10,000 athletes on parade. bringing the paris games to a close.s celebrating. and as the flag was passed to the olympic flame officially extension ting wished. as the flag was passed to los angeles, this stunning moment straight out of hollywood. film star tom cruise jumping from the top of the stade de france and then jumping on a motorcycle headed to l.a. using a little movie magic to add olympic rings to the famous hollywood sign. carrying the flag for team usa o during the closing ceremonies, katie ledecky and rower louis mead. but for usa gymnastics, battling a decision to take away her bronze medal over the timing of an appeal. team usa sweeping more medals on friday, saturday and sunday. >> sha'carri richardson! >> sha'carri richardson staring down opponents in the 100 meter

relay. wild celebrations followed. in the 4ly 400, the u.s. men and women taking gold. and in the basketball, after the u.s. men took a fifth straight olympic gold against the home team, france, the american women did the same, earning their eight consecutive gold. now, the next summer games head to l.a. in 2028. the french president with this advice to los angeles in an exclusive interview with nbc news. >> i would say be yourself. listen to this in los angeles. diversity is key. never stop. you will make it. ♪ >> the closing ceremony wrapping up with performances from venice beach, including the red hot chili peppers, billie eilish and, of course, snoop dogg. as well as a quick look at the

final medal count. team usa and china tied with 40 gold medals apiece. but the u.s. far surpassing any other country with 126 overall medals at these olympic games. france the host in third and fourth place on the table there. >> everyone has to root for their flag. thank you so much. a very successful olympics. we'll have more on this medal controversy and the push to l.a. 2028 in our next half hour. right now, let's turn to tensions once again escalating in the middle east. israel ordering more evacuations in southern gaza after launching a deadly airstrike on a school turned shelter over the weekend. this as israel and the u.s. make new moves in the region tied to retaliatory strike from iran. chief foreign correspondent rhode ichard ankle is in tel av. good morning, richard. >> reporter: good morning. the mood here in tel aviv remains calm, even as the

israeli government is warning people to be prepared with analysts suggesting that that military response from iran and hezbollah could come tonight. hezbollah this morning fired dozens of rockets into northern israel. israel does not think that this is the retaliation for its assassinations two weeks ago of a top commander in beirut and a hamas leader visiting iran. but it maybe a warm-up. israel is bracing for coordinated strikes, possibly missiles and drones from iran, hezbollah and other of its allies across the middle east. israeli blood banks are preparing. hospitals moving patients into basements. shelters getting ready. the pentagon announced overnight it's moving a u.s. submarine to the region to join the extra american warships and fighter jets already rushed here. all of this while israel's

ongoing war in gaza launched after hamas' october massacre is not close sloeing down. hamas is still holding around 115 hostages. this weekend israel bombed school in gaza city being used as a shelter. local officials say at least 100 people were killed. israel says at least 19 militants were hiding there. vice president harris condemning the civilian deaths. >> israel has a strright to go after the terrorists that are hamas. but as i have said many times, they also have, i believe, an important responsibility to avoid civilian casualties. >> reporter: more than 2.2 million people live in gaza, penned in by israel's blockade of the area. the u.n. says nearly two-thirds of the are spread ing.

they have found traces of pole owe. israel has also ordered more evacuations in gaza, usually a tray lewd to new military action telling gazans to leave a designated humanitarian area. this family is moving. the youngest daughter just 7 months old has moved 7 times. >> translator: what is the sin of this young baby? she should grow up with flowers and colors, not bombs. >> reporter: amid the war, there is also diplomacy with the biden administration pushing what it's describing as last-ditch cease-fire and hostage negotiations this week. >> richard ankle in tel aviv, thank you. we move to the race to the white house. kamala harris spent the weekend campaigning and fundraising and looking ahead to next week's democratic convention.

in the meantime, new polls show her inching ahead of donald trump in several key swing state states. the trump campaign says it has been hacked. we have complete coverage. we'll start with garrett haake. good morning. >> good morning. this race has changed dra dramatically in the month between the two party convention. the democratic ticket is riding a wave of new enthusiasm with crowds of thousands building a surge that is starting to show up in the battleground polls. the convention just one week away, vice president kamala harris and governor tim walz wrapping up a week-long battleground blitz rallying a fired-up crowd of 12,000 supporters in las vegas saturday. >> we know this will be a tight race until the very end. so let's not pay too much attention to the polls. >> reporter: both online and at rallies, former president trump has repeatedly accused harris of

lying about the size of her crowds. >> they said, oh, she had a big crowd. >> reporter: the harris campaign poking back on social media with a photo of one large crowd writing, trump has still not campaigned in a swing state in over a week. low energy? the former president also pushing a baseless conspiracy theory about president biden. >> i hear he's going to make a comeback at the democrat convention. he's going to walk into the room and he's going to say, i want my presidency back. >> reporter: new polling shows harris leading trump among likely voters in three king key swing states, all within the margin of error. over the weekend the trump campaign said it was hacked by an iranian group in june and that documents were, quote, obtained illegally from foreign sources the statement came after politico said it was sent trump campaign documents from an anonymous e-mail account. nbc news has not independently verified the hack. vance is trying to walk back trump's recent comments on

abortion suggesting he's open to banning access to a commonly used abortion pill. >> would you direct your fda to revoke access the drug? >> you could do things that would supplement, absolutely. there's things that are open and humane. >> reporter: the former president believes that decision should be left up to the states. >> you would make sure any medicine is safe and prescribed in the right way, but the president wants individual states to make these decisions. >> trump is also accusing the vice president of stealing one of his new policy proposals after she endorsed eliminating the federal tax on tips. it's a potent issue in nevada. trump had back ed the same poliy two months ago. a rare moment of agreement between two campaigns who agree on almost nothing else. >> garrett, thank you. we want to get more on the state of the race from washington correspondent hallie jackson. good morning. so they finished off the battleground tour, the first

rollout of harris/walz. give us the state of the race. >> on the democratic side, the harris/walz team is feeling like they have some wind at their back moving forward for a couple reasons. the new battleground poll ing w talked about showing she's inching ahead within the margin of error in some of the key swing states. when you look at independents, those numbers are interesting. there's good news for democrats showing vice president harris is doing better than president biden with independents in some of those critical swing states. you also have the money factor, the harris camp raked in tens of millions of dollars in a short period of time. and look ahead at what's happening aweek from today. the democratic national convention begins in chicago. that is a week of prime time coverage for the democrats. we're learning more about who some of the headliners will be. two sources tell us former president obama will speak along with former president bill clinton, form secretary of state hillary clinton and president biden will be a headliner as well.

in what seems like a nod to his leadership in a new interview recently, his first since he decided to step off the ticket, he says he did so part ly not t be a distraction for democrats. >> let's talk about the trump campaign, still adjusting to the new race and the new candidate they are facing at the top of the ticket. >> there's a sense from senior advisers that this is a so-called harris honeymoon that may not last all that long. they see the fundamentals as being consistent. that's a real focus on two big issues. the issues we have been talking about for months now that voters care about. the economy and immigration. on both of those issue, battleground polls show that former president trump actually polls better than vice president harris on that. there's a desire, i think, from those i talked to in the trump orbit, for the former president to focus on that, focus on policy. what we have seen from him over the course of the last week, several weeks, if not longer, has been a focus on nearly anything but. he's been litigating the issue of crowd sizes, making false

protesters involved in the april shutdown of the golden gate bridge are expected to surrender to authorities. it follows a weekend announcement by district attorney brooke jenkins. eight people have been charged with one felony count of conspiracy, while 18 have been charged with misdemeanor conspiracy. all are facing 38 counts of false imprisonment among other charges. a rally and press conference are scheduled in support of the protesters today. happening today, the long promised downgrade to the trauma center at san jose's regional medical center, the operators, hca healthcare, originally planned to close it completely, but in a compromise reached last month, it agreed to downgrade it to a category three trauma center. one hospital spokesperson says it will continue to provide emergency services for all patients, but critics argue the trauma services will now be to the scale of some rural hospitals, and the closest level one trauma center will now be miles away at valley medical. let's get a look

this morning new questions over the bomb shell ruling to strip star jordan chiles of her olympic medal. >> jordan chiles for the bronze medal. >> the u.s. appeal ing the decision citing critical errors in the process and usa gymnastics saying new evidence that certifices heroine. the controversy began after chiles' coach challenged her score in the floor routine and got her bumped from 5th to 3rd place replacing romania and leading to a split-screen of emotions. >> took the shot and it paid off. >> chiles celebrating her first individual event medal here on "today." >> everybody was crying. those were true emotions. >> reporter: but days later, the court of arbitration ruled her coach's inquiry came 4 seconds too late after the 1-minute deadline for appeals. chiles' lower score was reinstated. her fans outraged. >> 4 seconds. >> i'm mad.

media for my mental health. >> as part of the romania's repeal, they asked that jordan chiles be allowed to keep her medal while also awarding one to her athlete. you can imagine the emotional roller coaster for all the athletes involved. >> it's just a crazy scenario. we're going to be joined by six-time olympic medalist aly raisman. we just had jordan on our show a few days ago. she bronze brought the bronze medal. she was so proud of it. you have been in that situation. what did you think when you saw what happened with jordan? >> first of all, thank you so much for having me. this is just so heartbreaking. i'm just so gutted. i can't even imagine what this past week has been like for jor and the other ath the leaths involved. this is completely devastating. i don't think people realize these gymnasts work their entire

lives for this moment. and it's supposed to be one of your favorite moments. i think it's so unfair. it's so cruel. and i don't think that jordan should have to give her medal back. the ioc has given more than one medal before, and i think they should do this now. >> first of all, you know exactly how this feels. but this is just insane to me. the reason she was in 5th place initially is not because she didn't do the routine well. it's because the judges made an error. let's start there. which is the poor romanian gymnast had 3rd place taken from her. now they are saying you didn't appeal it fast enough. other gymnasts in the rotation potentially have more than a minute to appeal. it's only because of her placement at the end that she had that one minute. they are saying it's 4 seconds. so this reversing and taking back the bronze medal has nothing to do with how jordan performed. do i have that right? >> yeah, that's correct. the judges are human.

we all mic mistakes. what's so devastating is this is the biggest moment of their lives. these gymnasts work hard. they play fair. the sportsmanship at this olympic games has been so spectacular. they have done everything right. they put the inquiry in. the judges accepted it, which means they felt it was under scrutiny. it's just unfair. i can't believe we're in this position. we trust that the rules are in place that there's been a lot of thought behind it in that the rules are there to be fair. i think there needs to be more transparency in going forward. we need to understand how this is happening and how to ensure this doesn't happen again. it's appalling, but i think the organizations that are in charge of this need to really look at the athlete's mental health and how much this is affecting them and how cruel it is to take a

medal away from someone. >> really quickly. i know you have had a conversation with jordan. who is she handling all this? >> i have known jordan for a long time. i'm so proud of who she is. i have loved watching her during this olympic games and the way that she has just don so much. people love her and support her for good reason. she's an incredible person. i want to keep what she said to me private, but i can't even imagine how much she's going through and how hard this is. she even said she's taking a break from social media. there's been horrific bullying. i just feel for her. my heart is going out to her. i support her fully. i'm so sad and disappointed that this is happening. it's just unfair. >> aly, thank you so much. that picture, that image of
