for help identifying the person they say broke into their business. the items the thieves were able to get away with. also, narrowing down her choices for running mate vice president kamala harris, close to making an announcement on former president donald trump is ramping up his attacks on the campaign trail. plus, going for gold today, a number of bay area athletes will be competing. jessica aguirre sitting down with katie ledecky following her historic win. this is today in the bay. good morning to you. on this monday i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. let's start out with a look at the forecast for this monday morning. meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect. good morning. good morning. it's going to be a little bit warmer today, but we are going to start on a warming trend over the next few days. and we're also seeing our morning clouds and high humidity to start out. now we're taking a look at our
5:02 am
temperatures that will for the valleys, make it into the 90s and even up to 100 degrees. breezy for the hills with an elevated fire danger, especially as we go into the day tomorrow and temperatures will crank up in the valleys. but we will have some cooling coming our way late week. and this morning we're starting out with upper 50s and low 60s. as you head out the door, we're headed for 77 in hayward, 81 in san jose and upper 80s for napa and santa rosa. and we'll take a look ahead to the rest of the week coming up in just a few minutes. thank you very much, kari. well criminals target a small coffee shop trying to make it in the bay, and now they're asking for your help to identify the person who broke in today in the bay's bob redell. joining us live from the newsroom this morning. and, bob, i understand there's surveillance video showing what happened there. there is. correct. good morning to marcus and laura. we spoke with the owner of keiko's coffee. this is near saint mary's park in sf, who's asking to take a look at this surveillance camera video from inside her business to see if anyone recognizes the person
5:03 am
who broke in through the door, stole her cash register. it happened yesterday morning just before 6 a.m. dacey leon tells us her phone alerted her to a burglar alarm at her business. but by the time she arrived, the bad guy was already gone. now she's reported this to police. says this kind of crime is one of the many things that make it challenging to operate a small business in the city. it's upsetting because, you know, it's something you're building and you're trying to do something, you know, working out your way up. and then for them to come in and just take it like that, it's upsetting. you know, we work for this and you know, it's not about the money, but it's the principle. you know, that's what upsets me the most. and this is cell phone video from just before seven saturday night where thieves smashed cases at the k jewelry store at stonestown galleria, also in sf.
5:04 am
they grabbed the jewelry, ran off, apparently in and out. within a matter of minutes. we spoke with a witness off camera who says the loud banging noise caught their attention. they saw what appear to be four people using hammers or tools. no arrests yet. k jewelry was closed yesterday. we did reach out to brookfield properties retail, which runs the mall and k jewelers, for comment, but have not yet heard back. bob redell today in the bay to see. thank you bob. well, turning now to decision 2024, kamala harris is expected to announce her running mate as soon as tomorrow. the vp reportedly held in-person meetings yesterday at her residence in washington with three of her top contenders. arizona senator mark kelly, minnesota governor tim walz and pennsylvania governor josh shapiro. she was also scheduled to meet with governors andy beshear of kentucky, j.b. pritzker of illinois, as well as transportation secretary pete buttigieg. well former president donald trump says he is agreeing
5:05 am
to debate vice president kamala harris on fox news on september fourth in pennsylvania. trump says he canceled a previously scheduled debate on abc with president joe biden on september 10th, in part because biden is no longer a participant and because he's suing abc and anchor george stephanopoulos. but it's unclear if harris will attend the fox debate. her communications director says trump needs to commit to the debate at abc on december 10th, harris posted on social media that she will be at the abc debate and hopes to see him there. well team usa is looking to dominate again today in pari. this is after scoring key wins over the weekend. want to give you a live look at the eiffel tower? there in paris, france this morning? that's where those athletes from team usa collecting some serious hardware. that's right. and now stanford alum who competed in tokyo is hoping for a repeat in paris. today in the bay jessica aguirre is in the city of light with a look at who's looking to
5:06 am
score big. yes. boy, are they lots of people looking to score big. okay, we are in the second week of the olympics and the competition. much of it has now moved to le stade, where we have track and field. and yes, siberia. olympian is looking to add a little hardware to her collection and she's hoping to do it here in paris. stanford's valarie allman, competing in the women's discus throw final in just a few hours. the cardinal, the seven time all american at school now, she already won gold in tokyo. almond says watching the movie miracle about the 1980 team usa hockey team inspired her to represent team usa. we have no doubt that there's another medal for sure on the way for her. and in case you blinked and missed it over the weekend, yes, katie ledecky won another gold medal in the pool. she's a fish. ledecky making history again on saturday. she won her ninth career gold medal and her second at these games in
5:07 am
the 800 meter freestyle event. she's now won four golds in the same race, four times at the olympics, ledecky tells today she simply takes one race at a time. i'm going to take it year by year. i'm not. you know, i got to see where i'm at each year. but it would be a dream to compete in front of a home home crowd. ledecky, with nine gold medals, the most by any american woman in olympic history. and her golden run may not be over. ledecky telling mike tirico over the weekend that 2028 is not out of the question for her now. i'm going to be with her in just a little bit. i'll ask you the same question again. so we'll see what happens with that one in the water today. team usa's men's water polo with several stanford alums. the men are going to play croatia. they have already secured their spot in the quarter finals. and it may be all that love that they're getting from flavor flav. he is now also sponsoring the men's water polo team after saying he would sponsor the women. flavor flav showing up here
5:08 am
consistently to cheer on both teams. all we do is win win. cheerleader in chief and team hype man flav committed to making sure both the teams have the backing that they need. public enemy turned water polo aficionado the rock and roll hall of famer is now best friend to danville's maggie steffens and her water polo teammates, recruiting stars like spike lee and bay area celebrity chef guy fieri. poolside to see what the three time gold medalist are made of. that's how you win, and that's how you take care of one another. and it was it was so inspiring. i mean, we've been to a lot of events, so far this week, but that right there was probably the best representations of what the olympics means to me. fieri now sold on what he calls rugby in the water, boosting the women after their win over france. now also happening today, the goat simone biles, is back at it again. she's going to do her floor exercise and she's also doing the beam. how do you think that's going to go? your guess?
5:09 am
yes, another gold for sure. we're hoping so. thanks, jess. hey, you can watch the women's beam and floor gymnastics finals tonight in prime time on nbc bay area. you can actually catch team usa track and field athletes going head to head. that's going to include the 800 meter race where medals are on the line. all of that action kicking off at 8:00 tonight right here on nbc bay area. and you can find it at nbcbayarea.com. and meteorologist kari hall of course, tracking how that weather is shaping up in paris as we enter the final week of competition. good monday morning. we're excited to see what today's games will bring. and in paris, we'll see temperatures up to 86 degrees with sunshine. the temperatures coming up a few degrees, and tomorrow the word of the day will be show are hot. we'll see those temperatures in the upper 80s during the afternoon and then coming down to the low 80s as we go throughout the week. and those are the numbers we'll see over the next several days,
5:10 am
with overnight lows in the upper 50s to lower 60s, but overall looks great as we go throughout the week. and we'll see what excitements the olympians bring. now let's head over to mike with an update on gas prices. all right folks, you know what? we're going to look at the gas prices. they're actually coming down a little bit. but they've held over the weekend. we have a little smooth flow of traffic though for those who are using the gas prices up in the north bay, where there are some bargains there in vallejo, always watch vallejo's corridor there. over here we're watching. 242 and just over the last 30s these speed sensors went back to green. they were slow for a few. there was a crash southbound on 242. that is your commute direction, but earlier than your commute hits coming out of contra costa county and heading down toward the walnut creek interchange. alameda county looking great. just that mild build out of the altamont pass. pretty standard there. even though the sensors are green down here in san jose, i do want to show there's a pretty good volume of traffic. and, you know, as we come toward the end of the summer months, start the school year up again. yes. sorry, kids. well, they're not
5:11 am
up right now. the school starting up the next week for some school districts. and so we will see a shift in those traffic flows back to you. all right. thank you very much, mike. well, dodging the blame ahead here on today in the bay the recent crowdstrike says it should not face the blame for delta airlines flight disruptions. following that, global tech outage a few weeks ago. the action the airline is now promising to take because of it. global tech outage to global sell off world keeps turning. the sell off is coming to new york. they open in about an hour and a half. plus getting in the olympic spirit. the show of support adele demonstrated at one of her recent concerts. but first, here's a look at the current medal count as we head to break. go team usa we'll be right back

hill. it's a nice cool start. we have our marine layer and those clouds that start out. it's going to clear out around 9:00, and then the rest of the day mostly sunny and slightly warmer temperatures compared to yesterday. tomorrow's the peak of the heat. will take a look at this week's temperatures coming up in a few minutes. are we looking over here toward the san mateo bridge? where there was a good amount of traffic for the last ten minutes? we've kind of sorted out back to your normal volume. but again, those taillights westbound, your commute direction. i'm seeing a few more headlights and tail lights on these cameras this monday, but still a little early. we'll watch the trend.
5:15 am
well good morning, very happy monday to you. although i'm not sure it's going to be happy on wall street. there is a global sell off that started friday after the american jobs report started here, went round the world to the london stock exchange, euronext hong kong, nikkei and back around as the world turns. these are friday's numbers and we expect more of the same at the open here in america. 630 our time again that week, american jobs number combined with lower factory orders have investors worried. let's take a look at the futures. the bet that traders make on the open. you can see the dow going to plunge 1000 points on the open. in the past, a poor showing for jobs might have made investors happy because they know it would put pressure on the fed to lower interest rates. but in this case, we already know the fed is going to lower rates in september. and that's right before the next presidential election, which is awkward. the fed is supposed to be an independent body above politics. it's going to lower rates. but
5:16 am
when it does, that's going to benefit the biden-harris administration. but only coincidentally. it's very awkward because central banks push so hard to be independent that when they all of a sudden look as if they are having effects on election outcomes, that reduces the level to which they can argue that they are independent. now, this crisis on wall street this morning is pushing mortgage rates to recent lows more throughout the day. other news crowdstrike says it shouldn't be blamed for delta airlines flight disruptions. delta says the meltdown cost it a half billion dollars and wants to take legal action against crowdstrike. now, delta's computers did go down, but it took delta much longer to recover. on a happier note, i got to take part in san jose burn foundation. oh that's right, how did chili cookoff? it went well. it was delicious. santa clara heartburn. i'm good, i'm good. ate a lot of crackers. santa clara county fair fairgoers could also sample, you know, the various different
5:17 am
chilies made by the firehouses, teams of nurses from various hospitals took place as well. took part money supports, camps for kids with burns among other things. the team, the winner, team six from station 13 over on pearl avenue in san jose. a tough decision coming down, guy. number six. so maybe sneak over to pearl avenue just north of the library there and knock on the door and see if they have any more chili. did you have a favorite? i did it was that and another fire station. i tell you what, it's one of those where the judges were voting back and forth like, you know. yeah, exactly. horse trading. before we could come up with a with the winner. yeah, maybe a cookbook is coming out. that'd be good. we'll see. right. cool. and i'm glad you survived, too. i did, and i'm a kid. i'm a kid from the midwest. an irishman from the midwest. so the crackers were spicy. i was a little
5:18 am
worried about you. i'm glad to see you're here. all right. thanks, scott. you bet. 517 right now trending this morning, adele showing her support for the paris olympics during one of her shows. yeah, the singer who's performing a string of shows over in munich, literally brought the games on the stage, pausing her performance to show the women's 100 meter final live. the women's olympic 100 meter final. away. first time clayton gets an excellent start. richardson gets left a little bit. it's julian. alfred is out in front and julian alfred's got this to win caribbean island taking it home again. ultimately there saint lucia's julian alfred took home the gold medal for the 100 meter final, finishing that race 10.72 seconds, marking the first olympic gold medal for the country in its history. a team usa sha'carri richardson actually came in second and melissa jefferson coming in third. so u.s. taking home second and third. there i love
5:19 am
it. the world's watching. you see the send off the saint lucia runner got they just showed amazing crowds at the airport and everything like this. just representing again showing how you represent the country. kind of like what we do when you leave every day. well, that's just you're happy that i'm going. it's kind of obvious. i can hear you guys. i'm leaving the office. oh, it's so hard to do stuff over the weekend. it's like, oh, i'm going to miss those races. but good thing for prime time, right? prime time. and then, you know, people like adele is like, we're going to make sure you see it. okay. very cool. all right. hey not so cool this weekend or today week. yeah. still dreaming of the weekend up. not only in the bay area will it be hotter, but we'll also have some hotter temperatures in paris that we'll see during the games. they'll be talking about that. we're starting out with some upper 50s, low 60s for our monday morning. it's 57 in walnut creek and 63 in san jose. eventually those clouds will clear out in santa clara. we'll see our temperatures in the low 60s at 8:00 at noon. we're in the mid
5:20 am
70s and then going to see some low 80s for later today. still really nice. not much of a heat risk for the bay area but we are going to see those temperatures coming up to the low 90s for concord, 81 for san jose, 88 for napa, and 86 for novato, while san francisco will be in the upper 60s. you can see the range and temperatures that we'll have anywhere from upper 60s along the coast to triple digits tomorrow, and we'll start to see more of a moderate to major heat risk with those highs going up quite a bit and heat advisories expected for parts of the south bay and then on wednesday, we're starting to see it already easing up. just a bit, but it will still be very warm as we see the high pressure still in control with some rain across the region, but moving up and around the bay area as we will continue throughout the week with high pressure in control, that will eventually start to allow for some cooler temperatures in the return of the ocean breeze by the end of the week. so here's a look at
5:21 am
what to expect. we are going to hit the triple digits in a lot of spots in the tri valley, the south county, parts of the north bay, and then on wednesday we're in the mid 90s, but then the end of the week is looking nice. a little bit of a spike in temperatures on saturday, but overall we are going to have some cooler weather ahead. and in san francisco, not much of a warm up here except for those low 70s we'll see tomorrow. and mike, you've been watching. the commute seems pretty smooth. it is pretty smooth. then i got a note. something going on for the central freeway, which got my ears and eyes all ready to look for whatever's going on those signals. but it's on the central freeway or just off the central freeway. reports of a roadside fire? no structures reported at danger, but we're going to watch for that. and the updates most likely will just clear from the chp report. since the san francisco fire department is headed over there, over here, folks are headed out of vallejo, over in toward novato. and that is your typical slowdown that just starts right on time. there is a disabled vehicle southbound 680 at marsh view. so we're watching the trend off the cordelia split there and heading
5:22 am
down toward the benicia bridge. but coming over from highway four, no problems in that direction. your commute would start earlier over there in pittsburg bay point. coming out of the 580 and the altamont pass, no major problems there. minimums for the day, for these travel times back to you. all right. thanks, mike. well, next on today in the bay nbc bay area response. he bought a pricey tool kit that the seller delivered to someone else. i'm consumer investigator the bedtie

5:26 am
ostriches got their long necks and long legs. some of the proceeds benefit the san francisco zoo, and there are 13 stories in the entire collection that looks good. i love that. all right, well, you know what? nbc bay area responds to a san francisco man who says his $300 online order never made it to his doorstep. after being locked in limbo with the company for more than a month, he contacted consumer investigator chris moore's team to deliver some results. good morning. joshua says amazon sent him this message right here, saying it delivered the $315 toolkit. he ordered. one problem with this photograph right here, though it shows the package delivered to the wrong san francisco apartment. joshua says he flagged amazon it, told him to go ahead and file a police report. he did, but joshua says amazon kept refusing to issue him a refund or send him a new toolkit so he topped our team. we contacted amazon, it then refunded joshua $315 and told us
5:27 am
this. we were able to issue the customer a refund after receiving and verifying the proper police report. sometimes a police report is critical when deliveries go mia. yeah it's true. cops might not investigate, but some companies require you to file a police report to get your money back. it's just part of the process. if that process doesn't work, let us know. snap the qr code on screen right now to fill out our consumer complaint form online. i'm kris sanchez in san jose at the police headquarters where the flags are flying at half staff because of the death of a community service officer. we'll tell you what we know about the officer and the suspect. you're

suspected drunk driver hits and kills a community service officer in the south bay. and mystery solved. the presidential candidate, now claiming responsibility for a dead bear cub in central park. scott mcgrew breaking down the unusual story ahead, plus packing a punch. hurricane debbie makes landfall in florida, bringing torrential rain, dangerous winds and flash flooding to the area. we are tracking its path and the new technology being used to
5:31 am
track the storm and others like it. this is today in the bay here we go. 530 on your monday morning. hope you're coming off a great weekend. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia and i'm marcus washington. a lot to get to this morning. but first we want to start with a look at that forecast for you. meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect out there. foggy. start there in san francisco. yes. once again, that's going to protect the city from the heat that we're feeling in the inland valleys. and it stays cool here. but we also will see a wide range in our microclimates as we go into late morning, into the afternoon. right now, we're all starting out nice and cool with some upper 50s and low 60s, a little bit warmer in san jose at 63 there with upper 50s in the north bay. and that's where we'll see temperatures ranging from 86 in novato to 98 degrees in ukiah and in fairfield, 95 degrees, while san jose will be in the low 80s. we will be heating up. so we'll talk about that in a few minutes. and, mike, you've got some kind of spill on the freeway. yeah. this
5:32 am
was the incident we saw that popped up. i showed folks coming down toward the benicia bridge off the cordelia junction there. got more detail. it sounds like it was a semi truck pulling. well, you know those autos loaded with those autos on the double rack, i think. anyways, it's got some diesel fuel spilled on the roadway. so we have a couple of lanes that may be blocked for a bit of time. we're checking to see the speed sensors hold steady for south 680. it may just be the marsh view off ramp. i'm hoping it's just that off ramp. and i'm hoping they can keep that off ramp open. but meanwhile if you want to choose, you can choose westbound 80 as your alternate coming down off the cordelia junction. the only slowing is highway 37 and highway four per normal. back to you. thanks, mike. 531 right now developing right now, san jose police today plan to provide an update on a weekend tragedy involving two members of the department. one did not survive both her community service officers, who were directing traffic when they were struck by a car. today in the bay's kris sanchez. live for us there at police headquarters this morning. and chris, what do we know so far about that accident? well, at this point,
5:33 am
it appears that those two officers were hit by a driver who was suspected of driving drunk as they were at a different investigation scene on monterey road. the two officers were directing traffic at an unrelated investigation when this happened. they were at monterey road and palm avenue. when they were hit, they were again at an unrelated investigation. one officer, as you said, did not survive his injuries. a second officer is in the hospital and she has major injuries. the driver was arrested by the sj pd on suspicion of dui. sapd posted a statement to social media saying, our entire police family is heartbroken by this line of duty, death and our collective arms are around his family, friends and teammates as we all cope with this painful incident. police in the area are rather people in the area. also grieved for the officer. it's just a
5:34 am
shame that somebody lost their life because some idiot drinking and driving. saddened for the for the family of the deceased officer. so this community service officer is the first to die in the line of duty in the san jose police department's ten years with the cso program. a san jose police tell us they will give us an update on the investigation this morning, and hopefully we'll find out who this officer was. additionally, we're trying to find out when the suspect is going to be in court. stay tuned for that in san jose. kris sanchez today in the bay. big loss for that department. thank you chris. well police are investigating a crash which injured five people last night in san jose. happened when a car collided with a truck just before 10 p.m. near nieman boulevard. and daniel maloney drive. police say the five victims suffered moderate to major injuries. all are expected to survive. oakland police are hoping someone comes forward
5:35 am
with information on the early morning gunfire that injured five people at a sideshow. this happened a little more than two and a four hours ago in the diamond district. this is near fruitvale and macarthur. police say that the victim self transported to a nearby hospital. the east bay times, reporting that at least four of those victims were suspected suspect spectators. two of them men and two of them women. all right. laura? well, california's largest wildfire. it is this season's growing more than 30% over the weekend. firefighters also slowed its forward progress here that park fire is burning more than four counties after starting outside of chico. it destroyed more than 640 structures. and now california's fourth largest fire on record. well, happening now, hurricane debbie is taking aim at florida panhandle, the category one hurricane made landfall along the state's big bend region early this morning. now it is
5:36 am
already leaving behind heavy flooding in the central and southwest florida areas. debbie is expected to dump historic heavy rainfall across southwest georgia and southern south carolina through friday morning. researchers are using new technology to track the storm and others like it today in the bay's ginger conejero saab joins us live with more on this. good morning, ginger. good morning laura and marcus. now researchers from a company that's headquartered right here in the bay area have deployed their technology to help track hurricane debbie. now it is a cutting edge technology, and they hope to help scientists and the public better understand these storms. and with the main goal to hopefully save lives. let's take a look at this cutting edge tool that will get them there. this is saildrone. it is a 23ft long and it's packed with cameras and sensors. it has been changing how scientists track the intensification of hurricanes and storms in changing climate patterns. now take a look at
5:37 am
some video that's been gathered by saildrone. this is from 2021, when saildrone was deployed in the middle of hurricane sam, which packed winds of over 100mph. sail drones, drones they can withstand 50 foot waves as it navigates being out in the water in the eye of the storm. it sends data back in real time. things like wind speed, wave height, and ocean temperature all to help scientists understand how hurricanes strengthen. now managing where will where saildrone goes. mission control managers back here in the bay area are doing so. it's all building up to improving forecasts, improving predictions to help give people more preparation and more lead time warnings. now the drones can last up to a year out at sea. and this specific one that's deployed for hurricane debbie will make its way back to saint petersburg, florida, in november. 11 other drones like
5:38 am
this will deploy this season into hurricane zones in florida, the virgin islands, as well as in north carolina. now, bay area mission managers and their partners at the national oceanic and atmospheric administration, or noaa, will help them redirect to chase these storms and learn more about it. now, governor newsom has also announced that he has deployed ten specialists from california to help staff fema to track this storm. we're hearing of the manpower as well as the technology that's being deployed, all with the hope of protecting lives in san francisco, ginger conejero saab today in the bay. all right. good to know. thank you. ginger. 537 right now. now let's check in with meteorologist kari hall, who's tracking hurricane debbie. yeah, the storm made landfall earlier this morning, and the heavy rain continues. it is still currently a category one with winds at 75mph. it will continue to weaken now that it is over land. and we're expecting it to become a
5:39 am
tropical storm within the next few hours. and still continuing to affect parts of the south atlantic coast over at least the next day or so. so that's going to continue to cause a lot of flooding and wind damage. so we'll continue to monitor the situation in that area here at home. we are starting out with some low clouds and fog temperatures in the low 60s in palo alto, walnut creek at 57 degrees and low 60s for san jose. here's a look at our highs for this afternoon. it will be warm in some spots with upper 80s and low 90s, but we'll continue to heat up as we go throughout the week. so we're watching the peak of the heat hitting us tomorrow. i'll have more on that in a few minutes. and mike, you've got your eye on some delays. yes, some developing right now at the bay bridge. i saw a few cars stacking up and then easing up again. the metering lights are not registered on as far as the chp blotter goes, but it looks like it's about that time. judging by the volume here and a little bit of slowing we see on the sensors. now, you'll have a little delay. also for the golden gate transit ferry
5:40 am
system, as we have the tiburon dock, it's closed today and tomorrow. and so there's a bus bridge. the alternates are posted there and on their website. do check that. if you typically use the tiburon dock, you have time to plan ahead. right now we're looking at the smooth flow of traffic. and there's some of that slowing we saw on those sensors that's developing here. highway 37, highway four, all showing the similar patterns we typically see looking ahead as we get in towards san francisco tonight. there is a concert over at chase, and i know it's off of the freeways, but 280 extension might see some more traffic getting over to see jenny aiko over at the concert. i know i'd like to go, but we can't do anything after 5:00. otherwise we will now show up the next day. in any case, over here, this is also after five. this is 640 the coliseum. the athletics will be playing tonight, so there will be some traffic flow before and after the game as well. depending on what time you get out of work, that will affect or might not affect you. on the nimitz in the south bay, we have the typical build starting for northbound 101. watch for that through san jose. pretty typical pattern there and no big surprises out of the altamont. it's traffic back to you. no one knows this schedule

a look at our day planner will be in the low 60s and a few clouds to start out this morning at 8:00, but at noon it's at a really nice 82 degrees. after that it does get hot. we're headed for the low 90s here today, and we will see more 90s in the forecast throughout the next few days. so we'll take a look at those numbers coming up in a few minutes. yeah. it looks like some of those cars might have touched the lens here. we're at our berkeley camera looking at the berkeley curve. the commute here around the bend and over toward the bay bridge toll plaza. the metering lights are registered on there, so we should start to see a bit of a backup happening in the next few minutes. here we are seeing the build here for richmond over towards san rafael. also the
5:45 am
westbound direction heading into the north bay no problems, but we see the change. well, breaking news overnight in bangladesh. that's where the capital is descending into chaos. this is after the prime minister dramatically ending her 15 year regime. the violence started with student protests. as of this morning, at least 300 people, including 14 police officers, have died. prime minister resigned this morning and protesters defied a military curfew, storming her official residence. the prime minister has now moved to a safer location. the leader of the military is launching an effort to form an interim government. a pennsylvania mother is taking the opioid crisis head on after experiencing her own unimaginable pain. doctor bonnie mills is a professor of clinical anesthesiology at the university of pennsylvania. she lost both of her sons to the opioid crisis through accidental overdoses. she now works with the ready to rescue campaign to hopefully deliver her message to other parents in time to save lives.
5:46 am
she recommends parents have the conversation with their children about opioids and their dangers. data shows in 2022, an average of 22 high school aged minors died each week from fentanyl overdoses. she and her group raised awareness about the risks, what to look out for in providing greater accessibility to overdose. reversing drugs like naloxone. now that we're thinking about sending our kids back to school, that it should be in every school system and every dorm, and we should think about putting it in their backpacks as they head back to school, she says. there are clear, straightforward signs of a possible overdose. everyone should be aware of first. the victim typically loses consciousness. people should check lips, fingernails and fingertips, which will turn blue when someone is not receiving enough oxygen and the pupils typically become small. 546 right now to decision 2024 very strange story coming out of robert kennedy junior's
5:47 am
independent campaign for president. this is just strange. it really is. and scott, this involves a baby bear and a bicycle. and this sounds like it's going to be a funny story. and i assure you it is not. kennedy released a new video over the weekend telling a story about a dead bear cub. he found it had been hit by a car. the incident apparently took place some years ago. a news agency had gotten ahold of this story. kennedy says he wanted to get out in front of it by telling the story himself. a young bear. so i pulled over and i picked up the bear and put him in the back of my van because i was going to skin the bear, and it was very good condition, and i was going to and put the meat in my refrigerator and you can do that. so that's roseanne barr listening to this story. kennedy goes on to say he had a busy day with a dead bear cub in the back of his car, so he didn't have time to take it home. he dumped it in central park with a

bicycle to make it look like a bike accident. i was drinking, of course, but people were drinking with me who thought this was a good idea. and i said, well, i had an old bike in my car that somebody had asked me to get rid of it. i said, let's go put the bear in central park and we'll make it look like he got hit by a bike. a fun, funny for people. so everybody thought, that's a great idea. i meantime, republican candidate for vice president jd vance, appeared on a podcast over the weekend where he told the inside story of the phone call from donald trump inviting him to be his running mate. my son, who's seven, is in the hotel room with me, and he's really into pokemon cards right now. he's going through a pokemon phase. are you guys into pokemon? i was back in the day. yeah, that's a big phase right now. i think in general. yeah, yeah. so i mean, he's really into it. so he's trying to talk to me about pikachu and i'm on the phone with donald trump and i'm like, son, shut the hell up for 30s about pikachu. this is the most
5:49 am
important phone call in my life. please just let me take this phone call. and he doesn't care. he's like, who's you know, he doesn't. he doesn't know what the president united states means. so, trump hears him and says, who is that? i'm like, that's my seven year old son. he's like, put him on speaker phone. and so i do. and he he he proceeds trump proceeds to read the statement that he's about to put out, making me his vp nominee. and he asks my son, he's like, what do you think about that? and my son's like, oh, it sounds pretty good. current vice president kamala harris interviewed three potential running mates over the weekend kelly, walls and shapiro. we do expect a decision later today. there's a global sell off in stocks this morning worldwide. we're monitoring that as our both campaigns. mr. trump earlier took credit for record stock markets a few weeks ago, claiming stocks were up because investors expected him to win. now, he says, the massive, massive plunge is biden and harris fault. really, it's the fed maybe waiting too long to lower interest rates. laura, we'll have a lot more coming up

in business news coming up at six. okay. thank you very much, scott. 549 right now, exciting week in the city by the bay, san francisco, hosting outside lands. it's kicking off this weekend, but you may want to be aware of some park closures which will start ramping up today. as of this morning, marks meadow is off limits. also, the closures widen along jfk drive. the festival will run through sunday. they've got a really great lineup, starting with the killers on friday. all right. we'll take a look at this trending for you this morning. deadpool and wolverine now the highest grossing r-rated movie ever. yeah, in its second weekend, the marvel studios blockbuster steamrolled through the theaters and making $97 million, raising that total for two weeks. $396 million. that pushes it past a long reigning top r-rated film, the passion of christ. that movie held the title for some 20 years. wow. very different topic. there it is. well, now to a live look at
5:51 am
the paris, the olympic cauldron. athletes around the world have been no doubt indulging in the city of light. yeah, but that's not the only thing they've been indulging in. the chocolate muffins from the olympic dining hall is also getting some enjoyment. there. lady, help me tonight. okay, so that's norwegian swimmer henrik christiansen. he actually posted not one, but two. well, not even that. he actually posted eight entire videos about the chocolate muffin from the dining hall. and they have gone viral each time. and you know what? can you get one chip? that's the question. maybe jessica can, you know, bring something, poured them with those croissants. she's been having. but i heard that some of the athletes are sneaking them out to give to their parents. oh, so they could
5:52 am
sample them? they're supposed to be amazing. and i think they're serving. i don't know, a, like, a million of those muffins. well, well, they are burning a lot of calories. they're like, we need to replenish that. but then when you're that chef that made that and then that's the hit like that's going to make you feel good. hopefully open a little store somewhere. gold medal winning. yes. nice. we see that continuing that story. yeah. take all you can eat but eat what you take and you're doing it right. all right okay. so monday morning looking forward to a little bit of a warm up. not too hot. hopefully that's a little hot in some areas. not too much. not like the heat wave we had earlier last month. so we are starting out with our marine layer in the clouds. we know that usually leads to a milder day, so we're going to see temperatures in the valleys headed for the 90s and a few spots up to 100 degrees. it will be breezy in the hills and mountains, elevating the fire danger. but then some cooler weather coming late in the week.
5:53 am
here's a live look outside in walnut creek as we're getting started heading out the door to a partly cloudy sky here in temperatures in the upper 50s. nice and cool at 10:00 we'll be at 67 degrees, and at noon it's 74 and looking at highs in the low 80s for this afternoon. but as we take a look at temperatures across the bay area it's really going to depend on your location because in san francisco, the peninsula, it's going to be very comfortable with highs in the upper 60s. and then even for parts of the inner bay, for the east bay, it will be in the upper 70s and a few low 80s. but then when you head into napa and sonoma valleys, it's going to be hot with highs in the upper 80s and then some low 90s expected for the south county today. tomorrow we see the heat cranking up even more, and this will be the peak of the temperatures that we'll see throughout the workweek. so we're going to see a lot of upper 90s, a few triple digit temperatures like concord, fairfield, vacaville as well as clear lake and ukiah. while we will see a lot of 90s for much
5:54 am
of the rest of the north bay, san francisco is keeping it cool with some low 70s. there and then on wednesday it's starting to cool down. just a little bit more. we won't see as much of a major heat risk for the inland valleys, but it still will reach into the mid 90s for san martin, livermore, as well as in parts of the north bay. vacaville headed for 98 degrees on wednesday and overall our weather pattern, the setup that we're seeing is high pressure centered over the southwest, but it's also going to draw in quite a bit of moisture for areas just off to the east, causing some thunderstorms. of course, all of that staying away from the bay area, but we will see the return of our cool ocean breeze and some slightly lower temperatures for thursday and friday. and then for the weekend. it will be hot on saturday, but that won't be the case all weekend long, so we still see our temperatures going up and down over the next few days. reaching the peak tomorrow and then down by the end of the week. but san francisco is going to see a
5:55 am
little bit less in the way of fog tomorrow. highs in the low 70s and pretty nice there throughout the rest of the week. and mike, you're looking at the backup at the bay bridge. yeah pretty standard pattern here. we have the focus in the middle lanes. and now building back from the toll plaza to look at that just about mid parking lot. that's the meter that you'll hear a lot used here. and no problems off the 880 overcrossing coming down out of the maze is a smooth drive through the berkeley curve. we're not seeing much slowing, but those sensors are starting to change a little bit through richmond. typical pattern there. highway 37 and highway four, the biggest build through contra costa county, coming in toward concord and heading down 680 toward walnut creek, eventually in toward the dublin interchange. a smooth flow of traffic throughout the area coming in from the other area. other direction 580 moves smoothly out of alameda county all the way in toward the castro valley y. and there's no slowing in that direction. we are looking at the build for the south bay north 101 right on schedule. tipped off that scale. i do want to show you, first of all, vasco, we typically check in with that in 23 minutes now.
5:56 am
so there is a build coming out of contra costa county down toward 580 as well. sorry. back toward 101. there we go. we're looking at north 101 with a bit of slowing here toward oakland road. and another patch right by the airport, which is a little farther north than we often see at this time. so we're watching to see if more traffic is coming in off 87. so far, no slowing shows up, but we do know there's a build coming through san martin and morgan hill. and of course, the live look does show a pretty standard pattern. so no, nothing to alarm be alarmed about, but i'll track it and i'll let you know if there's anything to prepare for. back to you. you always keep us in the know. thanks, mike. well, happening now. concerned parents in richmond tonight. they will learn the latest on the future of a now closed public elementary school. west contra costa leaders over the summer shut down stege elementary for the short term. it follows a lawsuit over claims about environmental hazards and poor conditions. tonight parents will discuss the changes ahead of the new school year. that meeting gets underway at 6 p.m. ahead at 6:00 this morning. unstoppable in the water. i'm happy with all the results this week and happy
