history was made last night in chicago. vice president kamala harris taking center stain on the final night of the democratic convention. she becomes the first woman of color to accept a major party's nomination for president. harris outlined an optimistic version for the future while giving stark warnings about donald trump. she spoke about her upbringing. >> our opponents in this race are out there every day denigrating america. talking about how terrible everything is. well, my mother had another lesson she used to teach. never let anyone tell you who you are. you show them who you are. >> nbc's brie jackson is in chicago with more on this historic nomination. >> reporter: history made. with kamala harris officially accepting the democratic party's nomination forpresident.

abortion rights on the ballot. but last month the secretary of state rejected the effort for not following the rules on state signature gathers. arkansas's near total ban on abortion with no exceptions will stand for now. ukrainian drones struck a military airfield in southern russia. part of kiev's expanding wave of strikes inside enemy territory. the regional kwoefrn governor says the attack was repelled. they targeted warehouses, storing anti-tank weapons and fuel. it was one of multiple drone attacks. the russian defense ministry said they shot down more than two dozen drones in six regions on thursday. ukraine has also intensified cross-border operations, sending nearly 250,000 russians fleeing. the canadian government is stepping in to try to end the

rail freight shutdown. the two largest railways locked out workers after failing to reach a deal on a new contract. the shutdown could send shockwaves through the u.s. supply chain and wreak havoc on canada's economy. here's kristine romans. >> reporter: back on track. after more than 9,000 canadian railroad workers were locked out of their jobs in a contract dispute over working conditions. and the trains stopped. >> good afternoon, everyone. >> reporter: canada's government stepping in to force both sides into binding arbitration. the timing is critical, just ahead of the grain harvest. without rails, farmers would not have been able to ship their crops. potentially raising prices. and ports worried about goods piling up intended for u.s. store shelves for the holidays. >> we want to go back to work. and we hope our negotiating teams can get a deal. >> reporter: the government saying rail operations will resume under the old contract until a deal is reached in arbitration. without a deal, every minute of
