southbound 880. this will slow your commute a little bit, as we're looking at a crash just around the industrial parkway offramp. a couple of cars got into it. so what we know right now is there is some debris that they're trying to work out on the lanes. not too much of an impact, but again, just be careful and give everybody their space. there down into the south bay off of 82. we'll go to san jose, seventh street and leo avenue before you get on tully road. that will you'll have to watch for a crash there. otherwise the rest of the bay area is looking good. we're looking about a 25 minute ride out of the altamont pass, and the bridges are also flowing smoothly. back to you. thank you very much, cynthia. well, crews are still working this morning to fully contain a brush fire in the north bay. it is burning near petaluma on old adobe road in taurasi lane. cal fire says the gulch fire has scorched 20 acres since it started yesterday afternoon. about three outbuildings and one other structure now destroyed. at last check, the fire is 40% contained, so far. there is no

states today in the bay's alice barr joining us live from washington this morning. and alice, there really is a lot to track here. there is marcus as usual. but today i think the biggest headline is this sit down interview that vice president harris is going to be giving. there's a lot of focus on that because she has been under mounting pressure to stake out her policy positions from both supporters and critics to say where she stands on key policy issues. have a good evening, everyone. vice president kamala harris and running mate minnesota governor tim walz, kicking off a bus tour across southern georgia, listening to a high school marching band. and addressing the students. your generation. all that you guys stand for. everything you have at stake is what is going to propel our country. governor walz, drawing on his time as a high school teacher and football coach.

5:11 am
as we go throughout the rest of the day, we'll see those temperatures rising and it will be another warm one, just not as warm as it has been. we'll see a high of 84. and in the south bay as you move farther south, you are going to see some upper 80s there, only a couple of low 90s for the far inland areas before the north bay. it will be milder, with a high of 88. today in napa. we'll get a look ahead to the weekend. coming up, cynthia has a look at where you can fill up for less before you hit the road this weekend. yeah, you're talking about not as hot. hopefully we can find not as expensive for these gas prices. good morning kari. good morning everyone. it's almost time for our getaway friday. thursday is also mini friday, so let's see where we can find some of those cheaper gas prices for you. we want to avoid the crowds tomorrow. of course, as people try to get away. we'll check in right now on the prices reported by you on gasbuddy.com. thanks for helping us out and we'll start with 375 in san jose at the costco off of east capitol expressway. do some shopping, then fill up the tank. we'll

the search giant of hijacking traffic at the top of search results. now, yelp has been accusing google of this for years, but this new suit comes right after google lost an antitrust case brought by the government. and yelp smells an opportunity. a lot of news about social media, a real sea change. all of a sudden, courts are holding the social media platforms responsible for what users post. that's really never happened before. we start with the tragic loss of a ten year old who tried one of those tiktok challenges. here's her mother. just pay attention because you never know what you might find in their phones or the things they find that you think ten year olds wouldn't tr. they're trying because they're kids and they don't know no better. now, a federal appeals court in pennsylvania has revived the mother's wrongful death lawsuit against tiktok, saying tiktok must stand trial for the death of ten year old
5:18 am
nyla anderson, who tried to copy one of those challenges in her feeds. it's one of several incidents this week of courts holding the platforms at least partially responsible for what users post, and that's not how it worked in the past. in the past, social networks were immune from those kinds of accusations, the same way the post office is not responsible for the nasty letter you send, or the phone company is not responsible for, say, you, planning a crime over the phone. social media companies have been using that for decades to try to say, we're not responsible for what's on our platform. we may profit off of it, but we're not responsible for it in any way. and what the court yesterday said is that's just not true. x the old twitter, also famously facing similar problems in brazil x had removed essentially evacuated executives working in brazil after a court there said
5:19 am
those executives could be jailed for what users said on x. and now the brazilian supreme court ordering x to send the executives back to brazil, or the court may shut down x throughout the country. we've reached out to x for more comment. not just x either, not just tiktok. we told you about the rest of the head of telegram in france, again accused of various crimes based on what users posted, not what he poste. pavel durov, now officially charged, among other things, with allowing child sexual abuse and drug trafficking on the social network telegram used by political activists who are trying to avoid censorship of their country's leaders as well. also how the ukrainian army sends out those videos of its battlefield victories. i'm not saying that social media has, you know, i mean, they've done some some pretty tough stuff here. i just need you to understand this is a giant sea change in the way that various courts around the of the world are seeing how this works, seeing the effects of it. yeah.
5:20 am
thank you, scott 519 for you, this morning and new for you state lawmakers. they have approved a measure meant to end preferential treatment for legacy applicants at all colleges and universities statewide. a bay area assemblyman, phil ting, authored that measure. he argues prioritizing students whose families are alumni or significant donors leads to a less racially diverse student body. california public schools already forbid the practice, but that measure applies to private schools as well. that bill now heads to the governor's desk. new research says catching up on sleep on the weekends may come with added health benefits. in fact, sleeping in on the weekends may significantly decrease the risk of heart disease. research by european society of cardiology congress in london found people who got the most sleep on the weekend were 19% less likely to develop heart disease. a recent gallup poll found only 42% of u.s. adults get as much sleep as they need, but it's nice to see this study because usually the studies all show that we're, you
5:21 am
know, we're in bad shape on this shift, but maybe that sleeping in we do could help us. i do, i take advantage of it. it's a luxury not to have to have an alarm. that's what we're talking about. yeah. that's right. all right. sleeping in all the way past 6 a.m. yes. and people may have an extra day this weekend with it being labor day to sleep in. so take advantage and don't feel bad about it. we're going to start out with temperatures this morning in the upper 50s. as you're heading out in san francisco, it is 63. in hayward. we've had some really warm days and it's been slow to recover with those temperatures dropping overnight, but it is feeling nice and mild with some mid 50s in parts of the east bay. looking at our highs for this afternoon, it will be 87 in cupertino. so you can see these numbers are still pretty warm, but just not a lot of 90s here. we're still very close. 89 in morgan hill today and 90 in concord. and walnut creek. the warmest temperature will be in antioch today, 92 degrees with a lot of upper seconds and low 80s
5:22 am
for the inner east bay. and then for the peninsula. anywhere from 69 in daly city to 84, in redwood city. in san francisco, it will be in the low seconds downtown and in the mission district, mostly 60s through the afternoon, as that fog lingers a little bit longer and we'll see some mid 80s for much of the north bay with santa rosa at a high of 85 degrees and 96. in clear lake. looking ahead to the next few days, we've been talking a lot about a little bit of a cool down and we're going to be in the 90s here. one of our warmer spots inland like brentwood. and then look at next week, the summer heat will be blasting back with triple digit temperatures starting on tuesday. and continuing through midweek. a lot of our inland valleys will be in the upper 90s, so we're going to enjoy those mid 80s that we will see for the weekend into labor day. while san francisco will stay in the low 70s. and, cynthia, you're tracking an issue in hayward. yep. still this ongoing

problem. southbound 880 after industrial right there after the southland mall around the industrial parkway offramp. there were a couple of cars that got into the crash, debris in the lanes. so they're starting to clear that. but we are looking at backing up right after you pass the southland mall. just give crews and everybody a chance to get that situated out of the way. the rest of the bay area is looking fine. we hope it stays that way and we'll be back with a look at traffic in a few minutes. back to you. all right. thanks, cynthia. going for gold next on today in the bay. a soaring start to the paralympics in paris. we'll have the highlights from the opening ceremony and all the action to watch for as

find a better deal. you should go for it right now at 530. one of california's largest home insurers gets the green light for the biggest rate hike in years. we're live this morning with a look at which neighborhoods are likely to get hit the hardest. getting you ready for your holiday travel. labor day rush is heating up from crowded airports to busy roadways. we've got you covered with everything you need to know. this is today in the bay. here we go. thursday morning, 530. thanks for starting your day with us. with this. just like, let's get it going. okay. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. let's get over to meteorologist kari hall with a look at that forecast. and you know what? we could do that dance today because temperatures are going to be just a little bit cooler, a little bit cooler today. and we're still seeing
5:32 am
some spots in the inland valleys that will be still warm. so we are going to see a slight drop in temperatures as we take a live look outside in san francisco. we are going to see those low clouds. let's head to the north bay where the fog lingers a lot longer in tiburon. that keeps those temperatures in the upper 60s, but it will be up to 90. in yountville today. benicia 80 for that high and mid 80s for santa rosa and in novato and cynthia, it looks pretty busy in the east bay right now. we can see it right now. oakland 80 in both directions. cars are moving. but if people are coming south, that's what we're going to encounter. a problem right there in hayward. you travel a little bit further south. we're looking at southbound 880 at the industrial park offramp. there was a crash involving about 3 or 4 cars. then the debris got in the lane. and right now is my last check of the chp log. i saw that there was another crash building up right behind this. so everybody just eyes on the road and make sure that you just give space to the crews that are trying to handle this. back to

you guys. thanks, cynthia. well matt king in the bay coming with another added challenge for homeowners. the state is giving the green light for a major rate hike by another home insurer. today, in the bay's bob redell joining us live from livermore this morning. and, bob, we're actually talking about all the state here. how much of an increase can customers expect? okay, bob, you know what? we're having trouble with your microphone there. we can't hear you. we're going to try to get that worked out, but we are talking about allstate insurance this morning. we'll check back with you in just a little bit. all right. well new for you this morning. new funding in the south bay. it's going to actually help boost living conditions for farm workers and unhoused veterans. congresswoman zoe lofgren yesterday announcing that she actually secured about $2.5 million in federal funds. some of that money will help renovate recently acquired buildings meant to house vets. the rest will go to farmworker

housing infrastructure upgrades. this is to help meet building codes long covid, more specifically chronic fatigue symptom will be the focus of a special hearing today in the south bay, santa clara county supervisor simitian is hosting that hearing. he's also chair of the county's health and hospital committee. several south bay medical experts will be on hand to try to tackle the symptoms of long covid, including fatigue, dizziness and pain. all of it tied to the medical condition that is really keeping people down. the hearing takes place at 2:00 this afternoon at the county government center in san jose. new for you this morning. the labor day weekend travel rush is on, and we have live team coverage for you this morning. cinthia pimentel is, of course, tracking that impact on the commute. meteorologist kari hall is timing out that forecast for us. but first, let's check in with today in the bay's ginger conejero saab. she's live at sfo this morning. a lot of folks are going to be heading
5:35 am
their catching flights out of town. that's true. lucky them. right. good morning, laura and marcus. always nice to see that last summer getaway. as labor day really closes out the summer. we're live at sfo, as you mentioned. you can take a look behind us. there is a bit of a travel rush this morning. now, this is typically a busy time of the morning for those trying to get out early, but san francisco is the busiest airport in the area. it is expected to be the busiest airport during the labor day weekend and starting today through tuesday, the airport is expected to see more than 930,000 passengers pass through. that's almost 9% higher than last year, so don't be surprised if sfo and san francisco itself feel and look busy this holiday weekend. according to triple a, san francisco is among the top local destinations this labor day weekend. it's joined by new york, boston, denver and chicago. domestic travel is up 9% compared to last year, with
5:36 am
travel costs down 2% now. europe is a top destination for upcoming holiday travel. eight of triple a's top ten international travel destinations are in europe. that includes paris, rome, barcelona and dublin. international travel over labor day weekend, however, is down 4% compared to last yea. labor day isn't as popular travel wise as july 4th or thanksgiving, but it's still an opportunity for people to get away, especially if they have that built in three day weekend. now, whether you are traveling domestically or internationally, don't forget those tsa rules because it might set you back a bit. getting onto your flight. tsa is expected to screen a record breaking 17 million passengers. now, bay area airports are bracing for the influx of travelers this weekend. oakland's airport, the san francisco oakland international airport, estimates that 200,000 passengers will visit the airport from today
5:37 am
until tuesday, september 3rd. the busiest travel days for them will be tomorrow and monday. tomorrow also expected to be the busiest travel day down in san jose at mineta airport, both san jose and oakland advise their travelers to plan for your parking ahead of time. that's a nice little tip there. if you do plan on taking your car or driving to your travel destination this labor day weekend, today and tomorrow will be the busiest days on the road. triple a advises drivers to leave past 11 a.m. that makes just enough time for you to watch today in the bay. then you can head out the door. hopefully with the easier traffic. guys, back to you. that's how they should spend the day. start out with today in the bay because that kicks off every vacation in a great way, because you've got to know about the airport delays and the weather, for example. right, kari. absolutely. and that's so important, especially this early in the morning. we look at our east coast airports and if there's any issues there, it kind of causes the ripple effect across the country. and
5:38 am
there's no major storms that we are seeing. it's just been really hot. so that's been the main issue. but looking here close to home, no airport delays as of yet. we'll continue to monitor that. let's find some things to do around the bay area. we are going to have the sacramento state and san jose state game. that's going to show some really nice temperatures for that. and then we have monday night football. so if you're staying here you'll be able to maybe check that out. we have temperatures that will start out in the low 70s and then down into the mid 60s as the night goes on. if you're heading up to napa for the black radio experience, it's going to be really nice at the meritage resort. it's going to be in the mid 80s for tomorrow and it will be warm during the middle of the day, but make sure you have the jacket for when those temperatures cool down quickly late in the evening. there's also the kings mountain art fair and the redwoods. it's going to be really comfortable there with highs in the mid 70s. cynthia is tracking the roads and some of those destinations you may be
5:39 am
headed to. of course, we know that the roads up to tahoe and around the lakes here in the bay area are going to be busy. and i would also offer you this. maybe it's time for a little bit of a check on your car. it's been the summer. we've kind of let it give it a little bit of a lull. so just make sure that that is ready to go. there are some events here locally if you're staying in town with me and the rest of us, it's not too bad. giants and marlins friday at oracle 7.15. so just some local traffic getting off of 280 and 101. and on saturday we have peso pluma the biggest mexican artist going on right now. that will be saturday at 830 in the afternoon. bart will also be running a sunday schedule on labor day, so just check for that if that is your way to work on monday in the bay area. back to you guys. thanks, cynthia. well, as we've been reporting, the state is giving the green light for a major rate hike by another home insurer today in the bay's bob redell joining us live from livermore this morning. and bob, we're talking about all of the state here. and it's already tough for people to
5:40 am
make it in the bay. so how much of an increase can customers expect here? good morning, marcus and laura. we're talking about allstate. of course. that's one of the state's largest home insurers. and they are going to be increasing the rates for homeowners insurance on average by 34%. so if you are a customer of allstate, this is something that you would notice. the exact amount on your next renewal. notice again, that was the average the california department of insurance gave allstate, which is, by the way, the state's sixth largest home insurer. the green light for this rate hike for more than 350,000 policyholders here in the golden state, this is the largest rate hike in three years by a major insurance carrier. here again, that 34% is the average. some could see a lesser increase, others could see more. it depends on where you live. homeowners in areas of high fire risk, for example, like rural parts here in the east bay, the hills of santa clara county, and of course parts of napa and sonoma, they could see the largest hikes. state farm also

accompanied donald trump on that photo shoot at arlington national cemetery on monday, scott mcgrew. joining us right now and scott, governor spencer there. spencer cox that is said that they actually did. and it was supposed to be part of a campaign ad. yeah. well, the trump campaign continues to say this was not a campaign ad to remind you. on monday, trump and cox and some family members of at least two marines killed in the final days of the occupation of afghanistan, took photographs and video at the headstones of those marines at arlington national cemetery. here's one of those pictures a thumbs up from former president trump. now, governor cox is on the far right of this photograph. he's got his hands behind his back there. cox posted this picture to social media, and then they took over that disaster. the leaving of afghanistan. and then the trump campaign went on and made a video for tiktok. we now know from both the trump campaign and the cemetery, a u.s. official

tried to step in and stop the photography at the site. this is called area 60. it's against federal law and cemetery rules. now, the trump campaign insists it had permission to shoot the pictures and the video, and that they were there by the invitation of the families to be at the gravesite. now, the problem is the family cannot give permission to someone to violate the cemetery rules over photography and behavior. in a statement posted below the picture he posted. governor cox said of the picture, quote, this was not a campaign event never intended to be used by the campaign. it didn't go through the proper channels and should not have been sent. my campaign will be sending out an apology. now the incident is evocative of the situation. joint chiefs of staff mark milley found himself in when he was asked to go in full battle camo to accompany then president trump on a walk across lafayette square, and that turned into a photo op milli or milli rather later

apologized to his fellow members of the military. i should not have been there. my presence in that moment and in that environment created a perception of the military involved in domestic politics as a commissioned, uniformed officer. it was a mistake. now, trump did not campaign yesterday, but his running mate jd vance stumped in both pennsylvania and wisconsin, where he was asked about the confrontation between the campaign staffers and the cemetery official. three years ago. 13 brave, innocent americans died and they died because kamala harris refused to do her job. and there hasn't been a single investigation or a single firing. now that's worth a fact check. there is an ongoing investigation into the failures around the bombing at abbey gate, though general mark milley, the same general mark milley acknowledges it's taking too long. and vice presidents hold no military authority whatsoever. they can no more

give a command to a general than you or i can. harris and her running mate, governor tim walz, will be interviewed on cnn tonight at 6:00. our time. this will be harris's first sit down interview since she became the democratic nominee for president. and the supreme court has blocked president biden's revised plan to forgive some student loans. the save plan is essentially dead, though. for now, until there's a final, final decision. interest on those loans are still on hold. but if the courts agree with the republican states attorneys general who want to block the forgiveness, that interest will kick back in and your student loan payments will go up. laura, thank you very much, scott. well, new this morning, in some cases, good grades, only half the battle for children now headed back to school. because when it comes to picky eaters, the other half of the battle may be staying nourished. experts suggest a number of strategies for parents. for example, pick a lunchbox, maybe depicting your child's favorite character gets them a little excited to have

that lunch or have your kids practice eating. the amount of time that they'll have at school. sometimes they want to play more and go grocery shopping together for school lunch items, or let them pack their own meal, but look over it to make sure they put in healthy things. also, don't obsess over what your kids don't eat. here's one speech language pathologist who helps children with feeding and swallowing disorders. think about when you ask your child to put their shoes on or pick up their toys, right? what do they do? they dig their heels in, so the more you pressure them to eat when it's hard for them, the less they're going to want to do it, and then it's going to make eating, a stressful relationship or they're not going to have a good relationship with food, so give them the freedom and the independence to try foods on their own, set them up for success and give them opportunities to do so. but don't pressure them. that's true. you've got to put the control with them. well concerned parents always advise to talk with their pediatrician, but the american speech language hearing association also links to professionals who can help.
