to multiple sources with direct knowledge of the decision that vice president kamala harris has selected the minnesota governor, tim walz to be her running mate. that announcement not formally made by the campaign. we expect to hear from them shortly today. but we were told by multiple sources familiar with the process that there was really a significant chemistry between the two when walz came to the naval observatory other the weekend and they had an opportunity to meet. he is 60 years old. a bit older than kamala harris. in the words of someone familiar with the process, they described this for democrats as a perfect pair. she is young and urban and that he is mid western, rural and white haired with a lot of personality. he can be goofy and funny but also has the experience to boot. formally serving for 24 years with the national guard. he was the committee chair of the veterans affairs committee during part of his time in congress. this morning, we're waiting for any more details about when kamala harris will formally call tim walz.

we will share that with you just as soon as we get it. this thing really went down to the wire. i'm told as of late last evening harris had not formally made up her mind. she wanted to sleep on it for another evening ahead of the rally to take place later today at temple university where she will be joined on stage for the first time by governor walz. notably among those who will be introducing them is pennsylvania's governor, josh shapiro, who was another finalist. the campaign letting this go to the final day for a decision. the harris campaign provided a variety of signs with her name on top and different vp picks to be prepared for any possible scenario. >> reporter: this morning, kamala harris has chosen her running mate. the democratic nominee announced she picked minnesota governor tim walz, follows her stunning rise to the top of the ticket and featured a rapid fire vetting process. with the vice president meeting in person with at least three finalists over the weekend. arizona senator mark kelly,

pennsylvania governor josh shapiro and walz. walz a retired schoolteacher and former congressman was elected governor of minnesota in 2018. >> this is not trance formal nation for one election. this is transformational for several elections. >> keeping a low national profile, he rose to prominence as the vp search began coining the new democratic attack line against trump and his allies. >> so i think this is going back to the bread and butter. getting away from this division. we can't even go to thanksgiving dinner with our uncle because you end up in some weird fight that is unnecessary. and i think bringing back people together -- it's true. these guys are just weird. >> walz has been a fierce campaigner in recent weeks. harris made her final decision this morning. the democratic ticket now formed for this extraordinary election. just 90 days away. >> and already for the first time since that pick we are hearing from the trump campaign, saying just like kamala harris, tim walz is a dangerously liberal extremist.

the effort to try to define walz is now under way. harris and walz will hit the road first here in philadelphia. then they head to four other states over the course of the next several days to try to make their case to the american people. hoda, back to you. >> peter, thank you. another major story we're following, severe weather, debby is bringing relentless rain to the southeast this morning. after making land fall in florida as a category 1 hurricane. and it could create airport delays all across the country. al's got the forecast in just a moment. but first, nbc's maggie vespa joins us from charleston, south carolina. hey, maggie, good morning. >> reporter: hey, savannah, hoda, good morning. yeah, debby has arrived in charleston. for what it's worth, our crew had to scramble to find this live location because we already have several low-lying roads under water and also saw multiple confirmed tornadoes over night as debby marks day two now of this devastating run.

this morning, debby is churning up america's east coast. >> this is an animal that we don't think that we have seen before. so we must be very, very prepared. >> reporter: slamming georgia and south carolina with what forecasters warn could be a once in a 1,000 year rain event. overnight curfews in savannah and charleston with some areas bracing for up to 25 inches of rain over the coming days. >> if we get this amount of rain is that is forecasted, it will totally overwhelm all of our systems and literally will create islands within the city. >> reporter: holmes in charleston, already barricaded with sandbags and so-called tiger damns filled with water. >> wind is always scary and floods scary. >> reporter: this after the storm which began as a hurricane turned fatal on day one. in south georgia, authorities say a 19-year-old man was killed after a tree fell on his home. a similar story in florida. the sheriff saying this tree fell on a home outside gainesville, crushing a

13-year-old boy. in manatee county, frantic water rescues brought hundreds to higher ground. >> packed what we could in 15 minutes. waited for fire res due come. the house is destroyed. >> reporter: the storm stalling over the state, dropping nearly a foot of rain in some spots and leading close to 200,000 people without power across multiple states as millions more brace for debby's wrath. >> and it's feared and expected that debby will linger overhead here and dump rain for days. officials pleaded with people to have enough food and water to last them the week. hoda, savannah back to you. >> all right. maggie vespa there for us on the story. thank you. >> let's bring in al and get more on the storm and the massive amount of rain, where it's all headed next. al, what's on your plate? >> here is the deal, this thing will have a high impact all along the eastern sea board. 45 mile-per-hour winds. moving northeast. we have tornado watches now for

the carolinas right along the coast from charleston up to wilmington until 4 this afternoon. now, here is what's going to happen. this system will meanders out into the atlantic and then making a second land fall in south carolina just north of charleston, sometime probably around thursday afternoon, bringing anywhere from 7 to 20 inches of rain and then making its way up the eastern sea board through saturday on into sunday. already causing the northeast would have had very heavy rain earlier in the next 24 hours. so they've got a high risk a moderate risk of rain fall and flooding from new york to washington, also along the southeastern atlantic coast today. tomorrow, high risk from wilmington to charleston of flash flooding. but you see it extends up to norfolk. we move on into thursday. again, we are looking at the risk of flooding from new york all the way to jacksonville. but the heaviest flooding from raleigh to charleston. this is going to be a

high-impact storm that will last right into the weekend. in the meantime, there are a lot of jitters on wall street where the trading day just began following yesterday's global market meltdown, including the dow's worst day since 2022. this massive selloff sparked by concerns over the health of the u.s. economy and fears the federal reserve is behind in cutting those interest rates. nbc senior business correspondent christine romans has everything you need to know. christine, good morning. >> good morning, savannah. the worst day since 2022. but there's definitely a sigh of relief from wall street this morning in the first half hour of trading stocks here at home are starting to climb. they were back. the dow, the s&p 500 both already up. the dow up 350 points right now. for context, yesterday the dow closed down more than 1,000 points. the s&p 500 tumbling 3%. the nasdaq almost 3.5%. really tough day. so where did all the chaos come from? after months of setting record high after record high in stocks, markets picked up on

signals that the u.s. economy is starting to slow after so many years of strong growth. in focus, the rising jobless rate for four months in a row and job growth slowing again in july. this is a dramatic shift for almost two years the worry has been the economy is too strong and may overheat. that's why the federal reserve raised rates aggressively. the fear now is that the fed might be behind the curve. savannah? >> all right. thank you, christine. appreciate it. all right. let's bring craig in to that olympic news. >> bonjour. savannah, hoda. bonjour to you as well. it is, believe it or not, day 11 of these games. it's off to a golden start for team usa's surfing. this, as the stars of track & field step further into the spotlight following a dramatic final day of gymnastics. yet another medal for simone biles. more redemption for jordan chiles. and the thrilling conclusion for team that has kept us all entertained.

>> she did it, y'all. >> reporter: a road to redemption in paris, ending with one final medal for the most decorated american gymnast of all time, simone biles. the 27-year-old flying high for silver in the floor exercise. her 11th career olympic medal. greatness, recognizing greatness. getting a wow from tom brady in the crowd. but the drama of the day coming in the fight for bronze. jordan chiles, with an impressive beyonce-themed routine that landed her in fifth place. until -- >> they submitted an inquiry for jordan. >> team usa coaches appealed her score to the judges. for a skill that wasn't fully counted. and then the shocker. the 23-year-old's score is adjusted, landing her on the podium for her first individual olympic medal. >> this is beyond words.

i'm so proud of myself. >> reporter: the americans narrowly bested for gold by another fierce competitor, brazil's rebekah andrade. biles and chiles bowing down in admiration during the medals ceremony. the first time three black gymnasts had been on the same medal stand in olympic history. in the beam final, both biles and suni lee missing the podium after falls. but for simone, who ends her busy paris run with three golds and a silver, the comeback is now officially complete. >> i couldn't be more proud of my performances that i put on. in track & field, back-to-back golds in women's discus for american valley allman. noah lyles one step closer to the sprint double. he easily qualified for the 200 semis. and in the women's 200 -- >> down the home stretch. >> reporter: team usa's gabbie thomas flying through to the

at our top stories. this morning. taking a live look at the big board this morning where the dow jones industrial average is bouncing back slightly from three straight days of heavy losses. you can see it's now up about 435 points. it comes off the worst trading session that we've seen since 2022. as investor concerns grow about a slowdown in job growth over the past three sessions, the s&p lost 6%. leaders in daly city today are cutting the ribbon on a new development offering 56 affordable housing units specifically for teachers in the jefferson elementary school district. it is located on east moore avenue. the project was funded through a voter approved measure. right now, it's already at 90% capacity. all right. we're going to see temperatures in the 90s today above that. kari what are we looking at? it depends on your microclimate, because we are seeing a heat advisory that will be, in

to 11. that's the most of any american gymnast. we're so thrilled to have simone with us. hi, simone. u. >> hi. >> can i be totally honest? >> yes. >> i'm having a moment looking at you right now because i remember sitting with you in rio all those years ago. you were just a kid. we did not know how to pronounce your name. finally got it right. you are sitting here today 27 years old, the most decorated gymnast of all time. have you had a moment to reflect on what this means? >> not completely. and i don't think i will until one day i decide to retire. but yesterday, once we got back to the village, i looked at jordan and i just started bawling my eyes out. she was like, i knew it was going to happen. i just didn't know when. i think i was so full of emotion and i finally released all of that. i was so proud, happy, bittersweet that the journey is over. it is like, it's so crazy. it happened so quick.

you my third olympics. >> two things i want to ask you after that answer. both beautiful answers. number one, you are happy when you win a medal, gold, silver or whatever it happens to be. you were happier when jordan chiles, your compadre wins a bronze. to watch you leap in the air. why is that? >> she has worked so hard for that moment. we put those moves in in training. no matter what pressure you're under, they try to make us hit as many routines as possible like well done. just to see how excited jordan was and i knew that meant the world for her, i was so happy for her because it's been a long run and we have done this for so long together and competing again on an olympic stage is crazy. >> and watching you because the lessons you are teaching our girls, winning is beautiful and you have demonstrated that for years, but there is something else you are doing at these games that is so interesting and different. number one what you did with jordan.

number two, rebeca andrade and she won gold and you and jordan both bowed down and the louvre said hang this image. girl, that's amazing. that's amazing. you were sending a big message then, weren't you? >> yes. i think it is all about sportsmanship. we don't care whether we win or lose. we will always keep a good face and support our competitors because they worked just as hard as we have for that moment. you have to give them their flowers. that's exactly what me and jordan were doing. she had the best routine of that day and of the olympics. yeah, she deserved it. >> you said this was bittersweet. i thought about that because you have always been in love with gymnastics, and i feel like you fell back in love because you had a little moment in tokyo where i don't know -- you were saying i don't know if i'm going to come back. it is hard to say good-bye to something you love. >> yeah, absolutely. >> are we saying good-bye to something we love? >> you know, never say never. the next olympics is on home turf, so you just never know. >> wait. wait, wait, wait.

what did you just say? so there might be another. >> i'm just going to relax and see where life takes me, yeah. >> okay. so i noticed when you walked in you have a boot on your leg. we knew that you had like an injury, a calf injury that's been bugging. so tell me how we are today? >> right now it is precautionary. we're resting up as much as possible. we have tour in a couple weeks, so i'm just going to rest and heal. >> now, i had the good fortune of being with your mom during some of these olympics, your adorable husband. >> yeah. >> tell me about the experience for them. what was it like for them watching you? your husband hasn't done it before. this is his first go-around. >> right. >> first tell me what it was like for him. >> oh, my gosh. he was so excited. he was more excited to pin trade. he was loving the pin trading. i didn't think he would. i did warn him, pin trading is really huge. so he absolutely loved that. and obviously he loved going to see me compete. he was still keeping score. >> i saw him with the paper, yeah. >> for him, it was just -- it

meant the world to him because he has seen the amount of hours i put in. to actually see in person, he was like, wow, this is amazing. and he was just so excited to be there. >> and what about mom and dad and your home crew? >> it was really hard to find them in the crowd, but they were really excited. they missed tokyo, so this was like a cherry on top for them. paris is such a beautiful city and seeing all the girls compete in almost the exact same girls as in tokyo. they were ecstatic the whole entire time. >> self care has been your jam. i'm so proud of you saying -- saying the words, i don't want the twisties to come back. you are articulating the scary thing. you needed the self care to compete at your level. what did that entail? what did that mean on a daily basis? >> yes. it meant seeing my therapist pretty routinely. so, i saw her about three or four times throughout this whole entire process. it didn't matter if it was before all around or after qualifications. i went back to the village and i

got on a call with her and did my therapy sessions because that's routine for me now. >> what did that give you? >> it just gave me the confidence and really we do a lot of visualizations before meets. i just feel comfortable and confident enough to compete. but since it's part of my daily routine, we don't want to stop that just because i'm half way across the world. >> after you perform like you've performed and the crowd is quiet now. you're back in the olympic village. you've already had your phone conversations with your family. it's just you. you're about to put your head on the pillow after doing what you did, after these three golds and a silver medal. what do you say to yourself before you fall asleep? >> honestly, the days here have kind of taken me out. so before i go to bed, i'm just kind of wiped out. but last night, i was just kind of telling myself, don't sleep through my alarms because i have a big day ahead of me to do all the media. other than that, i sleep pretty well. i think once the emotion comes, it hits you and it hits you hard. but other than that, just
