highlights. we begin in the presidential race. nbc's senior correspondent hallie jackson has the latest from this. hey, hallie. >> hey, hoda. good morning to you. former president trump says he will probably end up debating vice president harris. although he did not commit to it. as harris prepares to head to the swing state of georgia today getting ready to select a running mate as mr. trump now defends his. the presidential race taking shape this morning with vice president kamala harris set to hit the campaign trail and former president donald trump in a new interview backing up his new running mate, senator jd vance. >> he's got tremendous support. among a cert people that like families. >> reporter: the former president referencing vance's controversial comments from 2021, critical of democrats without children. >> we are effectively run in this country, via the democrats, via our corporate oligarchs by a bunch of childless cat ladies. >> he's not against anything but he loves family. >> reporter: mr. trump also

that running against kamala harris against president biden was a little bit of a sucker punch according to the post obtained by "the washington post". adding kamala is a lot younger and not struggling in the same ways biden did. a vance spokesperson saying, quote, harris' far left ideas are more radioactive than joe biden. harris is set to decide on a running mate by next week. one major contender out. roy cooper withdrawing his name from consideration overnight. >> so hallie with a top candidate like roy cooper bowing out, where do things stand? in the search? do we have a shorter list? >> we have a somewhat shorter list now, savannah, with the top contenders, including pennsylvania governor, josh shapiro alongside michigan's gretchen whitmer who is on the list but suggested she prefers to stay in the governor's mansion. also in the mix, you have

minnesota tim wolf fe and mark kelly. they are out this morning with what the campaign calls its first major tv ad buy. you're looking at it here. since kamala harris entered the race just about a week ago, the first big ad buy, savannah. but undoubtedly not the last. >> all right. hallie jackson in washington, thank you. former president trump has agreed to be interviewed by the fbi into part of the investigation into his attempted assassination. trump was struck in the ear during a campaign rally in butler, pennsylvania, on july 13th. the gunman, 20-year-old thomas matthew crooks was shot by secret service snipers after the assassination attempt. his motive still unknown. meantime, the new acting director of the secret service is set to appear before a senate panel today after the security failures on the day of that shooting. president biden is calling for sweeping changes on the supreme court saying yesterday that extremism on the court is undermining public confidence in the institution. the president is urging congress

to impose term limits, capping justices at 18 years on the high court. he's also calling for a binding code of conduct, focused on financial disclosures and conflicts of interest. >> the court is not self-policing. the court is not dealing with the obvious conflicts of interest. we need a mandatory code of ethics for the supreme court, and we need it now. >> president biden is also proposing a constitutional amendment to hold presidents accountable for crimes committed in office. no immunity. however, none of the proposed changes are likely to pass in a closely divided congress. turning now to the growing wild fire emergency. more than 100 are now burning across the u.s., including that massive park fire in northern california. it continues to spread devastation and smoke with families forced to evacuate now returning to find their homes in ruin. al is here. he's going to track all the fires and more of this extreme

weather. but first let's get to nbc's steve patterson. he joins us from chico with the very latest. hey, steve. good morning. >> reporter: hoda, this fire just keeps drying. it is feasting on this bone dry brush less than a week and it's half the size of rhode island. 370,000 acres. the sixth largest wild fire in california history. firefighters battling the park fire, hoping to take advantage of cooler weather this week to increase containment of this massive blaze. thousands are under evacuation alerts. dozens of homes destroyed, along with countless close calls. >> family and friends were like, you got to get out of there. i decided to stay. had a couple people with me to fight the fire. we knew it was going to be bad. we just didn't know how bad it was going to be. >> reporter: the man accused of starting the wild fire, appearing in court for the first time. facing felony arson charges. in central california, the

53,000 fire leveling this historic mining town, and nearly trapping two sheriff deputies. >> we appear to be surrounded by fire. >> 10-4. >> reporter: thankfully, the officers survived. in northern california, much of the burn zone covers areas that have been repeatedly impacted by wild fires, including paradise, california, where 85 people died in 2018. amid the devastation, moments of joy. these puppies and their mother stuck when their mother's truck broke down were rescued by sheriffs. a small victory as the war against wild fires rages on. and the good news is that firefighters are making progress as well. 14% containment now on this fire. they're pushing it away from city centers, away from places like paradise and chico, but there is more hot, dry weather in the forecast. elevating the danger. hoda? >> all right. steve patterson for us there. in chico, california. steve, thank you. let's bring in al who has been tracking this fire danger

and more across the country. hi, al, good morning. >> good morning. take a look. you can see 9 million people right now under fire weather watches or warnings. strong winds, low, relative humidity, so this will be a problem. and the fires that are already burning, causing big problems as far as smoke is concerned. we're talking about smoke from california on into the great lakes, central plains. in fact, unhealthy air quality alerts right now stretching for 9 million folks from washington state on into colorado. plus, look at what's going on right now. severe weather in tennessee. this is middle tennessee state university. an equipment trailer getting blown, football trailer getting blown by strong winds, all part of a system making its way in here. let's take a look and show you the radar. you can see strong storms, thunderstorms moving through the ohio river valley. also minneapolis down to des moines. another area of strong storms. 18 million people at risk for severe weather today. wind gusts again, 75 miles per hour or more, could be a tornado or two.

[ usa, usa ] the americans providing one dominant routine after another. >> are you kidding me right now! >> reporter: brody malone, the only returning olympian leading the young team after re-learning how to walk just last year following a brutal knee injury. >> it is an incredible feeling any time you get to wear usa on your chest, but especially at the olympic games. >> reporter: but it was this final performance that sealed the deal from the unassuming athlete fans have dubbed, clark kent. steven showing his super powers

announcement for the highly-anticipated men's triathlon now postponed until tomorrow. world triathlon saying that after some heavy rain over the weekend, water tests showed that quality in the seine is not safe enough for competition. adding readings at some points of the swim course are still above the acceptable limits. on the clay, a clash of tennis titans. rafael nadal and novak djokovic facing off in what could be their last matchup. eventually djokovic prevailing. >> let's see this. this ought to be sweet. >> reporter: on the women's side, 20-year-old american coco gauff, still racking up wins in paris. and on the other court, the u.s. men's basketball team dominating japan in their opening game, notching their 56th straight olympic win. and finally, team usa heel flipping to the podium in the men's skateboarding street final. jagger eaton snagging silver.

announced a new deal to sell its share of the coliseum complex for $105 million to the african american sports and entertainment group. city officials claim this will help the city avoid budget cuts for the police and fire departments. the oakland police officers union says it's doubtful that the sale will solve the mayor and city council's epic mismanagement. we'll have more details on that. press conference at nbcbayarea.com. summer school students at san jose state may have to adjust today. that's because the campus is still being impacted by a power outage that started yesterday. utility crews are in the process of replacing an underground transformer near the school, and the main library is among the facilities being affected. pg&e hopes to have power fully restored within the next few hours. let's see what we are in store for weather wise with meteorologist kari hall. we have another really nice day on tap for the bay area as we take

couldn't go ahead. friday's spectacular opening ceremony came with incessant downpours. that heavy rain re-upping high risk levels of bacteria in the seine, forcing organizers to postpone the men's triathlon saying the river that flows through paris remains unsafe for paris. team usa triathlons saying conditions that force cancellations are not unusual and part of the sport. >> i'm just trying to focus on what i can control. i think me and my teammates are just trying to hope for the best and line up on race day and hopefully we get to swim. >> reporter: training sessions have been cancelled, too, this week though there were test events last august. >> to my knowledge, no one got sick, or at least i didn't. >> reporter: paris spent $1.5 billion cleaning up the seine where swimming has been banned for over 100 years due to pollution and boat traffic.

organizers touted revitalizing the river as a selling point for the games. the race has been planned for the heart of paris. from the world famous alexander iii bridge. to boost confidence, the mayor swimming in the river this morning, even president macron promising to take a dip. but backup plans include post poening the triathlon for a few days or canceling the swimming portion all together. officials say they're testing continually. the decision is being made every day. >> yeah, days and nights. >> reporter: meanwhile, connected to the seine offers open air swimming for all ages. >> cold but nice. >> reporter: this is the one place you can swim.today, when? so, i guess, if not today, when? it's cold! it's refreshing. next year they plan public

>> you're such a team leader. so i see you in kind of a like a little huddle before everyone goes out. you're saying something to everybody. i don't read lips. what were you saying to everybody in those moments? >> after every event we did a huddle to just kind of remind ourselves to stay in our bubble. we made ate big point to not watch any of the other teams. >> that's interesting. >> only focus on what we could control and that's our gymnastics. we tried to not even look at the scores. >> wow. >> i really am so struck at it. talk about this comradery the team has. sometimes gymnastics in the olympics get thrown together and find their way. you seem like this cohesive unit. what difference does that make? >> i mean, it makes the world of a difference. we all come from the ncaa. and the ncaa really, you know, is all about the team. and it's more than just yourself. you're competing for your brothers. we wanted to go out there and compete for each other and just have a lot of fun with each other and show off our gymnastics.

that massive wild fire in california has grown to more than 370,000 acres this morning. the park fire just north of chico is now the sixth largest fire in california history. more than 100 structures have been destroyed. thousands of others are threatened. meantime, the man accused of starting that wild fire appearing in court for the first time yesterday. 42-year-old ronny dean is facing felony arson charges. now to something we've been following all summer, those fast food price wars. popular chains have been rolling out value deals throughout the season to win back business, including mcdonald's. but now mcdonald's is reporting a surprise drop in sales for the first time in years. nbc's business correspondent brian cheung has been following this story for us. brian, good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning, guys. mcdonald's reported a worse than expected second quarter. but they're not the only ones seeing customers balking at higher prices. other fast food chains say they're experiencing issues in getting customers to the door as well.
