very good afternoon extending well into this morning. those three freed americans within the last few hours arriving in texas where they checked into a medical center to care for the physical needs of those detained. journalist evan gershkovich seen joking with his family as they waited to move on. overnight an emotional return home. all released as part of a historic international prisoner exchange involving 7 countries. president biden and vice president harris joining family members to welcome them back to the u.s. >> how did you process this moment? >> satisfaction, a feeling of relief for their families. >> reporter: among those now home, wall street journal reporter evan gershkovich, arrested while on assignment. just last month, he had been sentenced to 16 years for spying charges in what both the u.s. and the journal called a sham trial. nbc philadelphia speaking with
7:06 am
gershkovich after he landed. >> how are you feeling? >> i'm all right. it was a good flight. >> reporter: journalist also freed, touching down in time to celebrate her daughter's 13th birthday. the third marine veteran paul whelan speaking after arriving in texas this morning. >> thank you for all your prayers, your good wishes. >> reporter: he was arrested in 2018 while attending a wedding. the u.s. government that long rejected those charges have been working for years to secure his release. but whelan was excluded from two previous swaps. brittney griner, who is currently representing the u.s. basketball team in paris calling it a great day. the president earlier with family members at the white

house, touting the complex diplomatic efforts that involved months of negotiations. >> today is a powerful example of why it is vital to have friends in this world. >> reporter: national security adviser jake sullivan becoming emotional as he discussed conversations with the family yesterday. >> today -- excuse me. today was a very good day. >> reporter:? exchange for the american prisoners, eight russians convicted of a change of cyber, financial and violent crimes returned to moscow thursday, receiving a hero's welcome from president putin. for the freed americans, a long-awaited homecoming, officials say. the culmination of nearly two years of effort by the biden administration. the president spearheading this deal, just an hour before he announced he was dropping out of the presidential race and olaf schultz responding, for you, i
7:08 am
will do this. >> peter alexander, thank you. obviously the release and homecoming was emotional for all involved. it followed months of complex negotiations, secret meetings as well. jake sullivan, who was one of the many architects of this deal. you were there. we saw you get emotional. you were there. tell us about these moments where these prisoners returned home, what you witnessed and how they're doing this morning. >> well, thank you for having me, savannah. last night was remarkable night. they saw the president, vice president and they saw their family. you could see evan lifting his mom off the ground. the relief, the joy of finally being on american soil, you can feel it as well as see it standing there. and, of course, then there are the kids. 13-year-old miriam who should be going to a taylor swift concert tonight, well, she's doing
7:09 am
something better, but i hope she gets to that concert. >> this is a result of months of work. a multitude of countries. but it came together, as i understand it, in the last couple of weeks, so what made that final bit of difference? >> well, savannah, we had to put pieces into place one by one. we were asking countries like poland and norway and slovenia and russia to provide prisoners in exchange. the president one by one worked through those, got the agreements. and finally on july 21st, he spoke with the slovenian prime minister. that was the final piece falling into place. we had a sense this deal would happen, but we couldn't be sure until it happened on the tarmac in turkey yesterday. >> vladimir putin even seems
7:10 am
quite pleased with this deal. he's getting back an assassination, spies, hackers. we're getting americans who were held on sham charges. this also is the question. we want our americans home so badly, of course, but doesn't putin have a continued incentive to do this? is there any consequence you can enact now that would change this business model for him? >> well, first i would point out that us getting out journalists and freedom fighters and former marines, that shows you what the united states of america values. the people russia wanted back, hackers and criminals and thugs, that shows you what vladimir putin values. secondly, these are very tough decisions. and the president has to weigh that. but the president has to ask this question, am i going to let these people rot in jail? and the answer is no. we started this administration with a lot more unjustly detained americans than are currently being held overseas today even though we have done a number of these deals.
7:11 am
we believe we are doing the right thing, but it doesn't mean it is not a very hard call. >> let me ask you about these hard calls because there are a couple of americans in russian prisons. one is a schoolteacher. his family say they're heart broken. they have been met with stone walling, double standards and today abandoning mark to die in prison. mark fogel is being held on the same charge as brittney griner and for longer. how do you decide who is in and who's out? and does it come down to who you know and whether you are politically connected? >> paul whelan, a former marine, is not powerful or politically ?
7:12 am
>> my point is connected. >> and mark fogel? >> but my point is that that is not a responsible statement about the -- what the biden administration is doing every day to get more than 70 americans out of prison or out of hostage-taking situations around the world. i have personally worked on the mark fogel case. i am still working on that case. i am determined to get him home, and i will do everything in my power to see to it that he's freed. but paul whelan, we weren't able to get him in a couple previous deals. we got him in this one. i look forward to the day i call mark fogel's family and tell them he's coming home. >> it was a late night, so thanks for getting up. appreciate it. >> thanks a lot. all right, guys. let's turn to the 2024 race. donald trump facing pushback from members of his own party in the wake of controversial comments about vice president
7:13 am
harris' personal identity, but the former president, he's not backing down. nbc's garrett haake's in d.c. with that story. garrett, good morning. >> yeah. those comments about kamala harris' race continue to echo across the political landscape with neither candidate out on the campaign trail. this morning donald trump's false claims about kamala harris' racial identity casting a cloud over his campaign as fellow republicans urge him to change the subject. >> she's also embraced her heritage proudly, as she should. my problem with vice president harris is the policy choices she's made. >> look, this election should be about the issues. >> reporter: the controversy over harris' heritage stemming from these remarks about the vice president. the daughter of jamaican and indian immigrants on wednesday. >> she was always of indian heritage, and she was only
7:14 am
promoting indian heritage. i didn't know she was black until a number of years ago which she happened to turn black. now she wants to know black. >> reporter: the former president pressing this claim in a social meeting most thursday writing, thank you, kamala. and noting her indian heritage. trump's running mate, jd vance looked to explain it in less divisive language on a visit to the southern border. >> trump's point is that she is a chameleon. >> reporter: trump calling the republican ticket weird. >> he and his running mate sure seem to have a lot to say about me. and by the way, don't you find some of their stuff to be plain weird. >> reporter: trump speaking out in a radio interview. >> well, they're the weird things. i'm a lot of things, but weird i'm not.
7:15 am
>> reporter: they have raised $300 million in the month of july. it's what the harris campaign is calling a grass roots fund-raising record. harris is pulling her running mate from this pool of six final lists. that will come no later than tuesday when the democratic ticket is set to come together in philadelphia. >> garrett haake for us in washington, d.c. garrett, thank you. okay. can we just talk about the olympics? any good stories? craig's got it. >> bonjour to you as well. guys, team usa celebrating one of its best days yet so far here in paris with simone biles' golden comeback. swimming star katie ledecky adding to her own olympic legacy. and a historic win from our fencer. simply put, team usa, especially
