6:01 am
the weekend. this is today in the bay saddle on up on this hump day because we are coasting down to the weekend. on this wednesday morning. you like that? where are you going this weekend? a lot of visuals. that was a lot of visuals. wow. good morning. i'm laura garcia. let's get a look at the forecast. if you're going to saddle up or no, it looks great. no matter what you have planned. but it will be heating up for the afternoon once again. we just got to get to work, and you're probably using a vehicle, not a camel or a horse or anything. we are going to see those temperatures in san mateo in the upper 50s at 7:00, and then it's going to be sunny throughout the day. a lot of us enjoying sunshine, but then going into late morning into the afternoon, we are going to see some spots across the bay area back to where we need the air conditioning for the afternoon. we're up to 96 in livermore, 97 in fairfield.
6:02 am
we're seeing a lot of 90s in the north bay, santa rosa today, 91 and in san francisco will be in the upper 70s tomorrow. we're looking at slight cool down near the coast, but a lot of our valleys are still going to be in the upper 80s and low 90s. but by friday we're getting some relief and it will feel much more comfortable, especially for parts of the inner bay as well as the east bay. so we'll talk more about this coming up. mike, you're seeing some unexpected changes going on. yeah. improvements. that's the word you don't typically hear after 6 a.m. but first we'll show you the one that we kind of forget about. this first burst eases up about 5 or 10 minutes from now. so that's through san jose. right on schedule for that first burst and the first clearing over here. great improvement through the area north through pleasanton. the earlier issue was construction combined with the crash of a dump truck, had the bed raised and it actually hit the sign signs. okay. so they can reopen all lanes there and there's recovery. now this is also typical. the build south

880 coming through hayward. that's in the commute direction. that's getting a little slower. a full recovery for north 880 past the earlier car fire. the traffic break i think it happened here. west 24 approaching 580. we'll track that a little bit of slowing. back to you. all right. thanks mike. well, happening today, a criminal trial scheduled to begin for three men accused of a deadly shooting of an oakland police officer. that officer died in late december while responding to a burglary call at a cannabis dispensary. today in the bay's ginger conejero saab is live for us and ginger, this is a case that has already included some major revelations. some people are saying that one of those defendants should not have been out on the streets. that's right, marcus, there are three men who are accused of murder in this case. and then there is a fourth defendant who is charged with three counts of second degree burglary, but a couple of months ago or several months ago, i should say it was revealed that one of the defendants, one of the men accused of officer lay's murder,
6:04 am
brian russell, was on probation at the time of his arrest, court documents show alameda county district attorney pamela price dismissed charges against russell. now, just months before officer lay's shooting, which included kidnaping to commit a robbery or sex crime and special allegations for use of a firearm with regards to officer lay's murder, russell faces murder charges with a special allegation of felony murder and three counts of second degree burglary. he is joined by two other men, mark sanders and alan star brown, who are also charged of murder and will also stand trial starting today. that is after an alameda county judge found that prosecutors showed enough evidence that the accused men, quote, knew or should have known that officer twan lay was a police officer engaged in his duties at the time of his murder. based on the court's finding, at least one of the defendants, mark sanders, faces a possible sentence of life without the possibility of parole. now, as i mentioned earlier, there is a fourth
6:05 am
defendant in this case, marcus cooper. the alameda court found that cooper was not a major participant in officer lay's murder, but he will be on trial for second degree burglary, three counts of that. and he was also he also had bail of $75,000. now, back in january, oakland police, as well as other law enforcement agencies paid tribute to officer lay, who was shot in the head and died at a hospital just hours after responding to a burglary. at that cannabis dispensary. lay was 36 years old. he was the first oakland police officer killed in nearly 15 years. now the trial begins at nine in oakland this morning, the three men who are accused of murder are expected to be in court in san francisco, ginger conejero saab today in the bay. such a sad story. still remember that? all right, ginger, thank you. well, we are learning new details about a fiery crash in san diego which claimed the life of a police officer. investigators say 30 year old

and trump presidential campaigns are ramping up stops in key swing states. it all comes as the former president is facing a new legal challenge and indictment from special counsel today in the bay alice barr joins us live from washington with the latest on now some new developments. alice good morning. good morning laura. this new revised indictment brings former president trump's legal battles back to the forefront at a critical time in the campaign. this morning, a new effort to hold former president trump criminally responsible for trying to overturn the results of the 2020 election, culminating in the january 6th capitol attack. in a revised indictment, the department of justice charging mr. trump with the same four counts, including conspiracy to defraud the united states and obstruct an official proceeding. but stripping out references to certain official acts to comply with last month's supreme court decision that found former presidents are immune from prosecution for much of their

official conduct while in office. former president trump slamming the new superseding indictment as persecution of a political opponent. he's long contended former presidents need absolute immunity to protect their power to act. you're not going to do anything if you don't have immunity, because otherwise you're going to be prosecuted after you leave office. in the new documents, special counsel jack smith strikes some conduct. the supreme court said was off limits, including the former president leaning on his justice department to support false claims of a rigged election. but it retains allegations about pressuring former vice president mike pence into not certifying the election results. what's added is lots and lots of language saying that pence acted as either a candidate or as president of the senate. in other words, not as an official piece of action, and that trump was acting also in an unofficial way. it all comes as the former president's reelection bid hits a critical stretch, campaigning
6:09 am
in wisconsin tomorrow as his rival, vice president harris and running mate governor tim walz kick off a bus tour in georgia today. the trump legal team is expected to try to get this new indictment thrown out, arguing that there are fatal flaws still contained in it under the supreme court's reasoning, it is anticipated this appeals process is going to stretch out for months well beyond the november election. laura? yeah. no doubt. all right. thank you, alice, for the very latest developments. 608 for you, this morning, angry parents and school workers expressing frustration. this is with the san francisco school board members. so last night they packed the board meeting, which took place at a new leadership. this is after the former board president stepped down. the district is facing that decision on closure due to declining enrollment, with many of those schools. opponents made the desperate plea for the board to reconsider. the district maintained it is now working on the best plan to redistribute those students to remaining
6:10 am
schools. a recommended list of closures is due next month, and while the union is demanding the district fill its vacant positions, the district says that it's committed to sustainable financial practices. it is 609 on a wednesday morning. we're halfway through that workweek, sun coming up over the bay area, making way for a nice day. some are hanging on. guess you can keep the white pants out before labor day. kari. before and after. because even next week it's going to be hot as we get a brief break in between. so as we take a look at what to expect in antioch today, it will be in the mid 60s. as you're stepping out the door at 8:00. we're at 70 degrees, and then we can see those temperatures climbing as we go throughout the day. at noon it is 88 degrees. we're headed for the mid to upper 90s for later today. not much of a wind, only about 10 to 15mph and getting a little bit more breezy for the evening. but right at about sunset we'll start to feel some much more comfortable air. it
6:11 am
will be in the upper seconds at 9:00 this evening, and we are looking at some hot valley temperatures, but we'll talk about our holiday weekend coming up. mike. we usually start to see gas prices going up around this time, and it seems to be the case. although our prices aren't necessarily dramatically climbing, we see the rest of the state coming up on the list, so we'll watch that. this is all relative to what you see at your gas station. so in cupertino, their best is 389 at great gas on north deanza boulevard. not bad there. contra costa county will call out the low of 389 there as well. clayton gas and wash on clayton road in concord, just north of the clayton city line and a much higher low at san francisco. we have for this the best gasoline mini mart. that's the name of it on san jose avenue. it's the best price for that city. 419 not far from the balboa park. bart station. you decide if it's cheaper to pay gas or to pay for bart. get out to the roadways, folks. after you check gasbuddy.com a smooth flow of traffic for the

most part, much better. oakland 880. all traffic cleared past the fifth. the earlier car fire has cleared and so is this westbound 24 approaching 580. the earlier crash cleared both vehicles from the middle of the freeway. good recovery. that's great. 24 sees no slowing through the caldecott either. now the bay bridge that sees the backup filled in all the lanes. still nice off the 880 overcrossing, at least for some of the folks heading to that secondary toll plaza, 580 starts to build through richmond, as well as the north bay 37 and highway four. back to you. thanks, mike. history in the south bay. up next, the first of its kind celebration for the transgender community. happening today. plus, is it wednesday? no, it's nvidia day. there may be big moves ahead for the most important stock on the stock market. speaking of let's go out to the futures this morning. had a string of wins. it looks like we're going to be really kind of quiet as we wait for nvidia to report. well hopefully someone's feeling lucky out there mike because i mean scott because if you are well this wednesday morning maybe you hit maybe not

morning, it is all clear and our temperatures will be at 60 degrees at 9:00. a mix of sun and clouds and breezy winds. we're going to keep it cool here with some low 70s. some of the valleys headed for the upper seconds once again, so we'll talk about the range and our microclimates coming up. i like this view as well. this is the south bay san jose, those hills silhouetted in the sunrise and actually that traffic flow is what i'm thinking is beautiful. north 280 showing a nice drive past 17 880. the build is on though. we'll show you more coming up. well good morning. very happy wednesday to you. apple is going to lay off around 100 workers. very rare for this company. the news first reported by bloomberg. the cuts mostly coming from apple books and apple news and it's nvidia day. the santa clara company will report profits after the closing bell. easily the most important, most watched stock on the stock market. nvidia's rapid rise has made a lot of workers very

wealthy. here's a statistic for you. about two years ago, nvidia was worth $290 billion and then openai created chatgpt. and after that nvidia is worth three and a third trillion dollars. meantime, lots of americans who don't work at nvidia say they're having trouble achieving the american dream. a wall street journal poll found 95% of americans say saving for retirement is important, but 9% say they're saving enough. 89% of americans say buying a home is important, but just 10% say it's possible. housing is getting more expensive. the latest case-shiller numbers show house prices in the study's 20 city index hit all new time highs in june. prices in san francisco are up nearly 5% compared to last year. the polaris dawn astronauts will not be going to space today. bad weather caused the latest scrub. the second delay the mission will when it finally goes, take

astronauts farther away from earth since the apollo missions. congress has worries about dji drones. they're the best selling. many would say the best drones on the market. but dji is chinese. congress wants to ban their sales, so dji plans to license its technology to an american company. just have that company build the drones. a congressional committee says that's a drone clone, a workaround to get around the ban on chinese products. and the nfl has changed its rules to allow private equity to buy into teams. private equity is just a pool of money and baseball and other sports have allowed this for years. the nfl prefers single owners, but teams have gotten so expensive it's just not possible. there are restrictions. the nfl still has to approve the purchase. a limited number of private equity firms are allowed to participate, and probably most importantly, no sovereign wealth funds. other countries cannot own our nfl teams. i think everyone's a little xenophobic
6:19 am
when it comes to sports, right? i mean, we saw what happened to golf, but in england, you know, you're seeing that where americans are buying all the soccer teams, the football teams, and people are upset. and i kind of get it. yeah, exactly. yeah. you see it try to do something for the communities and yeah, you bought one and it's kind of crazy. but you know he's winning him over i guess i guess. all right. thank you. 618 right now. new at 6:00. history being made in the south bay with santa clara county's first ever event celebrating the changing of names and gender markers. today's celebration is meant to recognize people who've already obtained or planned to file for a name and or gender marker change. anyone seeking the change can do so today at the old courthouse in san jose, and they'll receive a certificate signed by a judge commemorating the change. there will also be resources to help anyone looking to update their identity documents. it all starts a little before noon for you this morning. the mega millions jackpot is growing. yes, that's because no one won last night's

drawing. but maybe you want a smaller prize. here are a list of those numbers for you. 1618, 21. 54. 65. five. the jackpot is now at $627 million. now, if you do win, the cash option is $309 million. the next drawing is on friday. wishing me luck. wishing me luck. wishing me luck and luck weather wise. not necessarily what i want, but you know what? i'll take it. carey, you're under contract. you can't quit. i'll just buy that thing out. okay, let's get started. this morning with a live look outside in dublin. beautiful sunrise and we are going to see a lot of sun today. we're already starting out pretty warm in some spots at 9:00 here. we're in the low 70s and then a quick climb in those temperatures headed close to 90 degrees and we will have another day where we're cranking up the ac. you might need to win the lottery to pay your electric bill this month. it's going to be 93 degrees in los gatos today, and 92 in morgan hill.
6:21 am
we're in the upper seconds for the interior. east bay, antioch, 98 degrees vallejo today, 86. we'll also be 86. in hayward, near the coast. still pretty comfortable. half moon bay, 71 and 86, in redwood city in san francisco, 75, in the mission district, the outer sunset, 67 degrees. but in the north bay. we're back to the 90s in napa, sonoma, santa rosa, 91 102 degrees in ukiah. today, we've had the influence of high pressure and a lot of high heat across the region. but as we go into the weekend, this area of low pressure develops and as it moves into the pacific northwest, that's going to bring in a stronger sea breeze and also more clouds. if you're traveling there north for the labor day weekend, anticipate the possibility of some rain. we're going to see our temperatures coming down just briefly, so napa will go from a high of 90 on saturday to mid 80s for sunday into monday, and
6:22 am
then next week we're back to the heat. so it's still very much summer and we are not seeing much of an end to it with the exception of that brief pause that we get this weekend with highs in the low to mid 80s. san francisco will see also a slight dip in temperatures upper 60s on saturday. mike you're looking at a backup out of cocoa county. yeah. back up behind me right here. this is west 580, the bridge from richmond to san rafael slows. you see that on the sensors as well. we had early slowing start in richmond but it stays about the same now into berkeley. back up at the bay bridge. highway 37 highway 4 pretty standard pattern. look right there. 242 starts to show the build, indicating walnut creek and lafayette and in toward the caldecott tunnel. those would be the commute. routes that build 680 rarely shows slowing down through danville and san ramon. but northbound we do have the slowing. still only the fast lane open as you cross underneath the 580 overcrossing. there may be some crews in the area from overnight work. back to you. thanks mike. going to get busy the labor day weekend

you'll need to prepare for those crowds. tsa projects an 8% increase from last year alone. labor day travel weekend will start tomorrow and go until next wednesday. friday is expected to be the peak travel day. sunday and monday will most likely be the busiest for drivers. many people are traveling because gas prices are down $0.50 from where they were a year ago. airfare has also gone down. the tsa said they're prepared for this influx of travelers. we are staffed up and ready to support. as reported, we're anticipating about 17 million passengers that we will screen through the system starting tomorrow, thursday, through through next wednesday, september 4th. and we are staffed up and ready to go. well, the tsa says flying on saturday and returning on tuesday or wednesday can help you avoid some of those crowds. well, we've got a lot more ahead for you at 630, including that heartbreaking update on the mother and son killed by a wrong-way driver on the san jose

freeway. the new details being revealed about the man police say is responsible for that tragic crash, and the way both are being remembered. a number of recent violent incidents at bay area schools. the action some campuses are taking to make sure students are safe. stay with us. you're watching

i'll say what city hall insiders won't. we have a drug, homelessness, and economic recovery crisis, because the system that's supposed to fix things is the problem. record budgets. fewer officers. business killing bureaucracy. the insiders won't change a system built for their benefit. i'm daniel lurie and san francisco needs a mayor unafraid to take on the status quo, bring accountability, and stop the excuses.
6:30 am
i'm a mess. i'm an absolute mes. and i'm not the only one. i've talked to so many parents this morning who are in the exact same predicament right now. at 630, violence once again flaring up on some bay area school campuses. the latest case a violent lunchtime stabbing in the east bay. the new calls this morning for increased security caught on camera. a burglar targets a vallejo bridal shop. how one brave neighbor helped stop that suspect right in his tracks. plus, the paralympics set to start in just a matter of hours in paris. this one already a record breaker. we have everything you need to know ahead of the action. this is today in the bay. and here we go. already? wednesday morning, 630 right now. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. let's get a look at that forecast for you today. meteorologist kari hall has been telling us about how that heat
6:31 am
will continue today. yeah, for a lot of the valleys, it's been pretty hot these past few days. and we're seeing more of the same today coming down a couple of degrees in some spots. so as we take a look at our view in walnut creek this morning, you're stepping out the door to already a warmer morning. we're in the mid 60s in fremont. as you get the kids up and out the door for school at drop-off time, it will be 65 degrees. so a light jacket for the start of the day, but at pick up time it will be t-shirt and shorts. weather as we head for the mid 80s and eventually reaching a high of 88 degrees, it will be 89 in san jose and 96 in livermore, and for much of the north bay will be in the low 90s. so we'll talk about changes again. but mike, you were still worried about a sign hanging over i-680 because i want to make sure it stays hanging over. yeah, something hit it earlier. it was a dump truck with the bed raised. it hit the sign, and they're still inspecting it. so we still have only the fast lane open northbound 680 approaching 580. that dublin interchange. unusual slowing counter to what your typical commute is. the commute itself 580 and 680
6:32 am
southbound off of westbound 580. that's starting to build pretty standard over there. we're looking at the south bay, with the northbound 101 showing more slowing, and that would typically build about now. so we're right on schedule for the south bay. no delays in the east on the peninsula. the east bay shows a pretty typical pattern with that build. carey just showed you the live cam slowing 680 south through walnut creek. back to you. all right. thank you mike. well, you know, students at another bay area high school rattled by on campus violence. the latest incident happening over at hayward high school. that's where we found find today in the bay's bob redell. he is live for us there this morning. and, bob, you know, i'm sure that they are really working to make sure that those students feel safe. but there is so much of a concern there for a lot of the parents, as well as those students with so much violence happening at these bay area schools. good morning to you, marcus. well hayward high has said that they will be having campus security increase this after monday's knife attack here on campus.
6:33 am
this was this is when two kids were stabbed during a lunchtime fight. again this past monday. a three students were apparently arguing when one allegedly pulled out a knife and cut the other two students. both of those students went to the hospital. they are expected to be okay. here is a parent who is concerned for her own child's safety. after hearing about monday's knife attack. you don't want to lose a child, especially to violence like this, especially when you trust the people you know, you drop them off here and they're responsible for taking care of our babies and they don't. hayward police is investigating. they did question the student who allegedly stabbed the other student. so far, no arrests. we've learned new details about an attack this past friday at dublin high school. police say a 15 year old student who was assaulted on campus was first confronted by a parent. investigators say the parent and four teens, the teens who were in hoodies, followed the student
6:34 am
into the boy's locker room. that's when the group allegedly assaulted him, then took off. paramedics did rush the teenager to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. dublin police have not identified the teens involved in the attack, but they say they are between the ages of 16 and 19 years of age. pd does not believe that this was a random incident and they continue to investigate. you may recall last week a student at san francisco's galileo high school was shot just off campus. one witness says one witness. excuse me? says they saw two teenagers fighting when one pulled out a gun. the injured student was expected to recover. it's not clear if the suspected teenage shooter is also a student. police have not commented on whether they've identified the shooter or if there's been an arrest. reporting live here in hayward. bob redell today in the bay. so much going on. students shouldn't have to worry about their own safety at school, at least at school. so tough right now. all right, bob, thank you. well, happening now, a deadly shooting in the east bay is
6:35 am
under investigation. it happened shortly before 4:00 in the. yes, in the afternoon yesterday on 25th and international boulevard in oakland. police say someone shot a victim in a parking lot of a dollar tree store. if you know anything about the shootin, call oakland police. new details. this morning on the mother and son killed monday in a wrong-way head-on crash in the south bay. authorities still have not officially identified the victims, but an email sent to parents by san jose's summit tahoma charter school confirms the 14 year old was a freshman there. one of the mother's coworkers confirms she worked remotely and had gone to pick up her son. chilling video shows a pickup truck headed in the wrong direction on northbound highway 85 prior to that crash. the chp says the pickup driver is still in the hospital with major injuries. at this point now for this crash, we are definitely looking at felony manslaughter charges. there may be additional charges that that result as a as
6:36 am
the investigation continues. officers are still looking into whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs and say he has a previous arrest record, including dui, earlier this year. they say he was cited for driving without a license. well, the owner of a vallejo bridal shop is expressing his gratitude for a good samaritan who stepped in to help stop a suspected thief. now, this was all caught on camera. it happened early in the morning hours. this was last friday at alexis holmes bridal on tennessee street. so the cameras there, they actually can show the intruder there, smashing the windows and the glass door causing thousands of dollars in damage. now, the store owner says the workers were alerted by the alarm system quickly responding. but so did a man who lives nearby who actually saw what was happening and then intervened. he actually stopped the suspect holding them until the police arrived. we were able to communicate with the vigilante that a lot of people
6:37 am
are, you know, calling the batman. you know, we've been in contact with them and, you know, we've we've, you know, said thank you. now, police say the unidentified suspect was already wanted for a previous burglary. they say they also had $300 in stolen merchandise on them. 636 for you this morning in that excitement is hitting a fever pitch in the city of light. the paralympics began today in pari, and we are looking live right now at the arc de triomphe. and we are just hours away from the opening ceremony, and it's already set a record for the most tickets sold. 4500 athletes are set to compete across 22 sports over 11 days. one athlete who is a force to be reckoned with in the pool is olivia chambers, competing for team usa. she has an eye condition. she uses a guide dog, but she says being in the water is what brings her peace to her own animal. within once i hit the

water, i just get right into it. you know the feel of the water, as we say. and you just go. i like to cheer myself on a lot. just in my mind. there's just something different about diving in the water and being in your own lane. you're in your own world. good for you, olivia. you can keep up with all the action on peacock. opening ceremony streams live at 10:00 this morning. and i love i love the paralympics. so inspirational. they truly are. you know what? and for a look at that forecast over in paris, day one. of course, meteorologist kari hall has a look at that. no, the olympics actually had some rain. it had some heat. pretty much the same. it looks like pretty much the same. it won't be as hot as we saw with the olympics, but we are still in the mid 80s. we're headed for the upper 80s and then overnight we'll see those lows dropping down into the low 60s. now tomorrow we'll see those temperatures climbing once again, and at least for now, the rain is holding off. but then looking ahead, there will be some showers in the forecast on friday. saturday is looking good, but a little warm and then a chance of
6:39 am
thunderstorms in the forecast from sunday into tuesday. so we'll be watching out what's happening there as well as here at home as we take a live look outside in san francisco. beautiful start to our wednesday morning, but the inland heat will continue today. there will be some more wind and cooling from friday into our holiday weekend, but then we just take a brief break before that heat returns early next week. take a look at our highs for today. get a look at your microclimate and what to expect. we are seeing temperatures ranging from 71 in half moon bay to 102 degrees in ukiah this afternoon. we'll once again talk about the weekend. but mike, you were saying that the jam is building up in pleasanton. yeah, we expect southbound off the dublin interchange and the interchange itself to be the factor. and it is slowing, but it's northbound 680 where since early this morning there was a crash that hit, i believe one of the overhead signs as you approach the dublin interchange. it's not the cement structure i believe it's a sign overhead that does block or it goes over those right lanes. so only the left

lane is open right now because that's not impacted as they're trying to determine whether or not the integrity of that sign is okay for traffic to go underneath it again. so folks are dramatically slowing here as you pass by las positas, because that's the last exit before you pass the lane closures that will continue to build coming out of sunol and in toward pleasanton. but right now it's only in pleasanton for that northbound stretch in the south bay, you have a pretty typical build for northbound 101, and there's a concert tonight at sap center. so watch that. that will mean some crowds arriving after. but it's an 8:00 concert, so that shouldn't impact the evening commute. a smooth drive on the peninsula, the east bay. aside from that section of 680, no surprises out of the tri-valley. and in the city we have a couple of concerts. so keep in mind, if you're taking mass transit there, you have the muni twin peaks tunnel upgrade continues all week. so there's the adjustment on sfmta .org. back to you. good to know. thanks, mike. an unusual social media trend is taking off for boys and young men. the theory chewing extra hard gum will lead you to

a more chiseled jawline. but does it really work? and what are dentists saying? up next, we'll have a closer look. somehow i think i already know what the dentists are going to say. yes, we'll have a full wrap up of who's doing what on the campaign trail, plus a really interesting ten year anniversary. that's all coming up. plus i want to get back to my city. by the way, two legendary bands take the stage and the city by the bay, and we've got everything you need to know, including just how much those last minute tickets will cost you. keep it right here. you're watching today in the bay chu

adult son in southern italy. following a landslide. it happened in a small town about 20 miles northeast of naples. the pair were traveling in a three wheeler. crews found that wreckage in the mud. the landslide also forced several people from their homes. now to decision 2024 and the controversy over donald trump's appearance at arlington national cemetery earlier this week. scott mcgrew joins us now. the cemetery says there was some sort of incident. some incident that's pretty much all the cemetery is saying. so npr was
6:45 am
the first to report a cemetery official tried to restrict a trump photographer. the cemetery will only say there was, quote, an incident and a report was filed. obviously, we are trying to find that report. cemetery rules say you are not supposed to use the cemetery as a backdrop for campaigns. trump was there on monday to mark the third anniversary of the withdrawal from afghanistan. absolutely solemn ceremony at the tomb of the unknowns. no campaigning. trump did not make any speeches there, but there was also photos taken in a restricted area called area 60, where some of the 13 u.s. service members who were killed on that last day are buried. this picture taken by the governor of utah. a thumbs up with family members at the grave of marine taylor hoover from salt lake city. the trump campaign says it has written permission for a professional photographer to be in area 60, and that it had video proof the cemetery worker was at fault for trying to stop them. a despicable individual says trump
6:46 am
campaign spokesperson steven cheung. special counsel jack smith has revised the indictment against trump filed in washington, d.c, the one that covers trump's attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. no new charges. in fact, smith narrowed the indictment, adjusting for the recent supreme court decision that presidents have immunity for some acts. so i don't think that it's changing anything legally. i think it's clearly an effort to try to do more election interference from jack smith. he should be ashamed of himself. and it's one of the reasons why we have to win, because he should not be anywhere near power. all right. on a much lighter note, something that's been on my calendar for a while. it was ten years ago today. president obama startled the world by wearing a tan suit. obama's press secretary defended the decision, pointing out it was just a few days before labor day. historians point out ronald reagan wore brown suits all the time, but social media, which
6:47 am
was relatively new at the time, would not let it go. president obama even mentioned the moment years later, at the top of his very last press conference. good afternoon everybody. let me start off by saying that i was sorely tempted to wear a tan suit today for my last press conference. but michelle, whose fashion sense is a little better than mine, tells me that's not appropriate in january. now, the tan suit controversy is so memorable. a lot of people took notice when kamala harris showed up to the first night of the democratic national convention wearing this. now, our producer, justin says this is not tan, but i don't know. coincidence. throwback we know a lot of people noted this on social media, and harris's meme game is strong, but likely we'll never know. call it the audacity of hope. looking at the calendar, senator vance will speak this morning in erie, pennsylvania,
6:48 am
then head to wisconsin. governor walz will be in boston with firefighters there. vice president harris will be in savannah, georgia, and tomorrow harris and walz will sit down with cnn for an interview. marcus, thanks so much, scott. well, new at six for you. a new trend is giving people something to chew on. and it's mostly boys or young men. now, some influencers now claim that a new chewing gum can actually give you more of a defined jawline. several brands are circling tiktok, including jocko. this is a jawline gum claiming to give you more defined jaw in just weeks. yes, and it's being targeted for teenage boys for 12 to $25 a pack. that's a lot of money for a pack of gum. but the american dental association says the results actually range anywhere from ineffective to harmful. here is what one cosmetic dentist is telling today. show you can cause pain, headaches, neck pain. you can
6:49 am
break fillings. you can have your crowns fall out because you're chewing this hard gum. i'm sure you pay more 12 to $25 for those crowns. well, the parents do. so very true. so companies are claiming that the gum is up to ten times harder than normal gum, because it is made with hard resin or wax. so critics point out that most influencers promoting the gum are also probably already receiving commission for those sales. and they probably already have the jawline, just in case you didn't know. or you can watch the full interview on the today show. it's coming up for you at 7:00 this morning, right after us here on today in the bay and it's not just the gum, you know, you buy the normal gum in the store. it's that different gum. it's really, really hard to $25. i told my son we were doing that story and he's like, oh, are you talking about mewing? do you know what that is? no, it's when you put your tongue at the top of the
6:50 am
roof of your mouth and it helps you to get that jawline, too. so it's like a thing right now, i guess. yeah. yeah. it makes it tough to talk, though. all right. let's talk about this happening tonight. two titanic groups from the 80s. they will actually take the stage over at oracle park. here's a taste of what fans will be seeing. it's crazy, i know, but this guitar, it saved my life. there you go. video from def leppard's behind the summer stadium tour. bay area's own journey. also performing with the steve miller band. opening. tickets start at under $100, and you can still get some floor seats for under $500. the giants are offering a promotional deal, which includes base a well. really? wow. yep. got you covered. tonight's show gets underway early as well. 6:00? yeah, that should be a good one. that's nice. right? kind of wanted them to play pyromania. yeah. oh, yeah. well, we'll look it up next time. thank you. look at this sunrise. that is beautiful. wow. look, you're the golden child. nice. oh, yeah.
6:51 am
wow. the chosen one. we love it from our air conditioning studio. that is key. let's take a live look outside at another gorgeous sunrise. as we are taking a look at the tri valley, checking out dublin. bright orange as you're getting up and heading out in the sun. just about to come over the hills. there but look at this view in san francisco at the golden gate bridge where we can barely see anything. so we are seeing some of our microclimates playing a role in the kind of weather we'll experience today. fog near the coast. sunshine away from that fog. and we're going to see temperatures still pretty warm even for this time of year. 92 in morgan hill. we'll see a high of 88 in milpitas. and for much of the east bay, 90 once again, 96 in concord and walnut creek in hayward today, 86. and near the coast, we're in the low 70s. this is where that fog lingers a little bit longer. but then in san mateo, where it's going to be nice and sunny, we'll see
6:52 am
highs in the mid 80s in san francisco, anywhere from 67 in the outer sunset to 77 downtown and in the north bay. it will be as hot as 102 degrees in ukiah. sonoma will see a high of 92. we've seen high pressure controlling our weather as we get into the weekend. we're going to see this low developing off the coast, and that's going to move into the pacific northwest. and with this counterclockwise wind flow that's going to help enhance that sea breeze, bring back more of the fog that will stay a lot longer near the coastline and help cool down our temperatures. but if you will be traveling farther north, heads up that you may run into some rain. we're going to see in spots like napa. temperatures going from mid 90s to mid 80s for the weekend looks really nice for our labor day weekend, but then next week, as soon as we're heading back to work, those temperatures ramp up once again. we'll be in the upper 90s for the middle of next week, so we only get a brief break from the heat and we're going to see some more
6:53 am
seasonable temperatures for saturday, sunday into labor day, and then hot once again early next week. we won't see as much of a drastic change in san francisco. we're keeping it pretty steady here with upper seconds and low 70s. mike, you're seeing it jammed now on the san mateo bridge. yeah, we expect this, but i just wanted to show you. actually, a couple of minutes ago, it was almost a full stop. so maybe someone hit their brakes a little too hard, and that rippled back across west 92. it's not that bad as far as the sensors go. pretty typical patterns for much of the bay, but we don't expect this. we usually have slowing out of contra costa county and down toward alameda county for the build off of that area, but now we have it going the opposite direction. there's a crash early that happened approaching 584 northbound 680. and so there are three right lanes that are blocked for inspection of a sign overhead. we now see the build really pretty strong out of sunol. back to you. thank you very much, mike. it is 653 and happening now. today is the final day of operations for the hilton hotel near the oakland airport. it's just one of several closures in the area.
6:54 am
the hotel is on hegenberger road between the oakland airport and 80. representatives say the hospitality business has taken a hit since the pandemic, but it didn't give a specific reason for the closure. we're back in minutes with a look at our top stories. this morning, including violence at some bay area schools. the latest case, a violent lunchtime stabbing in the east bay. now the new calls this morning for increased security. but first, here's craig melvin. coming up on today, an inside look at the labor day travel rush. the crowds on the roads and at the airports expected to shatter records. we'll have everything you need to know before you go on. a top tsa official joins us live. and of course, al's got a first look at t

i'll say what city hall insiders won't. we have a drug, homelessness, and economic recovery crisis, because the system that's supposed to fix things is the problem. record budgets. fewer officers. business killing bureaucracy. the insiders won't change a system built for their benefit. i'm daniel lurie and san francisco needs a mayor unafraid to take on the status quo, bring accountability, and stop the excuses.

with a look at our top stories here on today in the bay, including the start of a high profile criminal trial in oakland. it involves three men accused in the deadly shooting of an oakland police officer, john lay. he died in late december after responding to a burglary call at a cannabis dispensary. those three defendants are charged with murder. a fourth defendant is facing three counts of second degree burglary. the trial is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. a live look for you this morning at hayward high school. this is where security is beefed up this week after a lunchtime stabbing. the confrontation happened on monday, police saying that three students were arguing when one of them pulled a knife and stabbing. the other two both went to the hospital. they are expected to be okay. so far, no arrests. meanwhile, police are providing new details about a violent attack last friday in the locker room at dublin high school. a 15 year old student

was assaulted after first being confronted by a parent. investigators say that that parent and four teenagers in hoodies then followed that student into the boy's locker room. that's when the teens assaulted him and then took off. so far, there's no word about possible charges, but the victim is expected to recover. how about some uplifting news that could inspire anyone, not just a live look in paris, but a short time from now, the paralympics get underway. the games have already set a record for the most tickets sold. 4500 athletes are set to compete across 22 sports over 11 days. you can keep up with all the action on peacock. the opening ceremony streams this morning live at 10 a.m. all right. and weather wise, here, another warm one for us. yes. and the inland valleys. we're heading back to the 90s. mid 90s. pretty widespread for today parts of the east bay, the south county. and then tomorrow in the low 90s. now into the weekend, it looks pretty nice with mid 80s in the inland area.
7:00 am
and then for san francisco we're seeing mostly upper 60s and low 70s. that extends at least into the middle of next week. and surprise slowing for folks in the tri valley continuing northbound 680 jammed up from bernal up to 580. there's damage to an overhead sign just shy of the 580 overcrossing crews are trying to determine whether or not they can reopen lanes that go under that sign today show just moments away, but for more local news, stay with today in the bay. we stream live on pluto, roku and other platforms live at. live at 8:00 this morning. counting down to kickoff. san jose state's assistant athletic director joins us as the spartans prepare for their first football game tomorrow night. go, spartans! here we go. thanks for joining us. this good wednesday morn. millions more are waking up to another day of extreme ht
