you it is sunday, august 25th. we are taking a live look outside at the sun shining in san francisco on a lovely morning. compared to the rain we were seeing at this time yesterday morning, putting the sun in sunday. thank you so much for starting it with us. i'm kira klapper cinthia pimentel has a quick peek at our microclimate forecast. and you said it was a preview of fall yesterday and we'd be going back to summer. and here we are. definitely we've made it to the second half of the weekend with better conditions, and we're back to where we should be for august. i wanted to share this cool picture of the golden gate bridge. if you look really closely, just under the towers, we see the fog starting to mix out. it's that warm air over the cool bay waters that is just really lovely. so i wanted to share with you this morning, 57 to start our day. lots more sunshine and temperatures in the city 70 by the time that you get your foot out the door for lunch or brunch, we are looking at a warming trend in san jose 60 degrees right now, and we'll do

80s downtown for the silicon valley pride parade out there this later this morning. we are going to be looking at a warmer day for today and just climbing those temperatures from there, some 90s to possibly triple digit temperatures. i'll show you the full forecast coming up in a few minutes. kira back to you. all right. cynthia, thanks. a battle is brewing between neighbors in the north bay and street vendors. people in san rafael tell us they are pleading with city leaders to address problems they're having with smoke and noise. they told today in the bay's alyssa goard that the food vendors are there late into the night, and it's taking a toll. matthew smith was excited when, eight months ago, several street vendors began selling on the sidewalk across from his apartment on b street near downtown san rafael. because i'm a huge fan of tacos, he says, the vendors are there around five days a week from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m, but smith and three of his neighbors told us

the stands are now impacting their lives from smoke wafting into their apartments to late night music and noise stopping them from sleeping to a growing rat population. they provided this photo of one dead rat they say they spotted nearby loud music, a smell you kind of have to have. strong and through our windows we don't have ac and the music and the traffic. this, the rats, the loud music, the smell, the smoke. i mean, i'm i'm done. neighbors say they've complained to the city, to the county and even state officials. but things haven't changed. the vendors declined to speak with us on camera, but said they don't think they're doing anything wrong. they said police came by friday night and told them they needed to move so that they weren't blocking the street. smith says that police told him there are capabilities in order to address the actual food vending was quite limited. we reached out to the city and city leaders for comment, but have

not heard back. neighbors say they just want some sleep and to see a response from their local leaders. obviously, everybody likes tacos, right? mexican tacos? who doesn't? but i don't think this is the right place for them to be. alyssa goard today in the bay we are learning more about the massive sideshow that started in vallejo and went across the east bay on friday night. we first told you this story yesterday morning. it started about midnight friday. stunt driving was reported at louis brown drive near b williams drive in vallejo. multiple agencies responded as drivers were spinning donuts and drifting a ring of fire in the middle there. nearby police also investigated a deadly shooting. right now, it's still not confirmed if the shooting and the sideshow were related. later, that sideshow appeared to move to crockett, richmond and then oakland. vallejo leaders tell nbc bay area it's an ongoing problem for many cities. you have 300 or 400 or 500 cars.

i don't care how large your police department is, it's not going to be enough. you're going to have to have outside help. and i think there are many things legislatively that need to be done as well. i would love to see the penalty increased. richmond police also responded to at least two other sideshows. officers were able to quickly disperse that group at one show, but later at another location, more cars got involved, police say. while they tried to break up that group, one driver tried to hit officers before speeding off and leading police on a short chase. that driver was arrested. take a look at this unique arrest. while vallejo police broke up that sideshow, a pursuit started with chp and people from the sideshow in a ct6. it started as the people in the car pointed lasers at officers. the pursuit ended in hercules. four people were arrested and they all caught an abandoned ten foot python inside

that car. now to another follow up. police have someone in custody in connection with that deadly shooting in dublin. we reported on yesterday morning. a man was shot and killed in broad daylight friday afternoon at the emerald park apartments on hacienda drive in dublin. yesterday, investigators announced officers detained a person of interest in the city of barstow that's in southern california, about 100 miles east of la. on the way to palm springs, detectives are working to confirm that person's involvement. they have not yet released the identity of that victim or that person of interest. another postal worker robbed at gunpoint. it happened yesterday in broad daylight on bowman court in san francisco's india basin neighborhood. police say the worker was approached just before noon by two people with a gun. it's not clear what they stole, but mail, keys have been the target before. police say the thieves sped off in a

car. we have seen a rash of similar robberies all across the bay area tr. we've been reporting from san carlos to palo alto and santa clara, across the bay to dublin, danville and oakland. san francisco police are offering a reward for tips in this latest case. a firefighter was hurt after battling a house fire in san jose yesterday. firefighters got the call around three yesterday afternoon. when they responded, they found a townhome burning on cicero way that's in the evergreen community of san jose. firefighters say at one point, 40 to 50 first responders were on scene. the injured firefighter was burned on the face and ears. nobody else was hurt. although two dogs died in the fire. 14 people in all are displaced. the cause of that fire is under investigation. we turn now to the conflict between israel and hezbollah in lebanon. it is escalating. this video

shows missiles flying over the northern border of israel. hezbollah which is backed by iran, says it launched the attack with a large number of drones and retaliation for israel killing one of its commanders last month. also, in response to israeli air strikes, just hours before which israel described as preemptive. the white house says president biden is monitoring the situation now to. stuck in space, two astronauts, as we've been reporting, went up to the international space station on boeing's starliner two months ago. it was supposed to be eight days, and now we've learned they will return home eight months later on a different spacecraft. that's the decision nasa made yesterday as today in the bay marianne favro reports. elon musk's spacex will play a role in getting the crew back to earth, nasa says, because of major issues on the boeing

starliner, it was too risky to bring the astronauts home on it. with a decision up in the air for weeks, nasa astronauts butch wilmore and suni williams now know when and how they'll return to earth. nasa has decided that butch and sunny will return with crew nine next february. the two astronauts were on boeing's starliner's historic launch in june, the first with a crew. what was supposed to be an eight day mission on the international space station will now last eight months. now, a spacex dragon capsule. boeing's biggest competitor will give them a ride home. nasa announced its decision saturday. it was just too much risk, but the crew and so we decided to pursue the uncrewed test flight. the troubled starliner had two major problems helium leaks and thruster issues. bay area congresswoman zoe lofgren, a ranking member of the house

science, space and technology committee, issued a joint statement with congressman erik sorensen saying, quote, we commend nasa and boeing's commitment to prioritizing safety. we thank astronauts wilmore and williams for their heroic teamwork, patience and flexibility on the crew flight test mission, and we look forward to their safe return home. the concerning events leading to today's decision, however, must be understood and addressed. boeing released a statement saying it continues to focus first and foremost on the safety of the spacecraft. here we are in the front of the international space station. nasa says the two astronauts will have plenty of supplies to last until february. as for the starliner, nasa says the empty capsule will head back to earth, likely in early september. but nasa leaders say they anticipate the starliner will fly with a crew again in the future. the spacex crew nine flight is scheduled to lift off on

some of the takeaways? well, one of the big takeaways is that senator vance insisted that he and former president donald trump, if elected, would not support a federal abortion ban. i pushed him, though, because we've heard some of that from them before. i said, okay, let's assume this arrives on donald trump's desk as a piece of actual legislation. would he veto it? he said yes. he'd veto it. it is a shift because, of course, he supported. and jd vance has been very clear that he supports a federal abortion ban. i got to interview senator elizabeth warren right after jd vance. she said she doesn't buy that. she believes that they'll do whatever is possible to strip that away. but it's just a very notable shift. it's a recognition of this moment and of just how difficult and challenging this issue is for republicans right now, something that donald trump has acknowledged to allies. i also talked to him about immigration, pressed him on whether there would be family separations if they were to enact their mass

nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston for our weekly segment. we'll take a look at that sprint to the white house and have a look at what issues will be popping up on top of voters minds as they choose who to vote for. the gates to burning man are back open this morning after organizers temporarily closed things down because of rain. the event starts today in nevada's black rock desert. any rain will cause a firm halt to all vehicle traffic because it turns that dusty playa, as it's known, into thick, sticky mud. you might remember it from last year, organizers reopened the gate yesterday afternoon, and now they're telling festival goers to expect backups at thousands of people make their way to burning man. last year at burning man, as mentioned, that heavy rain created extremely muddy conditions in the desert. this video from the final day of the burn last summer. the mud is so thick it was nearly impossible to walk or drive.

thousands of attendees were stranded. one of our nbc bay area photographers is actually at burning man right now, and spoke with one person who says, so far, this year's rain isn't bad and actually really good. i don't think this is a detriment at all. this will actually help a lot. the bumps are bad out here, the dust was bad out here and both of those will get better with this. the festival kicks off today and wraps up next weekend with the burning of the man saturday night and the temple sunday at dusk. but winter-like weather is already making an appearance not far from black rock desert in the sierra. check out this video from north star. this is yesterday. snow on august 24th. a number of resorts, including kirkwood, reported snow and heavy winds. now to joan. it was upgraded to a category one hurricane and is swirling closer to hawaii's big island. a tropical storm warning remains

in effect for hawaii island, and residents could see 6 to 12in of rain. joan is also forecast to bring life threatening surf and rip currents. the governor of hawaii proclaimed a state of emergency yesterday that is expected to be in effect through tomorrow. also yesterday, all remaining round trip flights between honolulu and hilo were canceled. an annual tradition returned to oakland's chinatown. hundreds came out for the 35th year of the street festival. yesterday, oakland mayor sheng thao was at the opening ceremony, along with other elected and community leaders. the festival features what you would expect of a vibrant cultural celebration performances, vendors, food, activities and more. the festival continues today. it's centered on ninth and franklin streets in downtown oakland. we here at nbc bay area and telemundo 48 are celebrating ten years of helping to clear the

shelters. yesterday, we partnered with the santa clara county animal services center in san martin for a big adoption event. there we are. cynthia and i were there along with chris kamara, jamar lopez, carlos eustis, who else was there? i'm trying to think so many of us. fernandez. yes. jessica gallegos dygert from telemundo 60 pets found homes yesterday. a number of bay area shelters are offering special adoption fees. that includes the peninsula humane society through september 10th. anyone who wants to can name their own adoption fee for huskies. we found congressman kevin mullin and his family. they decided to help clear the shelters. yesterday, adopted this rescue husky named storm on september seventh. you can name your own fee for more than 100 animals currently at the shelter in burlingame. and we have a great update. yesterday we had two dogs on our show. kira klapper there she is! and scott mcgrew from valley humane

those sunday scaries as well. kira we are starting off with clear skies around the bay area. beautiful sunday sunshine, a bit cooler up into the north bay. 52, san rafael 53 and danville. good morning 59. in mountain view and sunny 60s down here in san jose. maybe you got a new furry friend and you want to take them out for a hike. i would recommend to do it maybe before 10:11 a.m. as we start to climb those temperatures in the east bay into the upper 70s a few low 80s, because into the afternoon it might be too warm for their paws. we'll see some upper 80s there in the east bay, as well as the similar trend down here in the south bay. 86 in cupertino, mid 80s downtown san jose to those upper 80s in gilroy. as we go on into 89 degrees, we continue that trend. our microclimates will be pretty similar in the east bay. some 80s for oakland and down into fremont, upper 80s walnut creek to some low 90s in antioch. over on into the peninsula. it will be some gorgeous beach weather

today in half moon bay, 68 degrees to 76, in san mateo. low 80s for palo alto, the city. look at all of this in the 70s on the board from the marina to the mission 76 to the upper 60s in the outer sunset. we continue with that warm weather. it's a gorgeous day up in wine country. it will do some upper 80s for napa to santa rosa and ukiah coming in at 89 degrees. drink lots of water and enjoy that beautiful beach day out in point reyes. i've got you at 72 for today. we're going to just bump up those numbers though, as we go on into our workweek. kids are back in school. you might be working outdoors as we transition into the fall months, so we really need to be careful of this warm weather that's in store. i think monday will really start to heat things up upper 80s and seconds for our valleys 70s by the bay shore, but tuesday will be the tastiest day of the week as we see those temperatures near that triple digit mark. in some places you can see up in vacaville and fairfield down into san martin.

90s will also continue for santa rosa and the seconds for the peninsula. as we go on into the second half of the week, wednesday and beyond, we still look at those temperatures in the 90s. it will be slight cooling as we go on into the weekend, and inch closer to september. san francisco will also be mild, so mild san francisco means the heat is inland. yeah definitely. and i can't even believe we're almost in september. i don't know, i know, i don't know what to say either. i know my kids are back in school, but i still can't believe it. all right, cynthia, thanks so much. 722 right now we have much more ahead on today in the bay and coming up, we needed this. the giants get that bounce back win against the mariners. but how did they do it with their star pitcher only going threinnings.e

right. thanks. now that former president donald trump and vice president kamala harris have both officially accepted their party's presidential nominations, the race for the president enters its final phase. early voting already begins in six states next month. nbc's aaron gilchrist has the latest on the sprint to november 5th. the nominees for president begin the final sprint to the election. the timeline is shrinking, with early voting starting next month in at least six states, including the crucial battleground of pennsylvania. the harris campaign announcing plans to take a bus tour through the battleground state of georgia next week, targeting black working class rural and suburban voters. both campaigns already looking beyond the election to january, setting up presidential transition teams as required by law. nbc news has learned the federal government is set to offer them office space and resources to start transition planning on tuesday. thank you, president trump. meanwhile, president trump rallying in

arizona. who gave that right to me, appearing with robert f kennedy jr just hours after he suspended his independent run for president. here's a lot of votes that he could have gotten. i think he's going to have a huge influence. we're leading now, but i think he's going to have a huge influence on this campaign. kennedy's exit from the race a potential game changer this election with thousands of his supporters now looking for a place to go. what's the potential impact on the harris campaign? yeah, we're just looking at a sliver of the electorate, 4 to 5% who were backing rfk jr in the polls. but just a slight difference could make all the difference in a race with only ten weeks to go every day and every vote matters to me. and i'm happy standing. that was aaron gilchrist reporting. a firefighter was injured while battling this house fire yesterday in the south bay. when san jose fire

crews responded around three yesterday afternoon, they found a townhome burning on cicero way. as jfrd tells us, at one point, upwards of 51st responders were on scene that injured firefighter was burned on the face and on the ears. two dogs died in the fire. 14 people are now displaced. the cause is under investigation. when wildfires spark cal fire response to fight the flames and also to investigate how the fire started. orko manna, from our nbc affiliate in sacramento, takes us behind the scenes to learn how peace officers find the source of the fire on the front lines of a fire. we usually think of hand crews right now they're battling the park fire, the fourth largest wildfire in california history. but they're not the only ones in the thick of it. just working in that. that environment itself is difficult. within one day, police caught the man accused of

starting the park fire and the agency behind the arrest may surprise you. do you think people know that there is cal fire police? that you guys even exist? i think in general they they don't. cal fire is law enforcement. we've had peace officers since the inception of the department in 1885. johnny machado is the cal fire police chief. he oversees 200 officers spread out across the state. just like firefighters. the little known group comes close to the flames. their primary job is to start to identify the origin of the fire. any potential witnesses, any physical evidence will be documented. photographs collected just as any other evidence. chief machado says there's a certain thrill to it. everything's burned up in front of you. but actually sitting down and looking at it and looking at what's left and being able to put that puzzle back together. it's not just the big fires currently burning in california that cal fire police respond to. right now, we're in front of weber creek, underneath

highway 50, and this is what they're looking out for to camp fires like this. and then the remnants of this fire, which burned just a couple weeks ago, it's all about trying to stop any fire from spreading central. seven won tom by 2729. cal fire police officers touch base with the unhoused population here due to several fires in this area, we're looking for the encampments that have, like their cooking fires, their fire hazards, walking through the grass fences. they're searching for any issues. the common areas that we know are the people are hanging out and starting fires. we try to make patrols through these areas as frequent as we can. they get back in the car and head to the next patrol location. this potential problem spot is at the cosumnes river near the highway 49 bridge. cal fire police walk toward the water just making sure we didn't have any barbecues or fires going down in the canyon with the with the dry, hot weather.

checking with visitors for any fire hazards and the big concern with starting a fire down here is that the winds that can develop by the water and the vegetation here can cause the flames to go up this canyon quickly. and there's a house right at the top of the hill there where we parked that, you know, the fire can reach up to that house before the first fire engine can get here. back in the office. they're looking through evidence collected from the crosier fire in el dorado county. was there a criminal violation that occurred which might result in a citation or an arrest? if it's something such as arson? cal fire uncovered 162 arsons in 2022, 111 in 2023, and 78 so far this year. it's hard work, but solving the puzzle to catch criminals makes it all worth it. putting all of that together is, i believe, that, you know, the driving force of why we do it. that was orko manna reporting for us. people who live in one north bay community are pleading with city

leaders to address smoke and noise they say has been keeping them awake for nearly a year. and it's all coming from food vendors. it's happening on b street near downtown san rafael. neighbors tell us that loud music smoke drift into their homes six days a week from dinnertime until 1 a.m. and they tell us, despite complaining to the city and even state leaders, it's been continuing for months. one neighbor tells us it's only getting worse because of leftover garbage now attracting rats to their neighborhood. this the rats, the loud music, the smell, the smoke. i mean, i'm i'm done. i think they would be better for them and for us to be moved somewhere else. we reached out to san rafael. city leaders. we have not yet heard back. the vendors didn't want to speak on camera, but tell nbc bay area

further up into ukiah. 80s for oakland. that is a pretty mild day by the bay shore. and as we get closer to the coast, upper 60s, half moon bay and 73 degrees in san francisco. so an overall clear and warmer day compared to the pretty rare august storm that we had friday on into yesterday morning. as we take a look ahead into our workweek final one of august. believe it or not, kyra and i can't as we go on into antioch. checking in over the next couple of days, we see a little bit of a heat wave returning to the bay area. tuesday will definitely be the hottest day out there, as we could be talking about triple digit temperatures and i don't see much relief until we get on into possibly next weekend. so kids are back in school. maybe you're working outside or have to travel in and around the bay. remember to take note of our microclimates because we will see about a 30 degree difference as we travel on into stinson beach. that's gorgeous out there for some beach weather, maybe a chance to reflect and wind down

the city held a grand opening for its new recreation and aquatic center yesterday. it has cutting edge fitness facilities and equipment. it was built with funds san bruno won in a restitution settlement after that deadly pipeline explosion. 14 years ago. you may remember on september 9th, 2010, a pg&e gas line exploded, killing eight people and flattening dozens of homes. the mayor says it will be a place for the community to gather and strengthen their bonds. working back with what we had and what we have today, it is such a gem and a jewel for us as a city and something that we're proud of and personally gives me an awe type feeling to walk through and hear the enthusiasm and the excitement from everybody around the

facility is open seven days a week, monday through friday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and saturdays from 7 to 5, and sundays from noon to five. students across california are scrambling to take the s.a.t. test, and this didn't help. several test centers announced last minute cancellations yesterday. the cancellations happened at ten separate testing sites from saint helena to fairfield. it's not clear how many students were impacted. and this comes after a similar incident back in june. you may remember the test was suddenly canceled at a site in oakland because of wi-fi issues. the college board, which administers the tests, says some centers suddenly decided they needed to close. in a statement, the college board says it doesn't directly control test center availability. the organization says it is working with the test centers to provide make up testing for impacted students. the 2024 presidential

election looks to be a close race between former president donald trump and democratic vice president kamala harris. the economy, inflation and immigration have been cited as the most important issues moving voters. nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston has been studying the most recent data. hi, larry. good morning. great to see you as always. what have you learned? you know, economy, immigration, inflation. yeah everybody talks about it. but you know what? there may be other issues. and we've been peering through the data and it seems like gender and abortion have a whole lot more at stake than we might think otherwise. okay so does does that mean gender, you know, is deciding like who they're going to vote for or what issues matter more to them? they come together. that's the thing. so let's let's look first at gender and presidential choice. that'll give us a good idea about what's going on. you see a poll coming up here in just a second. it

shows you that democrats are much more likely to vote for harris than, than than republicans are likely to vote for trump. so there's a seven point gap in terms of males for trump, there's a 13 point gap in terms of females. for harris. so what do we have here? we have females much more interested in this election, much more interested in voting for harris than we have males interested in voting for trump. now, that's what we call a gender gap kira. and it's always there, but never quite to the extent that we have at this time. it's pretty broad. okay so you're mentioning gender. there but then you also mentioned abortion. so where does that come in. yeah. again this data comes from yougov survey. and we always caution people that these are snapshots. they can change. although as we get closer to the election, people seem to get more comfortable with where they're going. so here we have abortion again okay. how important is abortion? well, yougov went ahead and asked 13 different categories of different issues how how the differences would

go. and there were only 3 or 4 points apart in almost every case. look at this one. there's a 14 point spread here. in other words, women are much more involved and interested in dealing with the abortion issue than men are. men are, but women much more so. so you put together women more likely to vote for harris, women more involved with abortion. and you begin to see that this category abortion becoming very, very important. and we have to add a couple of other things. kira seven states after that famous or infamous dobbs decision, as it was called. right. the one that returned abortion to the states, seven states voted on that issue because of referenda in 2022 and 2023. all seven made abortion a constitutional right. you have ten states now with the same question coming up between now and november, mostly on november 5th. of course, in those cases, the democrats believe between the between the propensity of women to hook up with harris abortion becoming a much more important issue for

women, that this could be a key factor in motivating people to vote and in getting them across the finish line, not only for abortion but also for harris. it's incredibly interesting what you tease the data and look at these crosstabs and i was talking to meet the press, kristen welker, about 30 minutes ago, and she said she touches on this issue with j.d. vance. so that will be interesting to watch that in about ten minutes from now. larry, as always, great to see you. thanks for that this morning. it is 52 past the hour. we'll be right back after this with a quick look at the top stories we're following, including a fight in the north bay street vendors versus neighbors. why they wanthe street vendot rs
