olympic action, the u.s. maintains its lead in the medal count with 30 in total. france and china round out the top three. jay gray will be live from paris later on "early today," with a preview of the day's events. let's turn now to the political competition heating up in the united states. vice president kamala harris has scored the endorsement of the united auto workers union. the support was expected as the union president has been an outspoken critic of donald trump. drew petramoix joins us from d.c. the harris campaign hasn't had much time to celebrate that endorsement, because they've been focussed on responding to controversial comments from former president trump. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, frances. the former president is facing a lot of backlash over false claims he made during an interview. trump had a very combative conversation at the convention for the national association of black journalists, where he falsely questioned the vice

president's racial identity. >> she was always of indian heritage. and she was only promoting indian heritage. i didn't know she was black. until a number of years ago when she happened to turn black. and now she wants to be known as black. so i don't know. is she indian? or is she black? >> she has always identified as a black woman. >> i respect either one, but she obviously doesn't, because she was indian all the way. then all of a sudden she made a turn, and she went, she became a black person. >> reporter: the harris campaign quickly responded accusing the former president of dividing the country. vice president harris spoke overnight at an event for historically black sorority in houston, where she shared this response to trump's comments. >> the american people deserve a leader who tells the truth. a leader who does not respond with hostility and anger when confronted with the facts. we deserve a leader who

understands that our differences do not divide us. >> reporter: overnight, donald trump held a rally in pennsylvania, returning to the state for the first time since surviving an assassination attempt there. today the former president is expected to give a victim interview to the fbi about the shooting, while his running mate, senator jd vance has plans to tour the southern border. the accused mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks has reached a plea agreement with the u.s. military court. khalid sheikh mohamed, also known by his initials, ksm, and two of his alleged accomplices will plead guilty to a lesser charge in an attempt to avoid the death penalty. for the latest, let's bring in matt bodner. what more do we know about the deal? >> reporter: good morning, frances. there are a number of things we still don't know about this deal, such as the exact charges these three men are expected to plead guilty to. but the deal will allow them to

potentially avoid the death penalty while also allowing a nearly two-decade legal proceeding to come to a close. all three of these men have been in custody since the early 2000s. khalid sheikh mohamed was captured in pakistan in 2003 and has been held at guantanamo bill since 2006. ksh ksm and his two accomplices were arraigned in 2008. the charges were no less than war crimes and murder among other serious charges. for the past 15 years, there hasn't been much movement on their case. lawyers representing them have slammed the process as a farce. they've gone so far at times to claim that the government was slow-walking the trial in the hopes of avoiding details from coming to light about their time in cia captivity, between 2003 and 2006, when they arrived at guantanamo bay. and the concern is particularly with regards to their treatment

while in cia custody. the next step now that a plea agreement has been reached. it is expected to come next week at a hearing scheduled when the three defendants are expected to plead guilty to these unspecified, lesser charges. back to you, frances. >> iran is vowing revenge after hamas' political leader was assassinated in a missile strike in tehran. while israel has not confirmed nor denied any role in the killing of ismail haniyeh, ayatollah khamenei has ordered a direct attack on israel in retaliation, according to the "new york times." raf sanchez has the latest. >> reporter: cries for revenge against israel echoing across the middle east, after the nati political chief noticin the hea the iranian capital, killed in a missile strike hours after meeting the supreme leader.

taco bell is bringing a.i. to the drive through, but first an attorney general is suing stub hub, accusing the company of inflating ticket prices for customers. arabile gumede is here with those details. good morning, arabile. >> good morning, frances. look, this is a big story, really, for stub hub who have come out and said that they're disappointed that they have gone through with this, they believe it is within the law. they used drip pricing. they are a ticket reseller. they've apparently sold, since engaging in this activity, it sold 4.9 million tickets, then, and elicited $118 million in hidden fees, just in washington, d.c. alone since 2015. so this is a massive claim then
