tim walz. and then thursday, the main event, kamala harris will formally accept her party's nomination. overnight, hundreds of protesters marched through the streets of show preparing to make their voices heard all week long. >> we have it all covered for you. let's start with peter alexander in chicago for us. hi, peter, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, hoda, good morning to both of you from here inside the united center where the ceremonial roll call begins hours from now. for democrats, this is the start of a week-long convention. it looked like it would be defined by discord and doubt. instead, the party arrives here energized and enthusiastic about its new nominee. this morning vice president harris is preparing to accept her party's nomination. but not before democrats first honor president biden tonight. punctuated sources tell nbc

news, by a pass the torch moment, but in the sign of lingering divisions within the democratic party the convention is embracing protests with the israel-hamas war. thousands of demonstrators gathering. a protester rushing the stage at a dnc event. the new democratic ticket touring pennsylvania sunday. >> when you know what you stand for, you know what to fight for. >> reporter: harris and governor tim walz revealing their new campaign buses and responding to president trump's latest personal attacks. >> anybody that was about beating down other people is a coward. >> reporter: mr. trump in the late earlier bashing democratic policies as fascist. calling immigrants who enter the u.s. illegal savage monsters and lashing out at his rival, insulting harris' appearance. >> they said, no, her biggest advantage is that she's a beautiful woman.
7:06 am
i'm going, huh, i never thought of that. i'm better looking than she is. >> reporter: trump ally lindsey graham warning the former president should focus on poll policy, not personal swipes. >> donald trump, the provocateur, the showman may not win this election. >> reporter: for now trump's attacks are still drawing headlines, including this moment from an event last week with mr. trump saying that gop mega donor's congressional medal of freedom is better than a medal of honor. >> it is actually must better because everyone gets the congressional medal of honor. they're either in really bad shape or they're dead. she gets it and she's a healthy, beautiful, woman. that's right. >> reporter: mr. trump addressing the comments in a new interview. >> when you get the congressional medal of honor, i always consider that the ultimate, but it is a painful thing to get. >> reporter: it comes as new
7:07 am
polls show a very tight race with harris narrowly leading trump among likely voters nationwide, though still within the margin of error, and they're neck and neck in the key battleground states. >> i'd very much consider us the underdog. we have a lot of work to do to earn the vote of the american people. >> reporter: and looking ahead to this week, the dnc will have a series of celebrity hosts here, including kerry washington and mindy kaling. this is not the convention that president biden had planned where he was initially expecting to accept his party's nomination on thursday night while detailing his plans for a second term, still in the words of one party insider, he is expected to receive a thunderous ovation tonight where some of the words from his recent oval office address abandoning his own reelection bid like history is in your hands, are expected to be part of the visual backdrop here, savannah. >> peter, thank you, and starting with hallie jackson, president biden will get that thunderous ovation in the hall, but conventions are never about
7:08 am
just who's watching in the hall, but who's watching from home. biden is not popular, so they want to give him a proper sendoff, but they want to thread that needle that kamala harris actually represented change. how are they going to do that? >> with a lot of support, with a big show of unity in the room, savannah, this is not president biden's convention, but tonight it will be his moment. it's a really interesting dynamic here because keep in mind, the audience there, many democrats had either pressured the president publicly or privately to step aside, to come off the ticket. there's a lot of symbolism in what's being described as a pass the torch moment tonight in this big show of unity that the democratic party, despite what you described, savannah, of the lack of popularity for president biden nationally as compared to what we're seeing in the polling for vice president harris, democrats want to show they have a united front, that they can move forward together and the moment to watch, i think, is going to be when president biden and vice president harris are expected to share the stage later on tonight, savannah. >> let's talk about the state of the race, kamala harris is now leading in many battleground
7:09 am
polls, although within that margin of error. she's still calling herself an underdog in the race. what are the facts? what's the dynamic? >> the state of play here, the goals of this convention week, first goal is to introduce vice president harris not as vice president but as the presidential nominee, as one campaign source put it to me, the function of this week is to define her. the other big goal here is to try to capture and keep momentum moving forward. democrats i've spoken with, there's some excitement, they're feeling happy, feeling a lot of energy at this convention and the polling helps. you heard about that national polling out this weekend showing harris gaining ground on former president trump. she leads him on the issue of, for example, abortion access, look for that to be in the spotlight tonight, you've got three women expected to share personal stories about the impact of reproductive rights, but kamala harris trails former president trump on the issues of who people trust to handle the economy and immigration, and we know, savannah, we've talked about this a lot, those are the two biggest drivers for folks
7:10 am
heading to the polls come november, also watch for some of those protests to potentially have an impact on the overall vibe of the dnc as well, depending how big they get. >> let's talk about former president trump, very, very busy week on the campaign trail, he's getting advice from allies like lindsey graham or nikki haley saying, look, stay on the message, get off personal attacks and talk about policy. that's the way to win. >> that's not what he's doing, savannah, that's where you're seeing this frustration from trump allies, you mentioned some of them publicly. a lot of them want him to focus on policy, to draw that contrast on issues where he leads, like the economy, like immigration, on what they see as kamala harris' too liberal record in the eyes of republicans but instead the former president is going after her appearance, her intelligence, her background. he's making controversial comments about medal of honor winners. this is not the reset moment that people in his orbit want to see, at least not right now and it comes as he's heading into
7:11 am
the busiest weak of his campaign so far politically. he and his running mate are also trying to define harris, savannah, and obviously a different way than democrats are trying to do. >> lots to cover this week, hallie, thank you, we'll see you in chicago as well. nbc news will bring live this w convention coverage of this week's . get started at 10:00 eastern here on nbc and, of cour democratic convention, includin streaming on nbc news now. tonight's speech from president biden, 10:00 eastern here on another major story this morning. we're talking about the weather. nbc, and streaming on "nbc news now." another major story this morning, we're talking about the strong weekend storms pounded weather, strong weekend storms heavy downpours here in the northeast overnight.ast coast, including heavy downpours here in the northeast overnight. they've caused flooding, road they've caused some flooding, closures, even road closures. mud slides. even mudslides. meantime, ernesto is meantime, ernesto is still sti churning on atlantic beach churning up dangerous surf on e. nbc's george the atlantic beaches, george su solis joins us from danbury, connecticut. >> reporter: this is the power s now from hard-hit danbury, connecticut. >> reporter: this is the power of a one in 1,000-year flood of a one in one thousand year . you can se flood.e this it's completely washed away dows here onto the road, and check
