fall yesterday. yes, it was nice to have the cooler weather. the clouds. and we're going to see more of the same today. even watching out for a chance of some spotty rain. as we take a look at this very unusual system that's rolling down the coast, coming in from the pacific northwest. and that will bring in some spotty showers all across the region. usually this time of year. if we do see some rain, it's from the remnants of a tropical system, not a cold front coming in. so it is nice to see that it's a little change. that is a welcome change and we'll see temperatures in the upper 50s and low 60s as you step out the door. we're only headed for the mid to upper 70s for today. for some of the warmer inland spots, and it will be partly to mostly cloudy. we'll talk about more changes ahead for the weekend. coming u. and mike, you were tracking a traffic break. yeah. and i think i maybe that were i was tracking a break because i believe it has cleared up. let's get you out to the roadways where we're looking at a smooth drive for most of your longer commutes coming in. highway four down through the

north bay, out of the cordelia area. we're looking over here, actually, to just heading away from the bay bridge. it's eastbound 580. for a short period of time, all lanes were blocked. on eastbound 580, there is a crash involving a motorcycle. i just wanted to clear everything and everyone out of the roadway. i have not heard about any major injuries or actually any injuries at all. and it looks like those speed sensors are lighting up again. i'm going to say i believe eastbound 580 at harrison may be cleared to the shoulder. we're going to continue to track that as those hopefully sensors get back to green the rest of the bay. a nice easy drive. we'll check vasco road coming up. back to you. thank you mike. 502 right now. history made on the closing night of the democratic national convention. kamala harris formally accepted the democratic nomination for president, making her the first woman of color ever to top a major party ticket. today, in the bay's damian trujillo was on the floor as that historic moment played out. he has this report from chicago. the crowd

was electric all four days here in chicago. delegates are calling this an overwhelming success by all measures. kamala harris arrived on stage to a thunderous roar. the delegates here have been waiting for this night. all week. they have been loud. they've been celebrating. and in the end, tonight, after a week of surprises and stars, everyone's focus was on the main event. the official nomination acceptance by kamala harris. the first time in history a black woman has been nominated for president by a major political party. i promise to be a president for all americans. you can always trust me. while democrats celebrate four days of party unity, party leaders say today is the day to get to work. it's back to pushing for every democrat to get out, get loud, and vote. and what many say will be a sprint to election day. we can't take anything for granted. i mean, we're feeling pretty optimistic. i am hopeful, but the election is not in the bag. we have got to go out and work. what has to happen on friday?
5:05 am
well, on friday will span back out throughout the country, back on the ground. speaking to the american people. and so they've tapped the gavel here in chicago. the convention is over. we're in chicago. i'm damian trujillo today in the bay. well, as history was playing out there in chicago, it was also a huge source of pride for east bay neighborhoods where kamala harris grew up. harris was born in oakland, and she was raised in berkeley, where she attended thousand oaks elementary school. she often credits her first grade teacher with what she calls a lifelong impact. school leaders there say that harris is an inspiration not to just the students, but also the staff. for me, it's really exciting to think where these students are going to go, right where. who are my future presidents that might be running these halls right now? and that's that's what gets me fired up. sky is the limit. well, harris was among the first group of children to participate in berkeley school's desegregation program. as part of that program, she was bused from her home in the flatlands to her

school in the hills 505. at the same time, kamala harris addressed the dnc. former president donald trump addressed followers on truth social. there, he laid out a series of posts attacking his opponent. among the issues he raised, harris's economic strategy, her position on immigration and housing costs. at one point, he even pointed out her running mate, tim walz, was not a coach but an assistant coach. in another post, he wrote in all caps, quote, lying again about project 2025, which she knows, and so do all democrats that i have absolutely nothing to do with. if you don't know, that's gop blueprint leaders laid out at the republican national convention. in another, he said, quote, a lot of talk about childhood. we've got to get to the border inflation and crime. well, stay with us for the latest on air and online. we have an entire page dedicated to the election. head to nbcbayarea.com slash decision 2024. 506 for you this morning.

down crime. the mayor recently told nbc. bay area news that overall crime in the city is down by 32%, but it doesn't feel like that if you are, let's say, in the alley piano bar in oakland, where employees are still recovering from a break-in that took place last month during which the suspect stole a cash register and an atm. a man who represents the alley piano bar hopes that the city follows through on any promises made at these town halls. a lot of small businesses in oakland can probably understand when i say that i am a little bit skeptical until i see results. people need to feel reassured, and they need to know what steps steps are being taken. as you can see on your screen, the five town halls are in the evening from 530 until 730. again, the first one tonight. beth eden church, the fifth and final one a week from

5:32 am
this very unusual storm system, this area of low pressure dropping down the coast, and it's bringing in some spotty rain just to our north as far as temperatures, it will be in the low to mid 70s and a few upper 70s for the south county. we're up to 80 in gilroy today, and it's going to be breezy and becoming mostly cloudy as our highs head for 75 in danville and 73 in hayward and in san mateo. some low 70s there. san francisco in the 60s with breezy winds and the north bay. that's where we'll see our best chance of rain. and that begins to really increase later on this evening. we'll talk about the weekend coming up. but mike, so far, so good for the commute. yeah. you look over here at the fremont camera. we actually see some pricing here for the toll lanes. i was going to tell folks what the prices were as you pull it to full screen, but no need because you don't need those toll lanes. everything is moving. clearly that comes down southbound with those headlights in through milpitas, out of fremont. the arrow shows you a typical buildup that would happen even on a friday morning,
5:33 am
and we do see a little bit of sensor slowing right around oakland road that's kicked in over the last two minutes. and so that is the start, right on time for the south bay. there's a new crash reported over here. see up in the upper right corner there's a crash happening out of the altamont pass waiting to get more detail as chp arrives. not a major disturbance. and there's your typical little bit of slowing highway 37 at the top of the screen, as still slow getting toward the golden gate bridge as you pass by the marina and the presidio. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. well, happening later this morning. we could learn if the cost of what you borrow will go down. and if so, by how much? today in the bay's bob redell joining us live this morning, the head of the federal reserve, bob, will speak at seven. the markets will be listening as well. that's correct. we are expected to hear from the head of the federal reserve, jerome powell. good morning to you, marcus. that will be at a gathering of central bankers from around the world. this will be in jackson hole, wyoming. expected to speak
5:34 am
at 7:00 this morning. previously, powell has used his speech to talk about broader policy initiatives and could hint about future cuts in the federal interest rate. cnbc reports that it is unlikely his remarks will contain any news, though that is startling. our sister network points out the stock market already believes that for the first time in more than four years, the fed will start cutting rates next month. we're talking about in september and will continue to do so into the new year. the question is whether that september cut in rates will be a quarter or a half point. now, the fed has held its key overnight borrowing rate in place for the past 13 months following a series of aggressive hikes. here's nbc's senior business correspondent christine romans this morning on the today show. you know, this is an important speech, and it's not a boring old economy speech. this is a really important new phase for all of our money for american, the american kitchen table here, because i think the fed chief is going to highlight the fight against inflation. you
5:35 am
know that prices have been coming down in some cases and inflation has been slowing, but also the economy is still sturdy overall, meaning they can start cutting interest rates. and that will put some that will that will relieve some pressure on american household budgets. the federal reserve began raising rates a number of years ago to try to bring down inflation to closer to 2%, while not causing a recession in the process. if the fed does start cutting rates next month, that could lead to borrowing costs for people to trying to buy things like cars and houses. it could lead those borrowing costs to come down. reporting live, bob redell today in the bay. what about the interest rate potentially going down? all ears are like what? what? all right. thanks so much, bob. 5.35 right now. it was an historic night in chicago. the democratic national convention came to an end with vice president kamala harris accepting the party's nomination for president. today, the candidates start a 74 day sprint
