highest priorities is to do what we can to support and strengthen the middle class. right now, at six, a tale of two interviews in the race for the white house, kamala harris sits down for her first major interview since becoming the democratic nominee. while donald trump talks one on one with nbc. we're live in washington with the big takeaways and celebrating a milestone anniversary. scott mcgrew shows us the history behind a silicon valley staple. bracing for crowds as we take a live look at sfo. it's going to be a busy day at airports across the country. we're breaking down what to expect if you are flying out. this is today in the bay it will be a busy weekend and it's a busy friday. good friday morning. i'm ginger conejero saab in for marcus washington and i'm laura garcia, but it is friday and we have some friday fun around here. we'll get to weather and traffic in just a moment, but check this out. we're helping to clear the
6:01 am
shelters on this friday morning at 625. hear more of what you can do to help. look at all the kittens that are up early this morning. good morning guys. yeah, no kidding. they're still. yeah they think it's feeding time. maybe it is. we've got kittens, we've got puppies. and it's all coming up at 625 this morning. and we've also got a look at the weather, traffic and weather. but we'll start with weather. all right. looks great for us as we head into our long holiday weekend. we've been talking about the dip in temperatures and we're starting out with some clouds this morning over san jose and the temperature now at 64 degrees. but you're heading out to 54. in danville, we're seeing a lot of mid 50s and a slightly cooler start to our friday compared to what we've seen over the past couple of days. that's because we are experiencing a slight cooldown a stronger sea breeze, and that will keep the temperatures for much of the coast and in the bay in the 70s. today in the north bay, it will be in the low to mid 80s. and then for the tri valley we're in the low to mid 80s as well. san
6:02 am
jose looking at a high of 80 degrees. there will still be some hot spots in the inland valley, so i'll be tracking that. we'll talk about a weekend coming up and cynthia tracking a crash in the north bay. yeah, this one is just off of 101 in larkspur, right around the sf fitness. if you're familiar with that area, it's on pfeiffer avenue. not too many details, but if you are making your way from larkspur on into 101 either north or southbound direction, just give some space to what's going on there. i'll check back on those details. the rest of the bay area is looking still pretty good. not too much coming out of the altamont pass, but i'll check on this right there through hayward and get back to you in a few minutes. back to you. sounds good. we'll check back with you. cynthia. well, new overnight. sadly, one person is dead after a crash involving two vehicles on interstate 580 near the oakland zoo. it happened late last night in the westbound lanes by the 106th avenue offramp. three lanes of traffic were closed during the overnight hours. the chp is not saying how many other victims are there or if there are. the
6:03 am
nature of their injuries. we are learning some new details on a fiery chain reaction crash in the north bay. cardinal newman high school confirms pat lafortune, who taught at the school for nearly 50 years, was killed in that crash near santa rosa. it happened just before noon yesterday on highway 12 near fulton road. the chp says 11 cars were stopped at a red light when a dump truck filled with sand slammed into them. the impact caused a pickup truck to burst into flames, killing mr. lafortune. nine other people were taken to the hospital. the race for the white house is heating up, with just 66 days to go until the election. the second gentleman, doug emhoff, is campaigning for his wife, kamala harris, and her running mate tim walz. mr. emhoff will be in the bay area today at a fundraiser in san francisco. tickets start at $25,000. there is no word yet on where this event is being held. now this
6:04 am
comes after harris and walz had their first sit down interview. they discussed their policy platform from jobs and the economy to affordable housing and immigration. former president donald trump is pushing back while campaigning across midwest states today in the bay's alice barr joins us live from washington. so much to keep up with. and you've got more from both sides. alice ginger and focusing on this interview right now because there was a lot riding on it. it came amid increasing pressure on vice president harris to show how she can perform in uncontrolled, unscripted environments and to more clearly lay out her policy positions. in her first sit down interview since becoming the democratic nominee. vice president harris staking out her day one priorities if elected president. implementing my plan for what i call an opportunity economy. touching on addressing price gouging on groceries a $6,000 child tax credit for new babies, and a $25,000 tax credit for

first time home buyers sitting alongside her running mate, minnesota governor tim walz. the vice president also defending her shifting policy positions since her 2019 run for the white house including calling then to decriminalize migration, now saying there should be consequences for crossing the border illegally. we have laws that have to be followed and enforced. i spent two terms as the attorney general of california prosecuting transnational criminal organizations. noting she still believes in climate change action but would not ban fracking, all while making the argument my values have not changed. former president trump, seizing on that answer, saying her values are too far to the left as he shifts position on reproductive rights. the former president at a wisconsin town hall announcing a new proposal for ivf, the government is going to pay for it, or we're going to get or mandate your insurance company to pay for it. vice
6:06 am
president harris also brushed off the former president's comments, questioning her black identity. same old, tired playbook. next question please. and said she would appoint a republican to her cabinet. former president trump has been criticizing vice president harris for not implementing these policies she's speaking about now. throughout the past three and a half years, when she's been with the biden administration. and while she defended their record together, she said there is more to do. back to you. so much more to watch out for. thank you. alice well, we know the bay area is full of brand new start ups all the time. workers whose linkedin include a dozen jobs or more. but our scott mcgrew found one silicon valley company that's been in the same place, making the same things with the same people for decades. that'll do it. that is a phalanx weapon system undergoing tests on board the uss george h.w. bush.
6:07 am
passing those tests. because inside are the parts natalie and scott and canuto carefully manufactured at quality transformer and electronics in milpitas. here they make power supplies for the phalanx and for water systems and commercial ovens, you name it. and they've done it since the ceo's grandfather made the first components 60 years ago. inside his grandmother's pressure cooker. this is a very critical piece of the manufacturing process, as are the people, many of whom have been here for decades. i wear a lot of hats, well, i've been because i've been here so long. you know how long i've been here? almost 47 years. because all these, people here, all the managers here, all the owner, they've been, good to you. and then i work here. that's why maybe i stay here for a long time. i've been here 25
6:08 am
years. you know, much like kitchen workers call each other chef. out of respect. the boss calls each one of these people engineer. not just the degreed workers like natalie. to everybody. everyone. an engineer. i believe that they are. you know, degreed engineers. no, but i have to say, i'm very proud of those people out there because they are skilled laborers. they're not just laborers. they they know their craft. so congratulations to quality transformer and electronics. very happy labor day weekend to everyone who works there. one last story. you saw natalie. two. she was the one working on the computer blueprints. well, she came to the company with no experience and not enough english to explain to the bosses. she had a degree in drafting, so they put her on the factory floor wrapping wire. she learned english by watching episodes of friends after work. she tells me until she could tell the boss. hey, did you know i'm an engineer? i love it, i love it. that's a great story.
6:09 am
thanks so much, scott. you bet. well, now to a live look at sfo where the travel rush is in full effect ahead of labor day this year. air travel nationally is actually up about 10% over the holiday weekend. if you are flying united into or out of sfo today, you may see some picketers, the airline's aviation technicians union is calling today a teamsters day of action. similar protests are being organized at nine other u.s. airports, including lax, chicago's o'hare and houston. today. nationally will be the busiest of the weekend for departures monday. understandably, the busiest for returns. so. meteorologist kari hall has a look at how the airports are looking this morning. yeah, we've been watching a couple of spots, so we have a lot of storms from new orleans over toward houston and then there's also a cold front that's bringing a line of showers from chicago all the way down to houston or to dallas. so we are going to be tracking that cold front and the airport delays that are so far only
6:10 am
seeing about 30 minute delays in chicago. but elsewhere, things are looking pretty good. so our temperatures across the country, it's been pretty hot. but we do have once again that cold front bringing some more comfortable temperatures for parts of the upper midwest. it's still really hot in the south with 90s. and when you factor in the heat index, it's been over 100 degrees. so pack accordingly depending on where you're going. now we're going to see temperatures here vary from 60s near the coast to some low to mid 90s for the inland valleys. but most of the bay area in the 70s and 80s for this afternoon. and cynthia also giving us a look ahead to the holiday weekend long holiday weekend and fall sports are back. how about we go over to stanford this afternoon? they're taking on the texas christian university. 730 at stanford stadium, so you can expect some traffic right there on embarcadero road or el camin, as we do. go on and cheer on stanford as we go on and take a look at more bay area sports. how about going to a friday
6:11 am
night game? giants and marlins at oracle. expect some traffic as people get off of 101 280, or as people try to get away onto the bay bridge and reach their holiday destination. so it's going to be pretty busy around the bay area. i've got one more for you. let's go down and do peso pluma tomorrow night, 830 at chase center. that should be fun. that's the biggest mexican artist going on right now for labor day monday. if you have to head to work on bart, they will be running a sunday schedule. and if your friends or family are coming into town and you want to show them around on the ferry, they will be on the holiday schedule as well. so just check the websites back to you now. all right. you remember that first job of yours? barely. yes, i do retail. do you still list it on your resume? no, there's just not enough space. okay, well, if you don't, actually, it turns out you're not the only one coming up. we're going to talk about the frenzy brewing and the race for president over old summer jobs at mcdonald's. and you can help us clear the shelters at 625, find out how you can bring home

he's listed two jobs there. he is the founder and ceo of nvidia. and also he was a dishwasher in total. true story. dishwasher busboy waiter at denny's. denny's super important to nvidia because it was actually invented at nvidia at a different denny's. the one on berryessa. and like capital. wow. that's amazing. moon over miami. miami's you know, change your life. oh my goodness. look at that inspiration i my first job was at abercrombie and fitch as a, you know like a little retail. i did not put that in there because that's not contributing. and they don't know. no, they know now they know. but look at that from denny's to nvidia. all right. thanks a lot, scott. let's take a live look now across the bay area as the sun begins to rise on this friday, labor day weekend. it's looking pretty nice out there. meteorologist kari hall has everything you can expect. is this going to carry out through the weekend? yes. it looks so nice across much of the bay area. we don't have as much of the extreme heat, although there will be some places where you can go to feel the warmer
6:18 am
weather. and then a short drive will take you to some cooler temperatures. let's get a look at across the bay area, where we start out in the upper 50s and low 60s. if you are going to the coast and want to enjoy a beach day today in pacifica, we are starting out with clouds and fog upper seconds. we will get some peeks of sunshine today, but we're staying in the mid 60s throughout much of the afternoon with a breezy wind. and then as we take a look for some of the parts of the peninsula where we're headed for 80 degrees in palo alto, it will be 79 in hayward and 89 degrees in concord. if you want some cool weather, head to vacaville. it will be 93 today and in napa today. in the mid 80s, there's really not much of a change tomorrow for most of the microclimates, only seeing the temperatures shift a degree or two, but it will be cooler for much of the bay area on sunday into labor day with mostly 70s and 80s. so take a look at walnut creek. a bit of relief for the weekend from the high heat, but unfortunately, as we
6:19 am
head back to work on tuesday, it is going to be becoming much hotter with highs in the upper 90s. there on tuesday and wednesday and then gradually stepping down again for next weekend with some of those temperatures. so we are going to see a brief break from the high summer heat, but it's not over yet. we will start out september with highs in the mid to upper 90s in the valleys and san francisco will mostly see 70s, but we'll make it up to 80 next tuesday and cinthia checking in on some of those drive times. yeah, way less people on the road this morning. we do have one more day of school and work and those people are up and with us this morning in walnut creek, 680 is looking good. how about we check on some drive times around the bay area for you? we are just about a 24 minute ride going westbound highway four to get you from antioch. over on into 242 there in concord and about a 20 minute ride also from westbound 580 grant line to 680 san mateo bridge. all our bridges are looking fabulous. back to you. you know what time
6:20 am
of year it is? it is time to clear the shelters. i'm laura garcia, and guess what? this is it all when we comei'll explain
6:21 am
6:22 am
and you know what? it is a special day here on today in the bay because we're previewing clearing the shelters. you
6:23 am
probably heard about it. we team up with bay area shelters and facilities to help clear them out. they've got dogs. they've got puppies. the big event is coming up on saturday, september 7th. that's when i am marcus washington will be at berkeley humane, and that's where we find emily murphy, who's been with berkeley humane for quite some time. so tell us a little bit more about this big event that, that yeah, annually. so on september seventh bark and we are on the block is a it's actually the single largest same day adoption event in the state. wow. because we invite over 20 different rescues from all over california to bring their adoptable animals to us. and so anyone who's looking to adopt, if you come to bark around the block, you'll have many, many animals to choose from. right. and that's a great opportunity because literally they they shut down the street there. it's a family fun event. and you can go and kind of shop around for a pet. you can meet them. you can you know, maybe bring your animal to if you have another. yeah, absolutely. sometimes we have alumni who adopted at bark on the block. just come and have
6:24 am
a beer. we have live music. we have food trucks. we have a beer garden. and we'll have some activities for kids. it's a fantastic event. and, you know, some of our smaller rescues really need an audience like that to get some of these animals adopted. and they have a great success rate at bark around the block. so i mentioned this being laura garcia, because berkeley humane every year names some of the animals after us. and are we a little cantankerous this morning? she seems pretty happy. she seems pretty happy. yeah, she likes the camera and i always call it the kitten mobile. take a look over here. they have this, but it's fantastic because you can actually go and here in the window and interact with the little kittens, too. if you're really serious about it, you can sign up to go inside and kind of meet one of the kittens. and it's great because, yeah, it is literally i mean, you're going to have a lot of kittens out there. we will. well, berkeley main will have 85 animals ourselves ready for adoption. we took in 30 kittens from orange county, from an overcrowded shelter. there on monday. no kidding. yeah. so those those kittens will all be available at bark around the block. and this
6:25 am
this mobile adoption center, which is the kitty mobile, is actually a better name is great because we come places like here. we can do mobile adoption events where people can adopt actually out of the mobile unit. but this will all be set up at bark on the block and people come early. people line up early. it's a mobile adoption center to get kittens. yeah, exactly. that is the official name of the mobile adoption center. but i'm the one who calls it the kitty. you know, mobile, because that's what's so fun. and that is a remarkable thing. as you mentioned, you brought all those kittens from southern california last year. i recall it was after the devastating wildfires that they had in maui. you brought a lot of those animals. yeah. we did the islands. so what we did is we cleared out a shelter there so they would have room for all the animals displaced by the fire. we actually did something recently with the park fire. we went up to chico animal services and we cleared out their shelters so they would have room for the animals displaced by the fire. some of those animals actually from the park fire will be available for adoption at bark around the block. wow and that's that's the remarkable
6:26 am
thing is story after story that you hear, you're you're rescuing these animals not just from the shelter, but from different places across the world. i mean, and i love in unison how everyone really works together. yeah. and adopting is a fantastic way to save animals. you're really saving a life. and when you adopt, you actually create a new space in the shelter for us to bring another life in and save that animal as well. and this event as well, it's either free or reduced rates, depending on who you're adopting from. correct? yeah, which is great. that's a big savings right there. yeah. it's going to be great. it's going to be a lot of fun. it's actually just fun to come and watch all the adoptions happen all day. i mean, sometimes an adoption will happen every two minutes. wow. yeah. no kidding. yeah. that's right. they kind of put the leaderboard up there and we count how many adoptions that we get during the day. laura garcia is getting heavy for me right now. laura needs to go on a diet. well, she'll be available for adoption on september seventh. yeah, she'll be available. someone's going to be really lucky to get laura. she's very sweet. oh, yeah. i'll help sponsor that first bag of dog food. if you get laura garcia
6:27 am
home. how about that? how about that? so it's going to be a great event. once again, it's over at berkeley humane. not this saturday, but the following september 7th. marcus and i will be out there bright and early in the morning, and so will laura garcia. the other one. a lot more news ahead on this friday morning. you're watching today in the bay
6:28 am
6:29 am
6:30 am
at the state capitol. lawmakers are staring down tomorrow's deadline to pass new legislation. we're breaking down some of the key measures that are still in limbo. kamala harris sits down for her first long term interview since becoming the democratic pick for president. and we're tracking this labor day weekend traffic when you should head out the door and where you can save big on gas. this is today in the bay here we go friday morning. thanks so much for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia, and i'm ginger conejero saab in for marcus this morning. well, we're going to first get a look at the circus who is back in town today. here's a live look inside oakland arena. that is where ringling brothers will entertain fans this weekend. and we do have an early sneak peek. if you were with us the last hour, you already got a taste of bob redell and his circus
6:31 am
skills. but ahead at 645, he's coming back. or lack thereof. i didn't say that he's coming back to show what else he can do. hopefully he got some water. caught his breath. yeah. no kidding. it will be a lot of fun. we'll check in there. but first, let's check in with kari. she's going to look at our forecast. it was warmer to start our week. how are we looking now? it's going to be cooler for much of the bay area so it's going to be nice to have some more comfortable weather just in time for the weekend. as we start out, there will be some clouds that linger a lot longer, but that will also keep those temperatures from warming up too quickly. so our morning marine layer in dublin will stick around through about 9:00. and then as we go into today, our sky will clear. the temperatures will head for the low 80s here and we'll see some mid 80s for parts of the inland east bay, as well as the south county, up to 90. in gilroy this afternoon. and cynthia, it looks good at the bay bridge. i know everybody is pretty happy here. no metering lights really. the
6:32 am
entire bay area. hopefully it stays like this throughout the day. we know it's going to get more packed as the long weekend goes on. over on into san rafael 101. looking good. your standard 25 minute ride from about novato over on into downtown, and we'll take a look at one more oakland 880 also flowing smoothly. and i didn't forget about you down here in the south bay. also a 20 minute ride as you head up 101 from a south san jose over on into mountain view. back to you. thanks a lot, cynthia. a final farewell today for a san jose police community service officer who died while doing traffic control at the scene of an accident. long pham died on august 3rd when he was struck by a car whose driver police say was under the influence. his funeral is scheduled for 11. this morning at sap center, and it will be followed by a flyover and a procession. it is open to the public. lawmakers are up against the clock in sacramento. tomorrow is the final day to approve new legislation in the
6:33 am
current session. today in the bay is thom jensen is in our newsroom. and tom, there are still some important bills that are hanging in the balance. good morning. yes, several bills are waiting for either legislature or the governor's approval or both. and the deadline for legislative approval is friday. measures addressing everything from artificial intelligence, security to legalize cannabis cafes like the ones in amsterdam. the legislature already passed a bill on the cannabis cafes, and it's awaiting a thumbs up or down from the governor. the governor is expected to sign another measure that passed both the house and the senate. one that limits cell phone use by students in public schools. he said. every classroom should be a place of focus learning and growth free from cell phones. other bills, like senate bill 1446, are still waiting for a final legislative approval. if it passes, it would require stores to staff at least one worker for every two self-checkout stations, and an assembly bill 3172 is still being debated in sacramento. would attempt to hold social media companies accountable for harms that their algorithms and
6:34 am
technology cause to children. the legislature did approve senate bill 1047, the ai safety and security bill authored by senator scott wiener. it adds public protections from cyber attacks and prohibits ai use for developing chemical, nuclear, or biological weapons. assembly bill 1840, which allows undocumented migrants to qualify for state home loans, also passed the legislature before friday's deadline, but governor newsom has not signaled whether he'll veto it or make it law. the new driverless truck ban also that bill passed legislature and is awaiting the governor's signature. it forces owners of driverless trucks to have at least one human in the cab of each vehicle while they're being operated on public roads. but governor newsom vetoed a similar measure last year. the governor has until september 30th to sign any bill that reaches his desk by tomorrow's legislative deadline. ginger and laura, a lot to get done. thank you very much, tom.
6:35 am
on two decision 2024 kamala harris sat down for her first interview as the official democratic candidate for president last night on cnn. and scott mcgrew joins us now. harris certainly has a challenge on her plate. she needs to be her own person, but she's still working in the biden white house. every vice president running for president has this little conflict, right? she can't say anything bad about the president. that would hurt her politically with democrats and many of her policies seem to be very similar to biden's anyway. now, it wasn't always the case. there's harris in 2019 on the left. at the time, she criticized many of biden's proposed policies, suggesting a ban on fracking, for instance. but when biden picked harris as her vice president, she dropped that opposition. there you see, the modern day harris on the right, harrison walz. we're talking with cnn's dana bash. no and i made that clear on the debate stage in 2020 that i would not ban fracking as vice president. i did not ban
6:36 am
fracking as president. i will not ban fracking, a fracking ban would not be popular necessarily in pennsylvania, a state both sides are looking to win. other notable moments last night, bash tried to ask her about race and identity politics. harris shut that down, move on, she said, and harris said she would nominate a republican to her presidential cabinet. i would, i think, i think it's really important. i i have spent my career inviting diversity of opinion. i think it's important to have people at the table when some of the most important decisions are being made that have different views, different experiences. and i think it would be to the benefit of the american public to have a member of my cabinet who was a republican. harris, accompanied by tim walz on that interview, he did not say as much. some criticized harris for not doing the interview alone. but really, these sorts of interviews are not unusual. mitt romney sat with his running mate, paul
6:37 am
ryan, for his first interview as the official candidate for the republican party back in 2012. also, not that unusual to have a member of a different party in your presidential cabinet. norm mineta, who that's a name that is familiar to anybody in san jose, a democrat, was the transportation secretary for a republican. george w bush. the u.s. army confirms an official at arlington national cemetery was shoved by someone in the trump entourage on monday as they tried to film in a restricted area. you're seeing some of that recording on tiktok posted to donald trump's official account. trump told our dasha burns he didn't know the rules about using arlington in a photo shoot, and suggested maybe it was one of the gold star families who posted the video. should your campaign have put out those videos and photos? well, we have a lot of people, you know, we have people, tiktok people, you know, we're leading the internet. but on that hallowed ground, should they have put out, i don't know what the rules and regulations are. i
6:38 am
don't know who did it. and it could have been them. it could have been the parents. it could have been somebody. it was your campaign's tiktok that put out the i really don't know anything about it. all i do is i stood there and i said, if you'd like to have a picture, we can have a picture. now you heard trump say he's leading the internet. he's not leading in key states, according to a new bloomberg morning consult poll. now, these numbers favor harris, but mostly because they're in the margin of error. it's kind of a jump ball. let me show you. harris is up by two points in georgia, for instance, three points in michigan and then four points in both nevada and pennsylvania. she's plus eight in wisconsin. a separate poll by the wall street journal nationally puts harris up 48% to 47%. laura, once again in the margin of error. and as i say about national polls, that's not how we elect a president. yeah, exactly. so interesting to see how it all works out. thank you. scott. hey, let's take a live look outside. bay area roads. not bad. right now for friday morning. but boy, this

weekend they'll be packed with drivers because it's a big holiday with today actually being the biggest day to take off. chp also launching a statewide maximum enforcement period, and that will end late monday night. so play it safe, buckle up, don't drink and drive. gas prices. they're actually cooperating. if you want to get out and about. they're trending down. triple a says gas prices nationally are averaging 3.36. that's $0.45 cheaper than this time last year. of course, bay area prices nowhere near that. national average. cinthia pimentel has been keeping track of where you can get the best deals, and you got a little friend with you this morning, i do, i have robert honda here. the roads are looking perfect and so are those gas prices, right? how about we tell people where to get the cheapest ones? because long holiday weekend gas stations will be busy. i hope the mic picks up. he's purring. so very happy to be on today in the bay. these prices reported by you on
6:40 am
gasbuddy.com. thank you for being our eyes out there. we'll start in the south bay with 3.85 at costco. that one is off of east capitol expressway. it's going to be busy there as people stock up on labor day supplies. it is up $0.10 though, compared to yesterday when i was telling you about how about we go over to fremont 405 at vargas off of 880 and finally 417 in san mateo at the exxon on 19th avenue. it's sandwiched right there, right, robert, between el camino and 101 and the san mateo bridge. so good luck getting to it. if you see anything cheaper, let us know. how about we go to the roadways now? robert handa tell everybody that traffic is perfect this morning. green sensors. we'd love to see it. it is a little slow getting to the san rafael richmond bridge right there, the toll plaza stretching back the traffic to castro. but then after that, once you get on the span, it's about a ten minute ride into marin county. fremont also looking good. 880 both directions. and let's do one more san jose 101 coming up
6:41 am
from gilroy, san martin, morgan hill looking good and also going the other direction. fabulous. how about we go on and check robert handa on that fabulous getaway forecast with carey destinations? people are going to? yes. so it's going to be great this weekend. whether you're traveling with your adopted new pet or not. we are going to have some comfortable temperatures. take a look at palisades tahoe. that's a live view. so we're going to have some really nice weather there. starting out in the low 40s and headed for the low 80s over the next several days. if you are planning to go to the beach, you will need a jacket. our temperatures in stinson beach, only up to about 65 degrees and foggy and we'll start out with some fog in santa cruz. we'll see a high of 73 degrees and 63. in monterey, mostly 60s and 70s throughout the weekend. but if you're staying here at home, you might want to check out the last friday of the season for music in the square in redwood city. it's going to be 74 degrees at the time that the music begins, and dropping down to the upper 60s after sunset. and then in
6:42 am
pleasanton at the alameda county fairgrounds, there will be the scottish highland gathering and games happening this weekend. and we do have some nice weather for this will be a little warm during the middle of the afternoon with highs in the mid 80s, but temperatures cool down quickly in the evening into the upper 50s and if you're heading to napa for the black radio experience at the meritage resort, it's going to be in the mid 80s and lots of sunshine throughout the weekend, but it will be cool if you're if you're going to some of those evening live performances, it's going to drop down to the mid 50s there and looking at la for the weekend. upper 70s today, really nice weather throughout the weekend. back to you lauren. ginger, thanks a lot kari. looking good. well, there's a new warning from pg&e scammers stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from unwitting customers. coming up next on today in the bay, the telltale signs to look out for to avoid falling victim yourself. plus, i'm bob redell. we're live here

6:47 am
enjoying new life after a major revamp. it's now back in the bay area this weekend. we're talking about the one and only ringling brothers circus and talk about a high wire act that we saw a bit of that earlier. our bob redell is live inside oakland arena this morning. bob, we saw the high wire, but where's the clown car? you know, this is interesting. i was talking to laura about this offline. good morning to ginger and laura. you know, the circus, ringling brothers, barnum and bailey circus. they got rid of the official clowns years ago for a number of reasons. and, of course, the animals. but this is the first time that they're back here in the bay area revamped. you can see the center stage here. you got the hoop divers right there. they're getting ready to do some hoop diving. but this is the first time they're back in a number of years since before covid. again it's revamped. you see the led screens. it kind of gives you a sense of what the show is going
6:48 am
to be like. skylar miser, the human cannonball. i'm the human rocket. the human rocket. you. this is a family tradition. your parents have been doing this. yes, for a number of years. you and i were just talking. what is your preflight routine like? i didn't realize the science that goes into it. and i know it's important for the obvious reasons. so i'm checking the temperature about every 30 minutes. i go back in my book and look at the angle and the distance, as every flight is different and so you do have a manual or a record of all your flights. and you said it's not required, but your dad asks you to do it for safety reasons. and so then are you basically saying, oh, i was maybe a couple of feet longer this flight, so maybe i should readjust for the next flight? is it that kind of. absolutely so as every flight is different and you only get one shot, so just making sure that everything is perfect for the flight okay. so what's the temperature like in here in the oakland arena. and how does that impact your decisions on what kind of pressure you're going to have in the cannon. so the temperature here is about ten
6:49 am
degrees colder than i normally have it. so i will put a heater on to make sure that it's at the temperature i want it. and then how much adjustment would you have. are we talking inches or feet. feet. so it could vary between five foot or even two inches. and you're going 65 miles an hour. yes, 110ft. you're hitting an airbag. have you ever had a moment when you're in the air and you're like, oh, man, maybe i should have done the adjustment different, and you're coming up a little short or a little long. always the flight. the flight to everybody is about two seconds. but to me it feels like two minutes really. i feel every millisecond. and as soon as i come out of it, i can tell whether i'm going to be long or short or if the flight is perfect. okay, so if you're long or short, i mean, you obviously haven't missed the bag, but what are you doing mid-flight to adjust that? so trampoline skills really help to have proprioception, which is an awareness of where you are in the air. so every flight is
6:50 am
completely different. so it could vary every time. and you're trying to expand your body or tuck in more. i mean, i'm assuming that's what you're talking about, depending on how my initial takeoff goes. depends on what i need to do in the air. okay. and what about the angle of your head, the aerodynamics, does that come into play to everything? the human cannonballs in the past used to wear helmets, and we found that it actually makes you top heavy. so we don't fly with any protective gear. and i noticed you stretching earlier. i know you're i don't know if you're launching today, but this is obviously something that requires a lot of physical fitness. yes, a lot of the impact is in your back and in your hips. so i have to make sure that those are really strong. i'm sorry. i'm geeking out on this. i just didn't know there was so much that goes into this because i just assumed you got into the cannon. you shot out and you're like, hey, let's make it. but i there's so much physics involved and there's so
6:51 am
much on the line. i just found it. i interviewed human cannonballs before, but i didn't realize. yeah, i didn't realize there was so much that went into this. this is very interesting. thank you. skyler. good luck to you. circus of course, in town this weekend here at the oakland arena. and then next weekend at the sap center down there in san. it really, really was. i mean, you know, i thought you were just going to ask her, do you eat anything before? you know, we all learned a little something new about. well, you know, we could do the before we could, we could do the before. i could go in and do it without the adjustments. and we can watch how it's done. this is why we don't work for the circus. we're good with that. it's true talent. they're very cool. and it shows kids look how important physics are. all right. thanks so much, bob. very cool stuff. well, she was taking her own kind of flights, which, oh, my gosh, without the protective gear. that was also everything's precision. wow. yeah. you're keeping an eye out on those flights for the weekend to the flights. the flights that most of us. right, with the seat belts and yes, a lot of protective gear there. but we are seeing some delays. we're watching out for the weather
6:52 am
conditions and we're getting some delays at sfo right now. so make sure you're checking ahead before you get there. we are seeing the low clouds and the low ceilings right now causing some problems, but we also have a big cold front that's moving across the midwest. and that's making some delays in chicago right now, 75 minute average delays. so that may have a ripple effect for many of the other airports across the country. once again, here at home, we're seeing now 45, 46 minute delays on average at sfo as our temperatures today will be across the country feeling much cooler as that cold front moves through. but out ahead of that in parts of the south, it is going to be hot still 90s and the heat index values over 100 degrees. at least we're seeing our temperatures coming down here. if you're staying at home for the holiday weekend, it will be in the mid 80s for napa and low 80s for dublin. san jose today, 80 degrees. so really nice. and we'll see more temperatures like this all throughout the weekend. you
6:53 am
might want to check out the kings mountain art fair in the redwoods. that's going to be in the low to mid 70s for those highs over the next several day, and then wrapping up the weekend with some monday night football here in the bay area. the 40 niners are going to have some spectacular weather for monday evening, and it looks really nice for most of us. temperatures in the low to mid 80s, and we're bracing again for the return of some hot temperatures for the middle of next week. while san francisco will continue to see some comfortable air all throughout the labor day weekend. and cynthia looks pretty smooth on the roads. no metering lights to report of kari. they haven't been turned on the entire morning. we've been on right there. bay bridge toll plaza everybody cruising into the city. san mateo bridge also looking pretty healthy at this hour. we just hope everybody stays safe as you get to your holiday destination. back to you. most definitely. thank you cynthia. well happening now. crews are still trying to finish some repairs after a water main break shut down charleston road near shoreline boulevard in mountain view yesterday
6:54 am
afternoon. the street reopening time is still to be announced. but that's not all the city says, because so much water was pushed through the system. some people who live nearby may experience discolored tap water. they do say it's still safe to drink, and it clears up the longer you run that tap. now we're back in minutes with a look at this morning's top stories, including good news. if you are hitting the roads so much, or how much you can expect to save at the pump this holiday weekend, we'll have that. but first, here's something to bring a smile to your face. our school shout out series. my name is kara cooper and we are at francis scott key elementary school in san francisco. this is my kindergarten classroom and we have something we'd like to say to you. are you ready, friends? let's say it. here we go. good morning, bay area, and good morning to those kindergartners. what a big milestone for you guys. don't forget your kids can also take part. you can send us
