tv   Today in the Bay  NBC  August 27, 2024 6:00am-7:00am PDT

6:00 am
flames engulf a chp patrol car. we have new details. we're learning as the morning commute gets underway. some serious steps needs to be taken. this really crosses a line, doesn't it? yes it does. demanding
6:01 am
answers. five adults make their way into an east bay high school's locker room to attack a student. the district responds, leaving many parents frightened and feeling the heat coast to coast. we are tracking the bay area warm-up as millions in the midwest and across the country face those scorching temperatures. this is today in the bay. but we try to keep it nice and cool for you here on today in the bay. at least during the show. anyway, good morning to you on this tuesday. i'm marcus washington marcus cool washington and i'm laura garcia. we're going to check in with red hot mike over here just a little bit. oh red hot temperatures expected today. yeah. and it's even going to heat up for parts of the peninsula near the coast. but that's really the only area that feels some milder weather as we take a look at our bright orange sunrise looking over the south bay. and we're waking up and heading out to a nice cool morning. but our valleys will be
6:02 am
heating up today. we're talking about highs back in the mid to upper 90s and that continues through the middle of the week. but it will be cooling down on thursday and friday and looks great for our labor day weekend. but here's our highs for today. we're going to be up to 95 in livermore, 98 degrees in concord and santa rosa 93 degrees there. oakland in the low 80s and san francisco in the upper seconds. and mike, you're seeing that fog at the golden gate bridge and chp gives a warning. of course, it's not a surprise for those traveling between the north bay and the city itself. there you go. a smooth drive coming into the city. fog at the golden gate bridge. so if you're heading there, you're not used to it. you'll be prepared. over here. we're looking at not fog. this is a backup at the oakland side of the bay bridge. there was some smoke as well. we'll talk about that in a second. but i want to show you the traffic flow. it's actually only about halfway filled up to the parking lot there. slowing through. richmond started pretty early. so did slowing for highway four, but it's holding pretty steady. looks like bay point seeing a lot more slowing. and i'm
6:03 am
watching to see if there's anything reported. everything else moves. well, a crew just clearing the last one remains at brunel for northbound 680. back over to you. thank you very much, mike. 602 right now and new overnight. all lanes of the bay bridge are back open again after an overnight fire on the lower deck involving a chp cruiser. cruiser appears to be at a total loss. it all started a little after 2:00 in the morning in the eastbound direction. no one was injured. the chp is not yet saying how that fire started. well, parents are demanding answers. this is after what appears to be a targeted beating in one east bay high school now. so far, the district is not confirming anything, nor are they commenting to nbc bay area. but witnesses say that five masked attackers beat up a freshman at dublin high school. this was in the boy's locker room after school last friday, the district telling parents in an email that some of those attackers have now been identified. we spoke with one parent who says that this and other recent incidents are really leaving them fearing for their children's safety. these issues need to be addressed and
6:04 am
whoever is assaulter needs to be punished. now, witnesses say that a football coach and players, they were in that locker room and help rescue that student before he was badly injured. they also say that those attackers jumped into a waiting car and then sped off before they could even be questioned. dublin police are now investigating this. turning now to decision 2024, both presidential campaigns looking to gain support from undecided voters, republican vice presidential nominee jd vance will be in michigan today as surrogates for kamala harris's stump across wisconsin today in the bay's alice barr joins us live from washington this morning. and alice, there's a little more uncertainty now surrounding aspects of this highly anticipated presidential debate. laura, and you can understand why there is so much focus on that, because we saw how the last one completely upended the course of this presidential campaign. so now there are questions over whether
6:05 am
this next critical debate between trump and harris is going to go ahead as scheduled two weeks from today as a ton of weed. yes. today on the trail, former president trump's running mate, senator jd vance, set to speak on the economy and inflation in michigan, while vice president harris's husband campaigns in new york and senator elizabeth warren stumps for her in battleground wisconsin. but there's a roadblock in the flat out race for the white house. all of a sudden, they want to make a change in the rules because she can't answer questions in the back and forth. over a september 10th debate between the two nominees, former president trump both objecting to and seeming to agree with a request from the harris campaign to leave microphones unmuted while the other candidate is speaking, a reversal from the last trump-biden debate doesn't matter to me. i'd rather have it probably on, but the agreement was that it would be the same as it was last time. we want that
6:06 am
opportunity for the american people to see donald trump for who he is not censored, not muted, but the unfettered guy that he is going to be if he becomes president again, the former president saying he's still thinking about whether he'll even take part in the debate, accusing the host network abc news, of treating republicans unfairly. that, as he addressed a national guard conference in michigan, tying vice president harris to the chaotic u.s. withdrawal from afghanistan three years ago, 13 american service members were killed. mr. trump laying a wreath at arlington, calling it an embarrassing moment in history. miss harris writing on the anniversary my prayers are with the families and their loved ones. my heart breaks for their pain and their loss. former president trump is set to ramp up his campaign travel, with appearances scheduled yet this week in wisconsin and pennsylvania. vice president harris kicks off a bus tour of georgia, starting tomorrow, and
6:07 am
that's going to be her first time back on the campaign trail since the convention. in that interim, sources tell nbc news she has held at least one mock debate. laura. all right. it'll be interesting to see when it all comes together. alice, thank you for the latest. well, back here at home and a live look at the state capitol. this is where today's state school superintendent, tony thurmond is hosting a hearing on smartphone, social media and youth wellness. thurmond wants to consider new ways to keep children safe and healthy in the digital world. that hearing will also build on legislation enacted back in 2022 2020, allowing the district to restrict students from using cell phones while in school. some speakers are expected to share their own personal insights. this is all going to get underway this morning at 830. we've been talking about the heat wave in the bay area. well, it's actually complicating back to school plans in the midwest and ohio. they could actually see some of the hottest weather they've had all year. the heat alert stretched across
6:08 am
nearly two dozen states. officials say 63 philadelphia schools are without adequate air conditioning. they'll be dismissed early today and tomorrow. same goes for schools in michigan. officials there say while nearly all buildings have air conditioning, rising temperatures could be a strain on the schools cooling systems. it's a struggle with how warm it is, especially our 2 or 3 story buildings, to be able to keep up when it's this hot and this humid, it's just difficult for those systems to keep our kids cool enough to be able to focus on their learning. all right. meteorologist kari hall, of course, here, monitoring all of that. it is just, i mean, unbearable in some places. yeah. and i was thinking, like, back in my day, i grew up in the midwest. i was talking to her about it. we started after labor day. and so this is starting earlier. and earlier in the middle of the summer, and it's still hot, but there is actually a lot of research on the back to school cooling demand as well, and how that links into climate
6:09 am
change. and some of our northern states are dealing with the hottest, the biggest increase in that cooling demand in michigan as well as ohio up toward new york as well. and then that also includes the bay area. when we take a look at san jose, we are seeing a higher cooling trend for those schools, and they do need to put that in the budget. we are now at a 43% increase in the hotter temperatures that we are seeing. as the kids are going back to school, and we are going to have to plan for that in a warmer climate. you can check out that info on climate central.org. now here at home we are going to have a hot day for the kids that are starting out this morning in brentwood. it's going to be in the upper 60s and a few clouds. but look at the pickup time it is going to be 97 degrees. it may even have that recess indoors today because of the high heat, but it will be cooling down. we'll talk about that. but, mike, we're heading into labor day. how are those gas prices? yeah, we expect maybe a little bit of a rise
6:10 am
toward the end of the week, but we'll see. so far, holding pretty steady as we look at these gas prices. we'll get out to them on the roadways. well all of them listed today are under four bucks. we'll start in santa clara. the best is 3.85. look for platinum gas on washington street in santa clara in the north bay it's vallejo with solano county's low of 3.97 at the safeway on lincoln road west. and then finally, we'll list in the east bay. oakland has alameda county's best 3.99 at tilly gas on telegraph. i get it. telegraph avenue over here. we're looking at gasbuddy.com. that's where you can list those changes or find out where maybe you drive a little bit more, get a better deal on the roadways. we're driving more a little more folks are driving as we're looking over toward the tri valley, though it's northbound 680. there's still one crew that's listed on the grid northbound as you approach bernal. quite a bit of slowing shows up now. it may be because they're moving equipment and blocking some lanes, or there may just be that volume increase. we'll track that. that's counter to your commute. southbound is smooth all the way
6:11 am
through san ramon, out of walnut creek, but the build for highway four does indicate more traffic. we're holding pretty steady with the backup at the bay bridge. back to you. all right. thanks mike. the a's are moving to vegas, and the wheels certainly are in motion. coming up the next major step set to take place in sin city in order to make room for a new stadium. in business news, another major corporation gets rid of die out to the futures this morning. dow set a record yesterday. looks like a little money coming off the table. plus, i'm a rocket man. rocket man burning out his views of hair. long are the legend. there elton john dropping out. your chance to see the singer live in the bay area. it's gone, at least for now. we're going to tell you the two major acts now. set to replace him at dreamforce. stick around. much more ahead right here on today in the bay

6:16 am
planning to conduct the very first spacewalk ever by private citizens in a privately funded mission. and because spacex dragon capsule doesn't have an airlock, that means they're just going to open the nose like a front door, meaning the other two astronauts on board will definitely want to make sure their spacesuits are operating properly as well. the other interesting part of the mission is the orbit over the course of five days, polaris dawn will reach an apogee. now, that's the highest point of the orbit. more than 870 miles from earth. that's farther away than any spacecraft has ever been since the apollo program. again, they'll try for tomorrow. facebook's mark zuckerberg says he regrets bending to the government's pressure to take down certain posts users made during the pandemic about covid. he made those comments in a letter to a house committee. zuckerberg says he'll push back if it happens again. i believe the government pressure was wrong, he said. i regret that we were not more outspoken about it. i feel strongly we should

landmark san francisco restaurant is hiring. yeah. so, according to the standard, the new owner of julius castle looking for a chef to head up the restaurant, paul scott, actually spent the past 12 years renovating this 102 year old tourist attraction. he's faced a lot of construction obstacles, but he's getting closer to reopening the famous doors along montgomery street. he actually purchased that property in a bankruptcy sale in 2012. when it actually comes to the chef, he tells us that the. well, the paper anyway, that he's looking for someone with a continuity who will actually pay homage to the julius castle. pretty famous there. yeah, i wouldn't know what that means, though, because the castle. like, what kind of food would that oh, it was really. it was like high end. yeah. i've never been there. yeah i would bring it down. i call it orange julius castle. drinks and hot dogs and great southern cafe. oh, that would be
6:20 am
good. all right. we're going to need something iced today. that is for sure. yeah, especially this afternoon. it's going to be heating up. and at least we are starting out nice and mild. we're in the mid 50s in san francisco. you can see the fog over the golden gate bridge. we're in the low 60s elsewhere as we are starting out with a calm wind and a clear sky as we take a look at our air quality. this is going to start to get a little bit worse today due to the high pressure just pushing everything down. if we can carpool, catch public transit, all of that helps to reduce the amount of pollutants that we're putting out there, because there won't be much of a wind to help mix things out. we are going to see some moderate air quality. and if you are sensitive to unhealthy air quality, you do want to limit your time outside today. but we're probably doing that anyway because our temperatures are going to be heating up, headed for the mid 90s in martinez livermore, 9588, in fremont and will be in the upper 80s as well for palo alto in san francisco, upper 70s and
6:21 am
low to mid 90s for much of the north bay. ukiah, the hottest at 99 degrees. and tomorrow may be even hotter there, but much of the rest of the bay area seeing the numbers coming down a degree or two. and that will be the trend toward the end of the wee, gradually cooling off while we are going to still have some mild coastal temperatures, the inland valleys are going to be hot in the upper 80s and low 90s, so we do still have high pressure in control. but look at what happens just in time for our holiday weekend. an area of low pressure develops. it moves into the pacific northwest and with its counterclockwise wind flow, that's going to reinforce our sea breeze, help bring in the cooler temperatures even to the inland valleys. and we are going to see things coming down with our temperatures into the low 80s and our inland spots like livermore going from upper 90s today to upper 80s on friday. and then on sunday we're going to see a high of 83 degrees and also nice and mild for labor day. but we do still
6:22 am
have a few more days to sweat it out. with highs in the 90s, up to 90 degrees on thursday. while in san francisco we go from mid 70s to upper 60s. and mike takes us back to that delay in the tri valley. yeah, we still see that northbound 680 and then southbound builds because the commute volume is building. that's traditional opposite your commute. we usually don't see this slowing, but there's one crew that remains traveling north toward bernal. the judging by those sensors, i think those crews are moving now, but still expect that if you're traveling from sunol up toward dublin, san ramon and in danville imminently, as we're looking at the rest of the commute, we're showing your typical build coming 880 southbound out of san leandro, off the castro valley, y, and then down in toward hayward in union city, a smooth flow for the south bay. we'll see that build starting up and vasco road still under a half hour out of contra costa county. back to you. thank you mike. well, if you're having olympics withdrawal, don't worry. they're back. paris is getting ready for the paralympic games opening ceremony happening tomorrow. up

concern and doubt plaguing teachers and families in san francisco schools. the message they're sending today. with the district facing tough decisions on possible closures. it causes more injuries, but what concerns me the most is the toxic chemical. there aren't enough fields to fit them all. and if we do have fields, we have really poor grass like parks that are lumpy and bumpy. a turf war in the south bay. we're live with a make or break vote. that may ban artificial athletic fields and the potential fallout for youth sports. this is today in the bay good tuesday morning to you. 630 right now. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. want to get you caught up on what's happening with that forecast this morning. meteorologist kari hall is tracking those temperatures for us. and, kari, how are things looking out there? it's going to be heating up for the inland valleys, but still staying nice and mild in san francisco. as we can see, the fog right over the
6:32 am
golden gate bridge. that's going to keep those temperatures down, at least for the next few hours. eventually clearing out here with highs reaching into the low 70s and then for parts of the downtown area. the mission district will be in the upper 70s today, but across the bay into oakland it will be 83 degrees. and the farther you go inland, those temperatures go up. it will be as hot as 99 degrees today in the bay area in ukiah. we'll see san jose's high temperature up to 90 degrees and 95 in livermore. eventually we'll cool down as we head into our holiday weekend, so we'll take a look at that in a few minutes. and mike, you're starting with the changes in the south bay. subtle, but we see those sensors starting to slow a bit. look at this. not only 101 up here by oakland road, but also down there from time to time. we just saw the yellow pop up around capital expressway. a little heavier volume expected. so we'll watch for early slowing for 87 as well. typical build for the nimitz freeway. looks like the last of those crews around bernal may be clearing from northbound 680 southbound. continues to build out of contra costa county and in through the tri valley over here we see also more build for highway 242. so
6:33 am
that indicates more traffic coming down through that portion of contra costa county. the 680 corridor standard build throughout the rest of the east bay. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. well, new overnight for you. at least one person in critical condition. this is after a crash near san francisco city hall. now, police are telling us that a motorcyclist and a bicyclist crashed at market and south venice streets after midnight. an officer telling our photographer there at the scene. multiple people were taken to the hospital as a result of that crash. at last check, south venice remains closed due to that investigation. well, now to a developing story. investigators still trying to piece together why a wrong way driver triggered a head-on crash, which killed a san jose woman and her young passenger. the tragedy led to an hours long closure of northbound highway 85 in san jose. chilling dash cam video captured images of the white truck. the chp says slammed into a tesla shortly before 4 p.m. yesterday, just south of santa teresa boulevard. a 47 year old woman and her 14

year old passenger died in that tesla. authorities are not saying if the two are related. the pickup truck driver suffered major injuries, just a few cars behind the crash. someone in those cars explains the chaos. i've seen accidents all my life in the bay area. this seemed to be different. it had a really not an eerie feeling. it does make me think how how life is so fleeting and anything can happen at a blink of an eye. you just never know. the chp says the pickup driver was a 39 year old florida man with a prior history of dui cited earlier this year for driving without a license. they also say he was driving in the wrong direction for several miles prior to that crash. 634 for you right now and happening today, san francisco unified school district expected to give an update on the realignment of
6:35 am
schools in the city. this is as teachers make an urgent call for the district. they say more staffing is critical despite the looming announcements for school closures happening just a few weeks from now. today in the bay's ginger conejero saab joins us from our newsroom this morning. ginger, this all comes amidst a recent shakeup in leadership as well. that is correct. lots happening at sfusd. laura and marcus school board president laney motamedi has announced she is stepping down, citing personal health issues. the newest member of the board of education, phil kim, was sworn in last friday. now, the leadership change comes as parents and teachers will be out rallying this evening, calling for the hiring of more teachers, counselors and other staff for the district. the united educators of san francisco say they strongly disagree with the delay of hires from the california department of education, and that starting the school year with over 100 classroom vacancies is simply unacceptable. i sat down with the superintendent of sfusd, doctor matt wayne, right before
6:36 am
the school year kicked off. he said the district, although not where it wants to be, is trying to make progress. we are starting the year in a better place than we were last year, with more positions filled. we think, you know, the salary increase that we gave to our educators really helped. and then we've also been improving how we're staffing our schools and going through that process. and so we're we're pleased to be in a better place. the teachers union and their supporters will make their demands loud and clear at tonight's school board meeting. it is calling for an emergency protest at 530. before that, school board meeting. now, these transitions come as a district continues to face a huge announcement. the superintendent expected to share his recommendations for school closures on september 18th. that is something the board will have to vote on, likely in december. back to you. all right. thanks, ginger. well, in the south bay,
6:37 am
a key vote amid health concerns about your kids and artificial turf where they play sports today in the bay's bob redell. joining us live from santa clara this morning. and bob in santa clara county supervisors there actually set to consider this ban right? correct. later this afternoon. good morning to marcus and laura. there are concerns over artificial grass fields like the one behind me here. we're next to levi's stadium at the santa clara county youth soccer field. concerns that these could be releasing hemp chemicals that are harmful to people. this afternoon, the santa clara county board of supervisors will vote on an ordinance. there should be a new ordinance that would ban the installation of artificial turf on county owned properties and would require that existing turf be ripped out, if not properly maintained. the santa clara county medical association supports the ban because it says chemicals in the fake grass have been linked to cancer. another group called mothers out front silicon valley, says artificial turf poses a particular health risk to children who play sports on
6:38 am
these fields. it causes more injuries, but what concerns me the most is the toxic chemical soup of chemicals that's in it. this ban would hurt the ability to produce more fields in the bay area. so fields like this, we pack in 7 to 8 teams a night every hour. we're practicing on these fields. opponents of the proposed ban say there aren't enough real grass fields in the county, and among those that do exist, many are lumpy and bumpy and hard to maintain. they also point out artificial turf has evolved with safer surfaces and eco friendly materials. the board of supervisors did ask the public health department, talking about the santa clara county public health department to weigh in. as you mentioned, the public health department acknowledges some health risks from artificial turf, but says conclusions are mixed and don't provide a strong argument for or against this potential ban. reporting live here in santa clara, bob redell. today in the bay. thank you bob. and our coverage continues with
6:39 am
meteorologist kari hall. she has been taking a closer look at why the surf band started in the first place. yeah. and so we're going from some of the sports complexes and soccer fields to our lawns and turning into our climate in crisis. today, there is a lot of talk about banning artificial turf in california, and it's all from a new bill governor newsom signed last week, which gives cities the right to prohibit fake turf. and san mateo is one of the first cities to do so. this all stems from that major drought that we had a few years ago, and artificial turf was thought to be a water saving alternative to grass. but recent research has shown that fake grass is not greener on the other side. synthetic turf releases harmful chemicals and microplastics that are linked to developmental delays in children and even cancer. and here are some healthy alternatives we need to use immediately. visit your local plant nursery. they can give you some insight on low maintenance, drought tolerant native plants to put in your lawn. look into bermudagrass or

reservists yesterday, marking the third anniversary of the american withdrawal from afghanistan. three years ago, america ended its longest war it's ever fought. more than 20 years. in the final moments, 13 marines were killed by a terrorist at abbey gate with a chaotic withdrawal and the complete collapse of the american trained afghan army in a just a matter of days. this is the graphic that we used at the time, and i think it still holds up. politically, trump is trying to pin some of the blame on his opponent, vice president harris. historians will say there's plenty of blame to go around. it was trump's administration that negotiated the withdrawal with the taliban at the doha accords. according to the timeline. but ultimately, it was joe biden who was commander in chief at the time. and as harry truman said, the buck stops there. trump is for the second day casting doubt on whether he'll show up for the september 10th presidential debate. both camps had agreed on

that date and agreed to be on abc, but now trump says he's not so sure. i think abc is really should be shut out. i'd much rather do it on nbc. i'd much rather do it on cbs. frankly, i think cbs is very unfair, but the best of the group, and certainly i do it on fox. i'd even do it on cnn. i thought cnn treated us very fairly the last time. a bipartisan congressional committee investigating what went wrong during that rally in pennsylvania last july, when a gunman was able to access a close by building, take a shot at the former president. here they are touring the grounds of the butler farm show grounds. the task force here is co-chaired by pennsylvania congressman mike kelly. he's from butler, and he was at the rally when the shooting took place. the most important thing is it recognizes we are us representatives, not democrats, not republicans, but both searching for the answers and reassuring the american people that we can work together and we

coming in closer to shore just because in particular, anchovies showing up in big numbers, 10,000 pounds for all of those whales, a lot of anchovies out there. well, jessamyn is also the co-founder of happy well, and it's a website used by researchers and citizen scientists to keep track of those wells around the world. so then, if we know that there's a shortage on anchovies for our pizza and caesar salad, we know why. whales? yeah, those whales. all right. kind of cool, though, when you see something. yeah. it is a beautiful sight. all right, well, the beach is probably want to flock there because it's going to be so hot. yes. it's going to be hot again for the inland valleys. and we have seen that cooling fog near the coast. take a look at this view from our sutro tower camera. and you can only see the very tip top of the golden gate bridge there and right there. but overall, we are seeing that fog keeping the city cool and it's just such a cool sight. well, we're right now at 56 degrees in the city. it's 59 in oakland, a cool morning all

across the bay area as you're getting up and heading out the door. but then as we know, we're going to see those temperatures heating up. and with this high pressure right over us, it's pushing all of that pollutants and the air quality is suffering as a result of that sinking air that we are seeing moderate air quality as we go throughout the day. so you might want to limit your time outside, especially if you have any kinds of health conditions, breathing problems or heart condition. today it is going to be hot. this is the hottest day of the week with our highs in the upper 90s. for much of the east bay, we're up to 86 today in hayward, 83 in oakland, but much of the north bay will be in the low 90s. santa rosa today, 93 degrees. we're up to 99 in ukiah today and in san francisco, we're going to see a high of 77 as we take it into the day tomorrow. only slightly cooler there near the coast. and some of our temperatures coming down a degree or two, like san jose, will be up to 88 degrees with a high of 95 in livermore.
