getting a chance to tee off alongside adam sandler as an extra in the sequel. it's tuesday, august 20th, "early today" starts right now. and good morning. i'm richard lui. it was an emotional night one for the democratic national convention. the night was full of tributes to outgoing president joe biden, who was the keynote speaker, as he celebrated his accomplishments and praised his haven't. the crowd kept erupting into chants of "we love you joe", and "thank you, joe". >> thank you, kamala. folks. >> the president wrapped up his speech by saying he would be the best volunteer the harris campaign had ever seen. nbc's alice barr joins us from chicago. good morning to you. the theme of night one of the convention seems certainly to be

celebrating joe biden. >> reporter: it absolutely was. good morning, richard. a lot of emotional tributes to president biden, as he passes the torch to his vice president. the nominee herself even made a surprise appearance last night. vice president kamala harris will officially accept her party's nomination thursday night. but she briefly spoke last night to celebrate president biden. she said the country is forever grateful to him for his historic leadership. and when president biden gave his keynote address, he thanked the american people and said he is optimistic about what's to come. >> i hope you know how grateful i am to all of you. i can honestly say, and i mean this from the, i give you my word as a biden. i'm honestly more optimistic about the future than i was when i was elected as a 29-year-old united states senator. i mean it. lady michelle obama. it is a bold vision for america's future. >> thank you for that wrap-up. you can catch our full coverage of night two of the democratic convention that starts at 4:00 p.m. eastern on nbc news now. the dnc got off to a bit of a delayed start in part because of thousands of protesters a few blocks away. police tell our chicago station that four people were arrested after protesters tore down part of a barrier. aside from that clash with officers, the demonstrations were largely peaceful. an estimated 6,000 people marched through chicago's west side, demanding vice president harris commit to a cease-fire in gaza and an end to the united states' support of israel. protesters say if those demands are not met, the democrats cannot count on their votes. for the first time, u.s. intelligence officials are confirming iran was behind recent attempts to hack the trump campaign. the former president's campaign

first accused iran of hacking earlier this month. federal officials say iran sees both campaigns as an important target, accusing iran of increasingly aggressive activity this election cycle, including pfishing e-mails sent to long-time trump allies like roger stone. iran's u.n. mission denies those allegations. the state department says that israel has accepted a new cease-fire proposal. bri blinken saying the onus is on hamas to finalize details. it's not clear what's actually in this proposal. but hamas previously accused israel of adding unacceptable new conditions, including no full withdrawal from gaza. talks are set to later this week, but hamas said its representatives will not attend. right now, there's an urgent search under way this morning after a luxury yacht sank offer

t off the coast of sicily. 15 people were rescued. at least one person is dead. six people were missing, americans among those. for the latest, let's go straight to claudio lavanga, who is live in rome with the very latest. what do we know? >> reporter: good morning, richard. well, the search for the six people who are still missing after that tragedy yesterday resumed early this morning, but i spoke to the director of the civil protection agency in sicily who confirmed their identities. they are mike lynch, who is a british tech entrepreneur, who's being branded on uk media as the british bill gates, his 18-year-old daughter also a lawyer, based in new york. chris morbilo and his wife and jonathan bloomer, an international chairman at morgan stanley and his wife. now, while divers are still looking for their bodies at this point, the authorities are asking questions on how is it

possible that a 183-foot super yacht just overturned and sank in a matter of minutes. now eyewitnesses told italian media that at about 5:00 in the morning on monday, a massive storm and waterspouts battered the area where the yacht was anchored, very close to the coast of sicily. close to palermo, and then, when the storm passed a few minutes later, the boat simply was gone. now 15 people were rescued by another yacht that was anchored nearby, including a british mother and a 1-year-old, her 1-year-old baby. she said they were just sleeping in the cabin when all of a sudden the boat overturned, and they found themselves in the water. in the meantime, divers continue to search for the bodies of the six missing, including chris mobilo, a lawyer and his wife. >> thank you for the latest on that breaking story. two teenagers now charged with murder in the killing of

general hospital actor johnny wactor. robert barselo and sergio estrada were charged with murder and grand theft. one faces additional charge. wactor was gunned down in may after interrupting the theft of his car's catalytic converter. former congressman george santos has pleaded guilty to two counts of fraud. he was found to have defrauded voters in the 2020 new york state race where he largely fabricated his own back story. our ryan noebels was in the courtroom. >> reporter: former congressman george santos speaking to a crowd of supporters outside his guilty plea. >> i understand there are legal consequences for my actions. and i accept them fully. >> reporter: the embattled republican who became the first sitting member of congress to be

booted by office by liihis own colleagues in more than 20 years pleaded guilty to two charges. wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. this after he was indicted on dozens of charges. throughout his legal woes, he defiantly said he was the victim of political prosecution. >> it's clear to me now that i allowed ambition to cloud my judgment, leading me to make decisions that were unethical. >> george santos stood in the courthouse right behind me and finally, under oath, told the truth. >> reporter: a virtual unknown, santos rode a republican wave into office in 2022, with a resume that was built on lies. he bragged about cutting million dollar business deals that didn't exist and boasted about being a star volleyball player, a sport he never played. a scathing house ethics report accused him of deceiving his donors and using campaign cash to fund his lavish lifestyle. congressman, what do you say to

your constituents? >> excuse me. you guys got to get out of my way. >> reporter: but despite the embarrassing public spectacle, santos refused to go away quietly. he was active on social media and sold hundreds of personalized videos to fans on cameo. >> let's talk about botox for a second. >> reporter: he is scheduled to be sentenced in fbiebruary and could face up to 22 years behind bars. we're going to turn to the catastrophic flood emergency in the northeast, as heavy rain battered new jersey, new york, and connecticut. at least three people died, including two in the town of oxford, connecticut, after being swept away by raging floodwaters. some 10 inches of rain fell in just 12 hours there, destroying roads and bridges and submerging cars. and in neighboring danbury, homes and businesses were threatened by mudslides. first responders rescuing more than 100 people. >> our hearts go out to those that lost their lives.

well, markets are on their longest win streak of the year right now. the nasdaqjumping nearly 250 points yesterday. up for the eighth day in a row. but there are warning signs in the economy, as the fed weighs cutting interest rates. cnbc's arabile gumede joins us for the details on that. good morning, arabile. what new week brings us. >> yes, so certainly a big week. in fact when you consider that the jackson hole symposium is slated to start this week, particularly on thursday, you're expecting to hear from fed chair jerome powell with regards to the interest rate cutting cycle and when that begins and how that is expected to flow and what it is that they will be focussing on. on the other side of this, you have the new york fed that put out a survey that showed how consumers are seeing their employment faring. that is where the risks now lie. no longer so much on the inflation side but certainly on

the jobs market. and according to the fed survey, a lot more people are anticipating to see job cuts or no longer having a job then over the next couple months. that's actually risen, 4.4% is the number now versus the 3.9% figure we saw previously. ultimately, what that means is if they believe they're not going to have a job in future, they're going to spend less. spending less, ultimately means that the growth of the u.s. economy slows down. so that is factor that they definitely do not want to see come forward, but a lot more of the data is still anticipated to come through. that might give a little bit more stactbility to the overall numbers. i want to give you a sense of having to pay close to, pay $1.5 million and $500,000 in civil penalties. all of that because they failed to disclose billions of dollars
