breezy out there as you're driving to work, and our temperatures in dublin at 8:00 will still be in the upper 50s. and then as we go throughout the day, we'll head for the mid 70s at noon and then some low 80s for the afternoon. pretty nice right? we're going to be up to 80 for a high today in san jose, 85 in martinez and for much of the north bay. we'll see those temperatures in the low to mid 80s and still very hot farther to the north. but we are going to be tracking that and some slightly cooler temperatures for the rest of the weekend. coming up, cynthia is in this morning tracking a crash in the east bay. yeah, we go over to hayward. it was super popular yesterday again this morning, but it's the counter commute direction. northbound 880 right there around the tennyson road off ramp. the details that i know right now is that it was an suv versus a truck that was carrying a lot of water, so that could be a little slippery. as we take a look at that situation, i'm going to step aside here, show you the rest of the bay area. the south bay looking good. coming up 101 or

highway 17. and we'll watch the build across the bay bridge on this watch. hopefully. should be friday light. ladies thanks a lot, cynthia. new overnight. one person is dead after a crash involving two vehicles on interstate 580 near the oakland zoo. now it happened late last night in the westbound lanes by the 106th avenue offramp. three lanes of traffic were closed during the overnight hours. chp is not saying how many other victims there are or the nature of their injuries. we are learning new details on a fiery chain reaction crash in the north bay. cardinal newman high school confirms pat lafortune, who taught at the school for nearly 50 years, was killed in the crash near santa rosa. it happened just before noon yesterday on highway 12 near fulton road. the chp says 11 cars were stopped at a red light when a dump truck filled with sand slammed into them. the impact caused a pickup truck to burst into flames, killing mr.

lafortune. nine other people were taken to the hospital. the race for the white house is heating up, with just 66 days to go until the election. the second gentleman, doug emhoff, is campaigning for his wife, kamala harris, and her running mate tim walz. he will be in the bay area today at a fundraiser in san francisco. tickets for that start at $25,000. there's no word yet on where this event is being held. now, this comes after harris and walz had their first sit down interview. that's right. they discussed their policy platform from jobs to the economy to even affordable housing and immigration. former president donald trump pushing back while campaigning across midwest states today in the bay's alice barr, joins us live from washington this morning. she's got more from both sides. good morning alice. good morning laura and ginger. this interview came amid mounting pressure on vice president harris to show how she performs in unscripted, uncontrolled environments and to

more clearly lay out her policy positions. in her first sitdown interview since becoming the democratic nominee, vice president harris staking out her day one priorities if elected president. implementing my plan for what i call an opportunity economy. touching on addressing price gouging on groceries a $6,000 child tax credit for new babies, and a $25,000 tax credit for first time home buyers sitting alongside her running mate, minnesota governor tim walz, the vice president also defending her shifting policy positions since her 2019 run for the white house, including calling them to decriminalize migration, now saying there should be consequences for crossing the border illegally. we have laws that have to be followed and enforced. i spent two terms as the attorney general of california prosecuting transnational criminal organizations. noting she still believes in climate change action but would not ban fracking, all while making the

argument my values have not changed. former president trump, seizing on that answer, saying her values are too far to the left as he shifts position on reproductive rights. the former president at a wisconsin town hall announcing a new proposal for ivf, the government is going to pay for it, or we're going to get or mandate your insurance company to pay for it. vice president harris also brushed off the former president's comments, questioning her black identity. same old, tired playbook. next question please. and said she would appoint a republican to her cabinet. former president trump has been criticizing vice president harris for not having implemented these policies that she's talking about. now during the past three and a half years as vice president under the biden administration. and while she defended their record together, she said there is more work to do. lauren ginger. thanks a lot, alice. it is 506 right now. bay area full of

brand new start ups with workers whose linkedin include a dozen jobs or more. but our scott mcgrew found one silicon valley company that's been in the same place, making the same things with the same people for decade. that'll do it. that is a phalanx weapon system undergoing tests on board the uss george h.w. bush. passing those tests. because inside are the parts natalie and scott and canuto carefully manufactured at quality transformer and electronics in milpitas. here they make power supplies for the phalanx and for water systems and commercial ovens, you name it. and they've done it since the ceo's grandfather made the first components 60 years ago. inside his grandmother's pressure cooker. this is a very critical piece of the

manufacturing process, as are the people, many of whom have been here for decades. i wear a lot of hats, well, i've been because i've been here so long. you know how long i've been here? almost 47 years. because all these, people here, all the managers here, all the owner, they've been, good to you. and then i work here. that's why maybe i stay here for a long time. i've been here 25 years. you know, much like kitchen workers call each other chef out of respect. the boss calls each one of these people engineer. not just the degreed workers like natalie. two. everybody. everyone. an engineer. i believe that they are. you know, degreed engineers. no, but i have to say, i'm very proud of those people out there because they are skilled laborers. they're not just laborers. they they know their craft. so congratulations to quality transformer and electronics. very happy labor day weekend to everyone there. one last story.

including lax, chicago's o'hare and houston. what about the forecast here? if you're staying in town, should be nice. kari. yes, it will be a nice day. we're starting out this morning. upper 50s. if you're about to head to the airport or getting on the road, or just going to work in danville, it is 55. definitely jacket weather for much of the bay area as we're waking up to cooler temperatures, and as we take a look at our highs, we're headed for the low 80s here. but compare that to what we're seeing elsewhere across the country. a pretty strong cold front moving through parts of the midwest, and that's going to break those extreme temperatures that they've had recently. but out ahead of that in parts of the southeast, it's still going to be hot. as they're looking at highs in the 90s. even chicago is pretty hot today. but we are going to see temperatures here at home feeling nice and mild with us. mostly seconds and 80s, but we will still see a few low 90s farther inland. and cynthia says that even though it is a busy travel day, as of right now, it looks pretty light,

making huge amounts of money making chips for ai. so both investments make sense. we'll get fresh inflation data today. that's pce. the report that the fed prefers to look at the fed meets to discuss lowering interest rates next month. donald trump said on social media he would announce new cryptocurrency policies on thursday. he did not. trump spoke at two rallies, one in michigan, one in wisconsin. trump does sometimes say he's going to reveal something like a new nationwide health care plan. and then doesn't the conservative news agency the free beacon points out that kamala harris says she worked at mcdonald's as a kid, but didn't put it on her resume after she graduated college, nor did she add mcdonald's to her list of past jobs for her application as district attorney or assistant district attorney in alameda county. now, this report has caused some derision online. people you know, naming their

francisco skyline on this friday morning. well, it looks that to me looks pretty clear, kari. but it looks like it's shaping up to be a beautiful day in the city. it's going to be a really nice day. nice weekend. and i don't know if we can ask for anything better for labor day weekend, because sometimes this time of year, especially with all of the outdoor events, it can get pretty hot out there. now we're starting to see our temperatures coming down, so we'll be in the upper seconds for a high today in hayward and 89 degrees in concord in livermore, 86 degrees. so you can see some spots are still hot with some low 90s like fairfield, up to 92 degrees today. 96 in ukiah, much of the north bay with some low to mid 80s and low 70s for san francisco into the day tomorrow. it's about the same, although we may see a few of our inland valleys going up a degree or two and then back down on sunday with some slight cooling, some gusty winds, and it's going to be a really comfortable day outside. we do have high pressure that's across the

but out for good reasons. because you know what's coming up? clearing the shelters in just a week. the whole team will be over at berkeley humane, where they've got the big bark along the park event. it's a chance for you to maybe bring home a furry friend to your family. joining me this morning is emily murphy. she's with berkeley humane and with you today, i understand this is laura garcia. yeah. this is laura garcia, your namesake. yeah. no kidding. so they always name some of these animals after, you know, us on air types at nbc bay area. so this is kind of a german shepherd mix. yeah. her mother was a german shepherd. she's probably about eight weeks old, her brother is marcus washington. so she left her brother this morning to come down here. but that's perfect. so marcus and i will be out at berkeley humane. i mentioned it's on saturday, september 7th and talk about the event. we've done it year after year, so we're familiar with it. but it's so great for the community to

come out whether you're adopting or not. yeah. parker on the block is a great event. on september 7th from 10 to 4. we invite about 20 different rescues from all over the state. they bring our adoptable animals to berkeley humane. so we'll have, you know, over 200 animals available for adoption that day. berkeley humane we will waive or will fee waived adoptions that day, which is fantastic for people in the community. we'll probably have about 85 animals on hand for adoption. so it's just a fantastic day. full of adoptions literally every two minutes. yeah, it is. it is amazing to see. and people come out early. we'll be doing the morning show there live in the morning, but then you can come out to the avenue there with your friends and families. and this is what you have a lot of participating adoption agencies as well that bring cats, kittens, the work. yeah, we do. and, you know, it's also like street fair. yeah, we're going to have food trucks. there'll be live music. we'll have a little beer garden. there'll be some activities for the kids, often we have people who've adopted at barker on the block actually come to the event just as

alumni. oh that's nice. exactly. come be part of the team. all right, so this is something that, you see, i call this the kitten mobile. but you do not. it's our mobile adoption center. but kitten mobile is appropriate for this morning. mobile adoption center. it's much more official. but the thing is, is that the kitten mobile is out there. so if you get a chance, you can come and walk and look at all the little kittens and let me tell you, they have pretty much every different variety of color or eye color or anything that you could want out there. yeah, we actually brought in 30 kittens on monday. wow. no kidding. they'll all be available at mekahlo medina on the block. and i feel like kitten season is almost turning a little year round. or at least i know it's big in the in the spring and the summer. it is. it's actually going through november and it really depends on the weather. like kitten season now can last all the way through the holidays. wow. but park around the block is a great time to adopt a kitten. i mean, you'll have many to choose from. yeah, you really, really will. and if you get in line, you have a chance to actually go into the mobile little kitten center here

also no trouble to report of there. the bay bridge right around now should be the time that the metering lights come on, but just a few cars making their way to the toll plaza. so hopefully it stays this way. back to you. thanks a lot cynthia. a final farewell today for a san jose police community service officer who died while doing traffic control at the scene of an accident. long pham died august 3rd when he was struck by a car whose driver police say was under the influence. his funeral is scheduled for 11:00 this morning at sap center, and it will be followed by a flyover and a procession. it is open to the public. lawmakers are up against the clock in sacramento. tomorrow is the final day to approve new legislation in the current session. today in the bay's thom jensen is in our newsroom. and tom, there are still some important bills there hanging in the balance. good morning. yeah, we're talking about laws that would address everything from implementing new ai safety and security measures to legalizing cannabis cafes in

california, like in amsterdam or here in the u.s. and portland, oregon. the legislature has already passed a bill on the cannabis cafes, and it's awaiting a thumbs up or down from governor newsom. the governor is expected to sign another measure that passed both the house and the senate, one that limits cell phone use by students in public schools. he said. every classroom should be a place of focus, learning and growth free from cell phones. some bills that are still awaiting the senate or house votes one would further limit self-checkout stations and require staffing at those stations, and grocery stores of one employee per two stations. that still faces a final vote. another bill would attempt to hold social media companies accountable for harms that their algorithms and technology cause children is also being debated in sacramento and facing final votes. the legislature approved a comprehensive artificial intelligence bill authored by senator scott wiener. it adds protections for the public from cyber attacks and prohibits its

use for developing chemical, nuclear, biological weapons and a bill that would also allow undocumented immigrants to qualify for state backed mortgage loans passed. but the governor has not signaled whether or not he'll veto that or make it law. a new driverless truck ban bill also passed the legislature. legislature and it's awaiting the governor's signature. but governor newsom vetoed a similar measure last year. the governor is expected to meet with the secretary of energy later this morning in oakland and launch the nation's first hydrogen hub there. we'll have a team there and hope to ask him more about what he plans to do with some of these bills that are on his desk. and governor newsom has until september 30th to sign those bills into law. lauren ginger, a lot to get done. thank you very much. tom. to decision 2024. kamala harris sat down for her first interview as the official democratic candidate for president last night on cnn, and scott mcgrew harris has a challenge here. she needs to be her own person, her own president. but she is still

working in the biden white house. right. which means she can't say anything bad about the biden white house, right? i mea, that would hurt her politically with democrats. also, many of her policies seem to be very similar to biden's. anyway now, that's not always the case. so we there's harris on the on the left two 2019. at the time, she was criticizing many of biden's policies, suggested a ban on fracking. but when biden picked her as vice president, she dropped that opposition. there. you see her modern day on the right. here's harris and walz last night talking with cnn's dana bash. no, and i made that clear on the debate stage in 2020 that i would not ban fracking as vice president. i did not ban fracking as president. i will not ban fracking a fracking ban might not be popular in pennsylvania, a state that both sides are looking to win. other notable moments last night, bash tried to ask her about race and identity politics. harris shut that down. move on, she said, and harris said she would nominate a republican to her presidential cabinet. i would, i

think, i think it's really important. i, i have spent my career inviting diversity of opinion. i think it's important to have people at the table when some of the most important decisions are being made that have different views, different experiences. and i think it would be to the benefit of the american public to have a member of my cabinet who was a republican. harris you see, was accompanied by tim walz, who didn't say very much. some criticized harris for not doing the interview alone, but this is not unusual. for instance, mitt romney sat with his running mate paul ryan for their first interview as official candidates for the republican party back in 2012. also, not that unusual to have a member of a different party in your presidential cabinet. norm mineta, a name familiar to anyone in san jose, a democrat, was the transportation secretary for republican george bush. the u.s. army confirms an official at

arlington national cemetery was shoved by someone in the trump entourage on monday as they tried to film in a restricted area. you're seeing some of that recording on tiktok here posted to donald trump's official account. trump told our dasha burns he did not know the rules about using arlington in a photo shoot. should your campaign have put out those videos and photos? well, we have a lot of people, you know, we have people, tiktok people, you know, we're leading the internet. but on that hallowed ground, should they have put out, i don't know what the rules and regulations are. i don't know who did it. and it could have been them. it could have been the parents. it could have been somebody. it was your campaign's tiktok that put out the i really don't know anything about it. all i do is i stood there and i said, if you'd like to have a picture, we can have a picture. now you heard trump say he's leading the internet. he's not leading in key states. according to a new bloomberg morning consult poll. those numbers favor harris, but because they're mostly within the margin of error, they're pretty much a jump ball. take a

look. harris is up by two points in georgia. three points in michigan, four points in nevada and pennsylvania, plus eight in wisconsin. a separate poll by the wall street journal looking nationally puts harris up 48% to 47%. again laura, well within the margin of error. exactly. all right. thank you very much. let's take a live look outside this friday morning. bay area roads will be packed with drivers this holiday weekend. no doubt, with today being the busiest. a little later in the morning. chp also launching a statewide maximum enforcement period that will end late monday night on labor day. fortunately, gas prices have been trending down. triple a says gas prices nationally, averaging. 336 $0.45 cheaper than this time last year. of course, bay area prices nowhere near that national average. a little bit higher. but still trending on the lower side, as well as people try to head out of town for the labor

will be here this weekend. makes it look so easy. maria montejo is one of the fellow castmates. how hard is this? i mean, i look at it, i know it's hard for me, but for you. well, now it's like, not hard anymore. like a more entertaining. but jonathan, you have over 30 years and experience. actually jonathan is the sixth generation of circus performer specializing on the high wire, as you can see. and so he has pretty much experienced. so it's second hand is what you're saying when it comes to the balance. what is the trick though when you're out there on the wire. the wire is, you know, looks like it's you maybe have an inch of space for your feet is like a half inch, half inch, half inch. so imagine, like always, i'm trying to explain to the people what we feel when we walk on the wire. imagine all the supporting you and your feet when you walk on the floor. now to have all the weight of your body, all the support in just that half inch cable wire. so like it's a little pretty different balance that you have to have. but like i said, so many years of yeah of

practice experience. and so that way we can be capable to do this. but 25ft in the air on the triangular highway over there as you and you can see. and that is if i haven't been to the and i want to talk about the revamp of the circus, i haven't been on the circus in years. i don't remember seeing a triangular high wire that is new. yeah actually, the first time ever. because when we know the ringling brothers is going to come up again on the road, the lopez family say we have to go bigger than ever, and we have to make something unique. so jonathan and his brother john redesigned what we can do something spectacular, and also for the new generation of people that are going to come to see the show. so they reimagine everything and they created the triangular highway. and there is an airbag, not a net, but there's an airbag. how often? i mean, do you need the airbag? not really, but just for all the audience that come to see us, they can be relaxed just in case we have it, but we don't need it. and as we look at the center ring here, this is different. this is the first time, by the

way, in eight years, that the ringling brothers circus is back here in the bay area the second time without animals and clowns. what? i see the video screens. what do you think is the big takeaway that people are going to notice that's different? well, actually the whole concept is brand new. we have the 360 environment. we have. like as you can see, the led video screen during the show and we have the that never seen before like experience face to face with the audience. and it's very interactive. the, the all the families are going to have a lot of interaction with the performers during the show, and actually they will be part of the show during the with the all led screen production. so it's pretty all different, all new. we are 75 performers from different 14 acts, right? we are actually it's over 50 acts from two hour show, 75 performers from different age nationalities and fun and fun fact i just wanted to show you how easy this is, because they did say it was

up to 80 degrees. and then looking at tomorrow, it's pretty much the same for many spots, but it will be slightly cooler on sunday and then warming up a degree or two on monday. high pressure still across the region, but this low coming in will give us some more of a breezy wind. and then going into next week, high pressure will have more of an influence on our weather. so if you are going to some of the outdoor events this weekend, it will still be very nice. and the redwoods we have the kings mountain art fair near woodside, so it's going to be in the upper 70s for saturday. sunday, 74 degrees and will bring it into monday with some upper 70s. and you may be wrapping up your labor day with some monday night football at levi's stadium. it's going to be really nice out there for this first game, and we're going to see those temperatures dropping back to the mid 60s. so looking at our 7-day forecast after a mild weekend, it will get hot next week. summer will come blasting back with upper 90s on tuesday and wednesday. and in
