better way to start our monday with warmer weather. all right, here we go. i'm marcus washington, and i'm laura garcia. as long as it starts on monday with a lot of coffee for me. you think it's going to be an iced coffee by the end of the day? yes. it's going to heat up so fast. and we're going from a nice, mild morning to a really hot afternoon. and usually when those temperatures ramp up, we start to see an impact to our air quality. and so that's what we're expecting over the next couple of days. a little bit more haze and ozone. and we just want to do what we can to try to reduce what we're putting out there. our air quality outlook is still moderate for the coast and the bay. the east bay will be moderate. good elsewhere, but look at these high temperatures. so we're going from being able to enjoy more time outside to now maybe going inside for a little bit more and using that air conditioning as our temperatures today will hit 91
6:02 am
in santa rosa and napa. we'll reach a high of 96 in concord and 88 in san jose. tomorrow slightly hotter for those inland valleys, and we may see a couple of triple digits on the map with a lot of mid to upper 90s from the south county to the inland east bay, as well as the north bay. so i'll be tracking all of these changes for you. more coming up in a few minutes. and mike, you have a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. i do, because the backup is now visible as folks were slowing toward that left side of the screen that indicated them slowing toward the toll plaza because of the backup from the metering lights to that point. so we see the continued build, but has improvement now, which is what this is intended to do on the span itself. still slow through richmond, but that first burst just seemed to have a lot more traffic volume than it typically does. but now things are smoother. heading through richmond out of el cerrito and down toward the berkeley curve. mild slowing starts there. highway four watch around railroad as you're coming out of antioch. there may be additional slowing for another crash, and we're looking at the rest of the bay. there's just that closure

that the preemptive strike destroyed thousands of hezbollah rockets. there are no reports of any casualties in israel as a result of that exchange. meanwhile, a u.s. official tells nbc news that ceasefire talks in gaza are continuing so far. the source says that the negotiations have been constructive. hamas says that it will not accept new conditions from the proposal made in july, and that any new deal must include a permanent ceasefire. this morning, both presidential candidates are ramping up their campaigns. with just ten weeks to go until the election. former president trump will hit several battleground states this week, and fresh off of the dnc. vice president harris and governor tim walz also expected to make campaign stops today in the bay's alice barr joins us live from washington and alice, this is all really coming ahead of a highly anticipated presidential debate next month. it will be the first between former president trump and vice president harris. we all saw how

6:08 am
when we say it was big, it was really big. hundreds of people on motorcycles, dirt bikes, regular bikes, even atvs, those four wheelers that are obviously meant for off roading, not for being on grand avenue. at one point, the lawlessness escalated and some of those folks broke into a convenience store, took items. there was also a vehicle with a smashed out back window, and this is the only arrest that police will confirm. we saw officers taking one man into custody. he was wearing a helme, but many of the dozens of people who took to the bay bridge both saturday and sunday were not. and the chp says that's obviously a major safety concer. on sunday, bikers and bicyclists took to san francisco, at one point blocking a muni line in the castro. it is not clear whether these are all the same people, but it is the same dangerous behavior. now, as we mentioned, oakland mayor sheng thao is holding a town hall meeting at 530 tonight at saint john's episcopal church on golden street, now at the very

tropical storm john right now that's moving to the west at 14mph, still producing some rain for some of the islands, including oahu. but we're also going to see this moving off towards the west over the next several days as it continues to weaken. but then right behind that, there is another system that is now a category two hurricane. gilma that will be moving in, and it is expected to weaken over the next few days, but may make a more direct hit as it becomes an area of low pressure as it weakens over the next few days, but still producing some high winds and rain. so we'll be watching that throughout the rest of the week. now let's head over to mike with an update on our gas prices. get you started this week in case you need to fill up from an active weekend. remember next weekend's labor day weekend? we may see those prices come up, but right now, best on the board for the bay is 3.75 at the club, meaning costco. the cost club there. south evergreen loop is the location for san jose, where you get 3.75 in the north marin

we won't be saying about that forecast today. no, at least in most places. not in the next few days. it's going to be hot in the valleys once again. at least we did have a break this weekend from the high summer heat, and now we're seeing that fog peeling away from the golden gate bridge and it is a mostly clear start, but beautiful nonetheless. as we're getting started on this monday morning. right now, temperatures are in the upper 50s and low 60s, 61 in san rafael, and it's also 61 in san jose. a lot of seconds for much of the east bay. so it's about time to get the kids up, get them ready for school. we're starting out in martinez at 60 degrees. we're headed for the upper seconds at pickup time. such a difference from the way the first bell rings and the weather that we're seeing. and then what we will see for the last of the school bells for the afternoon. so here's a look at our afternoon highs. 91 in los gatos and 96 in gilroy. and we'll be in the mid to upper 90s for the east bay. walnut creek, 96 degrees, 85 for fremont and

hayward, and 76 in san mateo. half moon bay still looks pretty good with upper 60s there. san francisco in the 70s today in the mission district, 74 degrees and much of the north bay in the upper 80s and low 90s. so this is the change that we're going to see, and it continues over the next few days. now that that very unusual august low in that storm system has moved on. high pressure will build and that will be the influence on our weather that we'll see throughout much of the workweek. but it looks like in time for the weekend, we'll go back to some more comfortable weather. after a few days of some hot temperatures. take a look at santa rosa going from low 90s to upper 80s on wednesday, and then upper 70s on saturday. can you tell i'm excited about the cooler weather? we will see that after at least 3 or 4 days of highs in the 90s in the inland valleys, san francisco will see those highs in the mid 70s and then down into the mid 60s. so mike, the toll plaza looking more like itself. yeah, it was

just like laura said monday. i think some folks just say i had to hit that snooze one more time. we're back to the full approach toward the toll plaza, and there were no crashes reported on the approach. there's that slowing through richmond and some slowing as there is a crew now off of the san rafael side. that's eastbound 580 onto the bridge itself. a smooth build here to hayward. nothing dramatic. tri-valley just fine through the area and out of vasco road and easy drive out of contra costa county. back to you. thanks mike. 622 for you this morning and we are counting down the days to the pairs paralympics plus a south bay olympic gold medalist getting some praise for one person. she is crediting for her love of soccer and you can help us clear the shelters. take a look at care bear, an eight week old mixed breed available for adoption at the animal community center in milpitas. to find a full list of pets up for adoption, grab your phone. point it at that qr code on your screen. it'll take you straight to our website so you can learn

6:32 am
thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. time to get a look at what's happening with that forecast today. here's a look right here in san francisco. meteorologist kari hall has the entire bay area covered for us this morning. kari, how's it looking out there? yeah, such a beautiful sunrise. and we are able to also see the sun coming up in san jose. you'll notice it will be warming up much more quickly than we've had over the weekend. with hotter days ahead. now the valleys are going to see those high temperatures in the mid to upper 90s. high pressure returning. and that also may affect our air quality. take a look at this live view in dublin this morning as we're waking up and heading out. that's a little bit of a distraction there with that beautiful sunrise. but we are also going to see more sunshine today. temperatures going from 70 at 9:00 to 90 at 3:00, and we will have hotter temperatures as well. it's not just today, but the next several days as our high pressure once again ramps up. so we'll talk more about this and what's ahead
6:33 am
for the rest of the week. coming up in the full microclimate forecast. sounds good. we'll check back with you. well, right now at 630, we're following some breaking news out of oakland where a gunman targeted an suv which eventually crashed outside of a kfc on 73rd and international boulevard in east oakland. it happened a little under two hours ago. at this point, we know the driver is in the hospital, but we don't yet know the extent of injuries or the exact location where the shooting itself took place. police do tell our photographer on the scene a passenger in the suv was not injured, but that passenger is now being questioned. well, happening today, a warning for bus riders on the peninsula. that's where talks of a sick out as soon as this morning impacting samtrans service. it follows the latest blow to contract talks today in the bay's ginger conejero. saab joins us live in millbrae this morning. so ginger, let's talk about the potential impact for folks. yeah. good morning laura and marcus. now commuters take
6:34 am
you know samtrans to get to school to get to work. also paratransit riders also take the bus and so that can this can be potentially impactful to any sort of morning commute. but the transit agency says that they will prioritize bus service to schools and that paratransit will not be impacted if this does push through today. we're here in millbrae. it's, you know, still relatively quiet, not as busy as it will probably get. so later on in the morning. but we are hearing that riders have been warned to have potential alternate routes or alternate ways to get to where they need to go. this morning and tomorrow. now, the transit agency on friday said that the union, representing around 400 drivers and other workers, atu local 1574, rejected a three year contract proposal back on august 14th. this followed another rejection for the first proposed contract back in july.
6:35 am
in a release statement, samtrans ceo april chan said in part, quote, our contract offer was fair, competitive and equitable for union members. we put this proposal forth in good faith and it was endorsed by the union leadership team. now, according to samtrans, the proposed contract included a 4% wage increase, followed by subsequent increases of around 3.5% for two years. this would have included bus operators, mechanics, utility workers and customer service representatives. now we have talked to a couple bus operators this morning. we have seen several samtrans busses pull through. they say that they are not aware that this sickout is happening today. we have yet to hear confirmation from the union, but we are working on that and will continue to monitor this story as as the morning develops or the story as the morning unfolds, i should say. but for now, we're in millbrae, ginger conejero saab today in the bay. all right, ginger, thank you. so now let's
6:36 am
check in with mike. he's got a look at what alternatives may be out there for folks. yeah. not great alternatives guys. as ginger showed in her live shot right behind her. she's at the millbrae transit center, which is key. millbrae is up here, though. you saw caltrain behind her. that did arrive at the station at samtrans. busses were running, but there may be those delays. notice on the map millbrae is at the top down there in san mateo, san mateo to redwood city. that's the area for samtrans. so if you can't get to millbrae, you have an issue. you can't you can't get to the caltrain tracks. they are pretty much parallel with el camino. so it is a note that can take you if you have a longer route. now, the rest of your commute seems to be moving smoothly outside of sam trans and even sam trans wasn't reporting any major delays. that's good news for now. we're looking at the traffic driving through the east bay. there's a crash looking like it's coming down into berkeley, out of richmond. there's no major slowing, but it does show a different pattern there. and the build through walnut creek actually is through pleasant hill, circling there for 242.
6:37 am
back to you. thank you. mike. well, another impact to the commute is the twin peaks tunnel in san francisco, still closed this morning. it's impacting muni's light rail service. the west portal and forest hill muni stations are also closed. muni says the bus bridge will link light rail riders between those stations and castro or church street stations. the tunnel is set to reopen on friday. san jose police are investigating the death of a woman witnesses say was run over by a car during an early morning dispute. now, neighbors heard that woman and a man arguing around 4:00 yesterday morning. this is outside of a home on north 33rd. this is near marburg way in san jose. now, at one point, that woman tried to get in the car, according to witnesses. and they also say that she was still clinging to that car. the side of it when it took off. well, that woman eventually fell and was run over. the truck is going very fast. and when it came out, i see the one girl she's on the road. police arrived to find
6:38 am
that woman unconscious in the road. she later died at the hospital. police are not yet confirming whether they've made an arrest or if they have an idea about any possible suspects, but anyone with information is asked to contact police. alameda county's fire chief is expected to answer questions later this morning about a controversial video showing a firefighter making racially insensitive comments in a heated exchange. and we need to warn you, some of the language is offensive. jagger was on and you were going 60 miles an hour in the fast lane. i don't think so. and then you sped up when i tried to get around you. i don't think so. so we can play. i have a camera, dude. so good for you. yeah i do. good for you. that's. that's good. yeah. the cops are coming. it's okay. oh, the cops are definitely coming. oh, yeah. they're mexican. oh, no. oh, filipino. the driver who recorded the video tells our sacramento affiliate. the comments came following a crash friday on highway 99 in lodi. it started as an argument over who was at fault. eventually, the driver accused the firefighter of being racist, which the
6:39 am
firefighter denied in part with four letter words. the driver has this to say about the moments leading up to that exchange. you know, i wasn't i wasn't slowing down. i wasn't speeding up. i was speeding up because he was behind me. so i can let him pass. slow down. be patient. because i really i saw him coming from a mile away and i knew that if i don't speed up, he will come and hit me. alameda fire has not shared the firefighter's identity or employment status, but the fire chief did issue a statement. it says in part, quote, our department is committed to gathering all the facts and we are addressing this situation in a manner that reflects our dedication to integrity, professionalism and community trust. developing this morning, chp now investigating after a chaotic scene playing out in parts of the bay area over the weekend. as you can see right here, a fleet of all types of

motor bikes four wheelers there. most of this video was shot near oakland's lake merritt, but authorities do say that it extended to the bay bridge as well as into san francisco and no one case. police say officers responded to a store being looted. witnesses also reported that a car was broken into and at least one person was detained. as a busy labor day weekend approaches, bay area airports are warning travelers to arrive early. however, it's the roads that are expected to see the most traffic. triple a says travelers should avoid the afternoon and early evening hours on thursday, and friday. those times will be the most congested. saturday morning's best time to travel by car. travelers returning on sunday and on labor day should leave as early as possible to avoid heavy traffic in the afternoon. well, now we want to take a look at palisades tahoe ski resort. this is where winter actually briefly seemed to pop its head in over the weekend. left a lot of

people buzzing there, so i want to show you what it looked like there on saturday. that's when we saw that. unusually cold system deliver those flurries to the higher elevations of the sierra. the resort called this the 1st august snowfall in 20 years. not enough to really stick, though, or, you know, get the skis out just yet. not just yet, but i mean, that was pretty amazing to see. and then this is also amazing. it's going to be in the 70s and 80s over the next few days. so such a big turnaround, but a beautiful view this morning. you can see the fog settling in at palisades tahoe and the temperature headed for the mid 70s for today 80 tomorrow. and then also low 80s. so we are going to have more of a summer feel over the next few days. and that cold storm system now moving off towards the east, away from us. and now high pressure is building that's going to give us some hotter temperatures for today. low 90s for much of the north bay. livermore today, 9296 in gilroy and for palo alto will be in the

upper 80s. so we'll talk about the summer heat in just a few minutes. and, mike, now you're seeing a crash on the east shore freeway. yeah. the reason there was slowing and we talked about the crash. it was kohler commute. it's eastbound 80 getting away from the bay bridge and over toward golden gate fields. two lanes were reported blocked, but the speed sensors have just changed from red to orange. so i think that they've cleared at least one of those lanes, perhaps both, as we're looking again away from the bay bridge, coming to the bay bridge and around the area out of contra costa county. pretty standard. 242 does show persistent slowing. and now there's more slowing, more traffic toward the walnut creek interchange. getting a little look ahead. we're talking about a concert over at the arena, sexy red. that's also my name in the newsroom. for those who didn't know, i'm just looking at a smooth flow of traffic. the south bay? no red, mostly green. now some orange. back to you, sexy red. mike. that kind of has a ring to it, if that's what you want us to call you know, more careful what you wish for. all right. burning man kicking off its annual festival with an unexpected, tragic turn. up

next, we're learning about the death of a woman there on the very first day and the conditions that now have some people worried about a repeat of last year's muddy mess in politics. a debate over the debates, as it looks as if trump is hinting he may not show up. plus, it's national dog day. yeah, see how we are celebrating our four-legged friends. keep it right here in 16 years, greg gerstner will land the perfect cannonball.

apartment fire. this happened along folsom street near the bay bridge. this is video of the scene posted by san francisco fire department. investigators do tell us that that fire was contained to one room due to the working sprinkler system. the cause is under investigation. two decision 2024 with just weeks until the presidential debate, donald trump is hinting he may not show up and scott mcgrew he will be facing down a vastly different opponent compared to last time, you know, and debates is how we got to where we are now, right? i mean, trump and joe biden back in june, their debate forever changing that race. the debate, the future one scheduled for september 10th, could change it again. you'll have an experienced prosecutor facing a man found guilty of felonies. that's certainly how the harris camp is going to position it. trump on his truth social over the weekend criticized abc, the
6:47 am
host network, and said, quote, why would i do the debate against kamala harris on that network? the harris camp, meantime, says the debate over debates is over, and that their candidate will show up as agreed as scheduled next month to debate donald trump. the harris campaign said earlier this morning it was fine with leaving the microphones unmuted when it's not the candidate's turn to talk, saying they think the trump camp would prefer they be turned off to protect their candidate from saying something. trump was back in las vegas on friday, where he reminded voters he originally proposed making tips tax free, only to have kamala harris say you know, that's a good idea and adopt the same policy. a reminder before we hear from trump, presidents don't decide who gets taxed, and neither candidate has explained their policy in any detail. she should just she's a copycat. she's a she's a flip flopper. you know what a flip. she's the

greatest flip flopper in history. she went from she went from communism to capitalism in about two weeks. now trump has picked up a key word from harris, joined the harris campaign. democrats, voters have all used that word to describe last week's democratic national convention and the campaign ahead. and trump has been adding the word joy to his speeches. moments ago, trump helped post a wreath at arlington national cemetery calling attention to the third anniversary of the withdrawal from afghanistan, a withdrawal he helped negotiate during his term, but took place under president biden. 13 americans were killed as the u.s. removed its troops in august of 2020. one. republican candidate for vice president jd vance was on meet the press over the weekend, where he said he regretted women took his criticism of them as childless cat ladies the wrong way. those

are his words, and denied trump's plan to put a 20 to 40% tariff on goods imported into america would raise prices, though data shows that's exactly what happened last time. but it caused consumers to pay more. they paid more in taxes. $80 billion worth. do you acknowledge that consumers ultimately will pay more if there are more tariffs. so economists just acknowledge that. no i don't christian because i think economists really disagree about the effects of terrorist tariffs because there can be a dynamic effect. right. so what some economists will say is what you just said, that it will actually raise costs for consumers. but what other people say, and i think the record supports what this other view is, that it causes this dynamic effect where more jobs come into the country. now, when america puts a tariff on foreign goods, a german car or clothing made in china, or pasta made in italy, it is the importer who pays the tariff, not the car maker or the pasta company. that money then goes into the federal treasury. in

the last trump presidency, there was about $80 billion. thank you scott, it is 649 right now as the annual burning man festival kicks into high gear, we've learned it's already turned deadly. authorities say a woman died yesterday. the same day the annual event kicks off. no word on the cause of her death, but pershing county deputies are set to be investigating. the festival itself got a wet start on saturday after rain delayed. some people heading to the black rock desert. the gates were temporarily closed but later reopened. it's now reportedly taking so-called burners about an hour to reach the gate from the main road. the festival will wrap up this weekend. hopefully it's not a muddy mess like it was last year. yeah, well, if you didn't know, today is national dog day and laura has a new member of her family. that's right. it's always dog days in our house. and that's a good thing, though. this is peanut, my new little puppy. and who knew? just 5 pounds of love like that could wreak so much havoc in our lives? no. he's fun, he's
6:51 am
playful and, you know, but it makes you say, wow, why did i get a puppy again? it's cute. we love them, and we adore him. and he's best friends with our little pip, who's a rescue we got right here in san jose at the animal shelter. and that reminds us, if you are looking to give an animal in need a forever home, our clear the shelters annual event is still underway. there's an event at berkeley humane. saturday, september seventh. that's always the big one. you can log on to nbcbayarea.com. slash clear the shelters to look up a shelter for you. or you could pick up another one. or who knows? as if our family isn't lively enough, right? like, sure. let's add a puppy to the mix. a lot of joy though. i love, i love, love animals. love dogs. cute little one too. all right, well, taking the dog for a walk today. yeah. little peanuts. cute. all right.

yeah. we're going to have some great weather for you early in the day. later on this afternoon. you have to watch out for those little paws on the hot pavement. be careful with that. now we're going to start out with sunshine. we can see the sun now rising over san jose, and we often watch our air quality when our temperatures start to heat up. and with this weather setup, we are going to see a little bit of a hazy sky in parts of the coast and the bay, as well as the east bay. it's still good for much of the rest of the bay area but we'll have to monitor it going into the next couple of days. and martinez, time to get the kids up and get them out the door for school. a drop off time will be at 60 degrees here. we're headed for the upper seconds, so you can see that range and temperatures where they're wearing a jacket in the morning and shorts in the afternoon. so just be mindful of the changes in the range and temperatures. we'll see today really heating up in the north bay with highs in the low to mid 90s. 96 in concord. while san jose will be in the upper 80s into the day
6:53 am
tomorrow. basically a repeat of today that may be slightly hotter in some spots, like livermore, where we'll see a high of 95 degrees 82 in oakland and upper 70s in san francisco. only the immediate coastline won't see much of a change in our temperatures over the next few days. but it will be hot as that cool weather we had over the weekend continues to move away. this high pressure is building and gives us some pretty hot heat or high heat over the next few days, but then it will start to ease up in time for our weekend. look at san jose going from the start of the week in the 90s to only reaching a high for the low 80s this weekend. looking forward to the cooler weather, but we are going to have to make it through these next 3 or 4 days with highs in the 90s. mike, you are looking at some alternate routes through cocoa county making a choice here. most of the bay is looking pretty standard here. contra costa county. notice the difference. kirker pass is starting to build though. i just saw them add a couple of minutes onto this route. the reason is because there's a crash between a railroad and bailey, so some
