final day of the month. as we take this live look outside the golden gate bridge. cloud cover there, but that golden sunshine breaking through in the north bay and some wind out there. thank you so much for starting your saturday morning with us. i'm kira klapper cinthia pimentel has a quick look at our microclimate forecast and what do we have on tap as we look for a lot of us look forward to a three day weekend, three day weekend, unofficial end to summer. we say it ain't so, but it is happening. good morning. good morning everyone. we have those clouds also through san jose, but some mild temperatures to start our saturday 64 degrees. it continues out towards livermore and a bit cooler in the valleys. 58 to start our day, we're going to watch how the low clouds impact takeoff times over at sfo. if you are planning a little getaway and we start the day there at 59 degrees overall, it's going to be a pretty quiet and mild labor day weekend holiday that will continue on into our sunday plans. i mean, monday plans if you're doing a barbecue or just taking it easy,

that's fine. but after that tuesday, it's back to work for everybody and the summer heat will return. we're talking upper seconds possible triple digits, so i'll show you the seven-day forecast coming up in a few minutes. keir, back to you. all right, cynthia, thanks. we are following developing news in san francisco, where police are investigating how a young girl was shot inside her family's home, leaving her fighting for her life as sfpd says, around 530 yesterday, they responded to a home on chicago way that's near the cow palace. the victim's mom says they were inside their home getting ready for dinner when the eight year old girl was shot. the family says the bullets came from outside the home. police say the little girl was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries. if you have any information, you're urged to call sfpd and you can remain anonymous. also, developing lanes are back open this morning on westbound i-80 in san pablo. this after a fiery crash

involving at least three cars. this is citizen video from the scene. you can see two cars on fire. amazingly, everyone survived the crash caused a significant backup late last night. the investigation into what caused the crash continues in the south bay. now the owner of a bar is pleading for help. he says burglars have broken into his business four times in the last month and a half. the veteran says most of what was stolen can be replaced, but that this last time he was hit, the thieves stole something irreplaceable. today, in the bay's jocelyn moran has the story you'll see only on nbc bay area. mike has owned this bar for 11 years, and in just the last month and a half, he says he's been robbed of thousands of dollars and of items he fears he won't ever be able to get back. our safe was right here, and they just ripped that right off the wall. mike downing says the first time two people broke into his bar, mike's place was on

july 8th. thieves got away with about $7,000. since then, he says he's been broken into three more times. this is where my first chase machine was and the guy ripped it off the wall. this video is from last week. during the second break-in. this time thieves got away with the change machine, forcing mike to make changes. this is my new change machine, which is bolted into the floor. the fourth and most recent break-in happened just yesterday. you can see this person on surveillance video has no luck getting into the new change machine, but they did take memorabilia. it was my michael jordan jersey chicago bulls. but mike says what's hurt him the most is priceless. a collage they took off the wall a reminder of the time he served in vietnam. and i had the combat infantry badge that was stolen, which meant a lot to me. it means nothing to the robbers, and that's been it's been a terrible month and a half, to be honest with you. mike filed a police report after the first break-in and police are investigating. he says he wants other businesses in the area to

be aware of what's been happening to him. i'm just bummed out, man. i mean, i'm kind of old now, and in my era, none of this stuff ever happened in san jose. jocelyn moran, nbc bay area news. in the north bay, a community is shaken after a stabbing at a high school and police say it was gang related. it happened yesterday afternoon at elsie allen high school in santa rosa. police say a 13 year old boy was stabbed during a fight on campus. two other boys then joined in to defend him. witnesses say those two repeatedly kicked the boy with the knife in the head. the stabbing victim was taken to the hospital with a minor stab wound to his back. he is expected to be okay. the 14 year olds were arrested and booked into juvenile hall, but police are still looking for a fourth boy. anyone with information is urged to call santa rosa police. in the east bay high schoolers are in mourning, remembering a friend and classmate who was killed in a motorcycle crash.

they gathered for a memorial yesterday outside mission san jose high school in fremont. dylan regan had just begun his junior year at the high school. police say he was riding his motorcycle on wednesday when a car made a left turn in front of him, regan crashing into the car. he died. police say the other driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. now to san jose, where hundreds, hundreds of officers from across california gathered to remember and honor one of their own killed by a suspected drunk driver. this was yesterday's memorial service at the sap center for san jose community service officer long pham. earlier this month, the 34 year old officer was conducting traffic control when a driver hit and killed him and critically injured his colleague

veronica bear. bear was released from the hospital just in time to join the procession, which closed much of downtown san jose. state attorney general rob bonta was among the many speakers praising officer pham for his dedication during his nearly two years on the force. from a brother to a brother, i bid farewell and rest in peace. the pham family had asked me to convey their heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming support you have shown during this difficult times. pham is the first san jose community service officer ever to be killed in the line of duty. he is the 14th sj, pd officer to be killed in the line of duty. now to people who live in one east bay community, they are frustrated after they say they're being targeted again and again. their mailboxes robbed and they only discovered this

latest crime when they looked at their community cameras today in the bay's gia vang reports from fremont first. thieves hauled away an entire cluster mailbox from this fremont condo community. that was in january. around 530 friday morning, cameras caught this. my first thought was, man, i never expected this to happen again. that too in like the same year, right? mayank chopra was living here then and still owns property in the complex. this time he shares video of a white suv rolling up someone getting out and opening the cluster mailboxes with the help of another wearing a mask. they are able to open the whole cluster box, and they start taking out all the stuff that that's inside. the criminals do the same at another cluster mailbox in the complex. samuel shannon. you kind of feel violated, sort of thinks he's one of the lucky ones today. but like many of his neighbors, has been on alert since january. if i see that we got a package while i'm at work,

i'll kind of rush home because if it gets too late in the evening, things will kind of start disappearing. what's different in this latest theft? the suspects appear to use a ke, perhaps a stolen one. the u.s. government accountability office says robbery was the fastest growing and most common crime against postal workers. more than 600 reported in 2023, up nearly seven fold from 2019. the robberies have been the number one way in the bay area. we've had these keys taken, depending on some of the older locks, there may be a counterfeit key, but the mere possession of a real or, counterfeit postal key is up to ten years in federal prison. those are. that's another federal offense. fitch says never engage with suspects because they're often armed. instead reported. and if you can get video. little comfort to neighbors now figuring out again how to continue to secure their mail moving forward. these things probably force us to install some gates and all. in fremont, gia vang nbc bay area

news. we're going to turn now to the race for the white house. it is coming to the bay area to campaign for vice president kamala harris. transportation secretary pete buttigieg will be in san francisco on wednesday. the prominent democrat will be attending a fundraiser reception for the harris-walz campaign. one of the hosts is longtime tech investor jillian manus, who's been a longtime republican donor. meanwhile, the vice president's husband, second gentleman doug emhoff, stopped in san francisco yesterday for a quick visit. he enjoyed an exclusive and pricey brunch at quince. it's a three star michelin restaurant in jackson square. tickets started at $25,000. house speaker emerita nancy pelosi also was there. meanwhile former president trump spent yesterday campaigning in the crucial swing state of pennsylvania. 67 days from now, we're going to win pennsylvania. we're going to defeat comrade

lunches today in the bay's marcus washington has more on how to apply. with summer wrapping up, today is the deadline to apply and receive assistance for your children's food expenses. california sun box this is a new program which awards $120 per child to cover summer lunch expenses for families who qualify. now, summer break is over, but they actually have extended the program to allow more people to become aware of the services you will have until today to apply for the debit card, and recipients will have 122 days to use those funds for groceries. now everyone being encouraged to use it before other calfresh

meaning a popular russian river tourist destination will be closed this labor day holiday weekend. a component problem we're told, caused the dam to fail thursday night in guerneville. that led to a water breach and forced the closure of the summer crossing at vacation beach on the russian river in guerneville. the seasonal recreational spot is used for picnics, swimming and fishing. the crossing typically is open through september. so far, no word on when it will reopen. it is nearing the 11th hour to sell the a's coliseum to a private investment group. for years, the site has been co-owned half by the city of oakland and half by the a's. so in two separate deals, the african american sports and entertainment group, or asg, agreed to buy the entire property. the group has agreed to pay the a's $125 million, but

alameda county still needs to approve the deal. as for the city of oakland, a's half, there's an even more critical deadline. asg agreed to pay the city $105 million. much of that money is expected to be used to help balance oakland's budget. the first 5 million has to get to the city by tomorrow, or a so-called contingency budget would kick in, and that would mean major cuts to public safet, staffing and services. we will keep track of that. the bay area is full of brand new start ups with workers whose linkedin's include a dozen jobs or more, but our scott mcgrew found one silicon valley company that's been in the same place, making the same things with the same people for decades. that'll do it. that is a phalanx weapon system undergoing tests on board the uss george h.w. bush.

that. scott. thanks so much. we're going to check in now with cinthia pimentel for our microclimate forecast last day of the month. can't believe it. and if you're getting up early to hit the road for labor day, we are looking at some pretty skies. yeah, the clouds are here, but not too bad. we are looking at peeks of sunshine starting to break through the golden gate bridge, upper 50s there some low 60s for palo alto and we get a bit more mild down here in san jose. we should lose all of that cloud cover as we go on into lunchtime. so what do our temperatures look like for the rest of today? we're going to tick them up just a little bit in through parts of the north bay. there in clear lake, if that's where you're headed, 96 degrees 92 over on in fairfield for the south county. we also see some warm temperatures as soon as you start driving down into morgan hill and gilroy. also in those upper seconds and 90s. but for the bay shore, we are going to keep it a little bit breezy. not too bad. 71 in san francisco. that looks nice too. 77 in hayward. and we're going to do 84 in los gatos for you today. let's talk about some

at it, i know it's hard for me, but for you. well, now it's, like, not hard anymore. like i'm more entertaining, but, jonathan, you have over 30 years and experience. actually jonathan is the sixth generation of circus performer specializing on the high wire. as you can se. and so he has pretty much experienced. so it's second hand is what you're saying when it comes to the balance. what is the trick though when you're out there on the wire. the wire is, you know, looks like it's you maybe have an inch of space for your feet. it's like a half inch, half inch, half inch. so imagine like always, i'm trying to explain to the people what we feel when we walk on the wire. imagine all the suffering you and your feet when you walk on the floor. now to have all the weight of your body, all the support in just that half inch cable wire. so like it's a little pretty different balance that you have to have. but like i said, so many years of yeah, of practice experience. and so that way we can be capable to do this. but 25ft in the air on the triangular highway over there, i haven't been on the circus in

car permanently if a person is convicted. the california highway patrol started tracking the events on social media. they hope it will shape their response. they'll schedule them on a specific day, but we don't necessarily know the time. so we are constantly monitoring those to try to get the updates as to where they're going to end up. aside from the sideshows, all the officers at the event agree dealing with the large groups of motorcycles has become even more difficult. they say the motorcycles often don't have license plates, makes them impossible to track, and they can speed away more quickly through traffic as police arrive to break up the sideshows, they say they're still figuring out their strategy for dealing with the sideshows. today is international overdose awareness day over the past many years, state and local public health officials have been increasing their efforts to expand and provide more services to people

who need and seek overdose prevention services. our ginger conejero saab has more on the ongoing work now in place and information on a new website now available for those searching for help. kira. each year on the last day of august, people around the world mark international overdose awareness day and san francisco leaders say in terms of overdoses, last year was the city's deadliest ever. numbers this year are shaping up to be eerily similar now. we spoke with one national addiction expert who says people everywhere need to keep in mind just one pill can kill. in this drug supply, fentanyl is contaminated with many different drugs out there. so someone could think that they're buying a xanax and it has fentanyl in them. in it, and then they overdose and die. it's quite dangerous. santa clara county is marking international overdose awareness day by launching a new website with resources for overdose prevention and

treatment. the website also connects people seeking information to certain medicines like naloxone, counseling services and support groups for recovery. now, these resources aren't only available for patients. anyone interested in supporting can also access training modules and tools to enhance their own overdose response. here's the website right here kira. important work back to you. important work indeed. ginger. thank you. today is the final day to approve new legislation in the current session in sacramento. that includes a measure that limits cell phone use by students in public schools. governor gavin newsom said he will sign it into law. another bill just passed but is awaiting the governor's signature. it is the legalization of cannabis cafes in california similar to amsterdam. the legislature also approved a comprehensive artificial intelligence bill authored by senator scott wiener of san francisco. it adds

protections for the public from cyber attacks and prohibits its use for developing chemical, nuclear, or biological weapons. also, a new bill that would allow undocumented migrants to qualify for state backed mortgage loans also passed. governor newsom has, until the end of september to sign any of these bills into law. meantime, there are still some bills that are still up in the air awaiting house or senate votes. one that would further limit self-checkout stations and require staffing at the stations of one employee per two stations. that still faces a final vote. another bill that would attempt to hold social media companies accountable for harms that their algorithms and their technology caused to children also still being debated in sacramento. facing final votes today. all right. back here locally, we're taking a live look outside at bay area roadways. not too bad out there

right now. the california highway patrol is already under its statewide maximum enforcement period for this labor day holiday weekend. that means extra officers on the road focusing on catching impaired drivers and keeping everyone else safe. it's set to expire late monday night. if you're hitting the road, gas prices are trending down. triple a says prices nationally are averaging 3.36 a gallon. that's $0.45 cheaper than this time last year. of course, bay area prices are nowhere near that national average as gas prices are trending down though this holiday weekend. the debate on how much americans spend on energy like gas and electricity, is going to be a big election issue. this year. nbc's garrett hake is in battleground pennsylvania, where there are questions over whether the candidates can keep their promises. donald trump on the attack against kamala harris in the keystone state. she's anti-fracking. she's anti-everything. this

pennsylvania, in the second largest gas producing state in the country. the former president hammering harris for changing her position on fracking. there's no question i'm in favor of banning fracking. joe biden will not ban fracking. i would not ban fracking. as vice president, i did not ban fracking. as president, i will not ban fracking. she's vowed repeatedly that we will ban fracking. if you don't have fracking, you don't have a you don't have a commonwealth with prices at the pump up more than 50% from this time four years ago, in the depths of the pandemic. the cost of the fuels that fill our cars and power our homes has become a critical campaign issue. earlier this month, the former president introduced and immediately hedged on his ambitious energy plan, relying heavily on expanding natural gas production and building new nuclear plants. we intend to slash prices by half within 12 months at a maximum 18 months, and if it doesn't work out, you'll say, oh, well, i voted for him. david bernhardt served as trump's secretary of the interior. is

into the south bay. as we go on into our afternoon, our daytime highs are going to stay pretty comfortable. what we've been seeing the last couple of days, 80s to some low 90s in vacaville, as well as gilroy. we'll do 81 in downtown san jose, and we'll keep the coast. still pretty breezy and mild in those mid 60s. a lot of people might be hitting the road, but if you're doing a staycation here, hey, join the club san jose. over the next couple of days we'll see mild temperatures, a bit cooler for tomorrow and monday also looks spectacular and we go on to the beach. lots of people going to do that too. stinson, good morning to you. as we take a look at your outlook for the next couple of days. we'll do temperatures in the low 70s. santa cruz looks stunning over the next couple of days, and monterey will start the day and kind of hang out with the fog there and be a bit cooler in those mid 60s. but boy, after that that's when the heat ramps up. september. we're going to call it september sizzle as we take a look at our temperature outlook focusing on the west coast. high pressure is going to start to bring some of that

desert heat into the bay area. and the way that it rotates to could be looking at some offshore wind situations. so we'll keep that in mind as we take a look at these temperatures just ramping up starting tuesday. back to school, back to work and back to these high temperatures. upper 90s for parts of the north bay 99 in concord possible 94 in los gatos. and as we go on into the peninsula, pretty warm 70s and 80s. and we can expect that continuing into wednesday, which i think will be the hottest day as we track possible triple digit temperatures, those low humidities, breezy winds, and the heat really continues on into thursday. so aside from those factors, we could be talking about our health to lingering heat. could be dangerous for our overnight recovery. so keep that in mind and share the message with everybody that you're getting together with on this labor day holiday. san francisco. look at that. that is just some stunning weather. of course. sunny skies and possible 80s there in the city. we're talking warm in the city. we're talking hot in our valleys. 80s this weekend. but

where police are investigating how a young girl was shot and critically wounded, left fighting for her life. sfpd says last evening they responded to a home on chicago way near the cow palace. the victim's mom said they were inside their home getting ready for dinner when the eight year old girl was shot. police say the little girl was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries. the bullet seemed to come from outside of the home. if you have any information, call sfpd. you can remain anonymous. police on both sides of the bay are cracking down on sideshows and large groups of dirt bikes. yesterday, mayor london breed announced she wants everyone involved in sideshows to face

criminal penalties. so she's introducing new laws that would allow police to charge not only the people who organize and participate in these illegal shows, but also the people who watch them. breed wants to extend the time police can impound vehicles, even permanently. if a person is convicted. the chp has started tracking the events on social media to better shape their responses. going to turn now to a live look outside as we begin our labor day holiday weekend. we are now under the california highway patrol maximum enforcement period. that means extra officers on the road focusing on catching impaired drivers. the enforcement period ends late monday night and before we go, cynthia has one last look at the forecast for folks like us who are sticking around for the holiday weekend staycation. temperatures are going to be good as we stay here and look at our inland valleys. we are going to keep it in the 80s for the most part tomorrow.
