6:02 am
to keep the cool weather today with more clouds rolling in for the afternoon. we're all starting out mostly in the upper 50s and low 60s. a light wind and the wind is calming down. it did get quite gusty yesterday. we're going to see temperatures in the low 70s for a high today in oakland and 75 in martinez. in concord today, 78 degrees with some upper 70s in the south county for this afternoon. some spots may get a little rain. we're going to be talking more about that coming up. but mike, you're starting with slowing on the bay bridge. yeah. well we do have some slower driving on the span itself. the metering lights just activated. so it is friday, but it's a fall pattern friday meaning the schools are back in. so that's when i judge the changes of the seasons here. so we do see some slowing on the span itself and approaching the city. basically, after you pass by treasure island, look at that. those lights are starting to slow a little bit just because of the volume there. no major concerns, but you can see it on the map here highway 37 also. but friday light shows you highway 4 an easy flow of traffic and south of there also

very easy. back to you. thank you very much, mike. history made on the closing night of the democratic national convention. kamala harris formally accepted the democratic nomination for president, making her the first woman of color ever to top a major party ticket. today, in the bay's damian trujillo was on the floor as that historic moment played out. he has this report from chicago. the crowd was electric all four days here in chicago. delegates are calling this an overwhelming success. by all measures, kamala harris arrived on stage to a thunderous roar. the delegates here have been waiting for this night. all week they have been loud, they've been celebrating. and in the end, tonight, after a week of surprises and stars, everyone's focus was on the main event. the official nomination acceptance by kamala harris. the first time in history a black woman has been nominated for president by a major political party. i promise to be a president for all americans. you can always trust me. while democrats celebrate four days of
6:04 am
party unity, party leaders say today is the day to get to work. it's back to pushing for every democrat to get out, get loud and vote. and what many say will be a sprint to election day. we can't take anything for granted. i mean, we're feeling pretty optimistic. i am hopeful, but the election is not in the bag. we have got to go out and work. what has to happen on friday? well, on friday will span back out throughout the country. back on the ground, speaking to the american people. and so they've tapped the gavel here in chicago. the convention is over. we're in chicago. i'm damian trujillo today in the bay. well, president biden and the first lady spoke with vice president kamala harris last night ahead of her big speech. they called her from santa barbara county. this is where they're currently vacationing during last night's speech. harris praised president biden for his work while in office and while history was happening in chicago. back here in the bay area, huge source of pride for east bay neighborhoods

where kamala harris grew up. harris was born in oakland, and she was raised in berkeley, where she attended thousand oaks elementary school. she often credits her first grade teacher for what she calls a lifelong impact. school leaders there saying that harris is an inspiration for students and staff. for me, it's really exciting to think where these students are going to go, right where. who are my future presidents? they might be running these halls right now, and that's that's what gets me fired up. harris is among the first group of children participating in berkeley's school desegregation program. that program was part of bussing, and this is where she was bussed from her home in the flatlands to her school in the hills. at the same time, kamala harris addressed the dnc, former president donald trump addressed followers on truth social. there, he laid out a series of posts attacking his opponent. among the issues he raised, harris's economic strategy, her position on immigration and housing costs. at one point, he
6:06 am
even pointed out her running mate, tim walz, was not a coach but an assistant coach. in another post, he wrote in all caps, quote, lying again about project 2025, which she knows, and so do all democrats that i have absolutely nothing to do with. if you don't know, that's a gop blueprint. leaders laid out at the republican national convention. in another, he said, quote, a lot of talk about childhood. we've got to get to the border inflation and crime. stay with us for the very latest on air and online. we'll have an entire page dedicated to the election. just head to nbcbayarea.com. well, new overnight firefighters are still trying to determine what caused an early morning fire that heavily damaged this empty building in oakland. the first calls went out a little after 1 a.m, and the oakland fire department later posted this video from dennison and cotton streets near interstate 880. now this is the same building where a buttercup cafe recently shut down. firefighters say no one was injured. and happening tonight, oakland mayor sheng

oakland can probably understand when i say that i am a little bit skeptical, until i see results. people need to feel reassured and they need to know what steps steps are being take. as you can see on your screen, the five town halls are in the evening from 530 until 730. the first one tonight at beth eden church in oakland. the fifth and final one a week from tonight. we did reach out to the mayor's office for more specifics about these events, but no one was available for comment. reporting live bob redell. today in the bay. a lot of people have a lot of questions there. all right, bob, thank you. 607 on your friday morning and while we'd like to look at you guys, we want to take a live look outside over san francisco because it is the start of our weekend. okay. a lot of us got to get through the workday, but that's okay. it's upon us. kerry has got a look at our forecast. how are we

looking? look at this sunrise. laura, we are starting out. just beautiful here in the tri valley. a few clouds and also a lot of orange and yellows there as the sun comes up and we're going to start out with some mild temperatures and then start to see it become mostly cloudy, kind of the reverse of our usual pattern with highs in the low 70s. that's much lower than what we typically see for august as we get this very unusual cold front moving into the bay area. and it may also bring in some spotty showers later on this evening into early tomorrow. as far as our highs for today, it's going to be in the low 70s for vacaville, 75 for martinez, palo alto will see a high of 75 there and 77 in morgan hill. now tomorrow, once the sky begins to clear out, temperatures will warm up a little bit more with highs in the mid 70s for the inland east bay. we'll talk about the return of summer heat in just a few minutes, but right now mike is tracking some of those lower gas prices around the bay, doing what we can to
6:10 am
find you the best deal for the south bay. let's go to cupertino's best. that's 385 at cupertino car wash on north deanza boulevard. but if you're planning a getaway and maybe it takes you to the north through vallejo, one of the best deals there is 395 at jagger gas on serrano drive. meanwhile, big contrast in prices. look at this between the bottom two. this is in san ramon. the best i could find on gasbuddy.com. it's at national petroleum as well. but this time it's for 24 at the shop on san ramon valley boulevard. so big changes, big variety of prices. all big reporting area though for gasbuddy.com on the roadways. we are looking at a pretty light friday. a typical friday i should say, with lighter traffic flow. we do have the bay bridge now with the metering lights on and slowing across the span. i've circled over on the right side a crash that just popped up on 680 and still a little bit north of. 242. we'll check that there's no slowing yet, but again, we'll get the details. meanwhile, at the bay bridge, the metering lights, as i said, are on, but the backup is not
6:11 am
visible yet in our camera. it's just across the span itself. once you narrow those lanes and head into san francisco, back to you. thanks, mike. a painful message now being delivered by the u.s. postal service. a new round of cuts are needed to save billions of dollars. coming up, the changes being considered in the rural communities that may feel it the most. plus, let's just say there are a whole lot less beers on the wall. an up close look at one family's expensive and expensive collection going viral. but square cut or pear shaped, these rocks don't lose their shape. diamonds are a girl's best friend. marilyn monroe once sang about it. diamonds being a girl's best friend. well, how about cozying up to this big rock just ahead on today in the bay? the history it is making and the details behind the recent discovery. big block of ice there. i'll take it.

changes ahead coming up in a few minutes. and fridays are usually a break in the morning backup as well. that's what we see. north 101 here. typical slowing area. but the timing well, it's a little shorter to live this morning. that's the first slowing. we see where the arrow is. that's cleared comes back again in about a half an hour. we're looking at the bay bridge toll plaza where the metering lights are on. i'll show you those changes and some slowing elsewhere in the east bay. wall to wall street and a live look at the futures this morning. and stocks are set to open higher. this as traders await a major policy speech today from federal reserve chairman jerome powell. now the hope is that he will actually signal future interest rate cuts and perhaps limit clues about the size of the frequency of those cuts. the markets face pressure. yesterday, the dow fell more than 175 points. s&p dropping 1%. the nasdaq had its worst day since the recent global selloff. the united states postal service is proposing a novel plan to save money, but rural areas will

most likely feel it. most postmaster louis dejoy is proposing to slow down mail delivery in areas with smaller populations. it's part of a plan to save $3 billion annually. he says delivery time for 75% of first class mail would not be affected. if the plan gets approved next month, the changes would take place next year. and right here, the new this morning united states postal service is proposing yet again, this is the story that laura just read because it was so good. you need to hear it again. yeah, but if you didn't hear it. postal. louis dejoy is actually proposing slowing down the mail delivery in those areas and smaller populations, all part of that plan to save $3 billion annually. he says delivery time for 75% of the first class mail would not be affected if that plan is next month, those changes will take place next year, so they're not going to get as much mail, but you're going to get double the stories. hey, trending this morning, one company shining bright after the discovery of a massive diamond.
6:17 am
this is remarkable. i have to even look this up. it happens to be one of the largest rough diamonds ever unearthed. now, for starters, it is nearly 2500 carats. yes, 2500 carats. and it was found in botswana. this is the second largest diamond ever found there. experts say it symbolizes botswana's continued ascent of the global leader in diamond production there. wow. so big. yeah. the last one sold. it was smaller. sold for 63 million. wow that is amazing. doesn't even look real. just like ice there. okay, so some people collect things like stamps, diamonds, maybe. but a delaware family put together a massive collection of beer cans, bottles and growlers. paul ostrowski started this collection back in 1969. it fills up an entire basement. it is still growing, and among them is the first budweiser can from newark, that is, from the 1930s. now all the containers are empty
6:18 am
so they don't soil or explode. you know, in the best interest. paul assures everyone that he did not drink them all by himself. i'll come home many days and there will be two empty cans in my mailbox. there will be three by the front steps. everybody knows i collect. everyone's contributing. paul says his wife doesn't even drink beer. but she says as long as the collection stays down in the basement, he's okay with it and he has to dust it. are okay. spoken like a true wife, right? that's his man cave, right? we do that. we collect them. but it's like every other week. and then they come by with the recycling. oh, exactly. yeah. so you do your part. i do my part. yeah. not with the beers, necessarily. the pop. all right. all right, well, look, stepping outside today, if you're old enough and responsible, you can take a nice, cool drink. i was wondering where this was going. i was like, wait, what? well, you can drink responsibly. i just want to be clear about that. it's the weekend, so we're going to have some nice weather
6:19 am
and it will also be cooler. so you may be thinking, what is happening here? and it's just not your drink. we're going to see those temperatures in the upper 50s and low 60s as you're heading out the door this morning, mostly cloudy. and this is a look at our highs for today. this is not the morning. we're going to see our temperature up to 68 degrees in san francisco, 73 in novato and napa and 71 in oakland. upper 70s for the inland areas. and that's the warmest we'll see. but tomorrow, as the sky clears, we'll start to see some slight warming with some of the inland valleys, while still staying mild near the coast and in the city and in palo alto, we're going to see a high of 78 degrees and 80 in martinez, and then take a look at sunday. the summer heat comes roaring back and we'll be in the low 90s, getting even hotter for the middle of next week. so we're getting this cool down with this very unusual storm system that's moving down the pacific northwest into the northern
6:20 am
california coast. and this is also bringing in more clouds and rain. and usually in august when we get some rain, it's the remnants of a tropical system. so this is coming in with some cooler temperatures, more clouds and may even bring in a little bit of rain later on. this evening. really, anywhere in parts of the bay area we could at least see some light showers. not expecting a lot of accumulation here, and it clears out for tomorrow starting in the morning. and take a look at antioch and the next ten days. if you're hoping for the end of the summer heat. not yet. we're going to go back to triple digits by next tuesday. such a big change from what we are seeing today and the weekend, but it will be turning hot again next week with a lot more sunshine and san francisco. we'll go from upper 60s to upper 70s, so we'll be just slightly warmer there. mike. now you're looking at that backup for the bay bridge. i'm looking for it. at least there's a little slowing in the backup. maybe at the incline. as the lanes narrow, we lose those lanes. and that's about it. over here, the
6:21 am
metering lights are on. you will have to stop at the metering lights before you get onto the span. that has improved the speed overall. getting across the bridge itself. we do have a little more slowing out of richmond as well at that bridge, but no major surprises now. highway 4 finally showing some break tapping the earlier crash i showed on 680 just north of 242 that cleared without any other explanation. 880 does have more slowing though. just south of san mateo bridge. that's highway 92. we're looking around industrial, where there is a crash and it may be blocking your slow lane. no injuries reported, but that is the start of the slowing. there again, the volume relatively light for this friday. so we're looking at a smooth drive. i think. there we go a little break tap in san jose. so that may be the start of the morning's commute in earnest. back to you. wow. you're so in tune. you're like break tapping right there. thanks, mike. all right. 621 right now, protecting your children's mental health on social media, whether it's facebook, instagram, tiktok or just somewhere else, the five c's experts say that every parent needs to know before your kid logs on, and it's time to

months, following a series of aggressive hikes. here's nbc's senior business correspondent christine romans this morning on the today show. you know, this is an important speech, and it's not a boring old economy speech. this is a really important new phase for all of our money, for american the american kitchen table here, because i think the fed chief is going to highlight the fight against inflation. you know, that prices have been coming down in some cases. and inflation has been slowing, but also the economy is still sturdy overall, meaning they can start cutting interest rates. and that will put some that will that will relieve some pressure on american household budgets. the federal reserve began raising rates a number of years ago to try to bring down inflation closer to 2%, while not causing a recession in the process. if the fed does start cutting rates next month, that could lead to lower borrowing costs for people trying to buy things like cars and houses. reporting live bob redell today in. the bay. well,
