talking about uncertainty in san francisco. students who return today for the new school year. we are sitting down with the superintendent to learn the latest about school closures. when you know what you stand for, you know what to fight for, and history is set to play out in chicago. presidential nominee nominee kamala harris, set to be named the first woman of color to lead the ticket of a major party. we'll take you live to the windy city, where protesters are already out in force, making their voices heard. this is today in the bay. good monday morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm kris sanchez. marcus washington is off this morning. so is kerry. but cinthia pimentel is here with our forecast. and you say it's a little scrambled egg this week. yeah, that sounds good. laura was saying cheese enchilada. now eggs. really that hungry? let's
6:07 am
get this day started. the right attitude. stepping out the door. beautiful microclimates right now. san francisco. we've got that fog rolling in through the city. it's patchy. and then we go out towards walnut creek. stunning sunrise out towards the east bay. i mean, my goodness, what a beautiful night with the full moon. and now we've got this to wake up to. that's beautiful. we're going to watch our temperatures go into the 80s. this afternoon. slightly warmer and definitely a toasty tuesday in store for our workweek ahead here as we climb up those temperatures in walnut creek, nearing the 90s for tomorrow. i think that's correct. we will take a look at the changes though, right after that. coming up in my full forecast. but for now, i want to send it over to mike, who's updating us on a couple delays out there this monday morning. wow. yeah, talking about higher temperatures, i'm not a fan, but i think later on in the week what you're talking about. so stick around folks. right here. we're looking at the backup. now this is the delay. that is not a
6:08 am
surprise. we have this bay bridge backup performing. but you know, we've seen the last few days kind of adjusting in the times when we do see this visible backup and that's what's going on right now. it's just starting to build. but at the same time, we also see more slowing at the richmond bridge, which is unusual. this part of the commute is starting to change. coming out of the area of contra costa county. interesting. over here, this area, we do have this portion of west contra costa school district that's starting the school. so i thought maybe there might be a little delay, but maybe folks are not really impeded by the back to school traffic. not all of us can stay home until those kids can take off for the school first day of school, so we'll watch that as it builds and we'll see anything else that may be unusual. a saw, an unusual slowdown. i thought it was early commute building for the castro valley. why late report comes in from chp. there was some debris on northbound 238. i think that's what happened because now i see a good recovery as more volume is coming in off of 580. so again, that's counter to what your commute build should be. so i do think that that debris added to the slowing. we'll see if there's a ripple effect there in

the south bay. it's north 101. we had a few lanes blocked, north 101 approaching the 85 split earlier. two crashes were reported. one is on the shoulder, the other one now blocking just one lane. we saw some recovery, but we'll track that. that's a delay. morgan hill getting into san jose. back to you. all right. thank you very much, mike. 608 right now new overnight. both directions of capital expressway in san jose reopen in the last hour following a deadly accident. it all happened before 11:00 last night near snell avenue, one woman died after being struck by a car. video appears to show personal belongings scattered across the intersection, and police say the driver remained at the scene. so far, they're not commenting on that investigation. we are. the new school year and some districts are now grappling with a serious cash shortage in san francisco. today, nearly 50,000 students will head back to class by this time next month. some of them may be learning their schools will be closing today in the bay's ginger conejero saab is live in san francisco this morning, and ginger, those concerns very unnerving for

families. that's right. good morning laura. i mean, you know, back to school very well as well as many parents. how exciting this time can be. but as you mentioned, unnerving because of this looming cloud. it's no secret that san francisco unified will announce a new school portfolio on september 18th. and that's just less than a month away. now, currently, sfusd has around 110 schools within the district, 13 early education schools, over 70 elementary schools, 13 middle schools, and 14 high schools. now, how many schools will be closed, relocated or realigned? that all remains a mystery at this point. i sat down with the superintendent of sfusd, doctor matt wayne, to talk about what the vision is for sfusd and why there are so little answers so far. we know people are hungry for information, but we need to make sure we're sharing accurate information that's based on what is going to be our real plan for
6:11 am
the future of sfusd. now, families have expressed concerns and made their cases for why their school should not be among those closed or changed. the district says they welcome the feedback, but they need to make these tough decisions now for a more stable tomorrow. the united educators of san francisco believe the district is not doing enough. the announcement that they would be releasing the list of schools in september is quite shocking, considering that we haven't even heard what the structure or vision for how many even schools sfusd would have in the future. it's about letting families understand this is not just about their child's experience in first grade. this is really about making sure that when as a district, we can serve them well in fifth grade and eighth grade through high school and setting ourselves up for long term success. now, superintendent wayne says the months leading up to today have been filled with community engagement and conversations to
6:12 am
understand what families value most. this is his take away. our community has said very clearly that educational equity needs to be considered, that we do not want to disproportionately impact any one community. educational equity very important for the families and teachers at malcolm x academy. usf will host those families at 8:00 this morning for their first day back at school. while the superintendent is expected to make his rounds at different campuses. also this morning, that's happening at eight and nine. we'll continue to cover the first day back here in san francisco. both on air and online at nbcbayarea.com. laura back to you. always such an active time of year. and of course, all these different concerns as well for parents. thanks, ginger, for the latest two decision 2024 and the democratic national convention, which is kicking off today in chicago. let's take a live look
6:13 am
at the windy city this morning. this is where this week, kamala harris will formally accept the democratic presidential nomination. protests, though, are also on the horizon even before that convention starts today in the bay's alice barr is live inside the united center, which is where the convention is happening, and anticipation is hitting a fever pitch. chris. yes, we are expecting a whole lot of energy and momentum inside this building when this thing kicks off tonight, we're going to hear the biggest speech of the night from president biden, certainly in a very different role than he'd anticipated just a few weeks ago for this convention. he is certainly going to get a lot of tributes to his legacy as he passes the torch and endorses his vice president. as you noted, there are also protests going on outside, and between that and the new nominee, who's going to be formally accepting her party's nomination? comparisons are unavoidable to the 1968 democratic national convention here in chicago. but
6:14 am
one historian tells me there are key limits to that comparison. vice president kamala harris is in chicago as the democratic national convention kicks off tonight, previewing her focus over the weekend in a pennsylvania bus tour. when you know what you stand for, you know what to fight for. the vice president looking to define herself to the american people this week, in the still early days of her campaign, the candidate change up xin bao now and the protesters against the war in gaza gathering in chicago, calling comparisons to the windy city's 1968 democratic convention. it's impossible not to make that connection in your head, but northwestern university history professor kevin boyle says while that race was framed by deep divisions over the vietnam war, this is going to be a convention of profound unity. unity inside and de-escalation training outside, preparing chicago police to
6:15 am
avoid the violent clashes of 68. when president lyndon johnson stepped aside during the primary season, much earlier than president biden's move that led to vice president harris's unprecedented path to the nomination. do you think there's any credence to the people that are criticizing her for having been selected and not elected? there is no rule that says that there has to be an open primary process under these circumstances. so they followed their rules inside the party. that's the way it works as new national polls show harris picking up a narrow lead. former president trump is set to visit four swing states this week, working to counteract any post-convention bump for the democratic ticket. ahead this morning on today, we take a look at preview at what to expect at this week's democratic national convention. and our scott mcgrew

is going one on one with nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston to talk about what to expect as the dnc plays out in chicago over the next few days, and that's coming up less than 30 minutes in, right here on today in the bay. developing right now on the east coast, many places dealing with treacherous conditions as the eye of hurricane ernesto churns towards eastern canada this morning, it is once again a category one storm, and it's triggered life threatening rip currents. at least two people drowned in south carolina and in north carolina. emergency crews performed nearly 30 ocean rescues. connecticut, meantime, saw torrential rain and flash flooding, and more than 80 million americans remain at risk for extreme weather, rain, wind and flooding. they're seeing it all. let's check in with forecaster cinthia pimentel. she's got a look at where ernesto is heading now. yeah. as you said it, there it is. heading into parts of eastern canada. eventually making it into the northern atlantic. but really extreme is the word to use as we kick off this new

one of the best in more than a year. head of the fed jay powell speaks at jackson hole, wyoming, on friday of this week. shares in big grocery stores. this is walmart. that's kroger. largely unchanged after kamala harris floated her idea of a federal ban on price gouging. she did that friday in a speech laying out some of her economic plans. there's no federal price gouging law currently. california has one, but it's not clear grocery stores are gouging you. if you look at the revenue a company like walmart brings in, or kroger and you compare it to the profits, it's like a 2 to 3% difference. we would consider that to be pretty razor thin as far as profits, the problem isn't your grocery store, it's the suppliers. and harris says she will go after them. trump over the weekend, meantime, once again talked about slapping huge tariffs on goods at stores like
6:22 am
walmart. and once again, he got it wrong. remember, if an american buyer like walmart buys chinese made goods. walmart and its customers pay the tariff. americans pay the tariff. here's trump getting it backwards. a tariff is a tax on a foreign country. that's the way it is. whether you like it or not. a lot of people like to say, oh, it's a tax on us. no, no, no, it's a tax on a foreign country. it's a tax on a country that's ripping us off and stealing our jobs. and it's a tax that doesn't affect our country. all right. not to belabor the point, but if china puts a tariff on american wheat, chinese definitely pay the tariffs. if america puts a tariff on chinese made pickle balls, americans pay the tariff a california law that would have increased protections for children online got stuck in the courts friday, with the ninth circuit saying laws that forced high tech companies to

for you, help you plan this manic monday around the bay. we are seeing temperatures by noon in some mild territory. 70s there. maybe you can take lunch outside to kind of get you in the spirit of what is ahead. warmer temperatures today will be slightly warmer than what we had yesterday, and definitely from the saturday that we had some gloomy conditions at times mid 80s for santa rosa, 86 in concord, we'll do 82 in los gatos, and we'll continue those upper 60s and breezy throughout the peninsula. here is the changes ahead. very interesting. our first half of the week in antioch is actually going to start to warm up. tuesday will be the warmest day. not so much change for wednesday. but then look at that drop as we go on into thursday and friday. we're tracking a system that's dropping down along the california coast. that could bring some breezier changes about that cloud cover. so stay tuned for that. definitely some fall kind of wardrobe throughout the bay area. but then behind that, our models are looking at a bit of a warming trend as we go through the weekend and into next week. san francisco changes
6:27 am
will be mild. they're into the low 70s through downtown tomorrow, and then the 60s and breezy for the second half of the week. our inland seven-day forecast 80 to 90 back down into the 80s and possibly some 70s, but not too bad. mike. we had an early slowing out of richmond. yeah we did. we had a little more slowing than we typically see about early, early in the 5:00 hour out of richmond. so we kept checking, keeping tabs on the toll plaza there. the backup is officially there, and it's slow across the span. no incidents reported, so i think it's a good volume of traffic. remember, there is a school district right here, west contra costa, that does start today, but it looks like more traffic is actually heading through the area. that might be because much of contra costa county did start earlier in the last couple of weeks. we're looking at a slower drive for highway four, an issue a disabled vehicle on 680, but no major issues. most of the folks out of concord are taking that. 242 cut down toward walnut creek. the early slowdown off the castro valley y looks like it did clear when that debris

tonight. let's talk briefly for a moment, larry, if we could about israel, secretary of state antony blinken, right now meeting with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. obviously, the number one beneficiary of a cease fire would be the palestinian civilians. but if they negotiated a cease fire in the next couple of days, even the next few hours, that would help heal a rift in american politics, particularly in the democratic party. yeah, this would release a lot of tension for the far left of the democratic party. we're expecting demonstrations in chicago over the next few days. and if for some reason, some way, somehow they can come to some agreement, yes, this will let a lot of hot air out of that balloon. but but it's a tough one, scott. they've been going back and forth for months, maybe more than a year, almost a year, i should say. and they haven't found the formula. one side or the other is always found it difficult to go along that last inch. so we're going to see if blinken can can pull that rabbit out of the hat tonight. all right. well, nbc bay area political consultant larry gerston, i'm sure we'll be

talk about what the day has ahead and the warmer temperatures for tomorrow coming up. mike, you are still tracking a crash and slowing in san jose. we had a couple of crashes and then we had just one remaining. it was in lanes. i've just seen the speed sensors. north 101, just passing bernal and heading up toward the split with 85. they're starting to improve. they may have removed the last of the vehicles from the scene. no major injuries reported, but this was a delay. holding traffic up from getting into san jose out of morgan hill, passing coyote creek golf course. there we are looking at a light slowdown here on 101 north oakland road, heading up past the airport. this may build as more folks are coming in out of that portion of the split for 101 northbound. now we have a slowdown developing here. an earlier crash as you're approaching alvarado. niles has just cleared from the blotter. we have a build for the east bay, but no surprises. and now we're looking ahead. we have events over here in oakland for the coliseum. the a's play tonight and the giants play tonight in the city. so keep

those two activities in mind. back to you. good to know. thank you very much mike. new data shedding some new light on making it in the bay. and the stark difference between the cost of renting or home buying in the bay area. national data from zillow and apartment list indicates it now cost an average of $352,000 to buy a home, which is a few thousand more than renting a home for 20 years. at $338,000. right now in the san francisco metro area, the average home costs $1.2 million. in comparison, it costs $609,000 to rent a home for 20 years, almost twice the cost. san jose, meantime, has the dubious distinction of having the highest price to rent ratio in the entire country. the median home price is $1.5 million. that's compared to 750,000 for 20 years of rent. home prices throughout california are at record highs. new this morning, schools across the country are still dealing with record high rates of absenteeism more than a

year after the pandemic. new data collected by stanford indicates that nearly 25% of students were chronically absent in the 2023 school year. that means missing at least 10% of total school days in oakland, chronic absenteeism was already high before the pandemic. it was 29%, but it skyrocketed to 53% across district and charter schools last year. meanwhile, home for oakland a's fans will soon be no more next season. of course, as you likely know, they are playing in sacramento. i know the tradition is over. over the weekend, it allowed giants and a's fans to soak in one very last bay bridge series. the coliseum saw some season high crowds this weekend as nearly 40,000 fans attended each of the two games. for many, it was understandably emotional, with a lot of former players also on hand. yesterday's last game had some extra inning drama with the score tied at one and went into
6:48 am
extra innings. then in the 10th, back to back home runs gave the giants a lead. they would not give up the giants won the game 4 to 2, splitting the final series at one game apiece. all new this morning? get ready for a new chapter in a decades long dog eat dog rivalry on labor da, san jose's joey chestnut will once again face takeru kobayashi, this time in his netflix special hot dog eating event. kobayashi has not competed in five years, and he's coming out of retirement to settle this. beef chestnut is the current world record holder with 76 hot dogs in ten minutes. he's still the king of nathan's hot dog eating contest on the 4th of july, even if he wasn't allowed to take part. this year due to sponsorship conflicts, he tells the today show this morning that left him hungry to prove he's still top dog. i'm going to be eating hot dogs on labor day like never before, and i'm going to be breaking records and dude, it's maybe i'll make

6:51 am
towards dublin, and will continue those upper 80s into parts of the north bay. we'll drop those temperatures a little bit for our wednesday and then get ready for some changes ahead. we're going to have two seasons in one week. starting off with summer and then getting into a little bit of a more fall winter like pattern as we go on into late thursday and friday. a system is dropping in from the north, but this is going to do is we're going to feel the breeze kick up. we're going to notice some more cloudy skies and even track the possibility of getting some rain up into the north bay and the northern part of the state. so we'll watch as the models kind of put themselves together here through the week. our inland. seven day forecast will go from summer into the upper 80s and 90s to start off the week, and then back into some cool 80s and possibly some upper 70s by friday and the weekend will trend warmer once again. san francisco not so much change. there 60s to some low 70s overall, not a bad forecast for the city by the bay. now. mike
6:52 am
you are checking up on the bay bridge. yeah, and we knew it was going to build, but i just want to check if it was on pace. nothing unusual at this point in the commute. it did start a little bit earlier today, and we're watching to see if that trends for the next couple of weeks. as folks come back online. for the majority of schools around the bay area already. but this week, i think the remainder will come back online. we're looking at westbound highway four, holding steady with the build coming out of pittsburgh and bay point. concord is the slowest drive as far as westbound commute. we're starting to kind of ease up to our normal build over at richmond. some folks did get a little early, start heading toward that bridge and slowing through berkeley down toward the bay bridge as well. we now see these sensors start to slow across the san mateo bridge. this is a little more slowing than we typically see. so again, we're watching those trends in the tri-valley and in contra costa county, where it's still not at a half hour. so this vasco drive actually isn't as bad as it sometimes is on a monday. we'll keep tracking back to you. all right. thank you very much. well happening now, east bay regional parks are among those warning people that
