with some clouds overhead. and as we go throughout the day, it's going to stay mostly cloudy at least through the morning. over the next several hours to about 10:00. we'll see those clouds linger and then clearing out as we go throughout the afternoon, temperatures gradually warming up. but it's going to be another nice one. only seeing high temperatures in the upper 70s in san jose, mid 70s for hayward. moraga today 80 degrees while vacaville will hit a high of 90, mostly low 80s in the north bay. it will be very much like yesterday, but then we are going to start to see things heating up for tomorrow as some of our inland valleys reach into the upper 80s and low 90s. we're up to 92 in morgan hill tomorrow afternoon, while napa will reach a high of 88 degrees and upper 60s in san francisco. the temperatures continue to ramp up on thursday. we'll see a lot more 90s in the inland valleys. concord reaching a high of 93 degrees and low 80s still for the south bay. so we'll be tracking all of the changes as

in the regular season for the a's. let's take a live look at the oakland coliseum this morning. the a's have already been officially eliminated from playoff contention, but what is up for contention? what to do with that space after the team leaves now? yesterday, the city of oakland announced a new deal to sell its share of the coliseum complex for $105 million to the african american sports and entertainment group. city officials claim it will help oakland avoid budget cuts for the police and fire departments. now here is oakland mayor sheng thao in a prepared statement on the significance of that deal. it's so exciting. what this means is this is a huge change, not only for the city, but for generations of oaklanders and for an area that has been underinvested in for so many decades. now, in a written statement, the mayor's office continues on to say that their agreement with the a, c, g is a

massive win for oakland. she says, quote, let me be clear. this isn't just a short term solution that keeps police and fire stations open. it's a deal that will lead to a multibillion dollar investment in east oakland, which will bring business opportunities, affordable housing, tax revenue and community benefits for decades to come. but some are not convinced the oakland police officers union releasing their statement saying, quote, the opoa is doubtful that the sale of the oakland coliseum will solve the mayor's and the city council's epic mismanagement. we are deeply concerned for the safety of residents, businesses and our police officers. now, the mayor claims the sale will address the budgets, the city's budget shortfall. i should say. however, the developers have until 2026 to pay for the entire purchase in five installments. only $30 million will be expected by 2024. now, the oakland firefighters union says a budget could close up to five fire stations. that's about 20 to 25% of their fleet that

timeline for the firefighters would be cutting it. close agreement would be finalized at the towards the end of august. august 23rd. developers will pay within the first five days of that, leading a little bit closer to september, which is when firefighters are saying they need some of that money in order to avoid those cuts. we'll be keeping a close eye on this and bring you the latest on air. nbcbayarea.com laura. all right. i'll take it from here. ginger thank you. 505 for you this morning and republican vice presidential candidate j.d. vance continues his west coast campaign swing today in las vegas valley. this is before returning to the central valley tomorrow. now, last night, he returned to his stomping grounds. this is in silicon valley, attending the high price fundraiser at east palo alto four seasons. once there, he met with donors for about an hour. one photo shows the scene inside the event, hosted by bitgo ceo mike belshe. now outside, some waited for hours for a glimpse

5:21 am
this year, double that. we've had 12 days over 100 degrees. and even more for those 95 degree days. so the average high right now is running 95.9 degrees for that average high temperature. and this is now the hottest july in record for the tri valley. looking elsewhere across the bay area, also well above average temperatures. and so far, if we continue on this route, we are going to wrap up the month of july with, well above average temperatures and most likely setting some records as you average out those daily high temperatures today. it still feels nice. we're in the upper 70s in san jose and it's been nice to have this break. we will continue to see temperatures today in the 70s and 80s for the east bay upper 80s for antioch, but for oakland it will be 73 degrees in half moon bay, 64 degrees and 80 in redwood city, san francisco's back to the upper 60s. and for the north bay, we're going to

see highs ranging from mid 60s in bodega bay to ukiah, high temperature of 94 in santa rosa. we're looking at a high of about 84 degrees. and it gradually will warm up over the next few days. i'll be tracking that for you and we'll have another update. mike, you're starting out with the note about bart. yeah. while we look over here. emeryville behind me here, and getting over toward the bay bridge. everything is moving very smoothly. the flashing lights don't worry there in the parking lots, and they're just mostly security machines over there. we're looking over toward the bart system, where yesterday we did have that red line that was out of service early in the morning and then came back, and then it was out of service again starting about early afternoon, about midday. and so we have had no update. they didn't say it reopened, but they haven't been any postings about red line service yesterday. you did have to transfer at the macarthur station. so watch those overhead signs. we're still waiting for confirmation from the bart system. meanwhile, we're looking at highway 37. the only slowing that really shows up for the morning commute, right now on this tuesday. back to you. thanks, mike. well, next here on

would like to see the law change, to open up this kind of housing to everyone in the state and talk about housing that we built on school land. on august 14th, the superintendent will convene a housing summit to come up with other ideas on how to speed up housing development statewide. he says he's also sponsoring a bill that if passed, would raise teacher salaries by 50% by 2030. bob redell today in the bay all right, bob, thank you. in napa county, a woman was rushed to the hospital after she was hit by a police truck. it happened last night just after seven in calistoga at the intersection of berry street and washington street. it's unclear if she was in the crosswalk. she did suffer major injuries. there is no update on her condition. now to a live look in san francisco. this is where homeless advocates are expressing disappointment over the recent threat at the city and state level to crack down on encampments. mayor london breed now vowing to get tough with the unhoused who refuse city services. now, late

safety hazards involving driverless cars and young children. it was back in may when we first told you about our investigation. we surveyed 30 crossing guards stationed at more than 20 schools throughout san francisco and nearly one out of four told us they experienced some type of close call in the crosswalk with a driverless car operated by waymo. that's google's sister company. well, now san francisco's mayor london breed, is calling our findings concerning and we've also been told city officials now plan to meet with leaders at waymo next month to address the safety concerns. we've also been told training for school crossing guards has been revamped in the city to now include, for the first time, safety discussions specifically about driverless cars, and that new training begins next week. now you can get caught up on our full investigation right now on our website. that's nbcbayarea.com slash investigations with the investigative unit. i'm bigad shaban 544 for you right now and

those are the people that want to be president. the president, meanwhile, expanded on his ideas to reform the supreme court. biden wants a constitutional amendment that establishes presidents are not above the law, and another amendment adding term limits to the high court. second thing i'm asking for we've had term term limits for presidents of the united states for nearly 75 years after the truman administration, and i believe we should have term limits for supreme court justices of the united states as well. some critics have called biden's ideas unconstitutional. of course, any proposed revision to the constitution is outside the constitution until it's adopted. amendments, though, take years, likely decades. and j.d. vance was here in the bay area monday, raising money for the race at the four seasons in east palo alto. we'll tell you more about that. marcus at the top of the hour. all right. thanks so much, scott. all righ. with new school year around the corner, san jose's sacred heart

chris, are you about to hit the vault? the balance beam. what do you got for us this morning? i was a big summer salter back in my day. not professionally trained, self-taught. so it's kind of nice to be here at twisters gymnastics in santa clara. they are very excited. they're actually opening the doors and they will be hosting a watch party for anybody who wants to come watch ■team usa today. one of the owners is allen fuzzyleo. thanks so much for joining us. you're a gymnast yourself. you were at cal. yeah, yeah, 1994 to 1998. and what was your big event? my big event before i got hurt was rings. oh, wow. yeah. wow. what did you think of the men's competition last night? i saw that little clark kent moment. yeah. incredible. incredible. i think the guys haven't won a medal since 2008. yes. so, yeah, it ends a 16 year drought, but i think it was more of the character of the guys. that was really fun to watch. yeah, really exciting. i mean this doesn't happen overnight obviously. you know, we heard simone biles saying that she got
8:27 am
her start. she was like six years old and she was just watching some of the big girls doing things, and she was trying to imitate them. and that's when the coach approached the parent and said, hey, maybe she should do gymnastics. yeah. i mean, that's how it that's how it starts. and usually it starts in an olympic year. kids get inspired by people like simone biles. yeah, you know, our we've gotten a lot of people just wanting to do trial classes just because they're inspired by her. well, and we see two little ones over here that are inspired as well. we have remy, who is in the red shirt. she's actually pretty competitive. that's your older daughter. your younger daughter. is benton there? and, she's seven. so how is it to go from i think i might want to try it to elite competition, it's a process, and what we do here is we kind of go with how the kid, what the kid is giving us. and that's always been our philosophy, remy. from a very early age, since she was five

years old, always wanted to be a high level gymnast. and we've kind of groomed her into being a really independent kid who actually trains by herself because her mom and i are teaching recreational and in the lower levels, so we just keep an eye on her. but she makes her own conditioning. she does her own schedule. we give her feedback, obviously, but you know, she's grown into a pretty independent, strong kid. and that's what i that's what we love about it. i mean, she just looks so relaxed and just so natural and like, it's unbelievable how hard that would be for a regular person. yeah, it takes years of training. she starred in the tops program at ussag and then you know, we decided that the elite path wasn't for our family. we have a special needs daughter who is not here, who's our middle child, so remy's goal is to, compete in college. that is exciting. and she's about she's

about the age where they start recruiting is what you were telling me. yeah. so next year. yeah, she'll be at that age. okay, so we, twisters is opening the doors so that people can come in and watch in community. it's always much more fun that way. you can't see it right now, but they're projecting it up on the gym's screen. so anybody who comes in, they're going to be sitting on, you know, these bouncy floors that we see simone biles like bouncing all over on. and, you know, if you want to get your kids inspired and get them thinking about physical movement, there's so little of that in school nowadays, maybe this is a good opportunity to get together. some are still in full force. so doors open. the competition is at nine. i believe you guys will correct me if i'm wrong, but, certainly a fun way to experience the olympics. yeah. isn't that part of it? i mean, i feel like we all watch the games and everyone's inspired in some way of like, wow, if i could have done that, or maybe i'll swim, or maybe i'll do i. well, actually, yeah. our, our time is probably passed. well, you know, maybe i think if they have

82 today and upper 60s for san francisco. for the north bay it will be in the mid 60s near the coast and as hot as 94 in ukiah. today we've been talking about the heat returning over the next few days. high pressure moving in. that's going to push back our natural ac and give us more of an offshore wind as the jet stream remains just to our north. so take a look at the trend in our temperatures that goes from mid 80s in our warmer spots today to low 90s, and then we'll see some mid 90s for the weekend. unfortunately, it looks like it gets even hotter early next week. but for san francisco it's nice and cool here. as the fog continues, highs will reach into the 60s. and mike, what's going on with that crash in san jose? well you know we see this slowing still on this camera. north 101. this is approaching two the 8680 interchange. and in fact the slowing starts back around tully almost story road and tully road as you're getting northbound on 101. but the crash is on the shoulder still a distraction. there's a sedan and another pickup truck as well, and so folks can have lanes

clear, but they still distracted, and that's the slower stretch. it has not rippled on to 280. i'm hoping this will improve shortly because this is probably the end of the first burst of traffic. and then again, the next one kicks in about 640 in the morning. everything else looks standard for the bay. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. well, happening now, parts of the san jose state university campus in the dark this morning because pg&e repair work in downtown san jose. crews are actually replacing the underground transformer near the school. and they say that many campus operations were shut down yesterday, including the school's library. pg&e says that it hopes to have power fully restored by today. as you heard from kris moments ago, excitement growing for team usa's gymnastics team. but what about the athletes competing in the triathlon? it's been postponed twice. now we're going to take you out live to paris this morning where there are concerns over whether the event will need to be relocated. relocated
