convention in los angeles, vice president harris does not have any public events on her schedule today. >> former president donald trump is also off the campaign trail. they want trump to refocus his message and increase his campaign's intensity and the former president spoke with elon musk for two hours last night on the platform x after the start of the event was delayed because of technical glitches. let's bring in garrett haake and mike memoli. mike, we'll start with you and governor waldz, first of several solo events for him this week, what can we expect from harris' running mate. >> this is an important moment for governor walz, he made this splash nationally, debuting as kamala harris' running mate. he certainly slid right into the ticket. this is now him on his own stage with a better chance to

united nations is denying any involvement. >> let's bring in ken dilanian. ken, where does this fbi investigation stand right now and what are we hearing from the trump and the biden/harris campaigns about those alleged hacks. >> reporter: the fbi isn't confirming that iran was behind this hack, but microsoft intelligence unit said on friday that an iranian government-linked group tried to hack into an unnamed presidential group. and former donald trumped a viedzer roger stone said his account were hacked. it does look the hack of trump campaign was somewhat successful and appears to be linked to iran. urging news organizations to not report on these supposedly

stolen documents. the harris campaign says they, quote, vigilantly monitor and protect against cyberthreats and they see no everyday that they were breached. >> we've seen hacks before. the 2016 russian hacks that led to the leaking of hillary clinton policies. >> reporter: u.s. intelligence officials believe that china, russia and iran are all trying to manipulate american politics and this sort of hack and dump operation may be the easiest way to do it. the difference with 2016, back then, they turned over those documents to wikileaks. today, they're trying to get

mainstream media. the report on this. >> ken, always great to have you. thank you. southern california is bracing for potential aftershocks today after an earthquake rattled millions of people on monday. >> it was a 4.4 magnitude quake, it struck near los angeles around lunchtime yesterday. no reports of serious damage. lot of people say they felt it. that includes our own steve patterson. steve, for people who don't live in california, never experienced an earthquake before, not the biggest, right, on the scale, but what was it like? >> reporter: first of all, for everybody who hasn't experienced them, it's awful. i don't recommend it.

bankruptcy this past weekend, it plans to close nearly a hundred of its stores in 31 states, the company said it's in active talks with multiple potential buyers and hopes to get a court approval for a sale in the coming weeks. and a historic 1954 mercedes race car, isn't that pretty, up to $70 million, up for sale soon, the mercedes and ten other historic cars, are being sold by the indianapolis motor speedway museum at different events this year and next year. the museum said it was selling the cars to help restore and care for its remaining collection. so, you know, some time until christmas, kate, i'm sure your husband wouldn't mind seeing one of those. >> that was a plug. >> i don't think so. do they run? does the car run?

ousted congressman george santos is back in the spotlight today after facing a federal judge ahead of his september trial, santos who represented a new york district was expelled from congress in an historic vote last december, he faces nearly two dozen charges including wire fraud, making false statements to the federal election commission and aggravated identity theft. he's pleaded not guilty to all of those charges. antonia hylton joins me now. walk us through what happened in this hearing today. >> reporter: this morning's hearing was about jury selection and witnesses and the two teams going back and forth. the santos team had asked that prospective jurors go through an extensive, very long questioning process to try to determine some of their beliefs and potential biases against them, because he's been essentially a victim

of negative media coverage. the government shot back against that saying that if he has been the victim of negative coverage that's because he's courted it himself. he's still openly making statements about his political thoughts, he sat down for interviews, he's been parodied on snl and records on cameo. the judge decided to not do that. what we'll see, hundreds of jurors come here, go through the process, and they're looking for 12 jurors and 6 alternates, there was talk at one point of plea deal, but all signs that they're moving toward a real trial in early september. >> early to mid-september, how long are we expecting that trial to last and what are we hearing about potential witnesses? >> reporter: so, we'll see jury selection start on september 9th. and that should take about a week and then the trial will get under way, but here's the thing,

another thing that came up in this hearing today is the fact that the government has three dozen witnesses, that would take weeks and weeks to get through, so we know the judge has asked them to streamline that a little bit, they don't want jurors to be stuck for more than three weeks or so time here, kate. >> antonia, thank you. a devastating setback for jordan chiles and usa gymnastics, the court of arbitration for sport is upholding their decision to strip chiles of her olympic bronze medal. this all began after chiles' coach challenged the scoring on her floor routine during the individual competition last week. her score was corrected which ended up bumping chiles up to third place from fifth. the romania olympic committee appealed saying this inquiry was made after the official deadline. emilie ikeda joins us now. usa gymnastics submitted new evidence they say proves that chiles' challenge was submitted

on time. why won't the appeal be reviewed? >> reporter: very good question. that video has nothing to do with this breaking development that really is a major setback for usa gymnastics, the court of arbitration for sport said it's not an issue of the editorial the argument usa gymnastics is presenting and submitted with this letter and the new video, it comes down to the rules of the court, it doesn't reopen the case even when new everyday is presented unless all parties involved. agree. we also reached out to romania gymnastics officials and we haven't heard back for comment. . other way they could potentially win an appeal here and help jordan chiles maintain her medal is by going through an even higher international court but legal experts say that could take a matter of months if not years. >> lot of back and forth.

because advil targets pain at the source of inflammation. so for faster pain relief, advil the pain away. following developing news right now in the north bay, where a brush fire sparked this morning. nbc bay area sky ranger flew over the growing fire. it's in a rural area of novato. it started just before six this morning. crews are now working to put it out by helicopter and on the ground. so far, it's burned about 30 acres. no evacuations ordered at this time. and at this time, it's not clear what sparked this fire. moving on to some other news. it is that time of year students are going back to school. but parents in the south bay are growing frustrated with their school district leadership. nbc bay area's bob redell is at the alum rock school district with the story. linda vista elementary behind me here in east san jose, welcomed

kids back to school early this morning. this was the scene just before 8:00 as staff reopened the gates. students we spoke with off camera. they seemed excited to meet their new teachers and classmates, and were unaware of the turmoil facing this district, which many parents we spoke with are concerned about. the number one issue, the possibility of school closures, the alum rock union school district is home to 21 schools. the district had 10,000 students enrolled before covid. today it's down to around 7600. so because of that decline in enrollment, board members are preparing to close nine schools by the fall of 2025. so in a year from now, you might recall a few weeks ago, parents gathered outside district headquarters to vent their frustrations about a lawsuit by 11 students claiming the district conspired to hide sex assaults by a music teacher who is now in prison. some fear that lawsuit could bankrupt the district. there's also the fact that the district is starting the school year without a permanent superintendent, and then, of course, those possible

school closures we're keeping our fingers crossed and hoping for the best because we've actually tried a number of schools. actually, as i said, this is our third school in second grade because we've had issue issues at the two private schools that we tried. i obviously want their education to be a priority for, you know, a lot of officials. so as a parent, it's very concerning. in spite of everything going on, do you feel like your kids are getting a good education here? i think so. i think linda vista does a great job. i think alum rock school district does a great job. i understand that the parents are frustrated and i want to reassure the parents that, as a member of the board, i'm committed to meeting the parents wherever they are by a majority vote. the board already kicked out the board president. this was back in may, just months after firing the district superintendent. the board has said it plans to announce the new superintendent at its regular meeting on september 12th. some parents are even floating the idea of student

walkouts, or a recall of board members. if this turmoil doesn't end here in east san jose. bob redell nbc, bay area news. thanks bob. not too many changes to the weather. it's set to be another warm day outside. here's meteorologist kari hall. our temperatures today will be very much like what we've seen recently, with highs up to 80 degrees in san jose and in morgan hill. expect some upper 80s and a few low seconds with a slight warm up in some of our valley temperatures. concord and antioch up to 90 degrees with mid seconds from oakland down to fremont and near the coast. it's in the low 60s again today with mid 70s for redwood city, san francisco in the upper 60s and for the north bay. we're looking at highs mainly in the mid 80s, but it will be as hot as 91 degrees for ukiah as we go into the next couple of days, we'll continue to see a range and temperatures like this across the bay area. we'll get a look at our 7-day forecast coming up in about 30 minutes. thanks, kari. another upcoming eviction

for a group of rv dwellers in san francisco. there are fees were parked on winston drive by stonestown mall and they were ordered to leave last month. so they moved to zoo road near the san francisco zoo. now, more than 20 families are there living in their rvs, but they will now have to move once again. the city warned them to move, or else they risk being towed. san francisco leaders say they are working to find these families a more permanent and long-term solution. our sergio quintana is following the story. you can watch his full report tonight during our 5:00 newscast. as if the roads and highways are not clogged enough, you might see even more cars on the road. that's because waymo is now testing its self-driving cars on san francisco freeways this week. take a look at some maps posted on x by waymo. it shows the trip between lake merced and oracle park. it's 20 minutes faster if you take the highway instead of the surface streets. so this week, waymo employees will be testing the

their ballot, both measures would make abortions legal up until around 24 weeks of pregnancy and enshrine abortion rights in the state's constitution, so far eight states will vote on abortion rights this november. tropical storm ernesto has just formed in the atlantic. forecasters expect the storm to strengthen to a category 1 hurricane. up to 10 inches of rain across parts of puerto rico. while no direct impact on the mainland the u.s. could dangerous rip currents and larger waves than usual on the east coast. and the olympic flag has arrived in los angeles, the host city of the 2028 summer games. the flag was flown over 5600 miles on a delta airlines jet carrying american athletes and officials with l.a. 2028 and palm trees painted on the outside. the flag will be placed inside

l.a.'s city hall, this will be the third time that l.a. has hosted the games in the olympics' modern era. previously hosting back in 1932 and 1984. the head of the cia is expected to return to the middle east in the coming days for new peace talks in the israel/hamas war, according to a u.s. official familiar with the matter. it all comes as israel is bracing for a possible retaliation from iran after the assassination of a top leader from the iranian-backed militant group hamas. initial reports that iran may be planning on participating if the peace talks but iran said it has no plans to be part of those negotiations. ellison barber is in tel aviv the office of the israeli prime minister netanyahu pushing back on reporting that he might have added some new conditions to a recent cease-fire proposal, what do we know about that and about where things stand in general

with these peace negotiations? >> reporter: what netanyahu is saying in response to that article, they weren't adding new things but trying to get clarification, we feel like things have changed throughout the negotiations, at one point where it seemed like israel was going to be open to the idea of this latest round of negotiations and obviously there's been quite a bit of delays here leading up to what the u.s. and other mediators hoped would be a deal. look, we were talk about a permanent cease-fire this time and then israel and netanyahu started talking more of a temporary truce, not something we wanted to agreed to and hamas bent and came up with a compromise. they said, okay, we'll go into the first wave of cease-fire agreement and then we'll talk about a possibility of whether or not this will be permanent or not. some different views on that.

netanyahu and his office in terms of saying whether or not they've added new things, they're trying to clarify it, there was reporting in israeli media in summer where there was concern among security officials within israel they felt netanyahu was possibly trying to torpedo this deal, that's something that netanyahu and his office have denied. on thursday, the u.s., egypt and qatar have said come together, let's meet and doha, or cairo, it appears it's going to be doha, we know the cia director is on his way there. when secretary of state blinken was asked if negotiations will go on if hamas wasn't there he sort of dodged that question yesterday.

kate. >> ellison, 30 seconds, hamas is claiming to have killed one hostage and injured two others. >> reporter: they're saying a male hostage was shot by a guard and in a separate incident two female hostages were severely injured. a statement released yesterday this was become of the strikes inside of gaza this weekend. israel said they don't have the intelligence to confirm or deny it but they're looking into it right now. >> ellison, thanks so much. let's head to greece now, where hundreds of firefighters are battling a deadly wildfire that's closing in on the capital city of athens. strong winds and extreme heat are fueling the fast-moving fire which is impacting millions of greeks and american tourists on summer vacation. here's kelly cobiella.

flames shooting more than 80 feet into the air as a fast-moving and unpredictable wildfire closed in on the greek capital athens overnight. the ancient buildings that make the city a tourist hot spot with more than a million americans visiting every year in the path. >> i have never seen anything like it. i've never seen a fire -- all over, all over greece. >> reporter: susan naismith and her husband from alabama saw the fire when they arrived sunday. >> we couldn't believe all the smoke and just literally so close to us and just a giant smoke cloud that almost looked like a mushroom cloud from a bomb or something. >> reporter: the fire forcing evacuations, burning homes and businesses, turning hotels into shelters. at least one person has died. more than a dozen treated for burns and breathing problems. the smoke and fire closing in on monday. kate and ryan from california capturing this. in greece to celebrate their daughter's college graduation. >> while we were here, we received emergency alerts on our

phones, which was both concerning and comforting at the same time. >> reporter: this satellite image showing the size. the fire scorching 25,000 acres. warnings for children, pregnant women and the elderly to be extra cautious because of the smoke. >> this smoke was bad. we did really smell it yesterday. we could see it obviously in the air for the last few days. it didn't change our travel plans at all. >> reporter: nearly 700 firefighters are battling this blaze. got a bit of reprieve from the winds this morning. but the gusts pick up again this afternoon. with temperatures forecasted to soar above 100 degrees today and tomorrow. a rare case of bipartisan agreement on the campaign trail, a push to end the federal tax on tips earned by service and hospitality workers, tips make up the bulk of their total pay. here's morgan chesky.

it is a united topic among both campaigns. donald trump said he would put an end to taxes on tips back in june. kamala harris mentioning that promise in a speech in vegas, where one in four workers are in that hospital industry. the campaigns have stayed light on the specifics so far, but servers -- this is music to their ears no matter who's saying it. the idea has been floated by both presidential nominees. first by former president donald trump. >> we are going to not charge taxes on tips, people making tips. >> reporter: and just days ago, by the new democratic nominee, vice president kamala harris. >> eliminate taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers. >> reporter: but politics aside, the push for no taxes on tips is gaining momentum nationwide and getting a big thumb's up from many restaurant servers. >> it would be amazing, especially because i have kids.

>> reporter: tina, a waitress for three years, is excited about the proposal. >> it would help me out so much, because right now i kind of live paycheck to paycheck. everything is going up, but our tips don't go up that much. it is actually decreasing. >> reporter: so, how exactly would it work? right now tips are treated like regular income, meaning they're subject to both income and payroll taxes, even for cash tips. although, those often go unreported. servers rely on tips to subsidize their earnings and many wait staff and bartenders get three-quarters of their income from tips. if a policy exempting tips from taxes were to pass, experts say it could be challenging to administer and note it would only help a small fraction of the low-income workforce. the nonpartisan committee for a responsible federal budget

supersized trend hitting the high seas. cruises have become one of the most popular ways to vacation. and now supersized ships with everything from music venues to waterparks to zip lines are working to keep pace with the record-breaking demand. >> cruise has 23 bars, 21 dining venues and three epic water slides. >> reporter: a new report finds that the biggest cruise ships have doubled in size since 2000. with the world's largest, royal caribbean's icon of the seas able to carry some 7,000 passengers. the megaship is 1,200 feet long, the equivalent of three football fields and almost the same height as the empire state building, not including the spire. onboard for the maiden voyage in january say the ship itself was the destination. what stood out to you? >> we were pleasantly surprised with how easy it was to

space weather forecasters are reporting severe geomagnetic storm conditions on the sun, including at least five strong solar flares since august 10th. the activity was much more intense than initially expected. we're right now in a period called solar maximum. the sun's magnetic field is at the peak of a 11-year cycle. it sends out shooting streams of plasma that are 400 times hotter than the sun itself. scientists expected this increased solar activity, but the intensity of this flare-up has really caught them by surprise. it could happen again. interfering with power grids by surging higher voltages through transmission lines. so power companies already having to prepare to avoid any disruptions. we could see frequency

county, where we'll soon find out the fate of three officers involved in the deadly beating of a jail inmate. that inmate, michael tyree, was beaten to death in 2015. the superior court found three corrections officers guilty for his murder. but as the officers were serving their sentences for second degree murder, an appeals judge overturned their convictions. that's because of a changed state law. the district attorney of santa clara county told us to expect an announcement regarding a development in this case, in about 30 minutes from now. at 130, our reporter marianne favro is there at the court. we'll have a full report on the decision in our 5:00 newscast. also today, the dui suspect accused of slamming his car into some community service officers
