir starmer, and i want you to listen to a little bit of what he had to say. >> our whole country is deeply

with arson, but he has not entered a plea. he will be back in court for arraignment on thursday. his lawyer has not responded to our request for comment. meanwhile, the fire rages on, growing more than 370 acres, and only 14% contained. in less than a week, the blaze has become the sixth largest in california history. dozens of homes are destroyed. let's turn to angie lassman with more on the smoke and the fire threats across the country. good morning, angie. >> unfortunately, that fire weather's going to continue in some spots across the country. notice the four corners region, cedar city all included in the red flag warnings with low humidity, elevated winds. prime conditions for the fires to spark and spread. we've got smoke from all those fires across the northwest working its way into the northern maplains and midwest. you notice haze in the sky in

leading the news. in houston, president biden paid his respects to sheila jackson lee. her body lying in state for ten hours in houston city hall. in the guest book, biden called her fearless, proud and bold. she died earlier this month at the age of 74 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. vice president kamala harris is scheduled to attend the congresswoman's funeral on thursday. fred goldman, the father of ron goldman, has filed a creditor's claim against the estate of o.j. simpson for $117 million. simpson was acquitted of the murders of his wife nicole brown simpson and her friend ron goldman in 1995. he was found liable in a civil case and ordered to pay the families nearly $34 million.

popularity in the u.s. you might not be so familiar with it. our national correspondent, steve kornacki is here with a look at that the look at the rules. >> let's talk about rugby sevens, it's an olympic sport. let's break down how to keep score in olympic rugby. sevens is the name of the game here. seven players on the field and two seven-minute halves. it's a short game. the goal of sevens is enough, to score points. the sim mesplest way of scoring points is getting a trial this is the layout of the rugby field. it does kind of look like a football field. the idea with the try is to get the ball into the other team's try zone.

it's a lot like possible. y football. this is the goal line, and this is the try zone, but what do you notice? players still running, that's because you don't score a try unless you actually put the ball on the ground in the try zone. so check this out. watch the play continue here in the try zone, and there, player at that point puts the ball on the ground. play stops. the try is scored. if the team gets a try, they then attempt a conversion. you've got to drop kick the ball, get it through the goalpost. the drop kick can be attempted from any distance you want from the goalpost. but here is the catch. it has to be in a direct line from where the try was scored. here's example where if the player had crossed into the try sh zone and puts the ball right here, you need to get a good angle to get the kick through the goalpost, which means you probably have to go back a pretty good distance to get that angle. this is why that player we just showed you kept running to the

middle of the try zone. look what happens, if you go down to the middle of the try zone you don't have to go far at all and you get a straight, simple conversion attempt. how many points is all this worth? the try itself is worth five points. if you can convert the try it's worth two points, a total possible of seven points. after a try, play restarts with one team drop kicking the ball toward the other team's end of the field. now, once someone has possession of the ball, there are three things they can do with it. this is one of them. they can kick the ball. the player kicks it straight downfield. this player kicks it hoping a teammate gets to it. you can pass the ball. the pass has to be either backwards to your teammate or lateral. this is like football. can y you cannot have a forward pass once you're running down the field. the other thing, you can run the ball yourself. take it all the way to the try zone or maybe you'll get missed
