meteorologist kari hall has been tracking this storm and it is moving away from puerto rico right now. we are seeing it strengthening now into a hurricane as a category one. and it is expected to strengthen even more over the next couple of days. currently, winds are at 85mph. it's moving at a steady speed of 13mph directly to the north, and it is expected, for the most part, to stay out over the open atlantic as it strengthens, but then make a direct hit on bermuda, possibly as a category two hurricane, by saturday morning. so we'll continue to monitor that. but we are also seeing that these hurricane conditions continue to get worse with climate change, as we are seeing some warmer than normal sea surface water temperatures. and that gives more fuel to these storms as they develop over this very warm water. and we are expecting this to rapidly intensify as it moves over a pool of some unusually warm water out there in the atlantic. so we'll be watching that. we head over to mike now

cal fire will help plant more trees after a fire to replenish our forests. in cooperation with cal forest, public and private landowners across the west can get seedlings of conifer trees to help recover what those fires destroyed. nick laird from cal forest explains why this is so important. it's because of climate change, the recent wildfires that we're experiencing, they're burning with such intensity that they're burning the ground even. and that's killing seed that would naturally regenerate and grow trees out in the landscape. and so we're having to assist that process by by starting the seedlings here at the nursery so that they can then be planted in those areas that are not going to regrow. cal forest has grown and shipped over 400 million seedlings across the west in the past 25 years, and this additional funding helps them collect more seeds and replace

equipment. they're always looking for volunteers to hike to those remote areas, to plant the seeds and change the future of our planet. if you're interested, we have the link on our website of cal forest nurseries on our website nbcbayarea.com, and look for this story under the climate and crisis tab. well, that's an inspiration to go on a hike. all right. it is 648 for you this morning. you know, wine harvest season officially underway in the east bay today in the bay's bob redell joins us live from las positas vineyards in livermore, where workers have been up picking those grapes before sunrise. they've been so busy. so, bob, are they saying how this year's growing season is, was and is going? yeah, these are workers that have been out here for at least over the past hour since before sunrise. you want to pick your grapes while the weather is still cool. as you mentioned, las positas vineyards here in livermore, you're looking at the verdello varietal. this is a portuguese varietal. it's obviously a white

6:51 am
one of the bunches of grapes here. these guys work really fast, wow, well, here, let's come over here. well, they've made a lot of progress since we got here, show me what you like about these grapes and why you why you chose to pick today. yeah. so you can see. so verdello notice it's nice and loose, you know, that's definitely what we want to see. it allows the clusters to dry out, prevent any, you know, spoilage from getting into the cluster colors just right. you can see just a little yellowing, but no sunburn, which was definitely. you're looking for a good a good taste. yeah, yeah. so you want to have plenty of flavor in the skins you want to have nice brown, crunchy seeds and that's good. yeah. all right. yeah. it tastes good to me, you always spit out that's , that's a compliment because it's the seeds. he's on table grapes. so by the way, the blessing of the grapes are here in livermore. it's, every year, and it's going to be next wednesday

while san francisco stays in the 60s and low 70s with some breezy winds in sonoma, 89 and in santa rosa 88 degrees. we will continue with this pattern, but slight changes ahead as this low dips in from the north along the coast. it brings the pacific northwest some rain, and that makes it very close to the bay area on saturday. and that will help cool down the temperatures even in one of our warmer spots like brentwood, we get one day of some mid 80s and then we're back into the upper 80s and 90s for next week. so only some very minor changes over the next several days. upper 80s low 90s in the inland valleys, while san francisco stays in the 60s. maybe more drizzle on saturday. mike, you're seeing changes now for the south bay and the tri-valley. typical changes for the south bay. right on pattern 8587 101 showing the slower sensors there. the surprise slowing is southbound 680 coming down in towards sunol out of pleasanton. there's a crash going on just shy of the koopman exit. so watch for the jam coming down through the tri valley. typical build now that
