tv   Today in the Bay  NBC  August 5, 2024 6:00am-7:00am PDT

6:00 am
breaking at a popular coffee shop to smash jewelry cases and windows, alarming new video. at this point, i know that the time
6:01 am
will come in the next few months when i will start resetting my goals for the next four years. but for right now, i know that i need a little breather. i think so. so what's next for gold medal olympian katie ledecky? we're going to catch up with the stanford grad at the olympics after multiple wins over in paris. this is today in the bay like we've had a career like that. you can. i think simone biles talked about that. she's like, don't ask me what's next. like i'm enjoying this now, right? and hopefully you're enjoying your monday morning with us. i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. okay. so what is next? we can ask that when it comes to the weather. right. that's that's kind of, you know, its own little thing. you know, we kind of expect that we are going to start out with some clouds. and as we take a live look outside in san jose, we are going to see a mix of sun and clouds throughout the morning. and temperatures going from low 60s at 9:00 to some
6:02 am
upper 70s at 1:00. and eventually we'll make it into the low 80s. and then as we take a look all around the bay area, we are going to see temperatures in the upper 70s for oakland and then into the low 80s for san jose, but then low 90s for the south county. and we'll see some of the temperatures in the tri-valley cranking up just a little bit more as we go into today. but then it gets even hotter for tomorrow, and that's going to be the peak of the temperatures throughout the week. but the few triple digits in the inland east bay, as well as the north bay. so i'll be tracking all of those changes for you. and mike, you're saying that may have a traffic break going on? yeah. the chp report says it's eastbound 80 at manual compost, but the speed sensors say it's westbound. so whatever's going on is north of the cordelia junction. we're watching for that over here between highway 12 and. and i 80 and 680 there itself. so that's north again of the cordelia junction. watching that, it sounds like they're just removing some equipment, but there may be a crash in the area
6:03 am
to complicating things. so we'll double check on what's going on exactly as we look anywhere south of there, the benicia, the carquinez bridge is both move very smoothly. typical bill for highway 37, highway four, and of course, the bay bridge just filling up. now, back to you. thank you. mike well, criminals target a small coffee shop trying to make it in the bay. and now they're asking for your help to identify the person who broke in today in the bay's bob redell joins us from our newsroom this morning. and, bob, i understand there's some surveillance videos that showed what happened. fortunately there is. good morning to laura marcus, which might help catch the suspects. we spoke with the owner of keiko's coffee near saint mary's park in sf, who's asking the public to take a look at this surveillance camera video from inside her business to see if anyone recognizes the person who broke in through the front door and stole her cash register. happened yesterday morning just before 6 a.m. dacey leon tells us her phone alerted her to a burglar alarm at her business, but by the time she arrived, unfortunately, the bad guy was already gone. she's reported this to police, says this kind of crime, unfortunately, is one of the
6:04 am
many things that makes it challenging to operate a small business in the city. it's upsetting because you know, it's something you're building and you're trying to do something, you know, working out your way up and then for them to come in and just take it like that, it's upsetting. you know, we work for this and you know, it's not about the money, but it's the principle. you know, that's what upsets me the most. in this is cell phone video from just before 7:00 saturday night, where thieves smashed cases at the k jewelry store is at the stonestown galleria in sf. they grabbed the jewelry, ran off, apparently in and out within a matter of minutes. we spoke with a witness who off camera says the loud banging noise caught their attention. they saw what appeared to be four people using hammers or tools to break through that glass. no arrests yet. may k jewelry was closed
6:05 am
yesterday. we did reach out to brookfield properties retail, which runs the mall, and kay jewelers, for comment, but have not yet heard back. bob redell today in the bay. and the 800 still belongs to the one and only katie ledecky swimming into the record books. stanford's katie ledecky, now the most decorated u.s. woman athlete in olympic history, ledecky picking up the gold in the 800 meter freestyle over the weekend. if you didn't see it, it was great. yeah. so it's not every day that we get a chance to go one on one with olympic greatness. so today in the bay's jessica aguirre jumped at the chance to do a deep dive with the stanford alum. okay, it does not get better than this. check this out. i am here with nine time gold medalist. the most decorated female american. you know, olympian katie ledecky and
6:06 am
the stanford tree. okay, do you always travel with your own tree? oh, of course, i mean, of course. got to represent the stanford cardinal. okay look at this hardware. unbelievable it's. can you breathe now or are you raring to go again? yeah, i can, i can breathe now. i can use a little bit of time to reset and think about what what just happened. let it sink in a little bit. but i'll be getting back in the pool pretty soon, i would think. i know, i just read somewhere that you want to go and rest a little bit, and then your idea of resting is actually swimming. yeah, you know, it's summertime, so it's always good to hop in the pool and cool off. and i'm someone that always feels better when i'm exercising. so pool is the best place to do it. how do you feel? i mean, a lot of people like to call ledecky. okay, so that moniker, and you know, you hear it all the time. we're saying it constantly. most decorated, you know, female athlete do you think of yourself that way or how does that register with you?
6:07 am
you're not doing it for the medals. it seems like you just love what you're when you're swimming. yeah, i just love it. i have so much fun and training every day with my teammates, just working toward my goals and my goals usually aren't medal counts. or to reach some historical marker, it's just times and splits and technique and pacing. so i'm, i'm happy with all the results this week and happy that i could win some medals for team usa. yeah that's wonderful. i also read that you really feel that the camaraderie of being part of a team or being part of a sport like this, or being something of something so great and so big is really important to you? yeah. you know, i think a lot of people think of swimming as an individual sport, and in many ways it is. but i've been lucky to be part of some really great team usa teams, my high school swim team, my club swim team and of course the stanford team. we won some national national titles together. so i love any time i get to be a part of a
6:08 am
team and team usa in the pool, we came out on top this week, which i'm so proud of. yeah, so when you do something like this, are you already thinking about the next olympics? or when people ask you this dumb question, are you like, not again, someone's asking me the same question. it's not a dumb question. i know a lot of people are excited about los angeles, so i, i am trying to not think about it at this point. i know that the time will come in the next few months, when i will start resetting my goals for the next four years, but for right now, i. i know that i need a little breather to reset, relax, enjoy this, and then go on to the next thing. okay, two metal questions. are they heavy around your neck and now that you have so many, do you keep them in a particular place? do you have to have a special case for them? how do you do it, you know, they are pretty heavy. you can feel it if you want. tell everyone. yeah, it's pretty heavy. it's very, i think they make them heavier every year. so, you know, i keep them around. it's a lot of fun to share the medals with people. so, you know, i'll
6:09 am
keep the paris ones out for some time. but, you know, after after a few months, you kind of tuck them away and, as you said, kind of on to the next. so metal party at ledecky. that's what we got from this. all right. i have to ask the tree something. tree? you know, you have more than 60 athletes here, and you've earned a lot of hardware. what is the secret to the stanford success? i think it's a community of excellence and really each other really pushing each other to be the best. this amazing community of stanford athletes and of course, the facilities, the community, the coaches, each athlete pushing each other to be the best in their own respective sport, and of course, big fans. i think everyone at stanford is cheering for every stanford athlete, myself being the biggest stanford fan in the world, are you super excited to be hanging with katie ledecky? i'm so excited. katie is like the iconic stanford member. so, you know, i joined the stanford band for a week. you did, i did, i did not just one day i did the full week. i went to the rehearsal. i played the sax. i
6:10 am
never played the sax before. i learned all right now and were you the best at that too? no. you know, everyone kind of drowned out my sound, so it was good. i got to dance around on the field and do the formations and all that. so i feel like i'm a member of the stanford band. i think you could be a member of whatever you want to be. katie ledecky and the stanford tree, everybody all right? does it get better? it does not. that was great. you seem pretty excited about being with a band. i know. right? what's next? the band. all right, look, you can watch the women's beam and floor gymnastics finals tonight in prime time. right here on nbc bay area. and then don't forget to catch team usa's track and field athletes going head to head. that's going to include the 800 meter race where medals are on the line. all of that action kicking off tonight at 8:00 right here on nbc. bay area now, meteorologist kari hall, she is tracking the weather and how it's shaping up in paris. as we enter the final week of competition. happy monday! we're excited to see what will happen in the olympics today. weather
6:11 am
wise, it looks a little warm with those temperatures in the mid 80s for today and tomorrow's word of the day in france will be show or hot. we'll see those temperatures cranking up into the upper 80s, and then down a little bit as we go toward the middle of the week with highs in the low 80s. these numbers still slightly above what's normal for this time of year. but it's going to be nice with a lot of sunshine. we'll just have to make sure they stay hydrated and we'll be watching our forecast as well. i'll have another look at our microclimate forecast for now. i'll send it back to you. thanks so much, kari. all right. well, target is closing more stores ahead for you here on today in the bay locations being shut down and the impact it will have on jobs in that community and a global selloff in stocks. we could lose about 1200 points off the dow off the top. let's take a look and double check that on the futures. yeah it's about a thousand. now we'll tell you what's going on coming up. plus sha'carri richardson has got some left to do. look at him
6:12 am
go pausing to actually watch the fastest women on earth. we're going to show you which singer actually stopped her entire concert just to tune in. but first, here's a look at the current medal count as we head to break. we'll be right back introducing togo's new barbecue beef sandwich. it's piled high with tender beef that's slow cooked and smothered in tangy memphis style barbecue sauce. it's no fuss, no muss.
6:13 am
just tons of flavor. the best barbecue beef is only a togo's. try one today.
6:14 am
6:15 am
it is mostly cloudy and it's also cool with temperatures in the low 60s that will stick around through 9:00. and then as the sky clears, temperatures will be warming up. but we're still feeling some pretty nice weather here today with some low 80s for the afternoon, but it will be slightly hotter tomorrow. we'll talk about the rise in temperatures across our microclimates coming up. yeah, a little haze on this shot here for the san mateo bridge as well. but you know, you can see the roadway clearly. even the high rise, those taillights filling in the westbound commute direction. but no big surprises, no big slowing. westbound bridges are the trend. so we'll see how that trend plays out on those speed sensors coming up. well, good morning. very happy monday to you. although i'm not sure it's going to be happy on wall street. there is a global sell off that started friday after the weak american jobs report started here. went around the world to the london stock exchange, euronext. hong kong nikkei and back around as the world turns. so these are
6:16 am
friday's numbers. we expect more of the same on the markets in america. 630 our time again that weak american jobs number combined with lower factory orders have investors worried. let's go out to the future. showed this to you before the commercial. they've gotten worse. dow industrials now expected to lose 100 points off the top of the open. these are the bets that the traders make on the open. all right. well in the past a poor showing of jobs might have actually made investors happy because they would know it put pressure on the fed to lower interest rates. but we now already know the fed's going to lower interest rates in september. that's right. before the next presidential election, by the way, which is awkward. the fed is supposed to be an independent body above politics. it has to lower rates though. and when it does, it's going to benefit the biden-harris administration, but only coincidentally. it's very awkward because central banks push so hard to be independent
6:17 am
that when they all of a sudden look as if they are having effects on election outcomes, that reduces the level to which they can argue that they are independent. the crisis on wall street this morning, pushing mortgage rates to recent lows. more about this whole thing throughout the day. other news crowdstrike says it shouldn't be blamed for delta airlines flight disruptions. delta says the meltdown cost it a half billion dollars once take legal action against crowdstrike. delta's computers did go down, but boy, delta took much longer to recover. on a happier note, we were talking about this earlier over the weekend, the san jose burn foundation had a chili cook off at santa clara county fair. i was a judge. fair goers? fair goers rather could also judge they got the different chilies by various san jose firehouses, this one pretending to be the ditka firehouse. teams of nurses were involved as well from various hospitals. there's firehouse 21. the money raised supports camps for kids with
6:18 am
burns, among other things. the winner, team six from station 13 on pearl avenue in san jose. a tough decision coming down, guy. number six. great man, there's nothing like pride in a chili. well made. you were asking me earlier, you know. how do you hold up? i'm a scot irish from the midwest, you know. and i thought, oh, man, it was great. you're good. some of them were a little too california for me. a little too much avocado, that kind of stuff. oh, wow, you know, my voted with the traditional. you like the. well, isn't that a debate, beans or no beans or something, right? yes. i think texas says no beans, right? oh, really? yeah. okay. but heartburn under control. under control. okay. good to know. no thanks guys. 617 right now new at 6:00 a new layoff filing confirms target closing its east palo alto location at the end of september. the story store rather employs 85 workers.
6:19 am
last week, target told sfgate it was due to underperformance. company executives say employees would have the opportunity to transfer to other locations. this will actually be the fourth bay area target store to close over the past year. the other three were due to theft. 618 right now and trending this morning, adele showing her support for the paris olympics. actually, during one of her shows, the singer, who is performing a string of shows over in munich, literally brought the games on the stage. pausing her performance of that show for the women's 100 meter final live, the women's olympic 100 meter final. away first time satan gets an excellent sha'carri richardson gets left a little bit. it's julian. alfred is out in front and julian alfred's got this to win. yeah less than 11 seconds. it was over ultimately there saint lucia's julian alfred taki home the gold in the 100 meter final finishing that race in
6:20 am
10.72 seconds, making this the first olympic gold medal in the country's history. yeah. team usa sha'carri richardson came in second and melissa jefferson coming in third. you know, what i like is when they put just average people next to them. oh yeah. and then you try to run and then you really get a sense of how fast it is because you think you're like, well, you know, like, oh, okay. the camera swings back, let's go check on mike. i'll be back. you're halfway like on here i come. it's amazing. well, we all have our talents, right? we do. there was this huge buildup to the race. and, you know, we're watching. we're all nervous. and then i think i blinked and it was over. it happened so fast, and i was like, oh, it's done exactly fast. all right. yeah. all right. so we're looking at some warmer weather and hopefully this lasts a very short while because we are going to see those temperatures going up. and then back down as we go into the week. but we are starting out cloudy. it's nice and cool right now all across
6:21 am
the bay area, but we will have some warmer air ahead for the inland valleys. we'll see temperatures in the 90s and even a few highs up to 100 degrees. it will also be breezy in the hills and mountains, which will increase the fire danger, and then it will be cooling later in the week. so this is a look at the way fremont is starting the day upper 50s and cloudy. we'll start to see peeks of sunshine around 9 to 10:00 and some low 60s. but then as we go throughout the day, we'll be in the low 70s. really nice afternoon and just a touch warmer than it was yesterday. but here we're in the upper 70s. throughout the afternoon, a few more clouds moving in this evening once again as we drop down to the mid 60s. and then in san jose, we'll see a high of 81 today before the south county, the heat is already starting to crank up, so we'll see some low 90s for later today, 95 for fairfield and vacaville and in napa today 88 degrees, while oakland will be in the mid 70s and san francisco reaching 69 degrees tomorrow. just a little bit warmer in spots like san
6:22 am
mateo will be in the mid 70s. hayward will reach a high of 84 and 94. los gatos, but you can see those highs over 100 degrees from ukiah to clear lake to fairfield. and then it starts to come back down for wednesday and that will be the cooler air. we'll see continuing throughout the end of the week. we'll really feel that near the coastline. but overall, as we look across the region, it's mainly high pressure. that's kind of been waving back and forth going from east to west. but not really moving too much. so we're looking at at times cooler weather as that high moves away. and then once it gets closer to the bay area those temperatures heat up. so we're going to see a little bit of a cool down by the end of the week. but still a warm weekend in san francisco keeps the clouds and fog and the cooler weather there and along the coastline. mike, you were really watching i 80 right now. yeah, because of course that's the bay bridge and the toll plaza filling in now, just the last ten minutes has seen a lot more traffic volume come into the
6:23 am
area. no major concern as you look at the berkeley curve and the richmond area, actually speed sensors holding up just fine here. but up at the top of the screen, as we look at your typical patterns around most of the bay, contra costa county and marin county, we are looking at a lot more slowing coming into fairfield, which should start to improve actually, because they just cleared lanes about six minutes ago, westbound 80 at cordelia. so this big backup will now make its way down i-80 toward the bay bridge corridor. everything else is moving very smoothly for this monday. back to you. thanks, mike. 622 right now, coming up next on today in the bay nbc bay area responds. he bought a pricey tool kit that the seller delivered to someone else. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura, nbc bay area responds

never made it to his doorstep. after being locked in limbo with the company for more than a month, he contacted consumer investigator chris kimura's team to deliver some results. good morning, joshua says amazon sent him this message right here saying it delivered the $315 tool kit he ordered. one problem with this photograph right here, though it shows the package delivered to the wrong san francisco apartment. joshua says he flagged amazon it, told him to go ahead and file a police report. he did, but joshua says
6:27 am
amazon kept refusing to issue him a refund or send him a new tool kit. so he tapped our team. we contacted amazon. it then refunded joshua $315 and told us this. we were able to issue the customer a refund after receiving and verifying the proper police report. sometimes a police report is critical when deliveries go mia. yeah, it's true cops might not investigate, but some companies require you to file a police report to get your money back. it's just part of the process. if that process doesn't work, let us know. snap the qr code on screen right now to fill out our consumer complaint form online. thanks, chris. well, a lot more ahead for you at 630 this morning, including breaking news. we are keeping our eyes on the opening bell after a volatile week on the stock market. plus, the flags are at half staff here at san jose police headquarters after the death of a community

uncertainty at the opening bell after the dow and nasdaq sustained a huge sell off to end last week. futures tumbling. scott mcgrew is watching the numbers breaking down what it may mean for you and that. 401k searching for answers a police department rocked after a car strikes two of its community service officers, killing one of them. we're live with new details on the suspect, and we'll take you live to paris to catch up with one bay area swimmer basking in her latest gold medal glory. this is today in the bay welcome to monday morning, 630. right now. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia, and i'm marcus washington. want to get you caught up on that forecast this morning. meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect out there. kari. looking good
6:32 am
this morning. yeah, it looks good. we're starting out cloudy for much of the bay area, but it's going to quickly clear out. and we'll see those temperatures warming up again. it's going to be a slightly warmer day compared to yesterday. and we're right now at 57 in walnut creek, 54 in san francisco. and we're seeing some low 60s in san jose. and a look at our high temperatures for this afternoon will range from mid 60s near the coast and upper 60s for san francisco, with upper 80s for the north bay, and even as hot as 98 degrees for clear lake and ukiah, while san jose will see still some warm temperatures, but not that warm. it will be in the low 80s later today, so we'll talk about higher temperatures in our microclimate forecast. that's coming up in a few minutes. thank you. kari. well, breaking news, the american stock market just opened and is already deep in the red. tough start to the morning. stocks have been plunging after a few weeks after they hit those all time highs, scott mcgrew is really that friday jobs report that really set things off. yeah it was. and then there was a manufacturing
6:33 am
report on thursday just before that showing a weakening of the economy. and lauren marcus, i've talked so many times about how weak data actually tends to make the stock market go higher, because the encouragement to the fed to lower rates. but we already knew the fed was going to lower rates in september. so this weak data is nothing but disappointing right now. dow industrials are down a thousand points. that's about 2%. the nasdaq is also down about 1000 points. that's 6%. and into corrections territory or very close to it a bear market. we'll continue to monitor these numbers, which of course have political implications as well. we'll talk about the politics coming up in just a few minutes, laura. all right. thank you very much scott. developing right now san jose police today plan to provide an update on a weekend tragedy involving two members of their department. one did not survive. both our community service officers who were directing traffic when they were
6:34 am
struck by a car today in the bay's kris sanchez joins us live this morning. she's over at police headquarters. so what do we know so far about this accident? so right now what san jose police are telling us is that they believe that the suspect they arrested is, was driving under the influence. one officer did not survive the other one is in the hospital with very serious injuries. so the two officers were directing traffic at an unrelated incident when this happened. when this driver plowed into them, they. one officer did not survive again. the driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. san jose police did post a statement to social media saying, our entire police family is heartbroken by this line of duty, death and our collective arms are around his family, friends and teammates as we all cope with this painful incident. police in the area also grieving for that officer. it's just a shame somebody lost
6:35 am
their life because some idiot drinking and driving. saddened for for the the family of the deceased officer. i appreciate. the community service officer is the first to die in the line of duty in the san jose police department's ten years with this community service officer program. san jose police tell us that they will give us an update on this investigation. today. we are working to find out who this officer is. we're also working to find out when that suspect is going to be before a judge, which will happen likely today in san jose. kris sanchez today in the bay. a big loss for that department. thank you, chris, for the latest. well happening now hurricane debbie is taking aim at the florida panhandle now this is a live look for you this morning at citrus county. this is where we're seeing some flooding there in that area. now the category one hurricane made landfall along the state's big bend region early this morning. and it is already leaving behind heavy flooding in the central
6:36 am
and southwest florida areas. now, debbie expected to dump historic heavy rainfall across southwest georgia and south carolina through friday morning. researchers are using new technology to track the storm and others just like it today in the bay's ginger conejero saab live for us this morning with more ginger. good morning marcus. well, researchers from a company that's headquartered right here in the bay area have deployed their technology to help track hurricane debbie. it is cutting edge technology. it is referred to that, and it will help scientists as well as the public better understand these storms and hopefully help save lives. now this is a look at that cutting edge tool which is called the saildrone. it is 23ft long and it's packed with cameras and sensors. it has been changing how scientists track the intensification of hurricanes and storms in this changing climate pattern. take a look at some video that's
6:37 am
gathered by saildrone. this is from 2021 wilk. when saildrone was deployed in the middle of hurricane sam, which packed winds of over 100mph. now saildrones drones can also withstand 50 foot waves as it navigates being out in the water in the eye of the storm. it sends back data in real time things like wind speed, wave height and ocean temperature, and it helps scientists understand how hurricanes strengthen, managing where saildrone goes. well, mission control managers are back here in the bay area. it's all building up to improving forecasts, improving predictions to help give people more preparation and more lead time warnings. now, drones can last up to a year at sea, and this specific one that's deployed by hurricane or for hurricane debby will make its way back to saint petersburg, florida, around november. now, 11 other drones
6:38 am
like this will be deployed this season into hurricane zones like in florida, the virgin islands, and in north carolina. bay area mission managers and their partners at the national oceanic and atmospheric administration, or noaa, are redirecting them to chase these storms. now, governor newsom has also announced that he has deployed ten specialists from california to help staff fema in tracking this storm. we're hearing of manpower as well as technology helping to protect lives in san francisco, ginger conejero saab today in the bay, any technology that can help people and save lives is great. all right, ginger, thank you. now carry look, working with you for some time. two questions i know to ask were one is the storm strengthening or is it weakening or is it fast moving. because i know slower the storm, the more it can dump that rain in areas. well, now it's over land, so we're not expecting it to weaken anymore. it made landfall earlier this morning and it is going to be a fairly slow mover. so we're expecting a lot of
6:39 am
heavy rain with this. it is still a category one as it continues to move off towards the north and east, and it currently has wind speeds at 75mph. as we go into the next couple of days, it will slowly move into parts of south georgia and south carolina and then back out into the atlantic as it weakens into a tropical storm. so we'll continue to watch that. as you look at the names on the list, there, we've made it to debby. the next one would be a nurse arnesto, and we've had quite a few of those names that have yet to happen on the list there. so we'll continue to monitor the hurricane season as we take a look at dublin. right now it's a cloudy morning as you're heading out and we'll see you clearing out here fairly quickly by 9 to 10:00 and temperatures going from low 60s to low 80s for today. and just a touch warmer than it was yesterday, with a high of 85 there and in concord 93, we're going to see a lot more 90s and even highs up to 100 degrees for
6:40 am
tomorrow. we'll talk about that in a few minutes. mike, you're tracking some trees across the highway. yeah. and first of all, let's show the big map here and around the perimeter. perimeter of the bay, everything looks just fine. alameda county, we're looking at 680 coming down out of san ramon, all the way into the south bay. it's all right. northbound. actually, we've seen great improvement over the last three minutes. these speed sensors suddenly started clearing. they may have cleared these eucalyptus trees that came down across northbound 17 as you're coming up through scotts valley. so we'll watch for that. the southbound side was open, but they were having to route traffic to that center divide area. i was concerned about spectators slowing. guess it's not there. meanwhile, as we look ahead, we're looking at a concert at chase center. so tonight, watch for janet acres fans through the area just off of 280. that will increase traffic to that portion of the city. and a note if you do ride golden gate ferry at tiburon dock will be closed today and tomorrow. and so there's a bus bridge alternates posted on their website. back to you. thanks mike. we're breaking news overseas as the long standing prime minister of bangladesh

strange story coming out of robert kennedy jr's independent campaign for president. now, scott, this is a very interesting story here. it involves not only the baby bear, but a bicycle, which sounds like it might be a funny story and i assure you it is not at all a funny story. kennedy over the weekend released a new video telling a story about a dead bear cub. he found it had been hit by a car. the incident apparently took place some years ago, but a news agency had gotten a hold of this story, and kennedy said he wanted to get out in front of it by telling the story himself. a young bear. so i pulled over and i picked up the bear and put him in the back of my van because i was going to skin the bear, and it was very good condition, and i was going to and put the meat, my refrigerator and you can do that. so that's roseanne barr listening to his story, kennedy goes on to say he had a busy day that day with a dead bear cub in
6:46 am
the back of his car. so he didn't have time to take it home. so he dumped it in central park with a bicycle to make it look like a bike accident. i was drinking, of course, but people were drinking with me who thought this was a good idea. and i said, well, i had an old bike in my car that somebody had asked me to get rid of it. i said, let's go put the bear in central park and we'll make it look like he got hit by a bike. be fun and funny for people. so everybody thought, that's a great idea. republican candidate for vice president jd vance, meanwhile, appeared on a podcast over the weekend where he told the inside story of the phone call from donald trump inviting him to be his running mate. my son, who's seven, is in the hotel room with me, and he's really into pokemon cards right now. he's going through a pokemon phase. are you guys into pokemon? i was back in the day. yeah, that's a big phase right now. i think in general. yeah, yeah. so i mean, he's really into it. so he's trying to talk to me about pikachu and i'm on
6:47 am
the phone with donald trump and i'm like, son, shut the hell up for 30s about pikachu. this is the most important phone call in my life. please just let me take this phone call. and he doesn't care. he's like, who's you know, he doesn't know what the president united states means. so trump hears him and says, who is that? i'm like, that's my seven year old son. he's like, put him on speaker phone. and so i do. and he he he proceeds trump proceeds to read the statement that he's about to put out, making me his vp nominee. and he asks my son, he's like, what do you think about that? and my son's like, oh, it sounds pretty good. current vice president kamala harris interviewed three potential running mates in person over the weekend kelly, walls and shapiro. we expect a decision as soon as today. now there's a global sell off in stocks as well. today we're monitoring that as our both campaigns. mr. trump earlier took credit for record stock markets a few weeks ago, claiming stocks were up because investors expected him to win. he now says this massive plunge is biden and harris

fault. really, it's probably the fed waiting too long to lower interest rates. we'll watch it, laura, throughout the day. thank you very much. we sure will. at 647 right now, turning now to a big event in san francisco. concert attendees no doubt counting down to outside land, starting this friday. but you may want to be aware of more park closures, which actually start ramping up today. as of this morning, marks meadow off limits. also, the closures widened along jfk drive. that festival will run through sunday, and attendees are not the only ones excited for this weekend's music festival. king room outside lands mascot ranger dave and ranger ruth going viral on tiktok ahead of the event. both seem particularly jazzed about seeing two big acts, chappell, roan and sabrina carpenter ranger ruth, even reaching out to chappell, who is known for her elaborate

costumes. ruth says, hey, she's ready to step in if chappell needs to borrow anything. and that outfit, big hat could be sunny showstopper. if they head inland, it could be sunny. yeah, yeah, we know it's going to be cool this weekend for outside lands. and you see people come from out of town and they're just not ready, right? like california sunshine. oh wait, a summer in san francisco. well, we're starting out with temperatures in the mid 50s right now. as you're heading out on this monday morning, it's 57 in concord. and we're also seeing mid to upper 50s in the north bay. nice cool refreshing morning. and we're going to see things warming up just a little bit more than it did yesterday. so napa is going from upper 50s at 9:00 to an 11:00 temperature of 67. upper 70s at 1:00, and then into the low 80s for a couple of hours during the middle of the day. still really nice. and it's a great start to our workweek, but we are seeing some temperatures warming up
6:50 am
like concord today, headed for 93 degrees and 98 in clear lake, while along the coastline it's in the 60s, so there still will be a wide range in temperatures. and that gap gets even bigger tomorrow because the coastline stays in the 60s. but our valleys are headed for the upper 90s and even triple digits. vacaville fairfield will reach 101 and upper 90s for morgan hill, san martin and gilroy. this is the peak of the heat on tuesday, wednesday. it's still hot in some of the valleys, but not as hot. so we are going to see the numbers continuing to slide through the end of the week and giving us a bit of a break, but overall, across the region, we've seen a very active storm pattern off towards the east, and that high pressure is just kind of waving back and forth across the southwest. when he gets closer, our temperatures heat up. when it moves off towards the east, our temperatures start to come down. so take a look at the trend throughout the week. we're seeing those triple digits in the forecast for tomorrow. and then on wednesday we're in the mid 90s and then upper 80s for
6:51 am
the end of the week. the weekend still a little warm in some spots, but san francisco's keeping it cool. we'll see more 60s in the forecast through much of the week. and mike, you're seeing more slowing now in the south bay. yeah, i'll be honest though, if you were with us in the 5:00 around 5:00 in the morning, i was concerned because it looked like a bigger volume through the south bay. then it kind of held off kind of similar for most of the bay, but we are seeing one on one. and now 87 showing your traditional slower spots. so we're holding to the standard pattern so far a little build off the castro valley. why nothing alarming. also the nimitz heading down through fremont and newark. we're jumping around here, folks, but we want to cover this north bay where westbound 80 recovers. the earlier crash cleared at cordelia road. back to you. thank you. mike well, happening now. concerned parents in richmond tonight will learn the latest on the future of a now closed public elementary school. west contra costa leaders over the summer shut down stege elementary for the short term. it follows a lawsuit over claims about environmental hazards and poor conditions. tonight, parents will discuss the changes

live look at the big board this morning. the numbers continue to fall. friday's weak jobs report meant big losses on friday, which have just carried on to today. hey san jose community service officer was killed while on the job by a suspected drunk driver over the weekend. another cso working with him is in the hospital. the officers were directing traffic at an unrelated investigation on monterey road and palm avenue. this was saturday night when this happened. the suspected drunk driver was arrested. police say they'll provide an update on the investigation later today. san francisco police still looking for the suspects who robbed a jewelry store this weekend. this is cell phone video from just before 7:00 on saturday night. where thieves smashed cases at the k jewelry store in stonestown galleria. they grabbed the jewelry and ran off. we spoke with a witness off camera who says a loud banging noise caught their attention. they saw what
6:57 am
appeared to be four people using hammers or tools. so far, no arrests have been made. well, we are in the final week of competition over at the 2024 paris olympics, and one swimmer has already made the bay area very happy today in the bay's jessica aguirre joins us live from paris. regan smith definitely has a lot to be proud of. oh boy does she. and do i have a treat for you? check this out regan smith with so much bling. okay regan, you've just been the star of these games. is there one of these medals that meant the most for you? i mean, did you come in with a number of what you wanted to accomplish? i wanted to medal in every single one of my events and i did that. so i'm so thrilled. all of these mean equally mean equally as much to me. of course, the four by 100 medley gold was incredible because we broke a world record as well, so that was very special. but all of these mean so much to me, and these are all part of the plan. when you are in this medal hunt,
6:58 am
is there a moment where it clicks with you that you think to yourself, i am going to medal in this, i try to never get too confident and too comfortable, right? like you always want to stay hungry. and so during the race, like, i never want to be in a position where i'm like, oh, like, i've got this in the bag. i'm good. i think i always want the mentality to be like, no, i got to, i got to go for this 100% for the entire time, right? because, you know, these people and these events, they're so talented and they can really keep you on your toes. so i always like to try to stay hungry. i, you know, one of the themes of this olympics has been mental health. and i know in the past you've talked about how you had anxiety in some of the games. how have you met that challenge? because obviously it doesn't look like you had any anxiety this time around. yeah, i think i am three years older now, and i have a lot more life experience under my belt, and i think i've come to terms with the fact that swimming is such a passion of mine, and i love it so much, but it's not my entire life. and i think i used to not be able to separate swimming from my self-identity. and it
6:59 am
just became too much of me. like i couldn't separate myself from swimming. and so i put way too much pressure on myself because of it. and so now i realize that swimming is something that i do, but it's not who i am. and i think that's made all the difference. okay, what's up for you? for the summer? i'm just going to run around with your medals, showing them off to everybody. that's what i would do. no, my friend kate douglas and i actually were going to go on vacation here next week, so we're really excited to get some sun and some chill time and lay on the beach. if anyone deserves chill time, it is you. all right? here we are. and people look regan smith. congratulations, regan. woo! amazing. good for her. yeah that's a great place to just go on vacation now. i love that bling too. okay, look, more, olympics coverage. we've got you covered. gymnastics tonight. the women's beam and floor finals tonight in prime time. right here on nbc bay area. you can catch team usa's track and field athletes going head to head. that includes the 800 meter race. this is where medals are on the line. and all of that kicks off at 8:00 right here on nbc bay area. and you know, coming up next, the today show, just moments away. however, for
