country. from raging floods and violent hurricanes, the soaring temps sizzling america's heartland. this summer of severe weather is not letting up. in the midwest a brutal heat dome fueled by high pressure. chicago's record high of 97 degrees could be broken. at an air force show in kansas, dozens were treated. 17 had to be hospitalized for heat-related issues. >> the biggest thing we see is dehydration and heat exhaustion. >> reporter: and in alaska, deadly landslide causing the downing of power lines and forcing residents from their homes also a concern. at least one person was killed and several others injured. all of it comes as the violent hurricane season rages on.

over the weekend, hawaii was slammed by hurricane hone with heavy rains and 70 mile-per-hour winds grounding flights for days. and in the final stretch of summer vacation, violent flash flood reeking havoc at grand -- wreaking havoc at the iconic grand canyon national park. washing away camp sites and parts of the canyon wall. more than 100 hikers and tourists trapped by raging flood waters had to be evacuated, some even airlifted from the canyon. a 33-year-old woman died. others caught off guard by how quickly it happened. >> i'm lucky to be alive. >> reporter: back in the midwest schools in milwaukee and chicago among other cities are closed utah to the excessive heat, which is expected to last for days. craig? >> maggie vespa there in

illinois. thank you. >> let's bring in dylan dreyer now. >> good morning. we have the heat effect through the midwest. back through the plains states, the heat index will be up around 115 degrees. 45 million people at risk for heat advisories or heat warnings. states running above average. omaha 17 degrees today. wichita 99. chicago 96. detroit 91. this heat is going to stick around through the great lakes region and into the midwest tomorrow, too. st. louis 100 degrees tomorrow. cincinnati, 97, erie, pennsylvania, 88 degrees, that's 13 degrees above average. we also have the chance of stronger storms. this does include minneapolis. we could see large hail, damaging winds. can't rule out tornadoes. tomorrow the threat pushes into wisconsin, into michigan. this does include chicago. across norton illinois. detroit will see these stronger storms, too. the other thing we're watching

is this tropical storm just south of honolulu right now. the big island picked up 15 inches of rain. now, the storm is moving to the west at 14 miles an hour. that is good news as it pulls away. so we will see lesser impacts in hawaii throughout the day, craig. >> we'll come back in a few moments. meanwhile, tensions remain high across the middle east after a week into violence -- a weekend of violence there. israel and hezbollah launching major attacks on each other. matt bradley is in israel with more. >> reporter: good morning, craig. i'm here in israel at a private home. even though most of those rockets were intercepted, they can still cause a lot of damage and a lot of danger. today the middle east still bracing for war. a day after israel launched what

it called a preemptive strike and hezbollah launched a volley of missiles and drones at military installations across israel. at least for now that crisis appears to be averted. both hezbollah and israel claimed victory, while authorities reported no civilian casualties and minimal damage. >> it didn't necessarily strike particularly hard. do you think this was a face-saving climb-down by hezbollah? >> part of this attack looking not as big was our self-defense attack in the morning before their attack. >> reporter: israel's prime minister warns whoever harms us, we harm him. he warned yesterday's attacks are not the end of the story. defense lloyd austin ordered two carrier strike groups to remain in the middle east. tensions have been mounting since last month when israel assassinated a senior hezbollah commander, sparking fears of war that could even drag in the united states.

>> our hope is that the events of last night do not spill out into an escalation that leads to war. >> reporter: it comes as sirens sounded in tel aviv after hamas targeted the city with a rocket, which didn't result in any deaths or serious injuries. the middle east is breathing a sigh of relief, but the lasting peace will depend on peace talks that have so far seen little success. >> we are feverishly working as we speak with the other team to get to a cease-fire and hostage deal. >> reporter: craig, a u.s. official told nbc news yesterday that the talks have been constructive and they will continue. craig? >> some good news there. matt bradley, thank you. breaking overnight, russia unleashed a massive drone and missile attack throughout ukraine, targeting energy infrastructure. at least three people were reported killed and there are reports of power outages throughout the country.

the barrage started around midnight and continued into the daylight hours, in what appears to be russia's biggest attack on ukraine in years. -- in weeks. the orksz -- offensive conditions in the kursk region. meanwhile, back here, it is the start of another busy and big week in the race for the white house. both conventions now over, the debates now looming. the campaigns are gearing up to hit the trail in crucial swing states. nbc's gabe gutierrez joins us with the very latest. >> reporter: good morning. this morning vice president harris is expected to do her first formal interview since president biden dropped out of the race. there is now a debate over the debates. both campaigns arguing that the other is trying to change the rules. this morning with 71 days until the election the presidential campaign is ramping up. early voting starts next month in six states and the harris campaign is announcing a bus tour this week to battleground georgia.

while the trump campaign fresh off an endorsement by third-party candidate rfk. >> i was surprised to discover that we are aligned on many key issues. >> reporter: he's planning to head to michigan, wisconsin and pennsylvania. >> we're going to defeat comrade kamala harris, and we're going to win back our beautiful white house. >> reporter: harris' campaign and its allies say they raised a record $540 million since president biden dropped out a month ago. now with the democratic national convention behind her, there is mounting pressure on vice president harris to hold a formal press conference or a major sitdown interview. while on "meet the press," trump's vp pick senator j.d. vance telling kristin welker his running mate would not veto a total ban on abortion.

rare virus was discovered. it was detected for first time in several years. this morning communities across massachusetts are on high alert after state health officials found eastern equine encephalitis. the first case in four years. the 80-year-old man in worcester county. >> it makes me think about. i would wear long pants and long sleeves. >> reporter: triple 'e -- triple e is a rare but serious virus that can cause severe swelling of the brain. fever, headache, vomiting and behavior changes. according to the cdc, an estimated 30% of those affected will die and survivors are permanently disabled, suffering from long-term neurological problems. >> we're at a critical time of the year for mosquito-borne illnesses, including eee. >> reporter: authorities are so concerned they have announced plans to spray pesticides from

airplanes and trucks across more than a dozen high-risk communities. several towns have announced park closures or voluntary cu curfews, recommending residents limit activities outdoors from dusk until dawn when mosquitos are more active. it risks disrupting youth sports just as the school year is getting underway. >> this basically shuts our season down from day one. >> reporter: it comes a west nile virus continues its menacing march across much of the u.s. with 33 states reporting cases this year, including dr. anthony fauci, who was recently hospitalized and recovering at home, expected to make a full recovery. >> i think if you are in a warm part of the country, which is everywhere right now, you should be concerned enough that you should take precautions to protect yourself. >> while there are no vaccines or treatments for either eee or west nile, there are important steps you can take to protect yourself.

good morning. there is a lot happening in the space world. we have a launch expected less than 24 hours from now set to be extremely historic. we talk about not only the space suits they're wearing but the all-civilian space walk scheduled less than 24 hours from now. this on the heels of this dramatic announcement that the two astronauts will be hitching a ride with boeing's top competitor. a week-long issue in space is a week long journey. -- eight-month journey for butch wilmore and suni williams. >> nasa decided that butch and suni will return with crew nine next february. >> reporter: the pair stranded aboard the international space station after their boeing star liner faced technical issues including helium leaks, which are vital for re-entry. "starliner" will now return without them, and nasa is

tapping spacex to leave them two c seats on their previously scheduled mission after a series of tests on space and in earth. nasa deciding a crew trip back was too risky, citing the uncertainty what the thrusters would do when the ship would undock. >> the decision to keep them aboard the international space station and bring the boeing "starliner" home uncrewed is the result of a commitment to safety. >> reporter: boeing citing we continue to focus on the safety of the crew and spacecraft. last month tom costello asking them about the boeing "starliner" spacecraft, including past issues of being over budget and behind schedule. >> are you confident in the performance of the ship for future missions as well? >> this is a tough business that we're in. human space flight is not easy in any regime. and there have been multiple issues with every spacecraft that's ever been designed.

that's what we do. the mantra, failure is not an option, that's why we are staying here now. >> reporter: meanwhile, spacex is on the eve of making history with the polaris dawn team. >> welcome to our simulator. >> reporter: together, the crew will travel the highest humans have gone since the last moon mission over 50 years ago. >> are you guys excited to get out here? >> reporter: we sat down with the crew in may. >> you will be outside of the spacecraft walking around for a couple of hours. >> the background is training the astronauts across all of our dragon missions. now i have an opportunity with this crew to go and test out a brand-new space suit. really expand the capabilities of dragon. >> reporter: now back to "starliner". butch's wife reacted to the news telling the "associated press"

that she, her daughters, their family are praying for a safe return for both butch and suni on whatever spacecraft that will be. we always get questions, when it comes to "starliner," how butch and suni are doing when it comes to clothes, food and water. they do have clothes, food and water shipped up through missions. they're doing just fine on all the supplies, but no guarantee on the netflix connection. >> at least they have the supplies. joined now by a former nasa astronaut with more than 600 hours in space, 30 hours in space walks alone. mike, good to have you here. we knew that this was a possibility. but, i mean, you're planning for ten days. now they will come back in february. what say you, good decision or no? >> given the situation and what they had learned and what happened in the spacecraft during testing, this is the right decision. it was about safety. and they weighed a lot of

different aspects of this, but safety won out. they will stay up there a little bit longer. "starliner" will come back. i think it will fly again. they will check it out and do more testing. but this was absolutely the right decision. >> you have flown two missions. you know the ins and outs of this. what do you think they're feeling now that the decision has been made? i mean, we've been talking about this, speculating, but now they know. >> yeah. in that way it is a relief because now they know what the new plan is. at first they said eight to ten days. then they said, when are we going to get back. they're doing more testing. now they know and their families can adjust to not having them around for the holidays. i think it is a bit disappointing because they will miss their families, because they're not coming back in the spaceship they wanted to do. but i think they understand this is the right decision and the safety factor won out here. >> i can't stop thinking about

the mental challenge of thinking you are going out for one time and going for this extended period. tell us why the astronauts are so well equipped with this. sonny is someone you would want to be stuck in space with. >> both of them are great people. they joined nasa, well, they were selected a couple years after i was, so i got to work with them for many years. they're both well-qualified. they picked the right pick for this mission. they've flown multiple times. suni has spent a lot of time at the space station, so has butch. so they're doing their activities the last couple months. they will continue to do this with the new crew once they get joined by them. but it is more their attitude. the resiliency. like all of us, right? you have challenges. you have to be resilient. you have to be flexible. and that really describes them. they're really dedicated to their jobs. so they were chosen for this mission for a reason and now we're seeing part of the reason why. >> role models, aren't they? >> i said it earlier. but now we know for sure.

final preseason game. that's a scary one. >> for real. absolutely, guys. you could say the biggest win for the chargers this weekend wasn't on the football field, but rather how they handled this tense experience. jim harbaugh is praising the response of dallas firefighters who rescued the team, the poise of his players and he's commending quarterback justin herbert who he says played a key role in the operation. this was the scene inside a hot, packed, broken down elevator friday night. chargers star quarterback justin herbert among the 15 people trapped, along with more than a dozen other players and staff members. officials say the group was stuck for nearly two hours at their hotel in downtown dallas. firefighters had to pull each of them out one by one through a narrow ceiling panel to escape. video obtained captures the

potentially dangerous rescue. crews using flashlights to guide everyone through the dark elevator shaft and into an adjacent elevator. luckily, no injuries reported. on saturday chargers coach jim harbaugh addressing the tense moments. >> given the situation, it is a test of wills. there's a camaraderie among that group that's even stronger than it was before. >> reporter: harbaugh specifically praising his quarterback's leadership, saying he was the last person out of the elevator, making sure all 14 others made it to safety. >> he was a rock. he kept everybody calm. >> reporter: this comes one month after jennifer garner found herself in a similar situation. >> we're stuck on this elevator. >> reporter: while at comic-con in san diego, the actress bringing comedic relief. ♪ until one hour and 12 minutes later, the doors were pried own. the friday night fiasco didn't

they're not proactive. they wait for there to be a problem. so they're like, i didn't do any training and all of a sudden things are happening. >> yeah, that's us. you are talking to my wife. >> i'm not trying to call you out, but that's what happens. >> let's get into these tips. number one, you have folks coming over. friends, sometimes strangers as well, and you just don't want your dog to jump up on them. what do you do? >> well, it is important to have an off command. so you have to have obedience. you can't just say, hey, dog, don't be a dog. ups is there. amazon is there. your friends is there. make sure you have a good send-away. tell them to go to their bed. boom, stay. >> talk to me about recall, dogs off the leash. >> who doesn't want their dog off the leash? it makes the dog the happiest they could ever be. good, call your dog to you. that's important. telling your dog to get back to you.

you have to teach them in the beginning, though. don't wait for them to be going around the block. >> how long can you keep a dog's attention span? >> i say 10, 15 minutes. kind of like hip training. make sure they don't get bored and tired. but do it throughout the day. >> this is another one we struggle with, stay. how do you get your pup to stay wherever he or she is. >> stay. they tell the dog to come to them. but what you want to do is stay the dog in good position, good stay. good stay. so you are paying the dog in good position. you are not recalling the dog when you're doing stay. >> so basically you don't want to confuse the dog. >> right. because they will do this. pay the dog in position, break, and then break the dog. >> you use a lot of treats as well, that positive reenforcement. >> i use a lot of positive reinforcement. she loves the ball more than food. you have to pay the dog.

especially when you are developing a young dog. you want to make sure they love what they're doing. do you work for free? >> what about drop it? so they want this, yes. good. out. drop. done. they get something they shouldn't. you have to have out. but you need to do it before they run around your house with a sock. >> so the tone of the voice, tom, how much does that matter in giving the command? >> voice inflection matters. who's such a bad girl, look at her tail. she's such a bad girl. voice inflection, right? so the way you say and the way you present information to the dog matters just like it does with people. >> tom, you are the best. can you come to my house this afternoon. >> sure. >> probably can't afford your day rate, but come anyway. >> happy national dog day, happy anniversary, happy baby on the way. give him a round of applause. we're back for the third and fourth hours. but, first, a check of your local news, weather and these messages.
