once again with some warmer temperatures ahead into next week too. but for now, let's go over to mike and see what's going on on the roads this tuesday. pretty calm here. the a little bit of late slowdown here that lasted in san jose has suddenly cleared up as far as those speed sensors go. it was just a couple minutes later than we typically see it stick around, but tuesday we're watching for any shifts, as so many schools have come back online after the last three weeks, there is more traffic coming up. we check the area. san martino in toward morgan hill. typical there for 101. the rest of the bay. no real surprises. a couple of incidents have popped up throughout the east bay. we'll check on those coming up. back to you. thank you very much, mike. developing right now. firefighters still at the scene of a string of late night fires that left them scrambling. this is a live look centered along quimby road in the foothills on the way towards the top of mount hamilton. new numbers just into our newsroom from cal fire shows it is now 25% contained. the flames burned more than 30 acres, and teams this morning are still monitoring for hotspots this

morning. there is still a lot of unanswered questions. our bob redell is at the scene gathering new information right now. he'll join us with a live report in our next half hour. well, bart is hoping for a much smoother ride this morning. this is after a scare for some of the riders that started with panic, then led to long delays during the evening commute, an equipment failure forcing those passengers out of one train to jump onto those tracks, and some of them even documenting that drama on their phones today in the bay's ginger conejero saab joins us live this morning and what about today? should riders be concerned about any lingering issues there? ginger well, it doesn't seem so. laura and marcus, good morning to you. service resumed as early as yesterday, early evening. but for those passengers who saw the incident and actually experienced it, it was enough for them to take matters into their own hands. should we go? i don't know what. hey, everybody. this come on, come on. well, you can hear the confusion and the

panic that some passengers had while evacuating that richmond bound bart train at the macarthur station yesterday. you can see them jumping off of the train because of smoke coming from one of the cars. now, the passenger who pulled the emergency lever to open the train door says that she had to think and act fast, with smoke making its way into the train. i thought it was going to blow up. that's that was the worst thing because it was the popping that i could continue to hear, the popping and the smelling of the smoke, seeing the smoke outside of the window of the train. so we were then it started getting frantic. well, this is the latest incident for bart. that's leaving some riders with mixed feelings before hopping on the train. just last week, multiple bart stations shut down due to a network outage that caused delays between stations. and last month, a fire at a critical switching center at the 12th street station in oakland caused delays as well, but fortunately

yesterday there were no reported injuries, according to bart. that is a bright side to this, but definitely the confusion, the scare very evident there on those passengers and in that cell phone video that we showed marcus and laura. yeah. understanding how scary that could be for them. thank you, ginger, for the very latest. 605 right now, the democratic national convention starts with a sendoff of sorts in chicago. in fact, we have a live look at the united center inside. that's where president biden last night took the stage, making his case that vice president kamala harris is the one to carry the torch. the president was greeted by an ovation lasting nearly four minutes today in the bay's damian trujillo was there to witness it all. he has a closer look at a historic night in chicago and what's on tap for day two. it will be another big night tonight. michelle obama will hit the stage and then it will be the 44th president of the united states. her husband, barack obama. last night was

about joe. chants of thank you, joe boomed across the arena here in chicago, the president came to hand over the reins of the democratic party to vice president kamala harris. harris made a surprise appearance on the big stage last night to thank the president and to urge people to get out and organize. former first lady and secretary of state hillary clinton was also here to thank the president and take some jabs at donald trump. but the night was about joe biden taking the stage just before 1030 last night, thanking the delegates and passing the torch to a new generation are you ready to vote for democracy and for america? let me ask you, are you ready to elect kamala harris and tim walz, president, vice president, united states? there are still three days left of this convention and more heavy hitters are on the way, culminating thursday night when kamala harris officially accepts the nomination. crews spent the night cleaning the arena and

preparing for tonight, the big night. day two of the democratic convention in chicago. we're inside the united center. i'm damian trujillo, nbc bay area news. well, president biden actually not sticking around for the rest of the dnc. in fact, he's actually waking up this morning in california. air force one touched down about three hours ago at santa barbara airport in southern california. he and the first lady are planning to spend the rest of the week on vacation in santa barbara county. they're staying in santa ynez in the san luis obispo tribune reports. the faa is issuing temporary flight restrictions through sunday around santa ynez airport. that's when the bidens are scheduled to return to delaware. and we want to take you back to another look inside where the convention is being held. this is where it's not just democrats who are tuning in to the dnc. republicans also as well. now, we spoke with john dennis. he is the chairman of the san francisco republican party, and he calls this really a pivotal moment for the harris campaign.

you know, if she doesn't get active, if she doesn't lay out policy, if she doesn't start doing media appearances, she runs the risk of donald trump defining and the entire narrative for the rest of the election. vice president harris will get a bump coming out of the convention. it will go sort of her way through labor day through next week. and then the real game starts after labor day. i said this morning on today, our dnc coverage continues. it's going to include more highlights of president biden's appearance and the mood of the convention ahead of night two. it is 608 on your tuesday morning. taking a live look outside this time from the east bay in walnut creek. look at all the folks already out the door getting a jump on their day. let's check in with cinthia pimentel. it's a nice start to our morning. it is a nice start and i wanted to stay there in the east bay. we talked a little while ago about move in day at cal. prepare to break a sweat. i know won't be too hot. we're going to keep the temperatures in the upper 70s. but once you're moving and grooving,

yeah, you're going to need some water and take some breaks in the shade. let's come down here into the south bay where it will be warmer. definitely. san jose, south on into morgan hill and gilroy. temperatures there are going to creep up and not really approaching the 90 degrees, but we're going to get there and feel lots of sunshine and a warm day ahead down here. this is the warmest day of the week before we track some cooler changes. the second half of the week, i'll be back with that in a few moments. but mike, we are helping people get out the door with some cheaper gas prices. yeah, well, we've been tracking them. as you know, we typically do. and so we'll take a look as we move along in toward those gas prices. we're talking about the weekend changes. and now san jose's returned back to the top ten or the ten best list for our state. 375 is the best we can do though. costco on evergreen loop. then in marin county, the best we find is 389 at elite gas and mart on ritter street. that's in san rafael. this middle number and alameda county lists fremont with the lowest of 395 at vargas on grimmer. make sure you check or contribute

autopilot turns off. united airlines predicting its busiest labor day in years. more than 3 million passengers over the weekend. a lot of people flying, one pundit pointing out. in this economy, people are leaving airport to airport. you may have heard about that terrible boat wreck in sicily. a baby saved from the water, but a lot of people still missing after a sudden storm, including mike lynch, often called the bill gates of britain. lynch had just been found not guilty in san francisco court of business fraud. hewlett packard had accused lynch of ripping them off in an $11 billion deal to buy his company autonomy. hp said lynch messed with the financials to overvalue it. several news agencies, including the telegraph and bloomberg, say lynch and the other 11 passengers were on the superyacht to celebrate his victory in court. american intelligence agencies say it was indeed iran that hacked the trump campaign. those hackers also tried unsuccessfully to get into the harris campaign, not

the first time foreign hackers have tried to interfere. the last time 13 american intelligence agencies blamed the russians. but trump famously announced in helsinki during a press conference with putin he believed putin that the russians didn't do it and not u.s. intelligence. lastly, marcus and laura, you saw that huge truck fire that shut down both directions of 80. yesterday it was a tesla battery powered truck burned to the ground. i spoke yesterday with a battery expert who reminds us that batteries are a special fire danger. most of these batteries bring their own oxygen to the party. they don't need the oxygen from the air. so they can kind of go into something called thermal thermal, thermal runaway. so thermal runaway is when the heat of the fire is sustaining more battery fire. and that causes a real problem. and of course firefighters get special training in this, including out in placer county. but the more rural you get and the more volunteer you get as

these electric cars, electric trucks start to spread, the more training they need. you know, to cut it open with the jaws of life, because there's high energy in there. how they catch fire, etc. need to be trained to firefighters? very much so. okay thanks. you bet. new at 6:00. the merger between alaska and hawaiian airlines. now just a step away from becoming reality. alaska airlines says its plan just got approval from the u.s. justice department. it had until this morning to investigate the deal or file a lawsuit to block it. the two airlines must now win approval from the u.s. transportation department before that deal can close. so it's a special day for our nbc news family. that's because today shows legendary weatherman al roker turns 70. al has been a fixture there for decades, and today there's going to be a big party on the plaza. and as he was approaching his big day, he actually thought it would be really helpful to talk to others who mark this milestone recently

school day. lots of kids back to school already. now, as we go on into the second half of the week, we've got some changes to talk about. we'll go into thursday. we might start to bring some of the fall sweaters out as we see a cold front starting to approach the bay area. even the chance of bringing some showers already to parts of maybe the mendocino coast and north as we go on into friday. the models are starting to paint a little bit more rain on our outlook here, as we go on into parts of the north bay, maybe the east bay, but really not the dark greens up here for the bay area. so the chance of really squeezing anything out of this are very minor. not zero. so there, there, as we go on into friday, but then we'll start to lift out and scooch out this low pressure system and actually get into some clear and warmer weather ahead as we go on into the final week of august. believe it or not. so here's how it plays out the next couple of days in napa. very toasty for our tuesday. cooling down into

the weekend, but not too bad there. not a significant drop there for friday and saturday will go on into some warmer weather. upper 90s into next week. if those temperatures do verify. san francisco a beautiful day there in the city. second day of school for the kids and we'll see a cooler and breezier end to our workweek before some milder weather returns into the weekend. mike, you're saying the report is a little scattered right now? yeah, it's not as consistent as you might expect for this tuesday, especially after what we saw with the build for the early commute yesterday. right now, we're just starting to see the build here at the richmond bridge. cynthia called that out. she showed it to you earlier in the shot, but i wanted to show you the speed sensors approaching the area as well. now, this area of richmond had early slowing. it was more significant than we often see. kind of sorted itself out. and now returning. so there is more traffic volume coming through that portion of the east shore freeway. but it's pretty smooth once you get to the bay bridge, there's the backup there, of course, smooth across the span.

to say? 20 years later, breaking his silence, scott peterson, speaking for the first time in more than two decades. what he's now saying about his case and his push for a new trial. this is today in the bay. good tuesday morning, 630 right now. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. time to get a look at what you can expect from that forecast today. cinthia pimentel in for kari this morning with a look at the beautiful sunrise. i know it's so beautiful. how could you have a bad day when you just look towards the skies? i like the way you said that. and we're off to a gorgeous start there in san francisco. if we're off to a clear start this morning there, you know, we can expect some warm temperatures really throughout the bay area. actually, it will be the warmest day of the week. 80s and some low 90s for our inland valleys. but then we start to cool things down thursday on into friday.

this will be kind of a mood setter with some breezier conditions, cloudy, and even a chance of some spotty rain. but don't worry, the weekend already looking ahead. sunny and warm once again. so we'll get to all those details in a few minutes. mike, we are starting at the san mateo bridge going on. yeah. it's packed. yeah, it's packed in here. but you know, everything is moving and that's good. we had earlier problems early in the morning. i thought there may be some lane restrictions, but nope. so 92 has actually recovered from any slowing they had. we're at the limit. but again that volume will be the main factor as we will see those speeds start to slow. and we do see the feed coming in off of 880 out of the castro valley y and down toward union city. for that typical southbound commute. the south bay san jose does show that slowing for 101 northbound we saw developing. and over here in contra costa county, pretty standard pattern. now the build up in toward walnut creek back to you. well, developing this morning in the south bay, it has been a long night for firefighters who are still at the scene where a series of fires started in the foothills and left them scrambling. today

in the bay's bob redell live this morning there. and bob, i know you got an update on containment. where does it stand this morning? at 25%, you can see cal fire still on the scene. they've been out here all night to make sure that this wildfire doesn't flare back up. as you look up to the right, you can get a sense of the burn scar. there was a series of three fires you mentioned here in the east foothills of san jose. we're a nine mile drive up quimby road, and now this is the first time firefighters are getting their eyes on the fire with the sunlight. so right now, they say it's 33 acres. but once they get a better look, maybe that acreage could change the fire started late yesterday evening. it became visible for miles away. people on the valley floor could see it again, scorched 33 acres. at one point there were 115 people out here from cal fire and san jose fire that were fighting this. and it gives you an idea just how big the response was. cal fire also called in one of their fire hawks. that's a helicopter to drop lots of water on this fire.

as i mentioned, the fire activity is suppressed right now. you can hear a truck to my right heading back up there. that's a tender, an engine, actually, with cal fire heading up onto the scene. probably do a shift change as we're approaching 630 7:00. so fire activity is suppressed, forward progress is halted, and again, the fire is now 25% contained. we're using air and ground resources. we have well over 100 personnel all together at scene of the fire. we're really fortunate we were able to utilize our aircraft and we're still, as you were saying, we can still use them right now. we are given additional, permissions to use them at night so that definitely helped us to cool the fire down and put it out. a couple of challenges for the fire department. as you can see behind me, we're up against the hill. the terrain here is steep and then the roads are also very narrow. quimby road is a narrow two lane road, so the fire trucks, as you look over to your left, you might be able to

see it shortly. they're just having to navigate, the access up here. but they are able to get up there. this is not unusual for them to fight these kinds of fires. as far as the cause, we did ask about that. and the cause of this fire still under investigation here in the east foothills of san jose, reporting live here along quimby road in san jose, bob redell, today in the bay. all right. let's hope they get full containment soon. thanks for the latest, bob, but we are following breaking news this morning out of the middle east. israel says that its military has recovered the bodies of six hostages taken by hamas during the october 7th terror attacks. the names of those victims are on your screen. they range in age from 35 to 80. troops recovered their bodies. this was during an overnight operation in southern gaza. now all of this comes amidst a possible defining moment in the war. us secretary of state antony blinken saying israel is accepting a new ceasefire proposal. he goes on to say that onus is now on home

on hamas to finalize those details. hamas has previously refused to play ball here, accusing israel of adding unacceptable new conditions, including no full withdrawal from gaza, and it is still not clear what the proposal contain. but talks are expected to resume in egypt later this week so far without hamas taking part. now to decision 2024 and former president barack obama is among the speakers expected tonight at the democratic national convention in scott mcgrew. current president biden kicking things off last night. that's right. and he had two jobs, marcus. and he did both very well. he spoke about his achievements, and there were many from the lower cost of insulin and other drugs. inflation reduction act, chips act. and his second job going all in behind his replacement, kamala harris. it's been the honor of my lifetime to serve as your president. i love the job, but i love my country more. i

love my country more. than all this talk about how i'm angry with all those people who said i should step down. that's not true. now, if there's a third thing biden had to do, it's something he's been doing all along, and that is warning american voters about the danger. he says donald trump poses to the future of democracy. democracy has prevailed. democracy, democracy has delivered. and now democracy must be preserved. there was a very nice moment after his speech was done, where he was greeted by his wife, the first lady. and let's take a moment for that. i love that i love i keep thinking of. brie. i love

that the bidens are vacationing this morning in the santa barbara area. there was a voice vote last night to ceremonial nominate the tim walz as vice president, or at least the vice presidential candidate he passed. kamala harris will accept her nomination in a speech on thursday. other speakers notably included alexandria ocasio-cortez. she got a lot of time for a person who is significantly to the left of biden and harris and warriors coach steve kerr. here's coach kerr talking about the election ahead after the results are tallied. that night. we can, in the words of the great steph curry, we can tell donald trump night night. meantime, outside the convention protests over the war in gaza, protesters broke through one line. there have been a handful of arrests. the chicago tribune reporting six, but no violence. the chicago

superintendent of police, their police chief is in that police skirmish line there. somewhere. there there's that skirmish line. both chicago police and visiting agencies have been helping out, giving special de-escalation training to those police officers. not a single person doesn't think of 68, including the chicago police. we continue to our coverage of the dnc tonight, just as we did the week long rnc. tonight's speakers powerhouse. both obama's and harris's husband, possibly the first first gentleman in history, possibly. and illinois billionaire governor pritzker. laura, thank you very much, scott. well, happening today, oakland teachers and parents plan to make their voices heard after learning some students were exposed to lead in the water. the district says it's tested more than 1000 faucets over the past few months, and identified 186 fixtures with elevated levels. district policy says

those water sources should have immediately been taken out of service. but we spoke with one teacher at frick united elementary academy of language. he says the school was never notified of the elevated lead levels until the first day of school last week, and that's even though public records show the testing was done back in april and students have been drinking water from those fountains. one of the fountains has 51 parts per billion of lea, which is an insane amount of lead for students. for children to be drinking from. and they have been doing that since apri, including in summer school. he says the principal immediately covered the faucets when notified in a letter sent out by the district, says it did not communicate effectively about test results and fixes, adding it is putting systems in place to ensure lack of communication does not happen again. the pta at hillcrest school, alongside oakland unified school board vice president mike hutchinson,

courtesy of new discoveries and a docu series airing on peacock focused on scott peterson, who is now trying to win himself a new trial. that series actually dropped this morning, and today in the bay's kris sanchez joins us in our newsroom. excuse me with the first look and the first comments from peterson that we've actually heard in years here. kris, you'll remember laura, he did not testify in his own trial. so this is the first time that scott peterson has spoken since he was convicted 21 years ago, the first of three episodes in the peacock docu series face to face dropped overnight. the second two followed shortly after. in it, we see many of the same pictures and videos of scott and laci peterson's life together and. but what's different is scott peterson's account of the investigation saying investigators focused in on him immediately, including former modesto police detective brocchini, who questioned peterson on the day that laci peterson disappeared when he

took a first walk through the house with the other officers. i don't think they knew that i was near them when one of them, you know, said, oh yeah, we know what's going on here. it's the husband, you know. and then he realized i was there. his questions were not questions. they were accusations. he had made up his mind before he even arrived at our home. now, in that peacock docu series, investigators in the case detailed the evidence that they say made him the prime suspect and which ultimately led to scott peterson's conviction. as we have reported, the los angeles innocence project took up his case, saying that there was evidence that was not introduced at the time, including evidence of a burglary and an abandoned van that was found across the street from the peterson home, and duct tape on laci peterson's clothing. now, at the same time, netflix released a docu series last wednesday, which counters scott peterson and his family's count.

laci peterson's mother talks about the tender beginnings and then the regret that she bought that too. good to be true romance. this one mentioned scott peterson's affair with another woman and the timeline of the purchase of a boat and the launching of that boat in the berkeley marina 90 minutes from the peterson's modesto hom. though there were other bodies of water around. no new evidence in this one. it seems to be a counter message to the peacock docu series. because of a venue change, scott peterson was tried in san mateo county and that is, of course, where the la innocence project is making its case. we've been covering that for you. the judge agreed to a neutral lab to conduct dna testing on a piece of duct tape that i mentioned found on laci peterson's clothing. now, the theory, the judge said that she would issue a ruling in 90 days. that hearing was about five weeks ago. so we are within that window and we will continue to track that for you. laura thanks so much, chris. well, new at six applications for a new immigration program are now

open. it aims to allow more spouses of u.s. citizens to apply for legal status. to be eligible, those spouses must have lived in the u.s. for at least ten years and have been married before the program was announced on june 17th. those who are eligible can apply for a green card, then citizenship, then possibly a work permit. the white house estimates about 500,000 people may be eligible for this new program. our sister station in san diego spoke with one couple applying for the new program. they were married years ago. he is an american citizen. she is a daca recipient and arrived in the u.s. from mexico as a baby, but never received a green card. they say they've lived in fear of deportation. ever since they met, but are now breathing a sigh of relief. it's a lot of uncertainty, which sucks a lot of stress, i'm just glad we're going through it. it's been a long time. yeah i'm

sorry. yeah, but i'm really happy. until now, federal law forced many immigrant spouses to leave the united states and apply for a visa at a consulate abroad, a process that often forced people to be away from their families for years. meanwhile, the warriors are saying aloha to the bay area, at least when it comes to this upcoming training season. so the team just announcing those plans to hold their camp in hawaii on oahu's north shore. it's going to take place at the start of october, and the last time they actually did this was back in 2007. this was at the point before steph curry was actually on the team. the first preseason game happens in sacramento on october 9th. not a bad summer camp. okay. well this is new for you this morning. a happy reunion for one cat that somehow lost its way. so he first disappeared a few weeks ago from his home outside of boston. and

don't tell his owners. but maybe he just wanted to get away. after all, he was found at an airport garage about ten miles from home. harry is an eight year old indoor black and white little kitty there, and in july, his family suspects he found a way to sneak out. they recently learned two transportation employees discovered him hiding in the garage on airport property, clearly still awaiting his flight. didn't really get to get away. a microchip made all the difference in reconnecting those parties, and however, harry got there, he's keeping it to himself. he's back home, but he was trying to get away. i guess if he was getting a flight. or maybe he was trying to rent a car. yeah, maybe. who knows? little hairy. this cat. the animals could speak sometimes. i know the things that go. i saw someone connect a camera to the cat, and it was just like jumping all over the neighborhood. it was actually pretty cool to see. all right. interesting to see where they go. yeah, yeah. and what they do. watch for that on the fall lineup. yeah all right. let's get a look of the forecast for

today. it's a nice start to our day a nice start sometimes you want to get away but sometimes staying right here is gorgeous enough i mean, look at this beautiful view from sfo. clear skies throughout the peninsula. stunning sunshine down here in the south bay. yeah, you need maybe a light layer this morning, but then into the afternoon we're pushing it aside and bringing all the energy for this warm summer day. 90s out in solano county, vacaville and fairfield, continuing on into parts of concord down into gilroy. a bit cooler down into parts of los gatos. and as we trek up into parts of the peninsula, upper 60s for half moon bay to some low 80s in palo alto, this will be the warmest day of the week as we go on into tomorrow. subtle changes for our wednesday. we're going to just bring them down a few very pleat throughout the bay. 60s and 70s bayshore, those 80s through parts of napa, over on into concord and in morgan hill 86. this is where we're going to feel the changes, though, for thursday and friday as we go on

and look at the cold front arriving, we're going to feel an uptick in the winds, feel those temperatures drop into some low 70s in some spots, some spots 60s by the bay and some foggy conditions. at times, even the chance of getting a sprinkle or two on your windshield as we go on into friday. right now, it's trending mainly up into the north bay, but it could push on south and will track that line here into the bay area and see who gets that rain. but don't get mad at me. i know we have summer and then fall in the 7-day forecast, but we'll have summer once again for the weekend, so that will be nice for your little staycation here. and we're actually looking at a warming trend into next week as well. san francisco mild for today. breezy and cool through the second half of the week. but then some pleasant temperatures ahead for the weekend too. mike, you're tracking more slowing on the bay right there. san mateo bridge exactly across the bay and around the bay. but you know what? just like you did, we have something for everyone. so here,

hamilton. new numbers from cal fire show it is now 25% contained. the flames burned more than 30 acres. teams this morning are still there monitoring for hotspots, and we are following some breaking news this morning out of the middle east. israel says that the military has recovered the bodies of six hostages taken by hamas during the october seventh terror attacks. now, the names of those victims are on your screen. they range in age from 35 to 80. troops recovered their bodies during an overnight operation in southern gaza. now, this comes as u.s. secretary of state antony blinken says israel is accepting a new cease fire proposal. hamas has previously refused to play ball, accusing israel of adding unacceptable new conditions, including no full withdrawal from gaza. talks are expected to resume in egypt later this week. the democratic national convention continues. here's a live look inside the united center. that's where former president barack obama and former first lady michelle
