it's tuesday, august 6th. "early today" starts right now. good morning, glad you're with me. i'm frances rivera. we begin with tropical storm debby, the slow-moving, deadly storm continues to threaten the southeast. debby made landfall in florida as a category 1 hurricane. parts of florida saw over a foot of rain and more than 150,000 people are without power. police in sayrasota say around 3500 500 people had to be rescued from their homes. horseshoe beach was also hit hard. jesse kirsch was there. >> reporter: here in horseshoe beach, can you see some areas still inundated with water. take a look at this street. it's hard to tell where the roadway ends and the gulf of mexico begins. >> at least four people have died in this storm. a 13-year-old was killed when a tree fell on their home. and the driver of a semi truck

was killed when the truck spun out of control going over a concrete barrier into the tampa bay canal. a flood threat will continue over the southeast. georgia and south carolina were hit by torrential rain. let' let's get an update from angie lassman. what are you watching now? >> we're watching the fact that we have days and days of rain, the potential for strong storms with tornados. but let's start with what we know right now. still tropical storm debby. 45 mile-per-hour winds moving at 7 miles per hour. can you see that big rbatch of rain. as we get into today and tomorrow, notice the system's center will come offshore. we'll see it sit over those warmer-than-normal waters and eventually making a secondary landfall by the end of the workweek. these rainfall amounts will be quite impressive. anywhere from 7 to 10 inches of

additional rain here through the next couple days. as we get into the weekend, the northeast and parts of the mid atlantic will be impacted again with additional rainfall. right now, plenty of flood alerts up. you see the flash flood alerts. jacksonville to cape hatteras dealing with flood watches as we get through the day today with the additional rain. the flash flooding will be something we keep a close eye on, frances? now to stock futures pointing to a bounce back after the worst day for the markets in nearly two years. the dow plunging over a thousand points while the nasdaq dropped almost 3.5% for the day. the selloff began in japan where the nikkei had its worst day since black monday of 1987. stocks there soared back this morning, up over 9%. the market jitters sparked by signs that growth in the u.s. is slowing, and that the fed isn't moving quickly enough on cutting interest rates. any time now we could learn the winner of the democratic

party's veep stakes. kamala harris is expected to reveal who her running mate will be. the decision coming just hours before she's expect to the campaign with this person in philadelphia tonight. and the ann nouncement on the heels of the news of the economy now taking center stage in the presidential race. here's gabe gutierrez. >> reporter: the supermarket maelt meltdown is putting what is voter's top issue back in the spotlight. donald trump hammering harris. voters have a choice, he writes, trump prosperity or the great crash and depression of 2024. >> if kamala harris wins you will have a kamala economic crash. >> reporter: the harris campaign argued trump's plans would raise costs on working families and super charge inflation. still, in a new poll, just 25% of registered voters said they'd

shapiro could help in pennsylvania but is facing backlash about pro-palestinian protesters. whoever harris picks, the pair isset to hold rallies in key battleground states throughout the week. th as tropical storm debby is forcing postponement of at least one of the stops. missouri's a.g. tried to sue the state of new york to block donald trump's gag order and sentencing in the criminal case. the lawsuit argued that voters were being prevented from hearing information from a presidential candidate. while the supreme court does hear disputes between states. a person has been injured after an attack on an air base in iraq. let's bring in josh letterman

for the latest. this attack comes amid growing tensions and fears the israel-hamas war will balloon into a bigger conflict in the region. >> reporter: that's right, frances. defense officials believe there were at least two rockets launched toward that al asad airbase in iraq. at least one of them may have landed on the base. as far as how many americans may have been injured, that is still something the military is doing, a damage assessment at this hour. we know president biden has been briefed on that attack. and defense officials suspect that a pro-iran militia may be behind that attack. now that is really concerning. because the entire middle east is really holding its breath right now for the likely and promised retaliation by iran against those two assassinations last week that have both been blamed on israel. the senior hamas political leader ismail haniyeh in iran as

well as a top hezbollah commander in lebanon. and, according to a senior israeli official, they are now bracing for a potential multi-day attack, not only from iran, which, if you'll remember, struck israel directly several months ago, but also potentially simultaneously from hezbollah. that could be very concerning for israel, could potentially trigger a regional war. and that is why president biden, secretary of state blinken and lloyd austin have been working the phones, calling regional counterparts, trying to tamp down tensions, saying everyone has a responsibility to not allow this to spiral out of control. >> thank you. new this morning, the prime minister of bangladesh has fled to india, after she resigned. footage shows protesters trying to remove the head of a statue.

demonstrators called for her to step down following job quotas in june. an interim government will be put in place. los angeles police are still searching for the group who shot and killed johnny wactor in may. new surveillance photos were shown of three suspects trying to steal a catalytic converter from his car. the actor confronted them and was shot in the chest. a federal judge ruled yesterday that google illegally holds a monopoly in online search and advertising. the tech company pays for exclusive search arrangements on apple and android devices which courts say helps secure their dominance over markets. the win was hailed as historic for the american people. google says it plans to appeal and remains focussed on making

products that people find helpful. let's get a check now on the weather for the rest of the country, with nbc meteorologist angie lassman, who's back with all of this, while the remnants of debby still seem to be chur churning. >> we've got other rain working through parts of the northeast and midwest that you'll notice as we get through the day today. we've got some of this heavy rainfall that's going to work through michigan and pennsylvania. you see some of that impacting new york city by later today. we will see the potential for the mid atlantic to pick up on additional rainfall with flood concerns for debbie. heat alerts for 39 million people in a couple spots across the country. triple digits on tap for st. louis, feeling warmer than that in memphis. even in washington, d.c., 102 is what we'll feel like as we get into the warmest part of the day today. triple digits across the southern plains as we get into tomorrow, too. that's a look at the weather across the country.
