school in santa clara. start out with upper 50s, a drop off time jacket weather for the beginning of the day, and short sleeves that pick up time. but we do have some really comfortable temperatures for most of our microclimates anywhere from low 60s in the coast to mid seconds for the inner bay and then farther inland. we're in the upper 80s and low 90s just about normal for this time of year. we're going to be just a touch warmer in a few spots tomorrow, and then seeing the temperatures coming down a few degrees in time for the weekend. so we'll be watching out for you on that. and mike says that even though it's tuesday, it's a smooth commute. yeah, because tuesday does tend to see a heavier volume and it looks like there may be a good amount of traffic out there. the bay bridge toll plaza still moving well, but the metering lights will. the traffic meter is well across the span. we had earlier crash over in concord, and that did clear nicely over here for highway four. benicia got schools there going on and the bridge is moving smoothly. highway 37 typical slowing and it looks like they may have cleared that

long standing disabled vehicle eastbound 580 coming out of san rafael over toward richmond. this earlier crash, as you come past central has cleared for the westbound 80 and good recovery. the bay bridge. we just showed that to you for the live look. we have schools over in moraga along with highway 24 does move very smoothly off the walnut creek interchange and no major delays. the first slowing for san jose cleared up. that second one is just about a half hour, 40 minutes ahead. back to you. well, as you and the kids head back to school, shopping for notebooks and maybe some new shoes, don't forget to add vaccinations to your to do list. today in the bay's kris sanchez joining us live now. okay. so kris we talked about this covid certainly top of a lot of people's minds. but we're talking about other vaccinations. yeah. so post pandemic more than a year later health data shows that some children are still behind in their regular childhood vaccinations. over the summer, we certainly did see a surge in covid cases. and it continues to spread because of new variants. however we expect an updated booster by the end of august or early september, so check with
6:04 am
your doctor's office on that. as for the other vaccines, double check that your kiddos are up to date as well, as the school does not have to check every single year, so it's kind of on you. according to data from the centers for disease control, the vaccination rate for kindergartners is at 93%, which is a 2% drop. that includes in areas of san francisco, oakland, burlingame and santa clara county. that 2% may not seem like a lot, but it's three quarters of a million children who are at increased risk of getting things like measles. now, measles, we thought we had eradicated 24 years ago. but now in the last couple of years, we've seen pockets spring up largely in areas where there are, you know, more than a handful of unvaccinated people. now, a reminder that public school children are required to have vaccines for polio, hepatitis b, measles, mumps and rubella. that's the mmr vaccine. as well as the dtap vaccine. before entering kindergarten. also varicella, which is

chickenpox. they also have to have tdap and that chickenpox booster, the varicella to head into seventh grade. and as i was mentioning to you, laura, they do check we walked in to pick up schedules in seventh grade with my older daughter. and they're like, you can't even get your schedule right because i forgot to submit the paperwork. exactly. the triplets now all in high school this year. and it's like i had to gather all that info. yeah, yeah. so definitely on the to do list. yeah. get it done. but it's a productive tuesday. exactly. well, make sure you stay with us here on today in the bay all week long. we've got your back to school coverage. we're all in it together. if you missed any of it, catch up wherever you stream. nbc bay area streams 24/7 on roku, pluto and of course, other platforms. well, turning now to decision 2024 and here is a live look we want to give you of los angeles. this is where tim walz will make a solo stop today, visiting for the first time since kamala harris selected him as her running mate. he's expected to attend a convention and later a

6:08 am
of the democratic coalition and is now leading in some polls. what we're seeing here is young people respond incredibly favorably to vice president kamala harris over the last just a couple of weeks, the harris-walz ticket is seeking to carry that momentum into the democratic national convention next week, and vice president harris and president biden will hold their first joint event since he dropped out of the presidential race on thursday in maryland. while former president trump is set to hold a rally on saturday in pennsylvania, which you know is a critical battleground state. marcus, that it is. well it's a nonstop event and we know you'll help us through it. brie thank you. well, new at six for the second time in less than a month, the same group of san francisco rv dwellers are facing an eviction deadline. more than 20 families now living in their rvs along the zoo road near the san francisco zoo. many of them only

and it's the first day of school for the alum rock union school district. it's going to be a great day. we have some nice weather starting out in the upper 50s and 80 degrees at pickup time, so comfortably warm and it will be slightly warmer tomorrow. we'll talk about when and where coming up in our full microclimate forecast. and in the background you can kind of catch a little bit of albany there. albany schools coming back online as well. the bay bridge though the toll plaza. it's 615. and we're just now seeing the backup. give it a couple of weeks. we should see this filled in by this time. but right now, enjoy the gradual build through the east bay. we'll show you more coming up. well, good morning, and very happy tuesday to you. we just got good inflation news. the

producer price index was just released. the increase was half of what experts were expecting. just one tenth of 1%. and the new york fed yesterday said it thought inflation was largely beaten. so that's more good news. all right. forget pumpkin spice. how about an al pastor latte? probably not. but a few minutes ago, starbucks announced that it had replaced its ceo with the ceo of chipotle. chipotle stock will be under pressure today because he was a good ceo over there. probably why starbucks nabbed him. brie was telling you about elon musk and trump sharing their vision of america last night with a live conversation on x. it did not go as planned with big technical problems. again, here's the failure screen. thousands of people saw as they tried to tune in at 5 p.m. our time and the audience was capped at just over 100,000 people at the time. they worked out the technical problems about 40 minutes later, and more people could join. musk blamed a ddos

attack on his site, writing working on shutting it down. a lot of people doubt his explanation. ddos stands for distributed denial of service. it's when a bad guy sends a huge amount of data requests to a server with the intent of crashing it. the thing is, a bunch of people logging in all at the same time to listen to an interview is more or less the same thing. if a thousand people show up at a party, you invited a thousand people to and you run out of food. it's not because anybody crashed your party. also, the rest of x was just fine. so his explanation unlikely. a source at the fbi says agents are investigating hack attempts into both political campaigns in the race for president. earlier this month, trump's campaign said it had been hacked by a foreign actor after accessing a worker's email, roger stone tells the washington post he thinks it was him, and a new survey from a

much right now because a lot of people are trying to squeeze more summer fun out of that. but a lot of families are also looking ahead on how to stretch the back-to-school dollars. in a recent survey of 1200 parents, 73% of them say that they're worried about the higher prices for the items on their list. according to the federal data, prices have gone up nearly 25% over the last four years. this year, families expect to spend $586 per student. this is just under the price they spent last year. they also say that they will actually spend a little less on technology, and really focus on finding those values from a quality standpoint. i'll be honest, i'm a mom and i can't really tell the difference. we shop at both types of stores. we buy name brand. we also just buy, you know, the more generic versions. and honestly, a marker is a marker, a crayon is a crayon. and so the difference there is the price. that personal finance expert says that focusing on value for families actually can save you up to $50 per child. that's

looking like, what else do we have? do we really need new markers this year? okay. hey, new at six. from popcorn to pickleball. rohnert park raising the curtain on the second act for now shuttered movie theater. this is a 16 screen multiplex on rohnert park expressway, which closed last november. city planners just approved turning it into a pickleball pickleball center and health hub. you can see from some of these renderings here. the courts will be located both indoors and outdoors, according to the press democrat, it will be the largest pickleball facility anywhere in the north bay. i've played at one in the south bay. pretty fun. you know the sound though? it's very loud. i would imagine so. it's better than being right next door to you. all right, let's, heading out for pickleball today. outside? yeah. it's going to be a nice day, but you probably in the valleys want to head out earlier because there the temperatures will be
6:21 am
warming up as we take a live look outside in walnut creek. it is a clear start to our day. it's also nice and cool. and for the next few hours, it will be comfortable. so as we get ready to take those pictures, it's the first day of school loading up those backpacks and lunch bags in dublin. we're starting out with some upper 50s and a sunny sky throughout the morning. also mostly sunny at pickup time. it will be in the upper 70s and hopefully it is a great first day of school. we're going to see temperatures in the mid 80s for parts of the east bay. we are going to see a high of 87 in morgan hill for this afternoon, up to 90 in concord and antioch, while oakland, hayward, fremont in the mid 70s. today vallejo will reach a high of 82 degrees and mid to upper 70s for much of the peninsula. but near the coast it's back to the low 60s and also cool in san francisco. breezy and some times of sunshine. while the north bay will range from upper 60s in bodega to bay 78 mill valley and 85 in sonoma, and a little bit
6:22 am
hotter farther north. but overall, we are seeing a fairly steady weather pattern and the pressure systems that are coming in that will bring about a slight change for the weekend. this low dropping down the coast will, with its clockwise under counterclockwise wind flow, will kind of push in more of an ocean breeze and bring down those temperatures even in the inland valleys. but that change is very slight in morgan hill. we're going from upper 80s for today to mid 80s for the weekend, and then back up to the upper 80s for early next week. so not a lot of changes here, and it's also nice and cool for each morning. temperatures in the mid to upper 50s san francisco continuing to see times of clouds. and it will be breezy with highs in the upper 60s there. mike, you are seeing the lanes filling in at the bay bridge toll plaza, which is not a surprise, but the pattern here is still a little more gradual build. this being a tuesday, i expected they'd be filled by now, but we're almost there by mid parking lot. give it a couple of weeks a heavier volume

district is home to 21 schools here in the south bay. like linda vista, vista elementary behind me. but because of declining enrollment, the board is preparing to close nine of these schools by fall of 2025. so in about a year from now, the district did have 10,000 students enrolled. this was before covid. today it's down to around 7600. you might recall a few weeks ago, parents gathered outside district headquarters to vent their frustrations not only about the closures, but the fact that the district is starting this school year without a permanent school superintendent, and also over the fact that there's a lawsuit by 11 students claiming the district conspired to hire hide sex assaults by a music teacher who is now in prison. some fear that lawsuit could bankrupt the district. and on top of all that, parents say the board has not communicated well with them. it doesn't feel like there's the collaboration we'd like to see. we're here to give them another chance to be here to have that conversation. i'm concerned about my child. just because we don't know what the future entails, i understand

that the parents are frustrated, and, i want to reassure the parents that, as a member of the board, i'm committed to meeting the parents wherever they are. back in may, the board kicked out the board president by a majority vote. just months after firing the district superintendent. the board has said it plans to announce the new superintendent at its regular meeting in a few weeks from now. on september 12th, some parents are even floating the idea of student walkouts or a recall of board members if this turmoil doesn't end. reporting live here in san jose. bob redell today in the bay. big concern there. all right, bob, thank you. we are moving to the bay area forward for back to school week. and that includes the very first class at dublin's emerald high school. the campus is set to open this morning to freshmen and sophomores after four years of construction. this is also the first high school built and opened in alameda

6:37 am
the one that we're talking about first and then another one, an unconfirmed one, was reported over the weekend. and it's hard to imagine what you would do in a situation like that. remain cool, calm and collected is what ian walters did. he's a sixth grade teacher over at head-royce in oakland. he and a buddy were out on kayaks when they spotted a shark tailing them. now they were out in open water, but they say that they weren't that far from pillar point over in half moon bay when an unexpected visitor tagged along on their fishing trip. lovely fishing, beautiful water and then i noticed a very large dorsal fin behind my buddy's kayak. and then another very large tail behind the dorsal fin, and i let him know that there was a shark behind him. and, we talked about it briefly and the shark followed my buddy for maybe 2 or 3 minutes, just very slow, nothing threatening of any kind. there he is now. the shark
6:38 am
eventually circled around and started following ian's kayak until they floated off toward some seals. and then the shark disappeared under water. ian says he may not be rushing to get back in the water anytime too soon, but he values learning firsthand about the shark's natural behavior. it was simply curious, you know, it was just there because that's where it lives. and we were in its, you know, house, essentially. and it came up to check us out. now, last night, pacifica police posted about an unconfirmed shark sighting around noon on saturday, august 10th, here at linda maher beach. according to authorities, a surfer reported seeing a shark about 200 yards from shore west of the main beach parking lot. the shark was described as six feet in length and no aggressive behavior was reported there as well. and we're seeing some surfers in the distance there. you can see
6:39 am
they're catching some early morning waves. authorities say these shark sightings, whether they are confirmed or unconfirmed, are good reminders that whether you are out in the water or not, be aware of your surroundings and, you know, exercise caution, especially when you are out in the water that is not your home in pacifica, ginger conejero saab today in the bay. i think i'm going to stick to the lakes that i'm used to. all right. thanks so much, ginger. isn't that a song? yeah don't chase those waterfalls. there you go. well, new at 6:00. as if the roads and highways not clogged enough, you might see even more vehicles on the road very, very soon. that is because waymo is actually testing its self-driving cars on san francisco freeway. starting this week. this is a look at some of the maps posted by waymo on x announcing that testing yesterday shows the distance between lake merced and oracle park. the post indicates that the trip, while taking the
6:40 am
highways, can be up to 20 minutes quicker, as compared with taking just surface streets. this week's rides are limited to waymo employees and follows similar testing happening in phoenix. all right, let's take a live look out this morning. beautiful sunrise there in dublin. good morning dublin. all right. meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect weather wise. i mean, beautiful sights there, but it's going to bring the heat as well. yeah, a little bit warmer. it's not like what we saw in july where we were dealing with triple digits. so the good thing is that this warm up will be very subtle. and our morning start is nice and cool as well. we're in the mid to upper 50s as you head out in san francisco in walnut creek and in palo alto and san jose. now at 60 degrees. it's also the first day of school at the alum rock union school district. will see those temperatures in the upper 50s that drop off time. hopefully it's a great start to the day. you can enjoy that sunshine and a high of about 80 today in the south bay. mike, you are seeing some slowing near the caldecott

make sure to obey road closure warnings, the chp says. last friday, he ignored the warning from road workers to avoid a portion of highway one closed from a slide. it turns out he fell about 100ft while trying to cross it. that led to a search and rescue operation not to mention an injured forearm and head trauma. adding insult to injury, he's now facing criminal charges for failure to follow that closure. elon musk and donald trump talked about their vision for america in a conversation on x last night. and scott mcgrew joins us now. musk was careful to call it a conversation and not an interview. not an interview. he specifically said that he wanted people to understand they would be sharing a vision, not an

adversarial type of interview, with tough questions. now what it was for the first 20 minutes was nothing. as technical problems once again plagued the former twitter the same way it did for ron desantis. eventually it did get under way. here's trump describing that attempt on his life. i'm a believer now. i'm more of a believer. i think, and a lot of people have said that to me. a lot of great people have said that to me, actually. but it was it was amazing that i happened to be turned just at that perfect angle. and, all because i put down a chart on immigration that showed that the numbers were so great. i love that chart even more. maybe it's a sign. maybe that's a sign. you know, it's an immigration sign. now musk blamed a hack attack called a denial of service for the delay and glitches. but many experts rolled their eyes. we went over that in business and tech. earlier on our 6 a.m. news, the harris campaign was quick to pounce, reposting trump making fun of desantis glitchy twitter interview back in 2023 and

morning, a south bay nonprofit is celebrating 30 years of supporting education and being environmentally conscious. so kari hall joins us here to talk about how they're helping this really back to school season. love this story. yes, it's great resource for area teachers. is raft or has been helping bay area teachers add to their stem curriculum through donated items and some of which they have collected from silicon valley tech companies. it's one of the best warehouse memberships you could have, especially if you're a teacher or in any kind of education. their goal is to save these items from the landfill so that students get hands on learning and parents and educators can save money. and we hear more from ceo jason morella. if you have items to donate, we are here and please donate it because the right people are going to benefit from it. it's going to help teachers. it's going to help parents. it's going to help the community, but it's also going to help the

environment because we will repurpose items so that they don't go to a landfill and they don't hurt the environment, and they're repurposed in a way that's teaching kids and the next generation on how to be environmentally friendly. raft is also aware of their transportation emissions. they have an electric maker mobile that they drive to bring stem learning to those schools. and right now they're having a huge back to school sale that runs through friday. you can find out more details about raft and climate change and how it affects the bay area on our website. nbcbayarea.com and click on the climate crisis tab. great use of resources there. thanks. well, trending this morning, former president barack obama's summer playlist is out. and let's just say that the former president has a very diverse style. oh my good lord. cause i'ma pump me up a double shot of whiskey. they know me and jack daniels gotta hit the streets back. there's a party downtown near fifth street. everybody at the bar. so he

traveling across the bay area waters right now this time of year. really cool to see that at pacifica. all right, so we may have some people going to the coast for the next couple of days to maybe catch a view of the whales or get some cooler weather. our microclimates are wide ranging, and that continues again today. we're starting out in san jose with a look at this beautiful sunrise. it is nice and clear. we have a cool start to the morning, and as you're sending the kids off to school in santa clara, we're in the upper 50s at drop off time, so we need a jacket for the start of the day. but later on this afternoon, it's going to be so comfortable with highs up to about 80 degrees and sunshine. hopefully it's a great first day of school and our temperatures in the south bay will reach into the mid 80s for los gatos upper seconds for morgan hill, and right at about 79 for milpitas. and we'll see temperatures in the east bay in the mid 70s from oakland, hayward to fremont, martinez in the upper 80s and
6:53 am
low 90s for concord, as well as antioch, pleasanton today 84 degrees and will be in the mid 70s for redwood city and staying cool. if you are going to the coast. you'll also need some layers. will only make it up to about 62 and half moon bay in san francisco in the upper 60s. downtown and north bay. highs in the mid 80s. for the most part, a couple of low 90s there farther north, but we are still looking at the same weather pattern with high pressure just off to our east. but then we'll see a low dipping down the coastline over the next couple of days. that's going to reinforce that ocean breeze that we get that brings in the natural air conditioning and even helping out some of our inland valleys with a slight dip in temperatures. it's not going to be huge, but we are going to go from in morgan hill, highs in the upper 80s to some mid 80s for saturday and sunday, and then going just up a few more degrees early next week so you can see the changes in our temperatures over the next week. it's not all that significant, and it's great to see that we
6:54 am
don't have any extreme heat in the forecast, especially in august. sometimes we can get hit with those temperatures like what we saw in early july. so i don't see any of that at least for the next seven days. mike, what's the update on the caldecott tunnel? we're going to reveal the speed sensors. oh much better. we had a lot of slowing eastbound. there was some overheated car heading in toward the bore. one of the bores was involved for the caldecott westbound. we have some activity still visible, i think, and that's why there's a little bit of slowing. it just cleared the incident, so that's clear from the chp report. that hazard is clear and so is the caldecott tunnel for both directions. more traffic volume coming in through moraga. moraga and alkaline have schools that start today. watch those surface streets. walnut creek moving well, but there's a new incident on 242 that i'm watching a good volume of traffic from richmond over in towards centerville. no major problems there, though, for the rest of the bay. south bay wakes up. back to you. thank you. mike. well happening now. the peak of the perseid meteor shower continuing after starting in july. if the sky is clear,
