foothills. an update where containment stands this morning. let me ask you, are you ready to elect kamala harris and tim walz, president and vice president of united states, passing the torch, president biden paving the way for his vice president ahead of the november election. we are in chicago with the heartfelt endorsement for kamala harris for president and a look at what's on tap for night two of the dnc. plus, a bart train evacuated when smoke fills the cabin. a look at video riders inside the train as they were forced to leave. this is today in the bay and this is tuesday morning. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. we'll get a look at what's happening with those roads coming up in just a bit with mike. but first cinthia pimentel in for kerry this morning with a look at that forecast. good morning. i think it's going to be a nice summer
5:02 am
day before some major changes for the second half of the week. good morning. up in the north bay where it is a little bit chillier. low 50s, mid 50s through san francisco and out towards livermore. 60s down here in the south bay, mostly clear night for our early start to this commute. as we go throughout the day. a nice warm summer tuesday here in the bay area. upper 60s half moon bay to upper 70s for oakland and we'll see our valleys get into the upper 80s and a few spots getting into the 90s such as concord, 80 degrees out in santa cruz. it will turn breezy. we've gotten used to this pattern in the last couple of days, so enjoy this nice calm weather while we have it, because at the end of the week we're talking major changes, major changes in the form of a chance of rain. we'll talk about that. but mike, you've been tracking some work on the golden gate bridge. yeah, well, we think we get in early, but some folks are still working, are actually already at work and moving across that golden gate bridge. the crew getting ready to move that center divide are clearing cones from overnight work. we saw that camera clear with the crew that was heading north, but
5:03 am
approaching the area looks like those typical traffic breaks as they start to clear some of the overnight road work. so shifts are changing here. we expect this approaching the area off the marina, off the marina. as we look at the rest of the bay, a smooth flow through contra costa county, the early drive coming across carquinez and benicia bridges. there may be some activity. i heard about an earlier traffic break, 101 at 92 from an earlier crash. i'll follow up on that speed. sensors are green. back to you. all right. sounds good. we'll check back with you. developing now. firefighters still at the scene of a string of late night fires that left them scrambling. this is actually a live look at the scene. it's centered along quimby road in the san jose foothills. on the way towards the top of mount hamilton. the flames burned more than 30 acres, and teams this morning are still out there monitoring for hotspots this morning. there are still a lot of unanswered questions. our bob redell is at the scene. he'll join us with a live report in our next half hour. well, bart is hoping for a much smoother ride this morning. this is after a scare for some
5:04 am
riders that started with panic and led to long delays during the evening commute. now, an equipment failure forced passengers of one of those trains to jump onto the tracks. some documented that drama with their cell phones today in the bay's ginger conejero saab live for us this morning and ginger, any time you hear passengers had to jump onto the tracks, that is something to be scared about. do riders have anything to be concerned about this morning? well, it doesn't seem so. marcus, good morning to you. service resumed as early as yesterday afternoon, but as you mentioned, for those passengers who saw and experienced this incident, it was enough to take matters into their own hands. should we go? i don't know, evacuate the smoke. hey, everybody, this. i'm on. i'm on. there you can hear the confusion and panic some passengers had while evacuating this richmond bound bart train at the macarthur station yesterday. you can see them jumping off of the train because of smoke coming
5:05 am
from one of the cars. now, the passenger who pulled the emergency lever to open the train door said she had to think and act fast. with smoke making its way into the train. i thought it was going to blow up. that's that was the worst thing because it was the popping that i could continue to hear, the popping and the smelling of the smoke, seeing the smoke outside of the window of the train. so we were then it started getting frantic. well, this is the latest incident for bart. that's leaving some riders with mixed feelings before hopping on the next train. just last week, multiple bart stations shut down due to a network outage that caused delays between stations and last month, a fire at a critical switching center at the 12th street station in oakland caused delays as well. now, fortunately, bart says that there were no injuries from yesterday's incident in san francisco, ginger conejero saab, today in the bay. glad to hear that, but still very scary moment. all right, ginger, thank

you. the democratic national convention starts with a sendoff of sorts in chicago. we have a look live inside the united center, where president biden last night took stage making his case that vice president kamala harris is the one to carry the torch. the president was greeted by an ovation lasting nearly five minutes today in the bay's damian trujillo was there to witness it all. he has a closer look at a historic night in chicago and what is on tap for day two. it will be another big night tonight. michelle obama will hit the stage, and then it will be the 44th president of the united states. her husband, barack obama. last night was about joe. chants of thank you, joe boomed across the arena here in chicago, the president came to hand over the reins of the democratic party to vice president kamala harris. harris made a surprise appearance on the big stage last night to thank the president and to urge people to get out and organize. former first lady and secretary of state hillary clinton was also here to thank the president
5:07 am
and take some jabs at donald trump. but the night was about joe biden taking the stage just before 1030 last night, thanking the delegates and passing the torch to a new generation are you ready to vote for democracy and for america? let me ask you, are you ready to elect kamala harris and tim walz president, vice president, united states? there are still three days left of this convention and more heavy hitters are on the way, culminating thursday night when kamala harris officially accepts the nomination. crews spent the night cleaning the arena and preparing for tonight, the big night. day two of the democratic convention in chicago. we're inside the united center. i'm damian trujillo, nbc bay area news. and we'll look forward to your continued coverage. damian. well, president biden not sticking around for the rest of the dnc. in fact, he's actually waking up this morning in california air force one touched down about three hours ago at santa barbara airport in

southern california. he and the first lady are planning to spend the rest of this week on vacation in santa barbara county. they're staying in santa ynez and the san luis obispo tribune reports the faa is issuing temporary flight restrictions through sunday around santa ynez airport. that's when the bidens are scheduled to return to delaware and another live look inside where the dnc is being held in the convention. this is where it is not just democrats tuning in to the dnc. republicans are as well. we spoke with john dennis. he's the chairman of the san francisco republican party, and he calls this a pivotal moment for harris's campaign. you know, if she doesn't get active, if she doesn't lay out policy, if she doesn't start doing media appearances, she runs the risk of donald trump defining and the entire narrative for the rest of the election. vice president harris will get a bump coming out of the convention. it will go sort of her way through labor day through next week, and then the real game starts after labor
5:09 am
day. ahead this morning on today, our dnc coverage continues. it will include more highlights of president biden's appearance and the mood of the convention ahead of night two. well, perhaps a defining moment in the war in gaza, u.s. secretary of state antony blinken says israel is accepting a new cease fire proposal. he goes on to say the onus is now on hamas to finalize the details. hamas has previously refused to play ball, accusing israel of adding unacceptable new conditions, including no full withdrawal from gaza. it's still not clear what this proposal contains, but talks are expected to resume in egypt later this week. so far without hamas taking part. 508 for you, this morning, as we take a live look out in walnut creek, folks on the road getting ready for the day so they already know what it feels like outside if you don't. well, stick around because cinthia pimentel has a look at what we can expect starting out nice and pleasant this morning. yeah, nice and pleasant. maybe rolling down the

window a little bit to feel that nice summer breeze. 63 to start our day out there along 680. and as we go throughout the morning, we'll get into some comfortable 70s into the mid morning hours 80s as we go on into lunchtime. so it could be a little warm as you step out and take that midday break. we'll get into the upper 80s later on this afternoon. as far as our coast. we'll start with some few patchy clouds here and there in the low 50s, and then get into some upper 60s later on this afternoon. that will be a gorgeous day out there. we are tracking changes though, and we'll talk about that coming up in a few minutes. but mike, you're helping people get out the road this morning with cheaper gas. yeah, we're back in the top ten list over the weekend. san jose actually specifically made it into the ten best list for our gas prices in the state. three. 75 at costco on evergreen loop in marin county. the best we find is at 389 at the elite gas and mart on river street. that's in san rafael and alameda county. lists fremont with the lowest at 395 at vargas on grimmer. we get all these updates from around
5:11 am
the bay here@gasbuddy.com. through all of you, if you're like me, you're seeing this creep up a couple cents at those local stations. as we look at the roadways, we want to follow up. i want to follow up in san mateo. there was a second traffic break west 92, getting off of that san mateo bridge onto southbound 101. they just got word that all lanes cleared without incident. great news. there was an earlier motorcycle crash, no injuries reported. and again, all lanes cleared. getting toward the bay bridge, a smooth flow of traffic. there's still a little slowing out of san francisco. north 101 toward the golden gate bridge. your typical crews are clearing there. back to you. thanks, mike. it's 510 right now. protecting children with food allergies. coming up next on today in the bay. simple steps you can take to make sure they eat safely at school. eight straight days of wins on wall street and a reminder of the danger of batteries in vehicles. plus, think you're the next shooter? mcgavin. well, we're going to explain how people in one state are about to get a chance to tee off against happy gilmore. stick around

of the week we'll talk about the details coming up. and i had told you the traffic break in the incident cleared west 92 at 101, but west 92. right there i see flashing lights. they've been there for a few minutes. no incidents reported. looks like it's in the service lane on the right, but we'll follow up. i'll track those sensors. we'll show you what's going on. a couple. well good morning. very happy tuesday to you. markets had another win their eighth in a row. let's take a look at the board hog that is harley davidson. it is the latest company to get rid of its d e i program under pressure from the right. that's diversity equality inclusion. alaska airlines time is up for the doj to step in and stop a merger with hawaiian airlines. and they didn't. so that's a good sign for alaska. united airlines predicting its busiest labor day in years. more than 3 million passengers. lots of people flying. one pundit pointing out in this economy, people are leaving airport to airport. you may have heard

about that terrible boat wreck in sicily, a baby saved from the water, but a lot of people missing after a sudden storm like mike lynch, often called the bill gates of britain. lynch had just found out he was not guilty in a san francisco court of business fraud. hewlett-packard had accused lynch of ripping them off in an $11 billion deal to buy his company. hp said lynch messed with the financials to overvalue it. several news agencies, including the telegraph and bloomberg, say lynch and the 11 other passengers were on the superyacht to celebrate his victory in court. american intelligence agencies say it indeed was iran that hacked the trump campaign. those hackers also tried unsuccessfully to get into the harris campaign, not the first time foreign hackers have tried to interfere. the last time 13 american intelligence agencies blamed the russians. but trump famously announced in helsinki during a press conference with putin he

believed putin's word that the russians didn't do it and not u.s. intelligence. lastly, marcus and laura, you saw that huge truck fire that shut down both directions of 80. yesterday, it was a tesla battery powered truck burned to the ground. i spoke with a battery expert yesterday who reminds us that batteries are a special fire danger. most of these batteries bring their own oxygen to the party. they don't need the oxygen from the air. so they can kind of go into something called thermal. thermal. thermal runaway. so thermal runaway is when the heat of the fire is sustaining more battery fire. and that causes real that company is building warehouses to hold batteries for companies that are making things. we saw that down in san diego. there was a warehouse fire with batteries. and it gets huge. and at some point the firefighters just have to back away and say, let it burn. i wonder what their insurance is like. oh my goodness, i can't even imagine. me neither. all right. thank you scott. you bet. well, new this morning as parents return to packing the

school lunches for their children, uncle sam is reminding everyone about the importance of protecting children with food allergies. the usda says that 1 in 13 children have food allergies. the nine leading causes are milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans, and sesame. of course, children with allergies should strictly avoid the foods and parents should prepare an allergic child's lunch first, so there's cross-contamination with other lunchtime meals. read the ingredient label. i know that all of us go to the grocery store, and we're familiar with our products, but it's important to read those labels, especially when you're cooking for children with food allergies. because guess what? ingredients can change over time. the usda also says it's a good idea to remind your children not to share snacks with other kids at schoo. trending for you this morning. you know, sometimes a movie is such a classic that a remake is inevitable, even if it takes

nearly 30 years. it's about time. it is about time. i mean, i just couldn't get the ball in the hole. i wanted to, but i just couldn't do it. hey, what are you doing? oh, it really is a comedy. i promise. so, casting for happy gilmore two is underway right now in new jersey. you know, the original film you saw there starring adam sandler? he actually co-wrote the comedy about a failed hockey player turned golfer. well, if you just happen to travel to morristown, new jersey today, there is an open casting call for some extras. no acting or golf experience is required. a release date has not yet been announced, but sandler is partnering with netflix for that sequel. okay, if you happen to be new jersey, that's the main character happy gilmore. no acting or golf experience. exactly and adam sandler would admit that. yeah that's great. that's cool. yeah. classic. never. i don't know if it was called the classic on american movie channel, but yeah. no kidding. i think it's a classic. yeah. i don't know about staying inside. getting out to golf
5:20 am
would be a great thing. yeah, it's going to be. the golfers are going to be happy with me today. lots of sunshine, a lot of time to spend outdoors for everybody. we start our morning clear and dazzling stunning view of san francisco. we are not starting so much with the fog today because we're in of a clearing and warming pattern. we're going to do 86 for los gatos over on into east san jose and get slightly warmer as we go on into morgan hill and gilroy. i've got you at 92. we continue with those low 90s out towards east cocoa county. 92 in antioch. we'll do 87 in martinez and start to pull those numbers, get into some more microclimates as we get into hayward at 77 for today. we'll continue with upper 60s for daly city, to upper 70s for san mateo, and get into some low 80s as we get on into redwood city, now up into san francisco. we'll see a mix of upper 60s in the outer sunset to some low 70s downtown, and we'll continue with the warm weather up into the north bay. maybe it's a tuesday toast up in wine country. it will be very warm
5:21 am
out there, so remember to drink some water as well. 90 in ukiah and we'll do slightly cooler temperatures out in point reyes 69 degrees with that breeze coming in through the afternoon. speaking of breeze, it will turn actually quite gusty as we get on into the second half of the week. by thursday we see that cold front approaching dropping in from the north. so things are going to trend cooler and possibly the chance of showers as we get on into thursday and friday. so might want to start planning your wardrobe around that. i know we're in shorts and short sleeves today, but for the second half of the week, maybe a sweater weather kind of getting into that fall vibe. the chances of rain are there, but the models are still a mixed bag on who's going to get the most of it in the bay area. most of it is looking to trend further up into ukiah and the northern section of the state. but good news there for the weekend is that we're going to have some calmer and warmer weather ahead after we get through a little bit of a roller coaster through our workweek here, we'll do
5:22 am
upper 80s and some 90s for today, and then feel that cool down on into thursday and friday with the wind picking up too. and san francisco will notice a mild day in the city today before we drop down those temperatures back into the 60s and feel that ocean breeze later on in the week. mike, you're checking traffic on the san mateo bridge, but i also checked out that seven day and that seventh day monday next week. i don't know if i like that, so i'll watch to see if you have an update on that a little later on. we're looking over here toward the flashing lights. that's the update i'm giving you. west 92. no word on it from chp. what's going on? must be some service crew in the area there in the service lane, and there are fewer flashing lights. i think it may have been a crew doing some work overnight that might not be published in the grid. so you see a smooth flow sensors coming past that area on the flat section, no problem. up the incline or over toward the earlier crash that cleared 101 at 92, the dumbarton bridge, highway 84 to the south is moving nicely, and in fact 84 coming through into sunol out of
5:23 am
pleasanton and livermore is also moving very nicely. no major problems out of the altamont pass as we look at the south bay and the north bay, things are moving smoothly. but highway 37 just starting a little more slowing. that's less slowing than we saw yesterday. at this time, though, just the difference between tuesday, monday and tuesday. we'll see. tuesday should have a heavier volume back to you. all right. thanks, mike. it is 522 right now. much more news ahead. but first it's time to help us clear the shelters. take a look at cookie dough. a two year old akita inu mix. and he's available for adoption at the animal community center in milpitas. and for a full list of those pets up for adoption, you can point your phone there to the qr code on the screen. it'll take you right to our website to learn more about the adoption process, as well as donate to some of our bay area animal shelters. and if you're watching on your phone or you don't have your phone available right now, don't worry because you can just go to nbc bay area.com/clear the shelters. you'll find all e informationth

we're live at the scene with an update on containment and the latest on a possible cause. president biden, with a bittersweet speech last night at the democratic national convention. we'll bring you highlights. also breaking his silence. convicted killer scott peterson speaking out for the first time in two decades. his response to the recent push for a new trial. this is today in the bay good morning to you on this tuesday, i'm marcus washington, and i'm laura garcia. let's start out with a look at the forecast. looking good for this tuesday morning. forecaster cinthia pimentel is tracking what we can expect. yeah it's a beautiful look throughout our traffic. cameras around the bay area. clear skies. so we're seeing all of the early morning risers waking up with us and heading out the door. 63 in walnut creek will do 54 out through san francisco and low 60s calm winds down here for the south bay as we head out and take a look in. marin. busy 101

through the civic center. we'll get into the 80s there today, and some spots getting into the low 90s while we track right there in the middle of your screen. a chance for some summer showers as we go on through late week. we'll talk about who has the best chances and then we get into summer once again for the weekend. warm and dry so the weather will have you saying, oh, what? as well as what's going on in the san mateo bridge. what are we tracking? you know, we were tracking those flashing lights. 529 we saw them start to move across. so westbound looks like all lanes are clear and so is the shoulder. that's great news. no more distraction. and those speed sensors stayed green throughout the area as we went through the undocumented issue going on across the bridge. now san mateo, dumbarton bridges, bay bridge picking up the volume, of course, as you would imagine right about now, we should see more traffic flow. but highway 4 recovering from an earlier crash, getting into concord out of pittsburgh and bay point. that crash causing a slowdown over on the left side. combined with the build off the right side and through pittsburgh out of antioch. so we do have a slower drive right now
5:33 am
coming through that part of contra costa county. typical slowing highway 37. and again, there's a little build on the bay bridge. we'll check on that. coming up back to you. thank you mike. 532 right now. developing this morning in the south bay, it has been a long night for firefighters who are still at the scene where a series of fires started in the foothills certainly left them scrambling. today in the bay's bob redell live for us this morning. so, bob, can you tell us exactly where these fires were located? yeah, we're about nine miles up quimby road as as you drive the road, not nine miles as the crow flies, but as you drive up here into the east foothills. just be on your way to mount hamilton again in the east foothills of san jose, where you can see we've got a couple of tenders from cal fire here with their hoses up running up the hill. it's too dark to see, but the fire burned up to the right back right of my head here in the hillside. and they're out here to make sure this fire doesn't fire back up. but there are hotspots that don't flare back
5:34 am
up. fire started late yesterday evening, became visible for miles away on the valley floor, scorched 33 acres. at one point there were 115 people from cal fire and san jose fire fighting this. it gives you an idea just how big the response was to this fire. cal fire also called in one of their cal fire firehawks to drop lots of water on the fire. that's a helicopter. the fire activity is suppressed right now. the forward progress has been halted and the fire is 15% contained. we're using air and ground resources. we have well over 100 personnel all together at scene of the fire. and we're really fortunate we were able to utilize our aircraft. and we're still, as you were saying, we can still use them right now. we are given additional, permissions to use them at night so that definitely helped us to pull the fire down and put it out. one of the biggest challenges for the fire fighters out here, the steep
5:35 am
terrain. i don't know if you can tell, but we are on the side of a hill and then also the access these roads are very narrow. it's a narrow two lane road. we're actually in the right lane. and that's why you have the trucks here parked up as close as they can against the hillside. we did ask cal fire what the causes of these fires up here. and they said that is still under investigation. reporting live here in san jose. bob redell today in the bay. all right. concerning because anybody who looks at the hills, you see how dry it is up there. thanks bob, for the latest. well, now to decision 2024 and former president barack obama is among speakers expected tonight at the democratic national convention. scott mcgrew joins us now. current president biden kicking things off last night. yes he did. good morning to you. biden had two jobs. he did both very well. he spoke about his achievements, and they were many from the lower cost of insulin and other drugs to the inflation reduction act. the chips act and his second job going all in behind his replacement, kamala harris. it's been the honor of
5:36 am
my lifetime to serve as your president. i love the job, but i love my country more. i love my country more. and all this talk about how i'm angry at all those people who said i should step down. that's not true. if there was a third thing, biden had to do, it's something he's been doing all along warning american voters about the danger. he says donald trump poses to the future of democracy. democracy has prevailed. democracy. democracy has delivered. and now democracy must be preserved. there was a very nice moment after his speech was done, where he was greeted by the first lady. i'd like just to take a moment for that. i love. that. i love i

keep thinking of south pasadena brie ryan murphy there. the bidens are vacationing this morning in the santa barbara area. there was a voice vote last night to ceremonial nominate tim walz as vice president. he passed. kamala harris will accept her nomination in a speech on thursday. other speakers notably included alexandria ocasio-cortez. she got a lot of time for a person who is significantly to the left of biden and harris, and warriors coach steve kerr. here's coach kerr talking about the election ahead after the results are tallied. that night. we can, in the words of the great steph curry, we can tell donald trump night night time. outside the convention, protesters over the war in gaza, they broke through one line. not a single person, not thinking of 1968. here

including the chicago police. we continue to await word for secretary of state blinken. he's in egypt right now trying to get a deal on a cease fire from hamas. blinken says talks have reached a decisive moment. israel has accepted what they're calling a bridging proposal a temporary agreement to set out that set out by the u.s. urged hamas to do the same. we continue our coverage of the dnc tonight, just as we did with the week long rnc. tonight's speaker, a powerhouse. both obama's harris husband, possibly the first first gentleman in history, and illinois billionaire governor pritzker. laura. you're right. a big night ahead. thank you scott. new trouble this morning for oakland schools. teachers and parents plan to make their voices heard today after learning some students there were exposed to lead in the water. the district says it has tested more than 1000 faucets over the past few months, and it identified 186
5:39 am
fixtures with elevated levels of lead. district policy says those water sources should have immediately been taken out of service, but we spoke with one teacher at frick united academy of language. he says the school was never notified of the elevated lead levels until the first day of school last week, and that's even though public records show the testing was done back in april and students have been drinking water from those fountains. one of the fountains has 51 parts per billion of lead, which is an insane amount of lead for students. for children to be drinking from. and they have been doing that since april, including in summer school. he says the principal immediately covered the faucets when notified in a letter sent out by the district, says it did not communicate effectively about test results and fixes, adding it is putting systems in place to ensure lack of communication does not happen again. the pta at hillcrest school, alongside

she bought scott peterson's story. no new evidence in this one. it seems to be a counter message to that peacock docu series now, because of a change of venue, scott peterson was tried in san mateo county, and that is where the la innocence project has been making its case. we have been covering it for you. the judge did agree to a neutral lab to conduct dna testing on a piece of duct tape, found on laci peterson's clothing. i the day that she disappeared, and that is pending now. the judge said she would rule issue a ruling within 90 days. that hearing was just about five weeks ago. so we are within that window and we are waiting for it. if we hear anything, we will report it to you. laura. yes. most definitely. we've been covering this case. i've been covering it since it all happened. and for a closer look, watch our own online special. i sat down with two attorneys who've been tracking this case since 2002, along with our jodi hernandez. she interviewed scott peterson before authorities arrested him. watch our half hour special
