at six back to school students in the east bay returning to the classroom after voters ousted two board members for not allowing the pride flag to fly on campus. the possible impact has had on enrollment. plus, nearing one year since the devastating maui wildfires, the way one bay area animal shelter is helping months later to win the gold for the us. an amazing story. amit eller at age 20, gold medals a young wrestler from walnut creek making history in paris. we're going to introduce you to her. this is today in the bay. and good
6:02 am
morning to you on this wednesday, i'm marcus washington, and i'm laura garcia. we'll check your morning commute in just a moment. but let's look at the forecast, see what's in store for this wednesday morning. kari. still pretty hot today. yesterday was the peak of the heat, but today it only comes down a few degrees in some areas. and as we take a live look outside in san jose, it's another clear start. but it is at least nice and cool. and then as we take a look at our normal high temperature for this date, our average high and then what we're expecting santa rosa, well above average, reaching a high of 92 today, and we're ten degrees above average in concord. so yes, these temperatures are above where they should be, but not setting records. and in san francisco we're in the low 70s today, but upper 90s for livermore and san jose will be in the upper 80s. and we're only looking at minor changes over the next few days. eventually, things will cool back down, so we'll take a look at that in the full microclimate forecast coming up. mike, you've got a delay that just keeps building. yeah but hopefully now
6:03 am
it's going to start recovering. but there will be a ripple. so we're looking over here. westbound highway four chp just to let us know that a right around san marco, that crash involving two pickup trucks i believe are two larger vehicles. it did clear to the right shoulder. still a distraction right now, but lanes are clearing. that should mean some recovery. look at this. stack u. so willow pass road look likely seeing more traffic. we see those change a little bit. bailey back here. but really it's kirker pass road onto yerba buena issa ignacio valley road not yerba buena ignacio valley road. that will have a lot more traffic likely as folks try to avoid the backup. we already see another crash in walnut creek, and the timing does play out. this is the worst drive though. highway 4 to 680 to highway four, so avoid that and cut down if you can. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. well, in the east bay, students are going back to school for the first time. this is after two board members were ousted for not allowing the pride flag to fly on campus. well, today in the bay's bob redell joining us live from sunol. glenn school this morning. okay, so, bob, let's talk about this enrollment
6:04 am
there. i'm hearing that that is down this fall. are they saying is this related to that recall election? it's hard to say. i did speak with one mom who was pulling her three children from sunol glen here behind me, marcus, because she was not for the recall and she felt that the politics surrounding the recall was seeping into the classroom. i also spoke with the new superintendent, who's only been on the job for just around a month. she says enrollment has dropped over the past few years at many schools here in alameda county, but thinks the recall possibly contributed to a drop here at sunol. glenn again, it's hard to say. her message for the superintendents. she's very positive about the new school year, in spite of the hurt feelings among some parents i've spoken to. here are the numbers. you can see a 271 kids were enrolled at the beginning of the last school year. this fall. that number is 245. so that's a drop of about 9.5% according to my calculations. and that 245,
6:05 am
by the way, includes 24 students who withdrew for reasons unknown. the district would like to be at 280 students enrolled in june of 2023. the school flew a pride flag in celebration of pride month. there were complaints in september of last year, the sunol glenn school board approved by 2 to 1, a measure that only allowed the campus to fly the flag of the united states and or california effectively banning the pride flag. there was a contentious recall campaign that followed both sides accused the other of name calling this past july, voters ousted board members ryan jorgensen and linda hurley by 5,251%. supporters of those board members point out that they only lost by around 15 to 20 votes. clearly, not a mandate. both sides feel that they hold the, the high moral ground and, and nobody is willing to give. and when i say
6:06 am
nobody, i mean neither side. and so, i don't think it's over, so to speak, what the what the next play is, i, i don't know, everyone still has a place here in sunol, and we all like that. we disagree. if we all agreed, it might be, you know, kind of a very strange situation where we weren't taking any other points of view into consideration. and that's not what anyone's aiming to do. and whether they are for the recall or against it, it that doesn't matter. my job is to support their students academically, socially, emotionally and behaviorally so that they're successful here and at sunol glenn. i did speak by phone with one of the ousted board members, ryan jorgensen. he says this recall was quite divisive, thinks the kids behaved better than the adults during this. it feels like the other side that voted him out preaches tolerance, but doesn't practice it when it comes to other people's views. he says he supports the sunol glenn that is
6:07 am
inclusive to all students, regardless of background and by the way, he is not pulling his kids, his four children will be attending sunol glenn again this fall as classes resume later this morning. as for the two vacant seats on the board, the alameda county board of education has appointed two new board members their temporary to serve until there's an election or official appointment. reporting live here in sunol bob redell today in the bay. thank you bob. it is 606 right now and new at six. tomorrow marks one year since the maui firestorm that took the lives of 102 people. the fire devastated the lahaina area. in most cases, rebuilding is only just getting started. relief efforts are still underway as well, at least when it comes to 50 cats and kittens, which recently arrived at the silicon valley humane society. they were transported from two maui shelters, allowing more room for other animals displaced in the firestorm. the humane society, silicon valley
6:08 am
also helped fund that transport effort and is now seeking donations, along with offering those cats up for adoption. you can learn more at the shelter's website. hsv dot org. 607 for you, this morning and we are tracking a big victory for the bay area and team usa. want to give you a live look this morning over at the eiffel tower. so an east bay olympian bringing back gold to the east bay today in the bay's jessica aguirre went one on one with amit eller as her big win in the city of light is really making olympic history. okay, as promised, guys here that bay area medal headed back to walnut creek with me. the historic amit eller. you were just sensational. how does it feel to have that medal around your neck? it feels incredible. you know, it's a lot heavier than it looks. and it's just the most beautiful thing i've ever seen, and i, i honestly, when i was younger, i would get medals and
6:09 am
i would immediately take them off. but this is the one medal that i never want to take off. okay. and when she says younger, remember she's 20 years old. okay. so when she was younger, has it sunk in? you know, you are 20 years old. your first olympics and now you made history as the first wrestler, us wrestler to win a gold medal. male or female? that is a huge mantel. youngest. youngest? yes i don't think it sucked in. i don't think it sunk in yet, i constantly need to tell myself you are an olympic champion, and i just keep having these moments that i'm, like, looking at myself in the mirror and i'm like, you are an olympic champion. and i'm like, no, wha? no. that that happened really? so it's going to take me a while. but you know, for me, i treated it as any other competition. and the truth is that's what it is. but you know, i wrestled against the best people in the world, and i came out on top. it was so exciting
6:10 am
last night when you won to see your family, how meaningful was it to have them there? and i know that this is particularly meaningful for you because it's been a difficult journey for you. it seems. you know, you've had two tragedies in your life. both of them have happened when you've been away. you know, wrestling that must be difficult to overcome and yet glorious that you were able to bring this home in memory of your father and your brother. yeah i mean, it was extremely meaningful to have them there. oftentimes it's just me and my mom, which is pretty amazing. a lot of the athletes i know always compete by themselves, but to have them all there, i think honestly, the best moment of the night wasn't wasn't being there on the podium, receiving my medal. it was when i was finally able to cross that barrier and go and hug them all. and just like that's when i truly felt it. i just we all started crying and it was we truly, we truly felt it. and i felt like, you know, the team behind the team, it's, you see athletes out there winning, but it's so much more than that. you never realize it.
6:11 am
yeah, yeah. all the sacrifices that they make. and i know you started wrestling at four after seeing your brothers. is that true? yeah. that's true. what was it about wrestling that just attracted you? you know, it just felt like a calling for me. it just looked so fun, and i could not stand sitting on the bleachers and watching it from the sideline. it was like killing me. i had this urge to hop on the mat and wrestle, and i think having three older brothers, being the youngest of six, i just i was always physical, you know, like we were always playing and messing around and so wrestling was just natural for me. like, it just felt natural. it was so fun and it made me feel. it made me feel happy and confident and i just really enjoyed it. all right. last last night you said to me, you were you couldn't have done this if it wasn't for the bay area. your bay area supporters were right there. shout out to the bay area. tell them you're bringing that medal back. hey, guys, i'm bringing this olympic gold medal back. bay area born and raised. yeah thank you again, guys. fabulous bay area. proud for sure. wow. that's great. all right well the
6:12 am
olympic coverage continues for you. it is high flying action in prime time tonight. hurdlers are set to take to the track multiple semifinal events plus men's springboard diving. that's going to take place over in paris tonight. and the medals are on the line for women pole vaulters. you can catch everything beginning at 8:00 right here on nbc bay area. it was amazing. she was so sweet and kind of soft spoken. but then she's a wrestler, you know? so the video, she walked out like, don't you mess with me tough. i love it though. she was a good combo. gold medal back there. very congratulations to her. it's nice to see all these bay area athletes. is amazing. and a lot of stanford, you know students. so that's been really amazing to see. we still have time to catch a flight to catch some more of the events in the closing ceremony. will that be nice? she clear that with the boss? i know i'm like, you got something to tell us? i still need to work that part out. okay, but here's a look at our forecast for paris, which is nine hours ahead. and as we go
6:13 am
into the rest of the afternoon there, it's going to be sunny and in the mid to upper 70s. so really nice weather there. more clouds moving in this evening as lows drop to the mid 60s. but we are going to see things heating up and the heat will be what we're talking about as we head closer to the closing ceremony. they're expecting those highs to reach back into the 90s, so we'll be following that. and i'll have a look at our microclimate forecast coming up in a few minutes. all right. thanks, gary. well, even the most diehard burners will tell you they have no desire to see a repeat of last year. remember the muddy mess at burning man? well, coming up next on today in the bay, the big changes on tap and a first of its kind change that's actually never been offered before. i got to tell you, that does not look like fun at all. all right, a strange suit, a strange lawsuit to tell you about. let's go out to the futures. you remember how we started this week? holy cow. was terrible. but now we're getting back to where we need to be.
6:14 am
hey, scott, did you hear about this bay area? getting the new in and out? yeah, well, we're going to tell you where it is right after the break. get in line a long line. all right? and don't forget, look at the medal count for you right here from the paris olympics. stick around. much more ahead this morning here on today in the bay. maybe

and it's really surprising. he's just so vocal. it's like he doesn't hear himself. well, yeah. you know, i think most people couldn't tell you who the president of gm is the ceo of g, nor what her political positions are. they just want to sell you a car, right? yeah. but he, he doesn't likes he likes to be in the center. yeah. all right. thanks, scott 618 for you this morning. new at six. well, you know, it sounds like last year's nightmarish burning man festival, leading to an unexpected hangover. so usually the event sold out months ahead of time, pretty much right after they first go on sale. but all of that mud in the rear view well appears to be slowing down the ticket sales. this time around. in fact, just three weeks to go a new round of tickets are being offered. yeah, that start at $630. galoshes not included here. burning man starts on august 25th. also new

kind of audience and this kind of interest, it's only going to allow a new generation to get into it at a with a lot of resources and a lot of support. and i just feel like this is the key to international growth. in a recent exclusive interview with people magazine, he said he had no plans to unretire to face off with athletes in paris, citing that competing at 60 would not bode well, which is hard to believe that tony hawk is 60. i know it's kind of interesting there. 60. we were talking to mary lou, our production assistant. mary lou. what did you say? 11 years old. she's one of the. yeah, well, we were talking about 11 year old and a 60 year old compete. oh yeah. the olympian. yeah. that would be interesting to see. wow. it's only five decades. it's a little harder to bounce back because of time. yeah. bones don't heal like they used to. all right. let's get a look at that forecast for us heading outside to skateboard or anything you want to do out there. it's going to be a warm one. yeah. you probably want to go out early today in much of

the bay area. we're going to still have a hot afternoon, but we're starting out nice and cool now with 65 in san jose, 60 in walnut creek. and we are seeing a great start to our school year in castro valley. it's all clear there. temperatures in the low 60s at drop off time and then at pick up time we're going to see some upper 70s. so you'll want to go outside and play and enjoy the first day of school. hopefully it's a great one. let's get a look at our high temperatures, what we're expecting versus what's average for this date. and in santa rosa we are well above average not setting records, but we're up to 92 today and 98 degrees in concord. normally we're in the upper 80s. so if you think, man, this has been such a hot summer, you are right. because even today we're looking at 10 degrees temperatures above what's normal for this afternoon. and on this date, as we take a look at the south bay, there is still range in temperatures from upper 80s in milpitas to mid 90s in morgan hill. and upper 90s for much of
6:23 am
the east bay, livermore reaching 98 degrees 90 in martinez and 82 today in hayward. but along the coast it's still nice and cool, with some mid 60s there, and redwood city will be much warmer with a high of 83 degrees and some low 70s in san francisco. but most of the city, at least for the western side. it's going to be in the upper 60s today, and 90 in novato, clear lake 103 and 93 in napa. as we go through the next several days, temperatures come down just a little bit. we're looking at some low 90s, and then early next week we'll be in the mid 80s. so eventually we'll work our way towards some cooler temperatures. while san francisco will see highs in the upper 60s through at least next tuesday. and mike, you're tracking that big delay coming through concord. yeah. look at this travel time right now. highway four is just jammed solid. it's not antioch. it's as you get toward pittsburgh and then in through concord really jammed up. and this is going to ripple out through much of contra costa county. if it
6:24 am
doesn't start to improve really quickly. look, kirker pass road to yvr, definitely a better route. what we're talking about folks, is as you travel out of antioch, this area westbound highway four really bears a lot of the traffic flow. folks get over to 242 and to 680. some folks will cut through down these roads here, including kirker pass and you see the slowing already here. and that is a concern that it's going to ripple back from this earlier crash. it is improving a little bit right now towards san marco, but it's a tough drive for highway four. back to you. thanks, mike. it is 623 right now. so it turns out who you choose as a best friend in high school could impact your health in the future. this map shows the schools central nervous system, the cafeteria. you got your cool asians, burnouts, jocks, the greatest people you will ever meet, and the worst a head on today in the bay. the all new study revealing the impacts, friendships have on you later in life. we'll be right back one case,

the controversy surrounding her ongoing grand jury investigation to the growing crime rate in that city, her response to the criticism ahead and running for gold, a surprise winner for team usa. plus, it may be summer, but figure skating from the 2022 winter olympics set to receive a long awaited medal in paris. we're there live ahead of all of the action today. this is today in the bay. good morning to you on this wednesday i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. thanks for joining us on this wednesday morning. it's 631. let's see if things are going to heat up today, checking in with meteorologist kari hall. and it will happen quickly. again, we're back to some of the same temperatures we saw yesterday. a few spots may come down a degree or two, but it's still going to be hot this afternoon. so as we're taking a look at the way we're starting this morning, it's nice and cool in parts of the north bay with upper 40s low
6:33 am
50s, but we are already in the mid 60s in san jose and it's 79 in los gatos. so you can see there's a big range in our temperatures and that continues today. we're in the mid 60s near the coast, san francisco today, 7177 for a high in oakland and will be in the mid 80s in fremont. while we'll see some upper 90s in the tri valley and mid 90s for the south bay. so we'll be tracking that and a slight cooldown that's coming up in a few minutes. all right kerry, thank you. well a chilling story to tell you about this morning as a family prepares to send their children back to school. well, a child hit and killed by a truck in san jose. this was while riding a scooter today in the bay's kris sanchez. live for us this morning with what we know so far. chris, just a tragic story here. it is a really tragic story. it's a really tragic reminder to that. we all need to do our part to make our roadways safer. this is the intersection near where that child was hit and killed. it is in the cambridge neighborhood and around 40 in the 430 in the
6:34 am
afternoon. when this crash happened. it's a pretty busy place. the speed limit about 40mph. now. overnight people were dropping off candles and flowers here. we don't yet know who that boy was at this point, but we do know that people are feeling this tragedy. we are talking about camden avenue near lee, and it appears that the boy was on a scooter in a crosswalk when he was hit by a driver in a truck. san jose police tell us the driver is cooperating with the investigation now. witnesses were also able to tell police what they saw as well. my son came home and he just said there was an act. some little kid got hit down there by the crosswalk right there. that was on a scooter, and he was in the street and he wasn't moving. while people in the area told us that they have seen quite a few crashes here, including one about a mile away three weeks ago, in which a bicyclist was hit and killed by a vehicle.
6:35 am
this child is the victim of the 30th deadly crash in the city ou likely know, the city of san jose has a vision zero program. reduce or eliminate pedestrian and bicycle fatalities in the city, and there are several roadways that are subject were subject to improvements. hillsdale down the street and also lee but not this section. and there are none of those improvements right here where we are this morning in san jose. kris sanchez today in the bay. just a warning for everyone to please watch out when you're crossing the street. all right, chris, thank you. well public safety was front and center at many night out events across the bay area. the national events giving people a chance to try to build stronger relationships with law enforcement and first responders in oakland, however, neighbors expressed concerns about public safety and the tug of war between oakland police and the mayor's office. the police officers union is now pushing for mayor sheng thao to resign. they sent her a letter
6:36 am
demanding she step down by tomorrow. for two years, almost two years, we've been waiting and we see this shift is not steering in the right direction. the mayor calls the letter a distraction. she says crime is down more than 30%. numbers. the union disputes. i spoke one on one with the mayor yesterday and asked her about the recent controversies inside the mayor's office. with that ongoing grand jury investigation, including the recent fbi raid of her home. here's some of what she had to say. i am not the target of any investigation. i am innocent, and at the end of the day, it's unfortunate because this do look like you know, there is being weight put on the scale, especially during a recall election. we know that this happened to hillary clinton with her emails when she was going up against trump, and that cost her her race. so i would hope that oaklanders understand that only one person is funding this recall, and this person does not live in oakland yet he lives in
6:37 am
piedmont. and so we should all be asking, why is it that we are allowing one person to take away our democracy? i spoke to the mayor about a multitude of topics including crime fighting efforts, the homeless crisis and more. we'll air more of my interview with the mayor during our 8 a.m. streaming newscast. we'll also post a link to the entire interview on our home page. 24 hours ago, many americans had no idea who minnesota governor tim walz was. now, scott mcgrew seems like every other post on social media has that hashtag dad energy, dad energy, right? a lot of them are pretty funny, and there's a lot of enthusiasm, of course, from democrats. walz and his new boss, kamala harris, walked into an absolutely stuffed stadium in philadelphia last night. now, keep in mind it's only been 17 days since joe biden bowed out of the race. 17 days, 400 hours ago, and the race is completely,
6:38 am
absolutely changed. 17 days ago, nobody knew the democrats would be looking for a vice presidential candidate. 24 hours ago, tim walz didn't know it'd be him. like all regular people i grew up with in the heartland, jd studied at yale, had his career funded by silicon valley billionaires, and then wrote a best seller trashing that community. come on, that's not what middle america is. and i got to tell you, i can't wait to debate the guy. while speaking about his opponent, jd vance, he went on to make a not so sly or subtle reference to an internet meme about vance. now, that thing about vance is not true. the crowd found it funny, but the harris campaign has been battling falsehoods against them, both on the internet and from donald trump. but now his repeated one about the opposition. here's vance. the
6:39 am
biggest problem with the tim waltz pick. it's not tim waltz himself. it's what it says about kamala harris that when given an opportunity, she will bend the knee to the most radical elements of her party. that's exactly what she did here. that's what she's going to keep on doing as president. meantime, we mentioned social media users are finding a treasure trove of old walls videos, including this one where he explains how to replace the headlamp in a ford edge suv, but also reminds people to vote in a minnesota election, which is what the video was supposed to be about. walls, by the way, says you can get a new headlamp at napa for 7.99. you do need to use shrink wrap connectors, he says to put it back in, but he says it'll take markets like five minutes. okay, well, i've got five minutes. let's check it out. all right. thanks, scott. 639 right now in some parts of the central valley, cleaning up. this is after that moderate quake last night. it had a 5.2 magnitude, was centered about 20 miles outside of bakersfield. hit a little after nine last night. a
6:40 am
