today is thursday, august 22, 2024. woman of the hour. democratic presidential candidate, vice president kamala harris, gets ready to deliver the biggest speech of her life. how she'll try to convince voters she's the best person for the job on the final night of the democratic national convention. exit strategy. robert f. kennedy jr. getting ready to end his presidential campaign. when he's set to make the big announcement, who he's expected to endorse and what could be in it for kennedy. shot approved. the food and drug administration gives the green light for an updated covid-19 vaccine. hour doctor explains why you may want to wait a few weeks to get it. and for the first time taylor swift talks online about the foiled terror plot that targeted one of her concerts. why she says she waited weeks to speak out. >> a story you don't want to
12:02 pm
miss. there's a lot of swifties out there. we begin with tonight's convention. >> a historic final day of the democratic national convention. >> tonight, vice president kamala harris set to formally accept the nomination for president in chicago. she will be the first black woman and asian american to earn the honor from a major party. it was one month ago today that vice president harris officially launched her campaign after president biden dropped out of the 2024 race and endorsed her. >> harris' running mate, tim walz, accepted the nomination last night. one of the biggest moments happened off stage, his 17-year-old son, gus, was cheering him on from the crowd. he stood up, pointed to the stage and said that is my dad. governor walz and his wife had said gus's learning disorders are his secret power. >> joining us from chicago is kelly o'donnell. it makes me cry every time i see that. it's a big day tonight for vice
12:03 pm
president harris in many ways, right? this is also her tenth wedding anniversary? is that right? what are we expecting out of this final night tonight, kelly. >> the stars are really aligning in terms of peak life moments for kamala harris. you're right, this is so critical, when you think of her time in public life, she was a california state official and quickly dubbed a rising star in the party. then a governing partner and running mate to joe biden, sitting vice president. tonight is a singular moment built around kamala harris herself and her vision of the country and what she wants to do at the top of the ticket and the candidate. we are in the california delegation here. daytime hours, there's a lot of rehearsing, music and delegates milling about. california is such a large piece of real estate on the convention floor, she will be surrounded by support.
12:04 pm
tonight the aim is for her in some ways to introduce herself to those americans who may only know a little bit about her or might only have a snapshot of what her time in office as vice president has been. we do expect that she will give respect and honor to president biden who made a lot of this possible for her and to show her appreciation for his public service. and then talking about her own vision and laying out what she has accomplished as a professional, as a lawyer, as a prosecutor, as a state attorney general, united states senator and vice president. implicit in all of that is to say she's prepared for this moment and she has a plan and a vision that she will have to articulate. and coming out of this convention, with all of the energy and focus on joy and freedom, terms they tried to brand as a part of her campaign, she will have to with there for
12:05 pm
things until the final night of the election. >> what else do we expect tonight? >> there will be a -- someone that they have been looking at to try to help bring home michigan, which is a critical battleground state. same, too, for senator mark kelly, who was in the running mate race. obviously she chose tim walz, but senator kelly for arizona, trying to bridge that. he as the spouse of gabby giffords, a former lawmaker herself, the victim of political violence, she can speak to issues that matter to this delegation and to this convention. we'll have that plus a bit of entertainment. pink will be singing tonight. ladies? >> is that who is behind you right now? i can't tell. >> i can't tell either. >> all right. >> i don't think that's pink at the moment.
12:06 pm
>> thank you. let's bring in chuck todd who is with us as well. great to see you. vice president harris is the headliner. you have a new article you have written on nbcnews.com about what this convention would have looked like if president biden was the headliner. how different would it have been? >> i think there's some dramatic ways. the biggest is the -- frankly the gaza protests. this has been the dog that has not bitten as far as -- i'm sure me saying it has convention organizers saying, hey, go find some wood to knock on. the numbers have not been nearly the crowd sizes they expected on that. you can see that -- the air came out of that balloon a bit. i also think tonally, you know, joe biden, when he was head of the party was painting donald trump as this dark and menacing threat to the future of the
12:07 pm
democracy. kamala harris in this one month that she has taken over the party has certainly made donald trump the center of this campaign but in a more the aging vegas act needs to go type of thing. turning the page, moving on, nine years, it's tiring. using a bit more satire to go after him rather than sort of the darker messaging, the darker fear tactic messaging that frankly i don't think was working. a lot of people didn't think it was working. now that you see this sort of messaging flip by harris, it's a reminder, this convention would have looked awfully different. the single biggest blunder of this campaign is donald trump's decision to accept the biden campaign's debate challenge back in june. imagine if trump had said no, we might not have -- he said we'll debate in september.
12:08 pm
we may have never had this candidate switch. >> it goes to show you how quickly things can change in this cycle. chuck, for tonight, what are you watching for when it comes to vice president harris? >> she has to fill in the blanks on her, not on substance. if she makes this a policy-oriented speech, you know, like frankly joe biden did on monday night, i think she'll lose the audience. i don't think people know about her time as a prosecutor. i don't think people know about her time as an attorney general. certainly some compelling cases she worked on that "politico" has been talking about today. reassuring voters that, hey, she shares their values without having to get too specific and divide her own party. >> chuck todd, thank you very much. we'll see you later. our special coverage of the dnc continues this afternoon it streams on nbc news now and prime time coverage begins at
12:09 pm
9:00 p.m. eastern tonight. >> that's when you can watch vice president kamala harris' speech on nbc news now or your local nbc station. let's turn to the republican nominee, former president trump. he's in arizona to visit the southern border. >> he may be adding an unlikely ally. nbc news has learned that robert f. kennedy jr., is planning to bow of the presidential race and endorse trump. dasha burns joins us now from arizona. the former president is in the same spot senator vance visited just a few weeks ago. what have we been hearing from the campaign on the issue of immigration and what do we expect to hear from mr. trump today? >> well, zinhle, former president trump just arrived on site moments ago. i'll step to the side so tony
12:10 pm
can show you the scene behind you here. he'll be stepping up to that podium shortly. right now, he's engaging with local law enforcement, some people we expect to be making an appearance during his remarks today. this is the issue the trump campaign has been hammering vice president harris on since the beginning. this is an issue where the former president feels he has a real edge, the polling does show that to be likely the case. he is going to go after her today, we expect, on the issue of immigration. that's what the campaign wants him to do. of course, there's the personal attacks that he can't help but use. so we'll see if he gets into that today. he's also likely to talk about his plan for his immigration policy if he were to win, which includes finishing the border wall, reinstating and expanding the travel ban and what he says will be the largest deportation operation in u.s. history. >> dasha, i want to ask about rfk jr. we just said he's probably going to drop out according to our
12:11 pm
sources. he started as a democrat in the race. why do we think he is dropping out and what might he say about donald trump? >> well, look, he was getting some significant numbers for a third-party candidate until vice president kamala harris became the top of the ticket for democrats, then you saw some of those double haters that lean left leave rfk and start supporting harris. that means that really a large portion of those voters who are left supporting rfk jr. are likely those people who are not sure about former president trump. there have been negotiations going on between the trump campaign and rfk junior for a while now to see if they could get to a place where rfk might suspend his candidacy and endorse the former president. we may see that tomorrow. sources are telling us it's not final until it's final. >> dasha burns, thank you very much. time for today's cnbc money minute. a major jobs number was given to
12:12 pm
some wall street firms 15 minutes before the public saw that. >> and walmart is teaming up with burger king. steve joins us now. >> the bureau of labor statistics is facing scrutiny after several wall street firms got a peek of the jobs report before it was posted on the agency's website. it's unsure if anyone actually traded on it but it's the latest in a series of incidents in which the agency shared information with investors before being available to the public. tourists carrying a section of the great wall of china can now have food delivered to them. a chinese food company will use drones to drop off food, drinks and other goods on a new extension of the wall that opened last year. and walmart announcing a whopper of a new perk for its walmart plus subscribers. members will receive a 25% discount on burger king orders

an international force is being considered on that corridor. >> israel and hezbollah exchanged cross-border strikes yesterday, despite the ongoing push by mediators for peace. you already talked about how optimism is dwindling. i imagine strikes only test that further. >> they do. you know, talking about the corridor, i must say and add to that that there is no confidence, the israels will say those advocating for an israeli presence on the ground will argue egyptian border guards there are too poorly paid and they can't be relied upon. as well there's reaction from the u.n. for these occupied palestinian territories, one said tonight this is history repeating itself and israel trying to create the conditions for a permanent occupation and more land grab. in the last 24 hours, five
