scenes in city streets from oakland to san francisco. a response from police about the motorbike street takeover. also a fundraising frenzy on the campaign trail. kamala harris and donald trump crisscrossing the country in the sprint to the election. the massive influx of cash coming as abortion rights take center stage in the race. plus, helping those trying to make it in the bay. a free grocery store set to open in a matter of hours. we're going to break down how it works, where you can find it, and who's paying the bill. this is today in the bay good monday morning. i'm marcus washington. nice try. nice try. nice and i'm laura garcia. michael, have a look at that. monday morning. yeah, just a little bit. all right. let's get going with the forecast with kari. it's going to be hot today. it was so nice to have a cool down this weekend. hey, we're trying to find the
5:02 am
positives here. we're only going to see this lasting a couple of days, but it will be hotter over the next few days. in the valleys we're looking at temperatures in the mid to upper 90s. high pressure will be turning and it may also impact our air quality. so we're going to see those highs in the low 90s for much of the north bay. with napa today up to 91 degrees. 92 in livermore and 95 in san martin and palo alto. we're in the upper 80s and for san francisco, we are going to see upper 70s. we will reach the peak of the heat in the next couple of days, so we'll talk more about that. mike, you already have a crash happening in fremont. it's on the grid. it's in this area. northbound 880, the taillights. but it actually turns out to be just south of our camera, outside of our view at dixon landing road. no slowing shows up. haven't seen any problems for the flow of traffic that's heading up from 237 up past mission. that's the shot we just showed you. everything else is also pretty much at speed. there's a little bit of slowing over out of the
5:03 am
altamont pass, which is typical. there's a crash in san jose. we'll talk about 880 near the alameda, but the freeway itself is moving smoothly. and then the bay bridge approach is just fine. it's clear over there at the maze. back to you. thank you very much, mike. 502 right now and new overnight. at least three people are dead in ukraine after what's being called russia's largest attack in week. here's what we know so far. russian forces fired drones and missiles at 15 ukrainian regions, covering more than half the nation. explosions were also heard in kyiv, disrupting the capital's power and water supplies. at least 13 people are injured. israel and hezbollah appear to be breaking away from an all out war. this morning, the two sides exchanging heavy fire over the weekend. the cross-border attack started with israel launching what it calls a preemptive strike against hezbollah for planning to launch a large barrage of rockets. the iranian militant group fired more than 300 rockets at israel

in retaliation for the assassination of one of its senior leaders, israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu says that the preemptive strike destroyed thousands of hezbollah rockets. there are no reports of any casualties in israel as a result of the exchange. meanwhile, a u.s. official telling nbc news ceasefire talks in gaza are continuing. so far, the source says that the negotiations have been constructive. hamas says that it is not accepting new conditions from the proposal made in july, and that any new deal must include a permanent ceasefire. this morning, both presidential candidates ramping up their campaigns with just ten weeks to go until the election, former president trump will hit several battleground states this week and fresh off the dnc. vice president harris and governor tim walz are also expected to make campaign stops, as today in the bay's alice barr reports, this all comes ahead of a highly anticipated presidential debate

next month. the conventions behind them, vice president harris and former president trump ready to battle it out in the final ten weeks before election day. we are charting a new way forward. we need to turn the page of four years of calamity and failure. they have had calamity. the former president casting doubt on the next big mile marker, a september 10th debate overnight accusing abc news of biased coverage and questioning why he would debate miss harris on that network. his running mate, ohio senator jd vance, appearing on nbc's meet the press, insisting mr. trump would not impose a federal abortion ban so he would veto a federal abortion ban. i think he would. he said that explicitly, that he would. no republican, at least no republican within any reasonable power, is saying that we should have a complete national abortion ban. top democrats pushing back on one of the party's top issues. american

women are not stupid, and we are not going to trust the futures of our daughters and granddaughters to two men who have openly bragged about blocking access to abortion for women all across this country. vice president harris vowed to restore reproductive rights in her convention speech thursday night. the campaign saying it has raised more than $40 million since then, adding to the half a billion since president biden dropped out five weeks ago. the trump campaign saying it raised almost $139 million in the month of july. in washington. alice barr, nbc news. developing right now oakland mayor sheng thao later today plans to hold her second in a series of public safety town halls. some residents may want to ask for questions to be answered. this is about the takeover of city streets by bikers and four wheelers. chaotic scenes unfolded over the weekend, in
5:07 am
some cases really terrorizing drivers. today in the bay's kris sanchez joins us with a look at the response from authorities as well. good morning. well good morning. so the biggest gathering happened at lake merritt in oakland. and when we say it was big, we are talking hundreds of people on motorcycles, dirt bikes. what looked to be motorized bikes, even atvs, those four wheelers that are supposed to be on the rough roads, not on grand avenue. that's where they took over at one point, the lawlessness escalated and some of them broke into a convenience store and took items also, the back window of that suv smashed out. police did not confirm that that was related. however, that was the only arrest that we saw. officers taking one man into custody. he was wearing a helmet, but many of the dozens of people who took to the bay bridge both saturday and sunday were not, and chp says that's a major concern. a major safety issue on sunday, bikers, bicyclists took over san francisco, at one point blocking a muni line in the castro. it is
5:08 am
not clear whether these are the same people, but regardless, the dangerous behavior is the same as we mentioned. oakland mayor sheng thao is holding a town hall meeting at 530 tonight. this is at saint john's episcopal church on golden street. if you'd like to attend at the very first meeting. this is the second of five. at the very first one, people were very frustrated and very clear with their mayor about what they want done, about rising crime in their neighborhood. marcus. very much so. kris thank you. well, it's the first of its kind. store opening today, designed to help struggling families make it in the bay. leaders, including house lawmaker nancy pelosi and san francisco mayor london breed, will help cut the ribbon on california's first free grocery store. so it's located at martin luther king junior middle school. this is in san francisco's bayview. it will help provide students and their families access to free and fresh produce, meat, dairy and canned goods. it's opening as part of a partnership involving
5:09 am
amazon and goodrx. goodrx is a nonprofit that operates similar stores in a handful of other states. today's ribbon cutting is happening at 1030 this morning. developing right now, parts of hawaii's big island are dealing with more than a foot of rain in the aftermath of hurricane joan. but the good news here is that the islands avoided a direct hit. the eye of the storm passed to the south of the big island yesterday, still managed to deliver some strong winds and dangerous surf. the storm also knocked out power for thousands. meteorologist kari hall is here and it's still clear. a little too close for comfort for a lot of folks. yeah so that storm has moved on, but now we're watching another one right behind that. as we were seeing our pacific hurricane season really starting to ramp up there. so now we have hurricane gilma. that is a category two hurricane. and right now it's making its westerly track at about nine miles per hour. so this is expected to become a tropical storm. and then an area of low pressure that will be just below
5:10 am
that tropical storm status going toward the end of the week. that may be a closer and more direct hit for some of those hawaiian islands as it passes right through. but we are also seeing all of these storms that are lining up out there as now, tropical storm joan continues to move off towards the west. it is moving a little bit more quickly, but still you can see some of the rain that's affecting us. areas like honolulu and areas off towards the east. so we're going to continue to watch those storms moving away from the hawaiian islands over the next few days. we're going to see our temperatures heating up here in the bay area. we're talking about 90s to start out our week for the inland east bay, as well as the south county, and then low 90s for much of the north bay. while near the coast and it's just the immediate coastline that still gets the relief from the high heat that we are going to see over the next couple of days. so we'll talk more about those temperatures coming up. mike has a look at where we can find some lower gas prices. trying to get
5:11 am
you started for a new week with a full tank here and the best price we can. we'll look at those prices. so starting on the board with the bay area's best. 375 at the club costco, one of your clubs there, south evergreen loop in san jose. that's the best on our board in the north bay moore marin county. the best price there is 3.89. posted by our old friend hq fuels in mill valley. that's the one on shoreline highway. and then lastly we'll talk about alameda county's best $3.99 with a new name to me. first time for double time on jackson street in hayward. i haven't seen that name before. it sounds like there's a number of them out there. gasbuddy.com will get you where you need to go, whether or not you recognize that name. on the roadways, we recognize these. we'll look at the issue in the south bay. we talked about a crash in san jose. it's the onramp to northbound 880 at the alameda. that's that's closed right now because of a crash. a car went off the roadway. no major injuries reported, but the onramp closed until they can clear it. you can enter at bascom. shouldn't be a problem for the area. and locals are showing light traffic on the

freeways. there's 101. back to you. thanks, mike. a south bay olympic gold medalist getting some praise ahead on today in the bay. the one person she's crediting for her love of soccer and a tech tycoon arrested over the weekend, leading to lots of questions. plus, clothes for sea lions. the indefinite shutdown of a beach as barricades go up because of this mammal takeover.

in dublin. and as you're heading out the door, it's going to be nice and cool. but look at the trend here. we're going from mid 60s at 8:00 to a noontime temperature of 85 degrees and hitting those highs in the low 90s today, much hotter than the weekend. and we'll talk about a hot week ahead coming up in the full microclimate forecast. yeah a pretty good amount of traffic here in palo alto just for a couple of seconds. literally a few seconds i saw a lot of headlights heading south. they may have cleared some construction going on, but the weekend work on the median doesn't appear to be having any delays, so should be good. we'll check the bigger view coming up. well, good morning. very happy monday to you. ibm is closing down a research facility in china as the u.s. government cracks down on what chips and what technology the chinese can access. crowdstrike reports its profits tomorrow. the first quarterly report since it caused

that huge nationwide computer shutdown. markets very close to all time records. after that speech, the head of the fed. powell gave at jackson hole at the end of last week. markets have been on a tear lately, but the best two weeks of all year happened in the past two weeks. traders are growing convinced the fed will lower rates next month. powell literally said the time has come to adjust policy, meaning lowering interest rates. fed chairs are rarely so straightforward. the fed raised rates to bring inflation under control, but now the worry is those high rates are hurting jobs. we're still gathering information about the arrest of telegram founder pavel durov in france. he's accused of allowing telegram to be used by drug dealers and terrorists, and worse, the company, in a release published on telegram called the accusations absurd. quote, it's absurd to claim that a platform or its owner are responsible for the abuse of that platform. almost a billion users globally

use telegram as a means of communication. telegram. if you've never used it, is a simple text message app. you can talk to your friends like any app, but you can also subscribe to channels like this one published by the ukrainian resistance. hundreds of thousands of people are subscribed to it. the french had a warrant for durov's arrest and arrested him after his private jet landed for a stop in paris, he created russia's version of facebook called v canett, but left russia to become a citizen of saint kitts. he's also a french and uae citizen. telegram used by 800 million users, including the russian military, according to u.s. intelligence, the arrest brings up enormous freedom of speech questions. it's generally accepted a platform like telegram or imessage. twitter can't be responsible for what people say. the thing we're still trying to figure out. durov must have known the french had an arrest

san jose native continues to celebrate her olympic gold medal. naomi girma is the first ethiopian american to play on the women's national soccer team, so she credits her father for fostering her love of soccer. she started a local club. he actually started that local club for bay area's ethiopian community in the early 2000s. girma went on to play for stanford. she is now playing professionally for san diego wave fc, the women's u.s. national team head coach calls her the best defender she's ever seen. the superstar admits that the praise is still very new to her. you always want to be your best. you always want to maximize your potential, but at the end of the day, you want to win. so i think that is was always the ultimate goal. and i think to have all these glowing praises always feels good. but i think, you know, having that without a win doesn't mean the same thing. girma is also now the first ever wave fc player to have her own bobblehead. that's
5:20 am
cool right there. that is cool. also trending for you. this morning. the continued takeover of one bay or beach here in monterey is really keeping it closed for everyone but a certain breed. that's right. you have to be a sea lion to hang out there. city leaders first closed san carlos beach indefinitely a week ago. people are being asked to stay at least 50ft from the crowd of sea lions there. the animals are federally protected. anyone caught feedin, trying to catch them, harassing the lions, or worse, can face some jail time. you know they come there, but they've just come in droves there that you've seen there. exactly. they're saying that it could be the ecosystem that they're feeding on. it's so good down there in monterey, not for just humans. and it looks beautiful. you know, pretty much everywhere you went in the bay area this weekend was really nice. it was nice over the weekend. and we're unfortunately going to see things change. we're going back
5:21 am
to summer here. but when you look at the calendar you're like, okay, well normally we do have these heat waves coming in every now and then and this may also impact our air quality. so as of now, as of today, things are looking pretty good. moderate air quality for the coast and the east bay. but our air quality may get worse as high pressure begins to build. so we're looking at temperatures right now in the upper 50s, low 60s, our typical start to the day. but this is a little bit warmer than normal with a high of 93. in morgan hill. we'll see a high of 93 in martinez and low 90s for much of the north bay. let's take it to tomorrow where we are going to see those temperatures coming up several more degrees. ukiah hitting 100 degrees 97 for concord, and we'll see a high of 97 in gilroy. even the peninsula is going to be pretty warm with upper 80s there and san francisco in the upper 70s taking it into wednesday. it's a repeat of more of the same temperatures really hot in the inland valleys and then mild
5:22 am
near the coast. so the cool air that's gone away. we're going to see high pressure building and hot temperatures. at least for the end of the week. and then beyond that, we may see a significant cool down for the weekend. so take a look at santa rosa 90 for the next couple of days. the weekend is looking pretty amazing as we go back to upper 70s and low 80s, so we are going to see things ramp up here for the next few days, but it will look nice just in time for the weekend. mike, you have a couple of notes for the east bay. yeah we're looking at a pretty calm drive right now. monday morning, but we'll focus over here. actually, we'll focus first right here coming toward the castro valley. y castro valley. there's a crash blocking one lane by a fire crew that's on scene at redwood road. we've already seen more volume coming in out of the altamont pass. this is early slowing. we'll track that out of dublin and into castro valley. meanwhile, coming up northbound 680, we still have the crew registered on the grid there from overnight road work, so watch it anywhere north of 84, but then north of bernal. you should be able to
5:23 am
access and continue on northbound 680 just fine. southbound is the commute direction. it's all right. back to you. thanks mike. 522 this morning, next here on today in the bay nbc bay area responds. it's possible for your air conditioner to deliver nice cool air without making you boiling mad about your high electric bill. i'm consumernvestigator chri is

possibly squeezing yourself into your home's crawl space. yes, that's me. the work might pay off in a big way. consider a big home with a big ac. while sealing everything up and lowering the bill 20% equates to roughly $50 a month every month, those savings are pretty cool. thank you. chris. well, next, here are the top stories we're following today, including the key vote one south bay city is set to make using of synthetic turf and the possible impacts this could have on youth sports. i'm ginger conejero saab in redwood city with a warning for bus riders along the peninsula. up ahead, we'll talk about a possible sickout that may impact your morning commute.

unusual look at the summer, unseasonal weather here and whether there are signs of more to come. this is today in the bay august snow. but it's going to be hot today. good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. let's head over to meteorologist kari hall right now because look, you're talking about snow in august and hot, hot temperatures. yeah. such a mixed bag of weather, but it's going back to something more typical of august. we are starting out with upper 50s and low 60s, and we are ahead right now, starting out nice and cool, but it will be warming up quickly. take a look at fremont as you're heading out for your way to work. it's going to be in the low 60s and then seeing those temperatures at 70 degrees at 9:00, and then 80 degrees at noon, and our high temperature there today will reach 85 degrees. definitely warmer than what we had over the weekend with san jose's high up to 88 degrees and 91 in novato. san francisco will be in the upper
5:32 am
70s, so we'll talk about more of this hot and the valley temperatures where we may see some triple digits. that's coming up in just a few minutes. laura marcus. all right. kerry. thank you. well, happening today a warning for bus riders on the peninsula. there's talk of a sickout as soon as this morning impacting samtrans service. this all follows the latest blow to contract talks today in the bay's ginger conejero saab is live for us in redwood city this morning. and ginger, what is the potential impact here? well, for those who use samtrans as their daily commute, this can really slow things down. or they can really feel it. but samtrans did say that they would prioritize those that were using the commute to schools. for those who are using it for bus service, as well as paratransit riders, they say those will not be affected. in case a sickout does happen. now we're at the redwood city transit center. still pretty quiet. it's still early on, but commuters have been advised by samtrans to be
5:33 am
ready to take alternative transportation today and possibly tomorrow. now the transit agency on friday said that the union, representing around 400 drivers and other workers, atu local 1574, rejected a three year contract proposal back on august 14th. this followed another rejection for the first proposed contract back in july. in a release statement, samtrans ceo april chan said in part, quote, our contract offer was fair, competitive and equitable for union members. we put this proposal forth in good faith and it was endorsed by union leadership team. now according to samtrans, a proposed contract included a 4% wage increase, followed by subsequent increases of around 3.5% for two years. this would have included bus operators, mechanics, utility workers and customer service representatives, but marcos lor, the big question is still, is this really going to happen? this morning we just spoke to a bus operator, the operator of that bus right there, who said that he was aware that there
5:34 am
were talks of a sickout, but he is not sure if it is still scheduled to happen today. we are trying to reach out to union leadership to see what they will say on this. we'll continue to monitor as the morning unfolds, but for now, i'll send it back to you guys. all right, ginger, thank you. i want to head over now to mike inouye because, mike, you know, you're tracking some of those alternative transit options for us. yeah. and unfortunately, there are not a lot of great transit options. i mean, samtrans does cover the city streets. san mateo county is talking. redwood city, belmont, san mateo over here. we'll show you here. this is a 82. is el camino, 84 is woodside. let's get you looking closer at this map. i've marked the thumbs up over there at the caltrain station. caltrain is one option. some folks might say on the peninsula, we can use bart. not at redwood city. bart only extends down to millbrae, so that is a factor. hopefully for those schools, those busses will be the priority as ginger said. however, hopefully also you have a backup plan. some of the parents might have scheduled some carpools. the south bay we
5:35 am
see san jose starting your typical build there. the only unusual slowing outside of what we're potentially delays for those samtrans riders are here into castro valley. it looks like the crash just cleared a couple of minutes ago. i think there's recovery west 580 approaching redwood road. i'll double check to make sure all lanes are cleared, because two were blocked for a period of time. back over to you. all right. thanks, mike. new overnight san francisco firefighters rescuing one person from an apartment fire. it happened along folsom street near the bay bridge. now, this is video from the scene posted by san francisco fire department. investigators do tell us that that fire was contained to one room due to a working sprinkler system. the cause is under investigation. well happening today, alameda county's fire chief organizing a media availability to address a video. now raising questions on social media. the department says it shows a firefighter in some sort of verbal altercation with a driver. a statement issued over the weekend says, quote, it has come to our attention that some language was
5:36 am
used during this interaction that does not align with the values and standards we uphold as an organization. to this point, the department is only saying the incident is being handled internally. well developing this morning, chp now investigating after chaotic scenes played out in parts of the bay area over the weekend. you can see right here a fleet of motorbikes and four wheelers. now most of this video was shot over in oakland's lake merritt, but authorities say that it extended to the bay bridge and san francisco. and in one case, police say that officers responded to a store being looted. now, witnesses also reported a car break in and at least one person was detained. our kris sanchez is following these developments. she'll have more for us in our next half. our neighbors in san francisco's outer sunset now rallying around a hardware store owner whose business went up in flames. it happened just about 24 hours ago at great wall hardware on taraval, near 28th avenue. firefighters say one person was hospitalized with injuries not considered life threatening. the
5:37 am
flames gutted the store, which had been in business since 1983. the owner is already vowing to reopen and residents are behind him. albert is a very active community member, so he's got a lot of love and support around him. albert's the head of our business association in the neighborhood, does a lot of things to build community around here, helps us support block parties, and it's really a sad situation. nothing structural. so if i can say anything to anybody, it's i think great wall hardware is going to be back at least two people living above the store are now said to be displaced. still not clear how that fire started. well, now to this story here, san jose police, they are investigating the death of a woman. witnesses say was run over by a car during an early morning dispute. now, neighbors heard that woman and a man arguing at 4:00 yesterday morning. this is outside of a home on north 33rd street near marburg way. this is in san jose. now, at one point, the
5:38 am
woman tried to get in the car, and witnesses say that she was still clinging on to the side of that car when it took off. the woman eventually fell and was run over. the truck is going very fast and when it came out, i see the one girl. she's on the road now. police arrived to find that woman unconscious in the road. she later died at the hospital. police are not yet confirming whether they've made any arrests, or if they have an idea of a possible suspect or suspects, but anyone with information is asked to contact police. well, happening tomorrow, a battle brewing in the south bay. coming up for a vote. santa clara county board of supervisors could vote to ban or restrict the use of artificial turf. earlier this year, it ordered a study of the turf's effects on county land. this surrounds concerns it could be more harmful to the environment than originally thought. earlier this month, business owners, soccer players and parents argued against a potential ban. environmental
5:39 am
groups in the santa clara medical association are among those supporting it. they say chemicals in the fake grass have been linked to cancer. now to a live look right now at palisades tahoe resort. ski resort that is. okay, so we're winter actually. briefly seemed to pop its head over the weekend and left a lot of people buzzing there. so here is how it looked there on saturday. that's when an unusual cold system delivered those flurries there to the higher elevations in the sierra resort called this the 1st august snowfall in 20 years. meteorologist kari hall is here right now. and kari, look, from what i saw right there and the temperatures were expected to get, probably don't need to bring out the big gear yet. no, not yet, but it is pretty chilly out there and we're going to have some warmer temperatures as we go into this afternoon. right now we're in the 30s, but we're headed for the mid 70s today, so whatever light dusting we had over the weekend will be long gone in the next few hours, and we're going to continue to heat

up as we go throughout the week. our high temperatures in the low 80s, and it's going to feel very much like summer. and as we take a look outside in san jose, we will have some hotter days ahead. after a nice little break over the weekend. and that unusually chilly system that moved in, we are going to see our temperatures quickly ramping up. and then for the valleys, we are going to see some mid to upper 90s in the forecast as high pressure returns. it may also impact our air quality as we get that air sinking and warming up. it also doesn't mix out a lot of the pollutants. so we're seeing temperatures today headed for that 90s and parts of the south bay, the east bay, as well as the north bay the peninsula will be in the mid to upper 80s and 77 today in san francisco. much warmer. we'll talk about what's ahead coming up in a few minutes. and mike, you're still tracking that crash in castro valley. i am kerry, it's still on the grid. but chp says one crew has been one cruiser has been released. and in the last two minutes we've seen the speeds greatly improved approaching crow canyon road.
5:41 am
and then there was another improvement right around redwood road, where the two lanes were reported blocked. i'm going to say things are clear now as the traffic has now made its way over to the castro valley y. and actually some are pushing down in toward hayward. no problem for that part of slowing and slowing into castro valley has cleared off the dublin grade. give us a chance to look ahead. now that that's kind of loosened up, we're looking at one event over at the oakland arena. sexy read. not me. that's another rapper over there at concert at 7 p.m. so no, there may be a crowd over there. it will not be the same crowd that for the a's game, it's probably a different crew there. we're looking over here toward the rest of the drive south bay. we have a little slowing for northbound 101. typical for san jose, but there's also that crash at the alameda on ramp to northbound 880, so use bascom instead. there's some reports of flooding that just popped up. that's really weird. it may be a busted water pipe. i'll let you know if it's anything big there. coming up, the rest of the bay is a smooth drive toward the bay bridge back to you. thanks, mike. never thought sexy red

them up and get them ready for the day. it will be a warmer one. so we're starting out with upper 60s, probably comfortable with short sleeves and then definitely for the afternoon. you don't want to lose that jacket today, so maybe not even bother. we're going to talk about hotter temperatures in our workweek forecast coming up in a few minutes. and looking at the bay bridge toll plaza approach, it looks like these folks are already well, awake. and actually, from time to time i see them slowing approaching that left side of the screen. that would mean that there's a backup building. no word on the metering lights, but it's about the regular time for them to turn on. so let's just assume they'll be on by the time you get there. even if you're leaving right now, people in the

facing a man found guilty of felonies. that's certainly how the harris camp is going to position it. trump on his truth social over the weekend, criticized abc. the host network, and said, why would i do the debate against kamala harris on that network? the harris camp, meantime, says the debate over debates is over, that their candidate will show up as agreed upon as scheduled next month. the debate donald trump harris campaign a few minutes ago said it was fine with leaving the microphones unmuted when it's not the candidate's turn to talk, saying they think the trump camp would prefer they be turned off to protect their candidate as they did over the weekend. they're campaigning again this week. trump was back in las vegas on friday, where he reminded voters he originally proposed making tips tax free only to have kamala harris say that's a good idea. adopt the same policy. a reminder before we hear from trump presidents don't decide who gets taxed, and neither candidate has explained the

to put a 20 to 40% tariff on goods imported into america would raise prices, though data showed last time. but it caused consumers to pay more. they paid more in taxes. $80 billion worth. do you acknowledge that consumers ultimately will pay more if there are more tariffs? so economists just acknowledge that. no, i don't christian because i think economists really disagree about the effects of terrorist tariffs, because there can be a dynamic effect. right. so what some economists will say is what you just said, that it will actually raise costs for consumers. but what other people say, and i think the record supports what this other view is, that it causes this dynamic effect where more jobs come into the country. now, when america puts a tariff on a foreign good, a german car, clothing made in china, pasta made in italy. it's the importer who pays the tariff, not the car maker or the pasta company. that money then goes into the federal treasury in the last trump presidency, it was about $80

billion. marcus. all right, scott, thank you. well, tomorrow is cut down day in the nfl. this is when those teams have to trim their roster to 53. and it comes as one top niners pick returns to the field 49ers head coach kyle shanahan says the first round draft pick ricky pearsall pearsall, will practice with the team today. now, he has been battling a partially dislocated shoulder joint after suffering a hamstring injury earlier in training camp. the coach calls it a common injury and he should be ready to go for week one. about 50% of the people coming out of college do that. that really wasn't the problem. he did it in otas for the first time with us, and when you do that, it's tender. and then he redid it here a couple weeks ago and it makes it tender. so you want to give him time to come back from it. it's probably happened to 80% of the guys on our team at some time, so it's pretty normal thing. the niners have exactly two weeks from today until they kick off the

see. all right, what about the forecast? you say things are going to get warm again today. yeah. we're back to summer and it's going to be hot, especially in the inland valleys for today. we're starting out nice and mild with upper 50s and low 60s. it's 63 as you're stepping out now in walnut creek. but then as we take a look at our high temperatures for today in the south bay, it will be 91 in los gatos. wasn't it nice over the weekend to not have to blast the ac? but we are back to having to turn on the air conditioning as concord will see a high of 96, about the same in walnut creek in hayward today, 85 degrees and mostly sunny upper 80s from redwood city to palo alto. 70, in daly city and some mid 70s for san francisco downtown in the north bay, 90 in sonoma and 93 in ukiah. so that area of low pressure that brought that cool air moving out of here now, high pressure is building and this is what's going to control our weather throughout much of the week and then start to ease up

for the weekend. so take a look at san jose. we are going from highs in the low to mid 90s to mid 80s. by thursday, and only 80 degrees for the weekend. so it does look like we do have some nicer weather ahead. and after a few days of that intense high pressure and some high heat, we will start to see things changing and going back to what's normal or even slightly cooler than normal for our temperatures for the weekend. but in san francisco we're going to see mid to upper 70s from now through wednesday, and then cooler for the rest of the forecast. mike, you're tracking potential delays for drivers in san jose. a couple of notes. northbound 101. we do expect the slowing here just north of two 8680 and heading up toward oakland road. a little more focused than we often see this monday, so we'll track that trend. there are no incidents reported. there is an incident reported here. the rest of the south bay maps are moving very smoothly, but getting on to northbound 880 from the alameda may be a factor. there was an earlier crash and they haven't
5:56 am
updated any clearing for the onramp. if that is the case or you want to just avoid it, use the bascom onramp to get to northbound 880, and that should be fine. we haven't heard of any problems and there's no delays that showed up on the sensor taking you out to discovery bay. folks who are not familiar, basically, everybody has a pier over here. lots of smaller roadways. but the major roadway is discovery bay boulevard, and there was an earlier crash continuing there for the closure at river lake boulevard. folks know you go one way on discovery bay boulevard, the other on willow lake, and that should take you around through the rest of the developments. the rest of the bay shows a pretty traditional drive, but there's a lot of slowing through. richmond for westbound 80. the rest of contra costa county pretty standard, including the backup at alameda county. getting off the bay bridge and getting out to the oakland side from the oakland side over to san francisco. advance too far, but there's the castro valley y. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. happening now. public safety and infrastructure projects are expected to get a boost in federal funding. fresh off of the dnc. u.s. congresswoman zoe lofgren will present those checks to support
