suspending his campaigned. >> i promised the american people that i would withdraw from the race if i became a spoiler. >> reporter: announcing he will now endorse mr. trump. >> i was surprised to discover that we are aligned on many key issues. >> reporter: kennedy suggesting trump offer to enlist him in his administration. he originally launched his white house bid as a democrat. then becoming an independent, saying his principles, including protecting free speech, led him to this decision. >> on the ballot in the battleground states, i would likely hand the election over to the democrats, with whom i disagree on the most existential issues. >> reporter: former president trump thanking his opponent turned ally. >> we just had a very nice endorsement from rfk jr. he's a great guy, respected by everybody. >> reporter: it's a major shift from the harsh words he had for him just a few months ago. >> rfk jr. is a democrat plant,

a radical left liberal who has been put in place in order to help crooked joe biden. >> reporter: kennedy appearing with trump in arizona friday. >> we talked not about the things that separate us, because we don't agree on everything. but on the values and the issues that bind us together. >> reporter: kennedy, a member of a storied family in democratic politics, now endorsing the republican nominee, is already sparking criticism from within his own family. his grandson posting rfk is for sale, works for trump. bedfellows and loving it. kamala harris is for the people. now, kennedy had more traction than your typical third-party candidate. not enough to win, but enough to have an impact. even some of kennedy's supporters, if they move to donald trump, it could have a big effect on such a tight election. >> dasha, there's been all this fallout from the secret service, of course, after the assassination attempt last month. you were there that day.

what are you learning about what's happening to these agents? >> reporter: yeah, laura, that's right. multiple secret service agents have now been put on leave for their actions leading up to and responding to that assassination attempt. we don't know exactly how many and that number could grow, but we do know that one of them is a special agent in charge of the pittsburgh field office who was responsible for coordinating with local law enforcement. >> dasha burns, thank you. vice president kamala harris is spending the weekend away from the trail, after a historic democratic national convention, but the campaign is announcing her next stop in a crucial battleground state, where it plans to go from there. allie raffa is in southern california where president biden is spending his weekend. >> reporter: after a week of pomp and pageantry at the convention, officials say vice president harris and her running mate will take a few days off

and meet up on wednesday for a rally in the battleground of georgia. the newly minted democratic ticket then expected to seize on the convention's energy by hosting multiple fundraisers and barnstorming battleground states right into labor day weekend, a traditional kickoff to the final sprint to november. harris and walz are also slated to sit down for their first joint interview next week, after mounting pressure on harris to lay out more of her policy positions. and while it's still not clear who the sit-down will be with and when, the interview, no doubt, provides an opportunity for the new standard bearer of the democratic party to prove her doubters wrong. >> there's another key moment in this race, it's going to take place september 10th, the first presidential debate between former president trump and the vice president. how is harris expected to prepare for that? >> reporter: well, sources familiar with her planning say that harris has already started holding mock debate sessions at

her alma mater, howard university, to prepare to face off against former president trump, who harris has never met or spoken with in person. the harris team tapping long-time democratic strategist to reprise his role of playing trump during hillary clinton's 2016 campaign for the vice president's prep session. harris campaign officials say she'll take a few days off the campaign trail ahead of debate day, with governor walz taking on a heavier travel schedule in that period. >> on the ground in southern california, thank you very much. to a major announcement on the economy that had an instant impact on the stock market. during a speech in wyoming on friday, federal reserve chairman jerome powell said the time has come to cut interest rates. that's all wall street needed to hear, his comments sending the markets surging. senior business correspondent christine romans is here to break it all down. good morning. >> good morning. >> okay, why now? why is now the time for these cuts? >> the fed chief said the time has come.

that's because they're now more worried about weakening the labor market than inflation coming back. so kind of saying that inflation is not the problem anymore. we want to make sure those high interest rates aren't going to damage the overall economy. the fed chief is trying to orchestrate something called a soft landing. he's trying to kill inflation but not hurt the overall economy. the reaction from wall street, they seem to be thinking he might actually get this done. he might be able to get rid of inflation and still have an overall solid economy. >> let's put this in kitchen table terms for a moment. folks want to know how it's going to impact their bottom line. mortgages, credit card debt, car loans. what does it do on those things? >> it means that lower interest rates are coming. the federal reserve will start cutting interest rates, probably in september. we don't know by how much and how fast. i expect you're going to be on a rate cutting cycle here, which means for anybody borrowing money, companies and households, that borrowed money is going to be cheaper to finance. it means a new car loan or lease will be a little bit less interest. it means a home loan could be a

lot less interest. we've already seen mortgage rates drift down to about 6.4%, i expect that will continue to happen until the end of the year. credit card debt is still a problem. we cannot be putting a lot of credit card debt and not paying those balances because the interest rates are above 20%. i expect those will come down very gradually, if at all. so be careful of the credit card debt. but overall wall street and main street will get a bit of a reprieve from higher mortgage rates. >> you think we're out of the woods, the worst of it? >> i hope so. that's what wall street is saying. there are risks with the middle east, with oil prices, we're watching this canadian rail dispute that looks like it's coming to a conclusion, but there are always risks there. there are always things to worry about in the economy. but it looks pretty decent here right now. it looks as though you're going to have interest rates coming down, and hopefully, the underlying economy stays solid. >> good news. i like the good news.

a critical day ahead for nasa. the space agency is set to announced the how long those two astronauts stranded on the international space station may be there. nbc's marissa parra has been watching the story. >> reporter: a roughly ten-day mission in space is now 80 days and counting. we've been wondering for months when and how butch and sonny will come home. consider today decision day. there have been two main issues since starliner launched its test early june. nasa has been using weeks to get all the data they can, including ground testing in new mexico to make the decision that we have been waiting for. will butch and sonny come home on starliner or hitch a ride through space x? >> they might be in space longer because the mission isn't supposed to come home any earlier than february. but just to put this into perspective for us, sonny and

butch have been on the international space station, in space for 80 days. frank rubio currently holds the longest record for an american astronaut in space, his for over a year. while butch and sonny assure us they're doing fine, they're staying busy, probably not a contest they're actively trying to win. we're going to find out today at 1:00, peter. >> hope they get netflix up there. marissa, appreciate you. thank you. jumping overseas now to a critical new round of cease-fire talks in the middle east. hamas is sending a delegation to cairo today for new negotiations aimed at ending the violence that's raged on in that region since the october terror attack on israel. we're live in jerusalem with the latest. >> reporter: a hamas delegation is arriving in cairo to be briefed on talks that have been held since thursday between

american, israeli, qatari and egyptian officials. the line is that there's progress and the talks are constructive. for the people of gaza, for the family members of the hostages, they have heard this over and over again, without any resolution. there are two main sticking points here that involve two corridors. one corridor is a road between east and west. if israel maintains its presence there, it would effectively prevent the free movement of palestinians on their own land, and it would cut the enclave in half. the other issue, of course, is the philadelphi corridor, the buffer zone between egypt and gaza. israel wants to maintain a presence there as well to prevent the smuggling in of weapons and hamas has said it will not agree to a deal that won't see the full withdraw of israeli forces. now, meanwhile, there have been 12 evacuation orders so far in gaza just this month, and, of course, the month of august isn't even over yet.

thanks for joining us on this saturday, august 24th. i'm kyra clapper. bart is expected to be back up and running this morning after major delays last night. late overnight trains were being turned back to san francisco from multiple stations in the east bay. this is video from the macarthur station. the gates shut late last night. service was stopped between the ashby, west oakland, rockridge and lake merritt stations. bart blaming an equipment problem on the track that was near the macarthur station. bus bridges helped get the stranded passengers where they needed to be. you may remember earlier this week, a bart train was evacuated at the macarthur bart station in oakland. riders say they heard a popping sound and saw smoke coming from one of the back train cars. bart officials later said it was not a fire, but an equipment failure on the train. it's unclear if last night's issue was related on the peninsula. home video captures the moment a group of burglars target a pacifica neighborhood.

it happened in the early morning hours of wednesday on heathcliffe drive. police tell us about 20 cars were hit. in this video, you can see the thieves going from car to car down the street with a dark colored suv following them closely behind. the thieves were able to get away. if you were a victim or know anything about this crime, you're asked to call pacifica police. we're going to check in with cinthia pimentel now with a quick look at our microclimate forecast. some unusual weather early this morning. definitely this is our little fake fall. we're going to call it kira. definitely feel that cool down yesterday. maybe even got some spotty rain. and we continue to deal with that as we take this picture of satellite and radar showing us those rain returns we see even being detected. some lightning up to the eureka coast and a light dusting of snow for the sierra. right now we do have some slick roads up into the north bay, parts of union city out towards livermore, so just be careful on that. we'll talk about what the rest of the weekend has in store. coming up at seven. back to you. we'll see

that was after the 23-year-old black man answered repeated knocks at his apartment door by coming out with a handgun pointed to the ground. authorities say he was sent to the home in response to a domestic disturbance report that turned out to be false. he is facing up to 30 years in prison. sad news this morning. the beloved baseball stadium featured in the '90s hollywood classic "a league of their own" has been destroyed in a fire. officials say the historic jay littleton ballpark in california went down in flames late thursday night. investigators say the cause of that fire is not yet known, but the wooden grandstand built in 1937 likely burned very quickly. it was a popular movie setting in addition to "a league of her own," the films, "eight men out" and "the babe ruth story" were also shot there. l.a. dodgers superstar shohei ohtani made major league history last night. he became the fastest to hit

east/southeast of the big island of hawaii. winds at 60 miles per hour right now. we expect some intensification here as we go through the short term. we've also got hurricane gilma, winds at 100 miles an hour, category 2. southwest of the baja, california, peninsula. for hawaii, we'll likely see additional rain, maybe some gusty winds, but that's going to be from hone. notice it does, by the time we get to sunday, start to become a hurricane. even between now and then, that's when the rain, maybe a little wind, up to 5 to 10 inches of rain could be problematic for folks there. otherwise, we're not going to worry about gilma. this is going to dissipate, and we don't have impacts from that. back on the mainland, we've got cool and unsettled conditions in the pacific northwest. hot for the mid

introducing whole body deodorant from dove. saturday morning with your health. this morning, we've got a roundup of some of the week's biggest medical stories. >> from new covid boosters to a nasal spray for people with serious allergies to pox, what you need to know to keep your family safe. >> we want to bring in medical contributor dr. natalie azar. nice to have ya. >> thanks for having me. >> the fda this week announced it has approved the new covid vaccine from, what, moderna and pfizer? >> that's right. >> a lot of people wondering if this is the right time to take it, if they should still be getting the shot at all. what's your advise? >> yeah, yeah. the fda's approval this past week actually was three weeks earlier than they approved the booster last year. this is really as a consequence of the significant summer surge we've seen over the last couple of months.

so the updated shot from pfizer and moderna is covering what's called the kp strain. that's just -- kp2 strain, another omicron variant. we've had many of these the last couple years. 32 states right now in the country are reporting high levels of viral activity in their wastewater. definitely an important development. in terms of who should be getting the vaccine, well, of course, we always talk about the groups most at risk. people immunocompromised, people 65 and older, pregnant persons. if you're wondering, should i be getting the shot right now, because of the summer surge, a lot of people were infected over the last couple of months. if you recently had an infection, we are recommending you can wait three to four months before getting the shot. if you're at high risk, the high-risk groups i mentioned, you will probably want to get it pretty much when it becomes available, which will probably be next week. if you're low to moderate risk, the recommendation is to get it at the same time you'd get the flu shot, the end of october. we know the protection, while it's sort of at its peak a month after you get the shot, wanes

significantly over the months. we are really expecting a winter surge again. >> worth noting the biden administration has announced it is going to be making more of those free covid tests available, by the way, this september, right? >> talk to us about this new nasal spray. >> yes. >> it seems like a potential game changer for people who really don't like shots. >> right. the standard of care for treat ing this is epinephrine, epipen. there is a nasal spray version of epinephrine. this is fantastic. it's literally something you'd spray into the nostril of yourself or someone having an allergic reaction. this is approved for individuals over 66 pounds. >> not for kids. >> not for little ones. the company hopes by the end of the year to have one for 33 pounds and over. it is two single doses in a little pack, and it'll be available by the end of september. what are the advantages here? there are significant numbers of people who are needle averse.

this is a nasal spray. it is small, smaller than an iphone. put it in your pocket. storage wise, it'll be good for up to two years. it doesn't -- it's not dependent on the temperature of the room that it is being supplied in, which is really good. one drawback, and i need to mention this, is it hasn't necessarily been studied in the real world because you can't really conduct that study. they basically determined the efficacy by saying the level of epinephrine in the blood was the same with the spray. if you have severe allergic reactions and you have the nasal spray, you might still want the epipen with you until we get the real-world evidence. it should be available by the end of september. >> we literally have a few seconds. how worried should we be for mpox? >> the average person in the country, there's no need for immediate alarm, but we want people to be aware of what is going on. for the second time in two years, the world health

organization declared a global health public emergency because of the mpox. there is a strain circulating wildly in africa, and it has been noted in a couple of other countries outside of africa. important, a couple things. if you had the mpox vaccine a few years ago and/or were infected with that strain two years ago, you are still protected now. secondly, if you are not vaccinated but you've been exposed, there is a recommendation that you can get the mpox vaccine within the first four days after exposure, which should prevent illness. between 4 and 14 days later, it should prevent serious illness if you are exposed and not vaccinated. >> dr. azar, always great advice. thank you so much. >> you bet. coming up in "pop start," it's a bieber baby. justin bieber's wife, hailey, oh-ho-ho, look at that jet stream. us on this saturday, august 24th. i'm kira klapper. santa clara county is asking for help finding an invasive beetle. the shot hole borer is only the size of a sesame seed, but is known to attack more than 65 species of trees in california, and the tiny beetles have been found in san jose. county officials are asking people to help identify trees that are infested. the beetles leave behind tiny round holes that can eventually kill trees. anyone who finds an infested tree is asked to call an arborist to help remove it. mount diablo just got a lot safer for cyclists. today, the park will celebrate the installation of 22 new bike turnouts through public donations, california state parks raised about $750,000 to install the new turnouts, bringing the total number up to 67. rangers credit the bike turnouts for reducing collisions on mount diablo by 80%. the opening is today at 10 a.m. also
