judging criteria that define this sport. >> reporter: making its debut at the paris games this summer as an olympic sport, breaking, aka break dancing. if you're like me, when i first heard about it, you're probably wondering right nouhou do you keep score in break dancing? so why don't we break down breaking. where did breaking come from? it's about a half century old. started in the 1970s in the south bronx, took off like wildfire from there. professional competitions and street battles, and now breaking is on the biggest stage of them all in the olympics. 16 men and 16 women, they're called b-boys and b-girls, are going to compete for the first-ever medals in olympic breaking. breaking competitions are known as battles. they're one on one. each breaker trying to score points with the judges. and they go best of three. in the battles, the breakers
4:43 am
take turns. when one of them finishes their routine, the opponent immediately begins theirs. in each of these individual rounds within the battles is called a throwdown. each one lasts one minute. one skill of paramount importance here is improvisation, because this isn't like figure skating or gymnastics. these breakers do not know ahead of time what music they're going to be dancing to. all right, how the competition works, on both the men's and women's side, 16 breakers have qualified to compete at the games. those 16 are going to be split into four groups. this is round robin style. that means that each of breaker is going to have a battle with the other three breakers in their group. top two from each group, when all of that is over, will advance to the knockout stage. and here, it's one battle at a time. you either win and advance or you go home. so you have eight, which quickly becomes four, which quickly becomes two. and, in that final battle, the ultimate battle, the winner
4:44 am
takes home the gold. there is countless moves that these breakers can make, but all of those moves can basically be grouped into four main elements. this is called top rock. then you've got down rock. check this one out. power moves. finally, you've got breezes. top rock refers to the moves that breakers do while they're standing. most breaking rounds stop in top rock where breakers establish their personality and charisma. down rock is the part of breaking that's performed on the floor using hands and feet. power moves are the bigger, flashier moves that are more technically difficult to pull off. things like windmills and spins. freezes involve performing a total stop, in difficult-to-hold positions. this is often used as a punctuation after fast movement. of the key to victory in breaking is be able to perform a variety of moves from all four of these elements.
4:45 am
there are judges in breaking. and the judges are assigning scores to each breaker in five distinct categories. each one of these categories is weighted equally. you've got technique. you've got vocabulary, you've got execution, musicality and the fifth one, originality. five categories. each 20% of the breaker's final score. when you look at this, they've got an ipad with this, the five categories here, and they've got a slider for each one of those categories, and there's an overall slider that combines them all at the top. let me show you how this works. as the competition is unfolding, the judges that slider around. is breaker one doing better on originality. you take the balance of that, and it's reflected up here. in this judge's scoring, breaker two beats breaker one. there it is. that's how breaking works at the
