"early today" starts right now. good morning. glad you're with me this morning. i'm frances rivera. the new democratic ticket for 2024 is set. vice president kamala harris made her first campaign appearance with her new running mate. minnesota governor tim walz. after rallying supporters in philadelphia last night, the two will make good use of walz's midwest roots and campaign today in wisconsin and michigan. nbc's peter alexander has more. >> reporter: the new democratic ticket is set. >> we are the underdogs in this race. but we have the momentum. >> reporter: vice president harris here in philadelphia for the first time, side by side with her newly-revealed moneying mate. minnesota governor tim walz. >> in 91 days.

[cheers and applause] the nation will know coach walz by another name. vice president of the united states! >> reporter: sources tell nbc news, harris had very strong chemistry with walz when they met on sunday, that played a key role in her decision. the campaign releasing their video of their phone call. >> listen. i want you to do this with me. let's, let's do this together. would you be my running mate and let's get this thing on the road? >> i would be honored, madam vice president. >> in minnesota, we respect our neighbors and the personal choices that they make. even if we wouldn't make the same choice for ourselves, there's a golden rule. mind your own damn business. >> reporter: harris sources say she zeroed in on walz pointing to his years as governor and congress. he's a national guard veteran that sources say appealed to the vice president. the harris campaign hoping the

midwest roots will help secure critical battlegrounds, namely, she picked him over josh shapiro, who some leading progressives had campaigned against, in part for his criticism of pro-palestinian protests. the race is now on to define walz. trump branding harris and walz, who's backed progressive policies as the most radical left duo in history. >> she will bend the knee to the most radical elements of her party. >> reporter: former speaker nancy pelosi is praising the pick. >> to characterize him as left is so unreal. he's right down the middle. >> our thanks to peter for that report. we have a new round of primary results this morning to show you. missouri congresswoman cori bush

killing of a top iranian general. hamas has chosen a new political leader after ismail haniyeh was assassinatedna iran last week. the group has selected yahya sinwar, believed to be an architect of the october 7 attack on israel. he has not been seen publicly since then. for the latest, let's go to matt bodner in london. do we know what this means for truce talks? >> reporter: frances, good morning. >> already the assassination of haniyeh complicated matters for these talks with something of a relatively moderate individual. and he was spearheading these negotiations for hamas u the mover rhamas. sinwar has remained in hiding since october 7. sinwar is seen as much more of a hard-liner in general. given his role in the october 7 attacks, his appointment as the political leader of hamas may

further slow down these negotiations. israeli forces have been looking for him, unable to find him in gaza. that said, they have neither confirmed nor denied assassinating haniyeh. this comes as the world braces for an expected large-scale retal retaliation for haniyeh's killing. but there's been diplomatic activity to prevent further escalation. jordan says its airspace can be used by neither side in whatever comes next. russia, a close ally of iran has gotten involved as well. reuters is reporting that president vladimir putin has passed a message to cameany as khamenei, asking him to avoid killing israeli civilians.

new this morning, four people are facing murder charges in the death of devonte' mitchell outside a milwaukee hotel. he was pinned down by employees in june. the milwaukee county district attorney saying the charges were filed based on extensive evidence and the autopsy report. arrest warrants have been issued for the four people involved. if convicted, they could each face over 15 years in prison. an actor from the hit show "billions" isfacing murder charges this morning. he was arrested in connection to a deadly shooting last month in houston. police say the 20-year-old victim was killed in the parking lot of an apartment complex. details around the incident still remain unclear. mcdowell is being held on $400,000 bond. tropical storm debby could bring historic rainfall and flooding to the southeast this week after slamming florida as a category 1 hurricane. the dangerous storm has killed at least six people. debby submerging coastal areas

of georgia and south carolina in floodwaters before moving offshore where it is expected to restrengthen. crews have performed multiple water rescues to residents stranded in homes and cars >cars. meanwhile, in florida, people remain without power. let's turn to meteorologist and climate reporter, chase cain on how climate change is fueling storms like debby. >> reporter: it's not just the wind. it's the water. climate change is amping up the part of tropical systems that causes nearly 90% of all deaths and the damage too. we've already seen plenty of the etche evidence with debby. >> i've seen tropical storms, but i've never seen it flood like this, never. >> reporter: widespread flooding from florida up the atlantic coast. that's in part because a warmer atmosphere holds more moisture,

specifically, 4% more moisture for every degree of warming. you think of the atmosphere, clouds, like a sponge holding moisture and ringing it out as rain. as we burn more fossil fuels and the hotter the atmosphere gets, that's like having an even bigger sponge holding even more moisture and dumping even heavier rainfall. and when scientists crunch the numbers on several soaking storms, they calculated that climate change helped hurricane florence dump 4% more rain, 7% during dorian, 10% during hurricane ian and 15% more from hurricane harvey, none of which bodes well for debby as it moves up the east coast. >> we know there is the potential for record rachlinfal here. but the waters are much more warmer in record levels because of human-caused climate change. when you have the excess evivel

high sea surface temperatures, deb de debby scooped that up. >> i'm meteorologist chase cain you. >> >> angie lassman is tracking the storm for us. and we know what's coming. it's already started at least here in new york, angie. the >> yeah, good morning, frances. we continue to see debby presenting impacts up and down the east coast over the next couple days. we've still got a tropical storm a although the center is offshore sitting to the south of charleston, south carolina. notice all the flood alerts that we've got. 16 million people in that. they've been seeing rounds and rounds of really heavy tropical rain. that's going to continue through the day today. debby eventually is going to make its way back to the coast. by the time we get to thursday, we'll be talking about a secondary landfall. between now and then, rain in the picture, and then it moves up the east coast bringing rain a little farther to the north.

welcome back. with some historic showings in the pool and the gym and team usa is making a name for itself on the track in the second week of the summer olympics. u.s. athletes earned two of their three gold medals tuesday in track events on the back of dominant performances and major upsets. the u.s. is solidifying its near-insurmountable lead in the medal count sitting at 86 total medals with five days of events left. tom llamas has the full recap from paris. >> reporter: gabby thomas delivered. smoking the field and winning the gold in the 200-meter sprint. >> it's gold for usa! >> i know i've earned it. i've trained so hard for this, but there is no feeling like winning an olympic gold medal. >> reporter: while, in a much longer race, the 1500, an upset by cole hawker who not only won gold but set an olympic record. >> cole locker wins gold!
