rivera. the middle east is a powder keg this morning, as a bloody war in gaza rages on. israel is also preparing for attacks on both iran and hezbollah. both have promised retaliation after two high-profile assassinations blamed on israel. the u.s. has promised to back israel in the event of any escalation and is rushing naval reenforcements to the region. for the latest, let's turn to claudio lavanga. bring us up to date on the latest. >> reporter: good morning, frances. that's right. in response to a threat of an imminent attack by hezbollah and iran benz against israel, the u has taken the rare step of announcing the deployment of the uss georgia and ordered the uss abraham lincoln, a carrier strike group, also equipped with fighter jets, to accelerate its ongoing transit to the region. now this move came after the

u.s. secretary of defense lloyd austin had a telephone call with his israeli counterpart, gallant in which he told israel essentially that the united states will take every step to defend israel, which according to gallant is facing a threat from hezbollah and iran like never before and warned them not to start a warbecause the response from israel will be like never before. on the diplomatic front, the united states, france, germany, the uk and italy yesterday issued a joint statement in which they called for a deescalation in the region as well as offering their, again, once again, the support for the ongoing efforts to find a cease-fire and hostage deal in gaza. the next round of negotiation will be held in cairo on thursday. back to you, frances. >> claudio lavanga, thank you. the ukrainian offensive inside russia continues with its military saying it has captured nearly 400 square miles of

them were, like, jumping on the roof of my car, on the windshield. >> reporter: while there's no video of what happened prior, footage from a feesh balcony shows the frightening play by play. some focussed on vandalizing his car, digging through its contents and another group targeted him. >> i came up to my car to pull the doors, and, like, some of them, like, were, in my back. and they started, like, hitting me and punching me. >> reporter: the attack left him with a broken leg and covered in cuts and bruises. lapd says they have yet to make any arrests. meanwhile, he credits his survival to an unknown woman who pulled him away from the crowd to safety. >> um, like, close my head, and i was on the ground. so, and suddenly, so someone, like, pulled me out and she literally saved my life.

winds of 40 mooiiles per hour. it looks like it's going to strengthen over the next couple days. a tropical storm warning in effect for the virgin islands and puerto rico. here is the expected track of the storm. you can see the tropical storm getting very close to puerto rico by tonight and early tomorrow morning. winds around 60 miles per hour. and the storm strengthens into a hurricane as it heads to the north. it looks like it stays in the open atlantic ocean well to the east of the united states, though it's getting fairly close to bermuda by the weekend. the other story a little closer to home is the heat. we've got a heat advisory in effect for a good chunk of the south. 35 million people impacted. temperatures today well into the 90s to near 100. 100 in dallas.
