morning, an historic move for the city by the bay, san francisco becoming the first city in the nation to ban landlords from using artificial intelligence to set rent prices. the reason leaders believe it hinders your chances of making it in the bay. i did feel a lot of relief and as soon as i landed i was like, oh yeah, i'm definitely we're going to do this. golden once again. oh yes. the redemption for team usa gymnastics as they earned gold in the team finals. we are live from paris this morning with a look at how the team is soaking in all of that excitement after the big win. and a look at the bay area's athletes gearing up for the competition today. this is today in the bay good

wednesday morning. thanks for starting your morning with us. i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. we'll check in with mike in that morning commute in just a little bit. but let's talk about our forecast. is it golden this morning? kari i think so. although you can't see it, it's looking more silver right now because of the clouds moving again. but i think we'll take it and we will have a lot of sunshine today. our temperatures going up. and it's going to be just a touch warmer as we continue on a warming trend. it goes up a few more degrees tomorrow in the valleys, and then by friday we're going to feel some mugginess and watch out for the chance of dry lightning across the region. today we're starting out with mostly 50s and 60s and headed for the 60s and 70s from the coast to the peninsula. but the farther you go inland, the hotter those temperatures will be. it will be up to 99. in ukiah today, while in half moon bay it will be in the mid 60s. so we'll talk about that range in temperatures. mike, you've been watching the commute building up any. yeah. you know, san jose does show a typical pattern here for 101 just north of 680 up to oakland road. we

typically see a little slowing. and it's actually kind of easing off right now and getting ready for that next burst in about 45 minutes. the unusual slowing was right here just by sjc. the airport. so north 101 just past 87 showed some unusual slowing. but it is clearing up now so that's good. watching the rest of the bay. no real unusual patterns throughout this portion of alameda county. contra costa county across the bay bridge is standard pattern there, but more slowing across the bridge from richmond to san rafael, there's a disabled vehicle, and they're still trying to figure out to how fix that tire or get it out of the roadway. and i'm trying to figure out the lane status there. slowing back to you. all right. thanks, mike. well, breaking news for you this morning out in berkeley, firefighters there at the scene of a large structure fire. now, here is how it looks now, this is near the waterfront on seventh and hines, just west of san pablo avenue. now, this is the video i want to show you. or you can see those flames shooting from the roof of that building. yeah, these are the images from about three hours ago. it's still not clear how

many of those businesses are impacted or whether anyone was inside the structure before the fire started. our bob redell is there. he's going to have a live report for us coming up in the next half hour. also, new overnight all lanes are now back open after a crash involving a jackknifed semi truck happened just before 230. this morning. the southbound lanes of 238 in castro valley. the chp says the driver in the blue car crashed, then ran from the scene. a passing semi lost control trying to avoid the abandoned vehicle. the semi jackknifed across all lanes of southbound 238. traffic was diverted to westbound 580, but again all lanes are back open. 604 right now, as if making it in the bay wasn't already hard enough for most renters, it turns out some san francisco landlords are using ai software to set their rents even higher. that is, until now. today in the bay's kris sanchez joins us now to explain more city leaders really putting their foot down once they

figured this all out. well, laura, as you well know, a lot of times you see measures go back and forth, back and forth before they get a final vote. but san francisco supervisors took very swift action, banning some ai rental software the first time they discussed it. the software in question is realpage and yardi. they compile landlord data to determine how high landlords can set a units rent. or perhaps if it's best to not rent it at all according to the information that the supervisors considered the use of this software. increased rent vacancy and even eviction rates, and the companies have faced lawsuits in other communities across the country that are related. now, realpage claims that not enough landlords in san francisco use this software to contribute to that alleged collusion. supervisor aaron peskin disagrees, stating at the board meeting, quote, banning algorithmic price gouging is pro housing policy. let's build housing for renters, not for real estate investors to put

this in perspective, big picture earlier this year, year two large companies that operate multifamily residential properties settled claims that they artificially inflated rental prices using realpage software. this happened in the u.s. district court in tennessee and the u.s. department of justice and the federal trade commission also filed briefs related to what could be a class action lawsuit against the other company, yardi. so san francisco might be the first one to ban it, but may not be the last. marcus. all right. thanks, chris. well, new at six, a staple in the east bay reportedly set to close the chronicle. among the news outlets reporting the annabelle candy company will shut its doors in september. this is after 74 years in business. now, the paper says that the closure means 43 employees will lose their jobs. in a filing with the state employment department, a development department that is annabelle's parent company cites a lack of financial

sustainability for that closure. the candy company is probably best known for its rocky road and big hulk candy bars. the facility on industrial boulevard is set to close on september 27th. i loved me a look or a rocky road back in the day all right, but now? nope. we're all training to be athletes, right? you get so inspired watching these games. team usa at the 2024 olympics, celebrating a massive gold medal victory. call them the golden girls. the women's gymnastics team easily securing victory at the finals in paris. simone biles, now the most decorated u.s. olympic gymnast of all time. yeah, and today, in the bay's jessica aguirre, joining us live from paris this morning. and jess. well, let's get that. just i mean, we'll get to that in just a moment, of course, but i want to talk about the key olympic venue. they're no longer holding pattern. they're the sin river. oh, no. the french officials are so happy. it's taken more than a

billion dollars and a lot of water testing. but as they add hope, the san river open for business today. it actually had swimmers. both the men's and the women's triathlon event got away, got off this morning. so it was diving into the scent for the women first early this morning. they went first taking off early today without a hitch, followed by the men's which had been postponed tuesday because of those unsafe levels of bacteria in the sand. tests showed today, though, that the water was good to go. so great britain's alex yee winning a gold medal for the men and quesada street bogran bringing home gold for france. no testing of the water necessary at la defense arena, where today, defending her dominance day for katie ledecky, stanford grad an olympic medal record holder, will swim. what is her specialty? the 1500 meter freestyle. now get this wrap your head around this last time she lost this race, she was in junior high. yes junior high. and if she gets any medal in

this event, she would tie the record for the most medals won by an american woman in olympic history. okay, also hitting the water. cal swimmer jack alexy in the men's 100 meter freestyle final. and cal alum and olympic medalist ryan murphy in the men's 200 meter backstroke preliminary race. all right, let's talk basketball. we're team usa with steph kd and lebron are going to take on south sudan. the u.s. has won four straight gold medals. it wants a fifth. but it needs to win this game to advance to the knockout rounds here in paris. south sudan could prove problematic. turns out team usa lost to them in an exhibition game in london. so steph, please get those three pointers on the board and yes you saw the magic a gold medal ceremony for team usa, simone biles and the entire team with a dominant performance to win gold in the team. artistic all-around final. the

u.s. had the highest score on every single apparatus they won by more than five points, beating italy and brazil, who take home silver and bronze. you know, the women really proving that teamwork and that sisterhood that you see when they're out on the mat, the way they hug each other, the way they cheer each other on, is the key to this so-called redemption tour that they're on. team usa's jade carey competed in the vault during the finals. her paris olympic career really came down to seconds. here's what she said about her mindset before she took the spotlight. i was just telling myself to be my normal self, that i am every day in the gym, that i've done so much work and that i knew how to do it and it would all be over in 10s. so i was really like a lot of pressure on that one vault. but i knew that if i was just my normal self, that it would get the job done for what the team needed to get the job done, she did. can i just remind you that she is 24 years old? she's still

federal open markets committee will consider lowering rates at its next meeting. big loss for amazon, but maybe a win for consumers. the us product safety commission says amazon is responsible for faulty products that are sold on its platform and has to coordinate recalls, issue refunds where necessary. let's say a faulty hair dryer for instance. amazon said in many cases, it was just connecting sellers with buyers. it wasn't the responsible party, but the government disagreed. the biden administration will send emails to some student loan borrowers today notifying them they're eligible for relief. now, if you object to this relief, there will be a way for you to opt out so you can keep paying if you do nothing, the department of education will assume you're opting in not all

student loan holders are eligible this time around. the senate has passed two bills the kids online safety act and the children's and teens online privacy protection act. they instruct social networks and apps to take, quote, reasonable steps to prevent bullying and other harms. it's the biggest move forward in online kids protection since coppa way back in 1998. you may recall the us surgeon general last year declared social networks a danger to children's mental health, not everyone. marcus is on the side of this new kid's online safety act. main concern basically simplified is it can be vague about what's harmful. and the fear is companies like facebook who don't want to break the law right, will kind of overstep. they'll over censor because make sure they don't violate the law. maybe, for instance, information about lgbtq kids that might help them or or certain political views.

there are objections coming from both the left and the right. so this may not pass the house, but it did pass the senate. that is going to be kind of interesting that in between, yes. all right. thanks, scott. you bet. well, here's some good news. new at six this morning, a life saving push in san francisco to rescue pets who become trapped in fires. firefighters are getting a fresh stock of specialized pet oxygen masks. the spca is providing about 100 new masks to replace supplies, the department says. we're running low. the mask costs about $100 each, but they can be used on dogs, cats, even rabbits who suffer smoke inhalation. the sf spca received $100,000 in donations to cover the cost, so hopefully they don't have to use them. but if they need them, they have them. there they go. all right, well, turning for you this morning, we will find out who will be showing off their moves in a new warriors dance. team. hey, i was

have no skills whatsoever. well, speak for yourself. hold on. let's get a live look out there in walnut creek as you're waking up and heading out. it is a little bit more cloudy this morning. and one other thing i'm watching here is our air quality. we're starting to see a bit more smoke coming in. there are some fires burning a little bit closer to the bay area, so that's going to make our air quality moderate. and if you are sensitive to the wildfire smoke, definitely limit your time outside today. we're right now seeing temperatures in the low 60s and our marine layer coming in. that's the low clouds and the fog that we're seeing over san francisco spreading across the bay area. and keeping those temperatures down, at least for some of us, where it clears out a lot more quickly. today, you're going to feel that our afternoon is a little bit hotter than it has been. and that will be the trend over the next few days. so as you take a look at your microclimate in the forecast at the bottom of the screen, take a look at the range

in the highs that we'll see today. the coastal areas in the 60s, 70s for the peninsula and parts of the inner bay. low 80s moving into parts of the east bay into the tri-valley. and low 90s as you head up toward the delta, as well as into the inland east bay, we're going to see more of the range and temperatures like this continue with more 90s and even triple digits starting to pop up by the end of the week, so we will have some hotter weather at least for the valleys as we get a surge of some humidity coming in by the end of the week, we'll feel a little bit more of the mugginess in the air for friday into saturday, but we'll also be watching out for the possibility of some thunderstorms popping up over the sierra. the bay area will just see a few more clouds for the weekend, but look at those highs. it is going to be hot, extending at least through the middle of next week with some low to mid 90s in the inland areas and then san francisco still providing that cool place to cool off heading into a no sky july into august

a large structure fire that started overnight. we're live on the scene with new details on the damage done. san francisco starts its aggressive sweeps on encampments as part of mayor

breed's promised crackdown. the reason advocates argue, that the city is not holding up its end of the bargain. plus, we'll take you back out to paris bay area olympians set to compete today from the legendary katie ledecky in the pool to steph curry taking the court. we've got everything you need to know as excitement grows for team usa. this is today in the bay a very good wednesday morning to you 630 right now. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia and i'm marcus washington. let's get right to that breaking news this morning. that massive fire tearing through a building in berkeley overnight today in the bay's bob redell has been live at the scene overnight. how's it looking now, bob? good morning. jim, marcus and laura, the fire has been contained for quite some time, but you see behind me, berkeley fire department still dumping a lot of water onto this fire because you can see the smoke. and we've occasionally seen flames are still a lot of heat in there.

and they just don't want this to flare back up. we are in a warehouse district and you're looking at it's hard to tell, but those are two attached warehouses and this is the district that houses tech and research that's on the back side of aquatic park in berkeley that runs along the east shore highway. now, firefighters pulled out of the building shortly after their arrival, a little bit after three before three this morning. they went on to defensive almost from the get go, and you can see why in this video. this was a very large fire that quickly consumed this building. the roof collapsed. whatever was inside is gone. there is a for lease sign out front, so it's not clear if either of these warehouses were occupied with a business inside. there's also a third attached warehouse in the back that you can't see from our vantage point, but that was saved by a firewall. now, we believe that that house is a used furniture outlet. again, the fire department was able to save that

business. the fire department here in berkeley is investigating two possible causes. one, there might have been a homeless encampment on the back side where someone might have started a vegetation fire that spread into the building. also, looking at the possibility of an electrical fire, as there was a power line down during this fire fight. well, power line did drop and that was one of the hazards in the beginning. our crews had to navigate their way around that power line. we quickly taped it off that power line also started the van that it fell onto on fire. so we had that as an additional distraction. the berkeley fire did call out pg&e, which did de-energize that power line as a result, there was about 60 customers without power in this part of berkeley, again mostly businesses. if not all. no injuries. they did briefly. the fire department go to a third alarm for backup, but they

went back down to a two alarm. once they decided to go on the defensive. so again, you've got two attached warehouses behind me that are destroyed. not clear if those businesses inside there is a third business in the back that was saved by a firewall reporting live here in berkeley. bob redell today in the bay. all right, bob, thank you. new tensions this morning in san francisco as the city tries to address its homeless crisis, with leaders pushing to clear more large encampments. advocates accuse the city of dropping the ball when it comes to providing alternatives. today in the bay's ginger conejero saab joins us live in san francisco this morning. so what's the response that we're hearing from the mayor's office here? reporter well, good morning, laura. the mayor's office is saying it's continuing its current practices of clearing large encampments in the city, and we're already seeing that play out yesterday, an encampment was cleared just under the central freeway by the south van ness area in the city.

now, here's mayor london breed. this was about two weeks ago at a mayoral debate with the fire union. this is when she referenced a timeline in august. for more aggressive action. it hasn't been easy. in fact, thank goodness for the change in the supreme court decision. effective august, we are going to be very aggressive and assertive in moving encampments, which may even include criminal penalties. and days ago, governor gavin newsom ordered state agencies to remove homeless camps throughout california. this was seen as a show of force since the supreme court's grants pass decision, which gave states, local and local agencies, i should say, more power to clear encampments now, as i just mentioned, a large encampment under the city's central freeway around south venice was cleared yesterday. at the same time, a coalition of homeless advocates demanded for supportive housing before any more encampments are cleared. here's john doerr, who

is with the legal team that filed the federal lawsuit and triggered an injunction that had barred the city from clearing encampments. demand our elected officials fill those empty units, bring more housing on the market, increase rental subsidies and assistance and eviction protections. now, according to city data, there are 793 permanent supportive housing units open, 398. just under 400 of those are offline and they are in need of repairs. now, another 229 are currently in the process of being occupied, and that all leaves only 166 available for use. now the city says it will continue to offer shelter and other services to the unhoused, as it continues its clearing operations in san francisco, ginger conejero saab today in the bay. all right. thank you very much. ginger. new at six. convicted killer scott peterson will break his 20 year silence

in a new documentary. thanks for talking with me today. face to face with scott peterson drops next month on nbc owned peacock. peterson is now fighting for a new trial. this is to clear his life sentence for murdering his wife, laci and their unborn son. the three part series will also include interviews with former modesto police members and his former defense attorney. developing this morning a new wildfire triggering evacuation orders in two counties west of yosemite. the pedro fire started yesterday afternoon near lake don pedro. as this morning the fire has burned more than 2700 acres in mariposa and tuolumne counties. no reports of homes destroyed and right now, firefighters say it is about 5% contained. in the meantime, firefighters taking more, making more progress rather on the massive park fire, which started

outside of chico, a week ago. now it is close to 18%, contained. 389,000 acres have burned in four different counties, making this california's fifth largest fire ever. nearly 300 structures have been destroyed. one man is facing arson charges in connection with the fire. 637 as we take a live look outside in san jose this morning and that heat expected to return, meteorologist kari hall taking a closer look at what is driving this change. well, as we take a look at our forecast, we are bracing for another warm up as high pressure moves from the southwest into the bay area a little bit closer. high pressure basically is what it says. it's producing a high amount of pressure on the earth. that means the air is sinking down and as we see high pressure moving in, it causes our temperatures to go up, mainly because all of the sinking air, as it sinks, it warms up, it

compresses those air molecules which move faster and create more friction and also more heat. as it does so and pushes down on the earth. so when we take a look at a spot like morgan hill, our temperatures are going to be heating back up. we see that high pressure also keeping our wind direction flowing offshore. and we don't get that nice air conditioning, our natural air conditioning coming in off of the ocean. so we are going to see our temperatures headed for the 90s. going into the weekend. we'll talk about all of our microclimates and take a look at the rest of the forecast coming up. for now, let's head over to mike with a look at the morning commute. yeah, things were a little tougher actually. the last half hour has been pretty good. and that kind of seems to be the pattern for the summertime. but we're looking at northbound 101 through san jose, easy flow of traffic. just the first little start of that second build. and this one will stick around for the morning commute southbound. there was a crash around oakland road. looks like no problems. there may be another one up in mountain view.

we'll check on the latest from chp. a smooth drive getting to the peninsula through the peninsula and actually coming over down southbound 880 through hayward into union city is the only little bit of slowing we see for the east bay. as far as the nimitz goes, as we look toward the east shore freeway a little built through berkeley, and the biggest slowdown is through richmond, heading across the bridge. typical patterns for the morning now getting into the city. there may be some issues this evening and getting out of the city as well. the second of two night's giants versus a's over in the east bay. and then scott, you can't use the tunnel. the posey tube going from alameda to oakland. but locals like, you know, those bridges to the south. over to you. all right. fair enough. well, coming up on today in the bay, we have new polling numbers that show that show. well, they're going to show more than that, i guarantee you, laura. oh, and also artificial intelligence imported from silicon valley to paris, the way it's being used at the olympic games and a historic first for the women's rugby team. but the great news just keeps it coming. the second win the team just scored after taking bronze in paris. keep it

better idea of what's going on. and you can see on your screen from bloomberg looking at all the battleground states. a dead heat harris 48% of the vote. trump 47. that's a tie because the margin of error is 1%. as well. vice president harris yesterday in atlanta, former president trump reacted to this video on his truth social, claiming harris fans then started leaving five minutes after she started speaking. harris for her part, double dog dare trump to show up to the next presidential debate. well donald. i do hope you'll reconsider to meet me on the debate stage. because as the

additional 7 million pounds of meat covering about 70 products made over six weeks starting may 10th. now that original recall involved about 200,000 pounds of meat over a much shorter time frame. the company says. this wider recall is now done out of abundance of caution, tainted meat is believed to be responsible for dozens of illnesses and two deaths. the cases were reported in 13 states, none here in california. 647 right now, turning back to the paris olympics, we have a live look at the olympic cauldron burning in the tuileries garden. the world's best athletes are only the only performers at the olympics. artificial intelligence, you may have noticed also is on performance imported to paris from silicon valley. among the companies working with ai during the games is intel, the santa clara company tells us. ai is being used to help coaches train and track athletes, but it also creates a massive database for

donation from the american businesswoman michelle kong as she agreed that maher and the rest of the team is really bringing new attention to the sport. ahead of the l.a. games in 2028. wow, it's really, really cool and it's inspiring to for young athletes to see them. you know, they've got these role models to look up to. yeah, never give up to the very end. consider that a preview i think for the la games. then there we go. we'll be watching and we are watching that forecast too because things are heating up just a bit. just a little bit today. and we'll feel that in the valleys, not so much in san francisco as well as the coastline, but we're also going to see much more of a hazy sky and some drifts of smoke coming in. we will be under an air quality advisory for today, moderate air quality. and if you are sensitive to that, you might want to stay in the air conditioning or around some air filtration. we are going to see those temperatures warming up. so as we make it farther into the east bay, as well as the south county, there will be some low 90s for this afternoon and

still in the 60s and 70s for the coast and peninsula tomorrow. it's about the same. but notice how these temperatures, like in fairfield, reach 9597 in vacaville and clearlake will hit a high of 100 degrees. so the valleys really starting to feel that heat by the end of the wee, but not so bad in spots like san jose, where we're going to reach a high of 82 through the end of the week. but there will be some valley temperatures like napa reaching 90 and 90 in los gatos as well. we're also going to add in some humidity in time for the weekend. a surge of some tropical moisture. those areas in green starting to move closer to the bay area, but really just off to our south and east over the sierra. that could mean some weekend showers and thunderstorms, possibly some lightning. and of course the with the severity of how dry the vegetation is, any lightning will be of high concern. so we'll be watching out for that. meanwhile, here in the bay area we'll just see a few more clouds, feel some higher humidity and our temperature is headed for the low to mid 90s.

welcome back. we're moving you forward with a look at the top stories on today in the bay. and we begin with that breaking news out of berkeley where firefighters are at the scene of that large structure fire. now here is a live look at that firefight that continues. this is near the waterfront on seventh and hines just west of san pablo avenue. now, it's still not clear how many businesses are impacted here or whether anyone was inside that

structure before the fire started in san francisco. the divisive issue of homeless encampments reaching a fever pitch. mayor london breed has announced a new policy of aggressively removing the encampments, even as homeless advocates are calling for more supportive housing before any more encampments come down. a large encampment under the central freeway was cleared yesterday, also in san francisco city. landlords are using ai software to set rents even higher. in response, supervisors are now banning some versions of the technology. realpage and yardi compiled landlord data to determine how high they can actually set their rent for a housing unit. u.s. department of justice and federal trade commission have filed briefs in possible class action lawsuits against one of those companies, and competition is resuming in paris as team usa dominating in the 2024 olympics. today, in the bay's jessica aguirre joins us live from paris and jessica, one
