extinguished. the games of the xxxiii olympiad came to an end in paris on sunday in this spectacular closing ceremony. katie ledecky and nick meade carried the flag into staud dee france for a triumphant usa. it was none other than tom cruise who stole the show, in this epic journey to bring the olympic flag to the next host city which is los angeles. after two weeks of competition the u.s. stood alone at the top of the medal count, take a look here, team usa earned 126 medals and tied china for golds. each nation winning 40 golds each. earlier sunday the u.s. women's basketball team found itself in a tight battle with host nation france for that final gold medal in a game that was ultimately decided in the final second. >> no time-outs here. johannes up ahead, it's

williams, that was a two. banked it in. a two ball. and the united states is going to claim gold for the eighth consecutive olympics! >> so france was unable to force overtime with that shot at the buzzer. team usa maintains their unprecedented olympics streak in dramatic fashion, taking home their eighth consecutive gold medal. although the games may be over the chatter over one huge olympic decision isn't going away just yet. nbc's marissa parra has more. >> reporter: u.s. gymnast jordan chiles is facing orders to return her bronze medal. but usa gymnastics not going down without a fight. backing chiles, this he reveal they've submitted video evidence in their appeal. it comes after this controversial decision by the international olympic committee to reallocate the bronze win to romania. since posting her heartbreak chiles has gone quiet, but the romanian speaking out posting,

getting ready to join elon musk for a conversation that will stream live on x tonight. musk says that entertainment is guaranteed. jessica? >> meanwhile, it's 2024 and the word weird is trending. chris, thank you. the israeli military has ordered new evacuations in gaza ahead of an expected renewed assault. thousands of palestinians are being sent out to areas previously declared to be humanitarian zones. the idf said rockets had been fired from those areas, it comes as ceasefire negotiations are entering a new critical stage. for more on this let's go to nbc's claudio lavanga who is following these new developments. good morning. what is the latest on that possible ceasefire chatter? >> reporter: good morning, jessica. negotiators or mediators from the united states, qatar and egypt have called for both israel and hamas to come to the table for the next round of negotiations, which are scheduled to take place in cairo on thursday, but while israel

has confirmed it will send its own negotiators the same cannot be said for hamas. their presence is not confirmed, especially after -- or sure, especially after a statement they issued on sunday, yesterday, in which they said that they would urge the mediators to present a plan that is based on a previous proposal because they say that any new round of negotiations or any new plan will offer, and i quote, cover or provide cover for israel's aggression. now that -- the plan they are talking about is the one presented by president biden at the beginning of july in which the first phase will see a partial withdraw of israeli troops from gaza in populated areas of gaza and then the release of women, sick and elderly hostages in exchange of -- or in exchange of palestinian prisoners. now, on the war front, instead, gaza is still reeling from the

air strike that hit a school in gaza that has killed at least according to the palestinian authorities at least 100 people and injuring dozens more. now, the palestinians are saying that most if not all the victims are civilians who were finding or looking for refuge or shelter in the school. while the idf says that they hit that school because it was hiding -- or it was being used as a compound or a military compound or a command center for hamas, even though they haven't provided any evidence of that claim. jessica. >> claudio, thank you. meanwhile, ukraine has taken the fight to russia. for the first time its forces are now fighting inside russian territory. local russian officials are calling for evacuations from the areas that are under assault. russian media says up to 1,000 ukrainian troops are inside russia. moscow is now bombing its own land to try to stop that offensive. the unprecedented assault began on tuesday as ukrainian troops entered the kursk region. russian president vladimir putin calls it a major provocation.

public transportation to get to the games. >> reporter: the 2028 committee is aiming for the country's most climate conscious olympics. >> what people are going to see is a really different city than maybe what they are expecting. >> reporter: plans are still in the works, but organizers say part of the deal is making l.a.'s already preexisting olympic venues only accessible by public transportation. to pull it off, the county is borrowing nearly 3,000 bus toss drive an estimated 1 million more trips a day, including venues spanning as far as 85 miles across the region and asking people to keep the roads clear by working from home. local transportation officials say that would cost the l.a. metro system at least a billion dollars and it's not clear who would foot the bill. safe to say many angeline knows are a little bit skeptical. >> i don't think it's possible. >> i would opt to leave town before i would take public transportation. >> reporter: transportation professor jim moore says it's a bridge too far for a city that doesn't rely on public transportation and safety is a big sticking point.
