5:01 am
right now at five. an emotional night at the dnc. tim walz, accepting the democratic nomination for vice president with a pep talk packed with viral moments. we are in in chicago with his message to voters. and history is expected to be made tonight. we're looking ahead as vice president kamala harris prepares to accept her party's nomination on the final night of the convention. this is today in the bay. and a very good thursday morning to you. thanks for starting your day with us at 5:00. right now, i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. mike is going to have a look at that commute coming up in just a bit. but let's talk about that forecast this morning. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking what we can expect out there today. and it's going to be another nice one, but much cooler. and we are going to see a drop in temperatures for a couple of days. even though we're starting out mild, we're right now in the low 60s from san jose to palo alto to walnut creek and upper 50s in san francisco, already a breezy wind picking up there as
5:02 am
we go throughout today, we are going to see those temperatures about ten degrees lower than yesterday. so we're looking at a high of 75 degrees in san jose, 78 degrees in morgan hill, and for much of the east bay, some mid to upper 70s only 80 in concord as well as antioch, while oakland will see a high of 71 and will be in the low 60s for half moon bay, with mid 70s for redwood city and san francisco. we're back to the 60s, so we'll talk about what's ahead in a few minutes. mike takes us to the carquinez bridge. yeah, we'll give you a big view of contra costa county over in this portion of our map, there's benicia, carquinez bridge or al zampa, depending on which way you go. most of us still call it carquinez bridge over here, as you travel westbound, there will be a crew that's still blocking, possibly two lanes for a bit. as you're heading toward the bridge. it doesn't look like any slowing on the sensors. a smooth drive, our first slowing should show up in a few minutes. over there, out of merritt island for westbound highway 37 not there yet. smooth drive up and down the peninsula and other side of the bay. looks
5:03 am
like a new, possibly a disabled vehicle. check on the hazard reported over there in pleasanton, dublin area. back to you. thanks, mike. well, today is the last day at the democratic national convention. want to give you a live look this morning inside the united center. this is where vice president kamala harris is expected to speak tonight. so last night, minnesota governor tim walz accepting the democratic nomination for vice president. today in the bay's damian damian trujillo continues our coverage from chicago. good morning. today is a big day. kamala harris officially accepting the nomination here in chicago. it's been three days of booming cheers. and there's one day left. there were many speakers and acts last night that brought delegates to their feet from stevie wonder to former president bill clinton, but last night was about vice presidential nominee tim walz. walz took the stage shortly before ten local time, and by then the crowd had built up their excitement and walz wasted no time going on the attack. their project, 2025 will make things much, much harder for
5:04 am
people who are just trying to live their lives. they spent a lot of time pretending they know nothing about this, but look, i coached high school football long enough to know and trust me on this. when somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they're going to use it. they'll start jacking up the costs on the middle class. they'll repeal the affordable care act, they'll gut social security and medicare, and they will ban abortion. across this country with or without congress. the delegates soaked it all in with those from california and the bay area leading the way. i mean, the energy he brought. this is a man who understands people, and he understands kindness and decency. these are things that donald trump simply does not have. and we couldn't have asked for a better running mate for kamala harris. i wish he was my next door neighbor. he's the classic person that you want as your neighbor, because if your kid comes flat, tire coach walz will be out changing
5:05 am
it. if your kid needs some extra coaching for sport, coach walz will be doing it. there were many surprises on stage last night, and no doubt there will be more today as kamala harris makes history here in chicago. we are in chicago. i'm damian damian trujillo today in the bay. all right. as you heard, damian just mentioned, vice president kamala harris will close out the dnc convention with her acceptance speech later tonight. today in the bay's bob redell joins us live this morning. and what do we expect from the oakland native? bob good morning to you, laura. nbc news is reporting that vice president harris will begin her speech in chicago by praising president joe biden, who is, you're well aware, stepped aside earlier this summer to allow harris to run for president. she is expected to thank him for his service and highlight the administration's accomplishments. then harris will focus on three areas one, she will contrast her vision for america with the one being offered by former president donald trump. two a campaign
5:06 am
official tells nbc news she'll root that vision in a, quote, deep and abiding sense of patriotism. and three, she will share a personal and professional background of herself. kamala harris also has to reintroduce herself to american voters. of course, she's the sitting vice president, so she has a lot of name recognition. but most americans don't know a lot about her. you know, those of us here in california, we're pretty familiar with her and her career, but a lot of voters are just getting to know kamala harris, her life story, her experience, what she stands for. when vice president harris speaks tonight, she will make history as the first black woman and first asian american person to accept a major party's nomination for president of the united states, nbc news reports. harris is conscious that as a black and south asian woman, she wants to be, quote, a president for everyone. reporting live, bob redell today in the bay. we will see how it all plays out.
5:07 am
thank you. bob. stay with nbc to watch vice president kamala harris accept her nomination tonight on the final night of the democratic national convention, coverage begins at 6:00. join lester holt, savannah guthrie, and the nbc news team for live reporting, interviews and analysis right here on nbc bay area and of course, our damian trujillo will continue the coverage from the dnc. you can watch him live tonight on nbc bay area. former president donald trump heads to arizona today to take aim at immigration. so yesterday in north carolina, trump held his first outdoor campaign event since that assassination attempt. the former president spoke from behind a bulletproof glass while his speech focused on national security. trump also laid the groundwork to potentially question the election results. he also responded to those sharp attacks from the obamas. our primary focus is not to get out the vote. it's to make sure they don't cheat because we have all the votes you need. he was taking shots at your president and so was michelle. you know, they always say, sure. please

stick to policy. don't get personal. and yet they're getting personal all night long. these people do. i still have to stick to policy. well, the former president will be glendale tomorrow for his first rally in the state since harris took over the ticket. meanwhile, trump could soon get a boost from robert f kennedy jr. the independent candidate planning to drop out and endorse trump. this is all according to two sources familiar with the plans. kennedy spokesperson posted on x yesterday that his boss plans to address the nation live on friday about his path forward. happening today, homeless advocates are organizing a protest opposing san francisco's recent effort to clear its encampments. critics argue mayor london breed is making sweeps a central part of her reelection strategy. the mayor admits the city must change its position on the unhoused. advocates plan to gather a little after noon along

the sixth street corridor. one of the flashpoints in the recent crisis. they also plan to march to city hall. 508 this morning, let's take a live look outside in downtown san jose. beautiful start to our thursday morning. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking those temperatures there, and i can even tell this morning, like coming in, it is a little bit cooler. yes. and it will be a much cooler day. we are going to see those clouds linger for a lot longer. so as we're getting started, we can see the clouds over san francisco. and it's also the first day of school for a lot of kids once again. so in emeryville it's going to be cloudy and drop off time. we're in the low 60s. overall, a cool day so they can wear pants and long sleeves for the start of the school year, and our temperatures will be cooler than what's average for this date. a big change compared to what we've seen recently. so santa rosa today, the high will be 77 when normally on this date we're up to about 85 degrees. we're about eight degrees cooler than normal. and concord san francisco about average there. and in oakland we're just a few
5:10 am
degrees below what we typically see. while san jose will be in the mid 70s. take advantage because we will see big changes ahead. we'll talk about that in a few minutes. mike's been tracking how those gas prices are moving. yeah. and it may look like big changes. we're just picking out different cities because some more school districts start today. so we'll talk about san jose school district. another school district starts today. mount pleasant. we're going to head for south of there, just a little south of that school district to san jose's best price of 375 at platinum gas on tully road. next price up here. san bruno park school starts, so we'll report san bruno as we get back here to san bruno. gas. 419 a gallon on san mateo avenue. we're looking over toward the last price. emeryville, carey talked about that school district starting today as well. the best we can find listed is for 85. that's at the shell station on powell. it's right below our traffic camera. we can look over the top of that, but today we're looking at that as the last price that we got through gasbuddy.com on the roadways. we'll look at the

smooth flow of traffic. i told you we check on tri valley. but first a stop a crash here reported on the nimitz southbound. the crash has been reported northbound to see a little slowing, which just cleared up. but either way, the crash reported on the shoulder will track that and disabled vehicle reported traveling west around el charro. it may be blocking the slowing, so we'll track that back to you. good to know. thanks, mike. slamming the brakes on rail freight in canada. coming up next. why the labor dispute to the north could send shockwaves throughout the u.s. economy. plus, move over netflix. here comes a chick flicks. yeah. we're going to tell you about the reported streaming platform. one popular food chain is working to launch and get ready for a west coast showdown. giants versus the mariners three game series, kicking off this friday at 7 p.m. right here on nbc. bay are. best seat in the house. much more news ahead. you're watching toda in the bayy

because it's going to be hot again. so let's enjoy this now while we have it. it's going to be in the low 60s as you step out the door. upper 50s for san francisco and the clouds that we are seeing overhead will linger a lot longer throughout the morning, keeping those temperatures down. it's the first day of school, also in menlo park. today it's going to be a cloudy morning and drop off time. i think that's pretty good for the school pictures though. when you're taking the pictures of the kids out before they get on the bus or walk to school, and at pick up time, it will be in the upper 60s. so really comfortable. but it will be windy. let's get a look at our highs across the bay area for today. we're up to 77 in los gatos and cupertino. we don't always see temperatures like this in the 70s for much of the bay area, even in the inland valleys, livermore, up to 78 degrees and 80. in concord, in antioch. those are the warmer spots, while redwood city will be in the mid 70s. we'll stay in the 60s in san francisco. one thing you'll notice, though, that it will be very windy
5:20 am
throughout the day, including the north bay where some of those gusts will reach into the 25 30 mile per hour range. and so temperatures in the upper 70s may actually feel a little bit cooler. let's go. hour by hour with our wind forecast and these areas in pink and the purple, those are the hills of the mountains where we may see gusts up to 50mph today. and you can see that also coming through the altamont pass. and parts of the east bay hills. we are going to have a very windy day as we transition into some cooler temperatures, into the afternoon. and then tomorrow we'll see a chance of rain, mainly farther north around ukiah, up toward eureka. that's where we will have the best chance of seeing the wet weather. it's not looking like a lot of rain, but for it to come so early in the season, it's definitely noteworthy and we'll be watching that with the possibility of some very high elevation snow in the sierra. and then we go from seeing some rain and cooler temperatures to
5:21 am
much hotter weather. we're going to be near the triple digits again next week. and i was just hoping that we could just settle in with fall. but summer wants to battle back and we're going to have some hot weather coming back in for the middle of next week. mike, how's it looking now in the tri valley? we'll take you back to that dublin shot. hoping, well, not hoping. wondering if we could see anything. westbound. is your commute direction approaching the dublin interchange back at el charro, reports of a disabled vehicle possibly blocking the slow lane. that was the latest update from chp, but we don't have that in view or not. clearly, in view. so it's back over here. no slowing sensors there, but the shot we just showed you there is some slowing. just as folks are approaching that dublin interchange, an easy drive coming out of the altamont pass. no surprises. vasco road coming down here out of contra costa county just fine to this highlighting here. that would be some wind kicking in. and that's what kerry talked about later in the day. a little more significant. but right now it does pick something up going there out of discovery bay a smooth flow of traffic heading
5:22 am
off to benicia and carquinez bridges. and there, just like we told you, we could see it coming up. it did highway 37 a little build out of vallejo, mare island. no problems across the richmond or bay bridges, smooth drive, san mateo and dumbarton bridge is a nice flow of traffic and we have the south bay. a quick view of that emeryville camera here, and a smooth flow of traffic across between the city and the east bay. back to you. thanks so much, mike. well, power issues plaguing a newly opened pet rescue. just ahead, the miscommunication that may dog the new facility for some time. and speaking of dogs, it's time to help us clear the shelters. take a look at audrey. she's an eight month old, large mixed breed and available for adoption at the animal community center in milpitas. look at her looking all cute. find a full list of pets up for adoption. point your phone at this qr code. it will take you straight to our website so you can learn how to adopt or donate to some of our great bay area shelters, or just head to nbcbayarea.com. slash clear the shelters you're watching

thursday. yay! i'm laura. almost there. i'm marcus washington. let's head over for that thursday forecast with meteorologist kari hall. or friday eve. yeah. there you go. something to make it seem like it's closer. i know it's been a long week, and we're also going to be cooler and windy today. tomorrow. we'll have more clouds coming in and a very unusual august cold front that will bring in a lot more clouds, breezy winds, and even some spotty rain, mainly farther to the north. but then going into the weekend it will be sunny and we will see some warmer air ahead as we take a look at our current temperatures. you're stepping out the door to 57 in napa, as well as in san mateo and sunnyvale, and it is 61 in san jose. and happy first day of school for the kids in emeryville. it's going to be partly cloudy. mostly cloudy and low 60s to start, and then we'll head for the upper 60s. so overall, kind of a coolish day, especially for august. we'll talk about what's ahead coming up. and mike, you got an alert
5:32 am
for south bay commuters. yeah i like those temperatures. i do not like this. notice bart has been talking about delays from the beginning here because of an issue some sort of equipment issue out of the hayward train yard right here on the map. now, south of there, they're reporting major delays right now for the berryessa line. orange and green lines, basically from san jose, heading up in toward the rest of the bay. they have issues. i'm thinking this might turn out to be an issue for those two lanes for the longer term. this morning, because of what's been reported so far. we're looking at the rest of the lines that are moving okay anywhere north of hayward. you're fine for the bart lines. but watch, you might have to hit the roads as you're taking toward the rest of the freeways. we're looking at the south bay, where later on this morning, you watch. by 7:00. these will all fill in. but right now, it's just that first burst. we see more folks will hit the roadway. perhaps because of the issue out of the berryessa station for bart. so just watch that area. but it won't really impact. it'll disperse throughout the rest of the east bay if that's where they're headed. a smooth flow past the disabled vehicle over there. still 580 at el

taking a live look outside from the east bay this morning, waiting for the sun to come up over the bay area, looking over walnut creek. and we can look at the weekend, even though it's only thursday, as marcus reminded me. well, i mean, i'm looking ahead to the weekend on monday, so let's start to make some plans on this thursday. maybe you'll be going tomorrow evening to music in the square in redwood city. it starts out at 71 degrees and mostly cloudy, and only some peeks of sunshine as our temperatures drop and the winds pick up. it will be in the low 60s later on in the evening this weekend. there is a lot of events going on around san francisco and will be at 66 degrees and windy. you'll need your hoodie as well as also on saturday. the sunglasses. we're only going to make it up to about 68 degrees and low 70s. so slightly warmer on sunday if you're going to sonoma valley this weekend, you'll have some really nice weather. although it will be cloudy only 72 on friday. these temperatures are
5:42 am
cooler than normal, but we'll start to work our way back to some more summerlike weather by sunday, with highs reaching into the mid 80s as we get a look at big sur. it's going to be in the low 70s for friday, and then also about 73 degrees on saturday. starting out with some clouds, but then clearing out as we go throughout the day. and some upper 70s for the end of the weekend. if your weekend plans take you to yosemite or anywhere in the sierra, we are going to see that chance of some very high elevation snow. so it may start out as rain on friday evening and then transition over to snow as those temperatures drop late friday night into early saturday morning. and then we're going to see highs only in the low 50s there with some gusty winds and then clearing as we head toward sunday. so a lot of changes not only here in the bay area but also across the region. so i'll be tracking that for you. time now to check in with mike, who reminds us that crews will close a tunnel in san francisco starting today. yeah but it's not for drivers. kari.
5:43 am
you're correct about the closure. this tunnel is for muni metro or muni light rail. today is the start of an eight day tunnel closure in the city. this closure will impact muni's light rail service. crews are set to perform maintenance work on the twin peaks tunnel, servicing the k, l, m s lines as well. the shuttles there. the work will also close the west portal and forest hill muni stations. muni says bus bridge link will light rail link light rail riders between the stations and the castro or church street stations, but the riders have been warned to expect delays they know about. this bus bridge will take you through for the next week. i do want to take you to the maps where we'll talk about this. we'll show you this is the area. it's a tunnel and so this won't really affect the roadways, although you may see those busses having a few more folks as they're getting around the area. normally they would take the tunnel under the twin peaks area for the next week. that's just to just give you a approximate section. this is not exact route for that tunnel itself. we're looking toward the rest of the bay though, and it's
5:44 am
a smooth flow of traffic. we're looking over here toward the bay bridge with a little backup building there, as well as looking over here toward highway 37 and highway four with your typical builds as well. i do want to note that today's game over at the coliseum. unlike the previous three days, we have a mid day game and so we talk about that. mid day games mean they get out about the same time. evening traffic starts to bump up around the nimitz. so we'll just watch for that impact. perhaps as you're driving past the scene. the rest of the bay does show a smooth drive on the roads in fact, the expected slowing for 101 is there. this is unexpected, though. this big delay. major delay reported for the bart system. as we get out to the roadways. we're talking about the berryessa line, which should show up if i advance my maps. here we go. this is green. and the orange lines from berryessa in the south bay up to hayward. the hayward train yard is where those reports of equipment problems starting early this morning from the start of the service. so the green and the orange line may, in fact be out of commission, although they just told us about major delays, the rest of the bart system seems to be operating on time. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. taylor swift ready to

enforcement about the events planned. i've sent him an itinerary, a full itinerary of each day and each time, the location that we're doing stuff at. so they again, so they're in direct, close contact with us and they have an idea of what's going on in south lake tahoe will also close its parking lots at regan beach starting at 7 p.m. in the trailer parking area near lakeview. commons will be closed for the duration. well, happening tonight. santa clara county vector control launching a new round of spraying. this is after the discovery of mosquitoes with west nile. i want to show you a map here. it's going to show you the areas where those teams will spray tonight with a truck mounted with equipment. the spraying will start around 10 p.m. it's going to last for about four hours. residents where spraying will happen should be notified. so you should have information if it's going to happen in your area. so far, no human cases have been reported. a legendary sports bar in palo alto is getting new life. we're talking about the old pro on university avenue. it shut down back in

2022 due to rising costs following the pandemic. now the owner of bar zola around the corner is in the process of revitalizing it and dropping the old from the original moniker. jeremy ben-ami says he's also found a high profile investor to help him in his efforts. former stanford quarterback andrew luck. we hung out together and i shared my vision and he had some questions. and you know, he's also helped define a little bit of what we're doing. but really, he's the perfect partner for us. the name says the footprint of the pro will stay the same. the bar will remain in the middle. he's looking to open it up in the next nine months. so no more old pro just the pro. a new chick fil a restaurant is opening in gilroy this morning, and we'll just tell you the mood is pretty electric out there or as electric as things can be, at least at this hour. so we want to give you. here's the new location right here it is off chestnut street, right off of 101. it's actually expected to open with breakfast being served at 6:30 a.m. okay, so let's take
5:53 am
a live look. folks already lined up. they're ready to get their chick-fil-a. remember, people in line, they're still have at least about 45 minutes before those doors. actually open. we're guessing they have to wait for the service to come in as well. now we hear that the first fans showed up at eight last night to wait in line. i've been in and out of the line, so probably since about 12:00 last night. kind of like one of those, like you just have to experience it, you know, obviously i've been to chick fil a plenty of times, so once i found out when there's gonna be one in here in gilroy and they're going to have some like, you know, opening a bunch of people going to show up. so i thought, why not just show up and just be part of the part of the crowd? it's like black friday, right? to celebrate the grand opening. chick fil a says that it's donating $25,000 to second harvest of silicon valley, and 100 local heroes will be honored, receiving free chick fil a entrees for a year.
5:54 am
there you go. i remember that the very first chick fil a that came to the bay area, i mean, the lines were like five times that amount because they give away, you know, these free coupons and things like that. these folks know that they're not guaranteed to be local heroes. if they were in line first. it's a separate thing. you know, they're guaranteeing their bellies are going to be very, very pleased if they brought some over here big time. it would be nice. all right. well, nice weather to go with the food. yeah, it's going to be nice, but it is that time of year when we start checking on our drought monitor every thursday, and we are already starting to see things change. so we are now becoming abnormally dry for parts of northern california into the bay area we've had such a great start to the year with all the rain that we had last season. that has still been helping us out, but now we are going into some really dry conditions and we can tell by our vegetation, but looking at the north bay now included in abnormally dry conditions for northern sonoma county lake and mendocino
5:55 am
counties on northward, and about 7% of california is in a drought. so we'll be watching that. at least we do have cooler weather. we're starting out with some clouds this morning as we take a look at dublin. it's the first day of school for the kids in menlo park, and at drop off time it will be a cloudy morning, but great for that first day of school and really nice weather with our highs there in the upper 60s. now our temperatures today will be significantly cooler than what we've seen recently in fact, cooler than normal when we're going to see our high today of 77. in santa rosa, we're used to seeing some mid 80s this time of year, and in concord it will be 80 today when our average high temperature for this date is about 88 degrees. so nice and cool 75 in san jose and it will be windy watching out for those high wind gusts that will start to pick up around 2530 five miles per hour for the north bay. and then tomorrow a chance of rain dropping in for areas farther north as well as the sierra. we're going to see this
5:56 am
coming in this unusually strong august cold front, dropping our temperatures into the 70s, bringing a chance of rain. some gusty winds and then we're back to summer next week. look at next tuesday, 99 for the inland area. so we'll be tracking all of those changes for you. mike takes us back to the bay bridge because i noticed they had filled in all lanes a few minutes ago, and now things are looking a little bit well scattered here as well. no issues on the approach reported on the chp blotter, but that sometimes means something's going on here. oh, there is now a crash reported around powell. we'll check on that. meanwhile, the rest of the commute looks pretty standard. i did point out that cal starts this classes today, so that's over here. but just note that around the cal campus, there may be more folks walking around with their heads down looking at maps as they're walking around the campus. the note the bart updated their tweet, but they again talked about a 20 minute delay on the berryessa line because of an issue at the hayward train yard. back to you. thanks so much, mike. well, happening now for you. changes are coming for students looking for financial aid. the education department
