>> congratulations, by the way. >> congrats. >> so proud. >> we have a lot to talk to them about in the next couple of hours. we want to start with the major storm back home, hurricane debby lashing florida's gulf coast. >> live look now at the heavy rain and wind it's producing after strengthening to a category 1, this is a slow mover, we're going to be following this one much of the week. >> al's tracking it from paris here with us. we want to get to jesse kirsch in perry, florida, southeast of tallahassee, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. we are now in the eye wall of debby, wind gusts around 80 miles per hour, and when they really come through it feels like we're getting pelted with hail right now. the state of florida alone already reporting more than 200,000 power outages. from what we've seen online, and we're seeing a travel impact taking shape. reports of hundreds of flight delays and cancellations

nationwide according to flight tracker, flightaware. what you're looking at right now is what we're used to seeing with hurricanes, wind gusts around 80 miles per hour here, the same area that got battered by idalia last year. what this storm is going to do, which is different from what we typically see with hurricanes, is of course there's storm surge and wind gust threat. but the bigger concern with debby is that it is moving relatively slowly at a crawl. that's going to allow so much rain to dump over the next several days. we're talking about florida, georgia, and south carolina, all three states, governors declaring states of emergency. we have seen localized totals around 30 inches of rain in some areas, this is a high risk flood day for many, and that is when we can see a lot of damage and concern about death as well. so people definitely want to be bunkering down and not venturing out into this kind of weather. right now, we are getting the eye wall of debby, the front and the north side of that eye wall. when these bands are coming

through we are really getting pelted here, it's just the beginning of what we're expecting from debby throughout the week, savannah. >> all right, jesse, near tallahassee, thank you very much. >> and further down florida's gulf coast, we find marissa parra riding out the storm there. how is it looking where you are? >> reporter: hoda, good morning from steinhatchee, florida. you can see it looks calm right now. we are in the eye of the storm. so what jesse, what you just saw with jesse is what we were experiencing about an hour ago, the wind gusts up to 90 miles per hour. i want to show you what we're keeping a close eye on right now. this is the steinhatchee river, a mile out from the gulf of mexico. and this is where the biggest threat is here. as jesse mentioned, the biggest threat with this storm, with debby, unlike idalia, this is a flood risk, storm surge, which is a community recovering from idalia one year ago. the docks behind me, they just

repaired them and rebuilt them from last year. of course, all of them hoping that they hold up during this storm here, and again, those biggest threats, not just the storm surge and the flood risk, but the tornado risk most of the state is facing, hoda. >> marissa parra for us there, thank you. >> two views of the storm, one right there, and one in the eye of the storm. and al is tracking debby. you said this one is a slow mover. >> it really is, guys. as she mentioned, debby has made landfall in steinhatchee, 80-mile-per-hour winds, moving relatively slowly, northeast at 10, and what happens once they make landfall they tend to pick up and we've also got tornado watches for much of florida, on into georgia until 4:00 this afternoon, the tropical storm warnings, watches and hurricane warnings stretching from charleston to sarasota. there's the storm surge from steinhatchee, off to the west, six to ten feet. we're also looking now at this heavy rain that's slowly going to be making its way up the coast, passing florida and georgia today, strong winds,

torrential downpours, threat of tornadoes. tomorrow, the center of the system hugs the coast, tropical deluges from south carolina to georgia, wednesday, debby still over the southeast, high risk of flooding from savannah to wilmington. we are looking right now at impact, extreme high-risk flooding for three days going right on into wednesday for flash flooding, up to 30 inches of rain, we've also got that anywhere from three to 30 inches, some places may pick up three feet of rain out of this system, the high winds causing uprooted trees, damages to home, widespread power outages and as we mentioned the risk of tornadoes stretching from spring hill up to charleston through tonight. savannah? >> al, we'll continue to watch debby throughout the morning, of course, but for the moment we'll turn to the 2024 political race. vice president kamala harris mate after meeting face to face with at least three top contenders over the weekend. and there are new questions this morning over a potential harris-trump debate and whether

that can really affect girls. >> it's contagious. >> it is. >> and the olympics is very long. they've been going for such a long time, starting from the olympic trials. when you get to the beam final and the floor final, you are exhausted. >> yeah. this is happening as we speak. i mean, first of all, you won the beam in 2008, so we know you have nerves of steel. but these athletes have to now brush it off. simone, who just fell on balance beam, which is uncharacteristic, now has to go do the floor routine of her life. jordan, too. how do you get yourself back in the game? >> i mean, they're the greatest team ever, so i'm not worried about that. i think they have trained their entire life for that purpose and for that reason. they will be able to brush it off. it is hard knowing you are at the olympic games. you have fallen. part of that will stay in their mind. but i think it will give them a vengeance going into the floor. to do better. >> we talk about where you shall -- brushing off this one isolated moment. but if you do a macro moment at what team usa gymnastics has done this olympic games, they

and a life-threatening storm surge. al has the forecast in a moment. first, nbc's jesse kirsch who joins us from perry, florida where it is still coming down hard. jesse, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. we are in hurricane debby's eye wall now. the strongest winds have passed along florida's big ben. but we are still getting quite a bit of rain out here. this hurricane is bringing high winds and storm surge threat as we always talk about with theses how slowly it is tropical storms. but the difference with debby is how slowly it is moving. so there is a real concern about the amount of rainfall we will see. not just in florida but south carolina and georgia as well over the next several days. we could see localized amounts of as much as 30 inches of rain in some areas in the days ahead. here in florida, we have reports of more than 200,000 power outages. we are looking at the impact from that as well as the travel impact throughout the day.

again, while we are passed the strongest wind gusts here, you can see quite a bit of rain coming down here, and the threat from debby is far from over. savannah? >> jesse, thank you very much. let's check on where the storm is now. where it's headed. al, what you got? >> just as jesse said, it is not so much where it is headed but how slowly it is headed. you can see right now it is still a hurricane category 1 storm. 60 miles northwest, north-northwest of cedar key. 75-mile-per-hour winds but only moving northeast at 10 miles per hour. now, the other thing we have to worry about is tornado warnings up to 4:00. six to ten foot storm surges heavy from cedar key just to the west of steinhatchee, also looking at three to five feet down to venice, florida. and this system will slowly move through florida for the strong winds, torrential downpours and tornadoes. we move into tonight and tomorrow. center of the storm just hugging the southeastern atlantic coast.

tropical deluges coming. targeting south carolina and georgia. then we move into wednesday. it just parks itself along the southeast coast. that means flooding possibility and a high risk of flooding from savannah to wilmington. and, in fact, the flash flooding through wednesday last last -- i mean, this is three days in a row. we're talking upwards of three feet of rain. that's going to cause that catastrophic flooding, plus the winds. while not really that strong, strong enough to bring in uprooted trees, damage to homes and widespread power outage. already almost a quarter of a million people out of power right now in florida and the risk of tornadoes stretching from spring hill, florida all the way up to charleston through tonight and the heavy rain makes those tornadoes tough to see. so this is going to be a very volatile situation right on toward the w >> all right, al. thank you so much. let's move to the race to the white house. vice president kamala harris closing in on her choice for a running mate. that announcement could come any time now. and this comes amid new

on the moment and see what you -- see what you got in the tank. >> kay lyn, you're 19, first olympics. even at the qualifications, you blew them out of the water. >> uh-huh. >> what did it feel like to run on that purple track? it is iconic. have you ever run on a purple track. >> i have never run on a purple track. uh i just felt really blessed. but to come out here and still be able to run fast and be with these amazing people, it just felt great. >> this is only the second game where that race of yours was contested. in the heat. you go out. world record. and then you end up medaling as well. how did it feel? >> it feels real good. it was an overall great effort from this group here. and we did an extreme job in breaking the world record. silver medalist. i'm extremely proud of this group because for myself we are all like extremely happy. >> you rocked it. bryce, you've got the full set now, right? you got a gold. you got a silver.

in the commotion of it all. i just ran out and then i'm like -- i had to like get myself back together. and then i'm like, let me get back to this mark. i cannot mess this up. i made a smooth transition back to where i needed to be so i could get the best time. >> i have always wondered what it's like to run a relay at any speed. but, you know, just like the pressure you feel to not let down your teammates. it seems great, but also so intimidating. >> it is. the mentality is definitely different. going out for the 400 individually, it is on you. but knowing that for a relay, you have to depend on your other teammates. we just trusted each other. >> melissa is the pride of georgetown, south carolina. went to coastal carolina. i've been following your career a while. i know you missed the post race news conference because you were stuck in the protocol. if you could do it all over again, the news conference were happening, who would you thank? what would you say? >> i really would want to first thank god because, you know,

>> it has to be said, we gave it our best shot. >> ryan is with us now. the muhammad ali of shot put. congratulations. >> wow. >> thank you, thank you. >> three straight times now you have done it. one of the things that a lot of folks may not know about your story, you overcame a lot this season. you had the elbow surgery. your peck was messed up as well. does that make it sweeter? >> yeah, i think definitely. if it's easy, it doesn't mean as much. so there was a lot of times where i wasn't sure i would get to the level i needed to be. so overcoming those self-doubts and those questions makes it all the sweeter. so i appreciate this one the most. >> you talked about the fact that there is the physical part of it, but a huge part of this is the mental part of it. >> uh-huh, yeah. so it is the physical prep is done weeks, months in advance. and the mental is really who is going to win it on the day. everybody is in good shape. everybody is strong out there.

it is can you execute that rehearsal that you have done 100,000 times to the best of your ability on the day. that's all between the ears. >> we were there watching. it was pouring rain. >> i know. people were slipping. we were worried about you. >> it is like adding another level of difficulty. >> yeah. so that rain started coming down. it was funny because we had rain in the forecast that hadn't shown up any of our training days. and then the one day we are not supposed to have rain, we did. it surprised us. definitely complicated things a little bit. >> i want to show folks at home. may have to shoot closer here. show me your hands. >> yeah. so shot put hands and non-shot put hands. you can see the right is quite a bit bigger. >> why is that? i don't get it. >> yeah. so it just takes a beating. so my hand only goes to there. any way you want to push on it, you can feel. push on the fingertips. it doesn't move. >> the muscles and fingers. >> yeah, muscular fingers.

>> yeah. so 16 pounds going almost 40 miles an hour off the fingertips. you get strong fingertips. >> how did you get into shot put? >> i started in middle school and it was shot put, discus, 4x100 relay, long jump, high jump. i didn't focus specifically on shot put until college. i was throwing at the university of texas. up until then, i was a multi-sport athlete through high school. >> and the speed, when you spin, that speed is important. that's why it makes sense you were a sprinter, too. >> yeah. there is a lot of balance and finesse and flexibility that goes into it. it is not just pure brute strength. the biggest misconception is that it's just a bench press movement. but it's mostly legs. it's much more athletic than people realize. >> you were talking about discus. one of the things that we were so impressed by, you were on your own coaching the jamaican discus thrower here. >> that's cool. >> i actually just came from the stadium.

i was there in the stands coaching roje. made it through qualifying. looking good. i will say i was sweating through my shirt. i'm way more nervous coaching than i am competing. >> oh, really? >> yeah, i'd take competing out there every day of the week. i think my heart rate is higher sitting in the stands. i have no outlet so, yeah, i'm nervous in the stands. out in the field, i'm comfortable. >> ryan crouser in l.a. going to see you defend the gold again? >> that would be the dream as an olympian to retire at olympics on home soil. for me that would be the fourth. that would be a dream come true. >> if anyone can do it, you are the man. by the way, of the three gold medals you have, is there a favorite? >> i think this one, the art work on it is beautiful. so the olympics keeps one side the same with athena in the stadium. and then in the back is up to the olympic host to decide. eiffel tower. beautiful medal. and the story behind this one with the injuries and stuff, i think this one means the most to

all right, guys. let's start with you, peter. let's start with the rowing team. i mean, the bronze, that makes it the 17th medal. am i counting right? how did this one feel? >> it's pretty special. it is surreal to have achieved a dream like this. great group of guys, wouldn't be happier. >> what about you, clark? you are the youngest on this team, right? >> yeah. i think we have all known each other. i have been with pieter since 2016, and some other guys just as long. but this is a new combination and we're really happy to get the u.s. back on the podium. >> nick, you come from a long line of rowers. mom and dad were olympians themselves, your sister rowed in tokyo. what does this medal mean to your family? >> i'm just so proud. i'm so proud to be part of my family and holding up my medal, seeing my parents in the stands, waving at them is just like one of the best moments of my life. >> let's bring in ian and hans. congrats to both of you guys.

i mean, you guys -- hans, you've been doing this since you were 6 years old, am i right? >> yes, since i've been six. sailing since i was 6. >> here you are with a medal around your neck. describe what you are feeling. >> absolutely unbelievable. it's been a dream since i have been a little boy to be at the olympic games. i couldn't even fathom winning a medal. here we are crossing that finish line, winning the bronze. it is unbelievable. there are no words for it. >> ian, you've been at it a long time too, so close to making it in tokyo, but here you are with a medal around your neck. what does it mean to you? >> it means everything. me and my family love sailing. to be able to represent the u.s. and be from a small island in the virgin islands feels like a huge achievement. >> rowing is having a big moment here. the four, the eight. >> i want to make sure we get all of you in. when you get back to the states, really quickly here, how do we plan to celebrate? >> pass the mic down. >> yeah. i'd say probably seeing some friends from home. we're all from big rowing programs, so there is a lot of guys cheering us on.

we just want to catch up with some family friends. they're all excited. we're excited. >> yeah. i'm definitely excited to get back to seattle. i haven't seen my family too much in the last two years. i have a nephew that just turned 3, so i'm excited to spend some time with him. >> sweet. >> yeah. just excited to get back home, go see a bunch of friends and, yeah, and go on a vacation before then. >> good for you. >> congrats. >> yeah. i'm with evan and pieter on this one. there is a lot of people that we haven't gotten an opportunity to see because of training and we have been on the road for seven months at this point. i'm excited to see them and spend a lot of time with family and reconnect. >> similarly, just being with my family who i haven't spent much time with and not having to feel pressure that there is anything over my head i need to attend to. that would be a pretty nice feeling.

good morning. it is 856, i'm marcus washington. well, breaking news this morning out of oakland, where word of a new deal, finalizing a new path for the oakland complex. this is where a's have agreed to sell their share of the property to the african american sports and entertainment group. that is the same group that recently purchased the city of oakland. share for $105 million. in a joint statement, both sides saying the a's will share their best interests in the group in that property for $125 million. alameda county supervisors must ultimately sign off on the deal, and oakland leaders have already announced plans to create new housing, along with entertainment, retail and sports. happening now at ginger
