from cbs news bay area, this is the evening edition. >> san francisco ramping up its efforts to charge drug dealers with murder, as overdose deaths continue to spiral out of control. oakland police are testing out a new approach to catch auto burglars with the help of social media. we are monitoring the high fire danger across the bay area with a red flag warning this weekend for parts of the bay. good afternoon, i'm elizabeth cook, state leaders are trying a new approach to tackling the opioid crisis in the city, specifically when it comes to the number of overdose deaths. they are hoping to investigate those debts as homicides and charging the dealers with murder. anne makovec is joining us now, this isn't necessarily a new idea for san francisco but now it is becoming a joint effort. >> reporter: brooke jenkins made the announcement about a

year ago, but didn't know how difficult it would be, the hope is that with increased resources from the state and using the same investigative techniques as homicide cases, they would be able to get enough evidence to pursue murder charges against some dealers in the city and track where opioids are coming from. we have not been able to charge anyone to date because we have not been investigating these debts as a city and county. it requires police officers and other law enforcement agencies to actually look into who sold the deadly substance to the person who died and that is not something we have been able to afford resources to do up until now. >> the task force is not expected to be up and operating until the new year, it is going to be made up of the police, district attorney's office, chp and the national guard. 84 people died from drug overdoses last month alone . the city is

currently on pace to have 850 opioid debts by the end of the year. this is just the latest move from mayor london breed and governor newsom, the tough love approach to the drug crisis with the mayor trying to put a measure on the march ballot to require drug screenings and treatment. beginning today, oakland police are trying anyway to crack down on car break-ins, they are hoping to try to catch these with the help of social media. the department created new accounts on instagram and x. people can send them a direct message if they see someone breaking into their car. the department says there have been more than 11,000 burglaries of locked vehicles across oakland this year. while some in oakland are happy to try anything new to try to solve the issue, others we spoke to say it's not as simple as tracking them, after they leave the scene of a crime.

>> someone followed one of the cars into the garage, and they were driving a stolen car. so, to compound their problems. >> it is so complex, that you can't solve it with twitter. >> nopd is running this pilot program from now through sunday at the department stresses they don't want anyone to try to stop an auto burglary while it is happening, they just want photos and video of the break-ins or the aftermath. the city of oakland is accusing a hotel of underpaying minimum wage employees. they are demanding to pay thousands of dollars in restitution. the radisson hotel is being ordered to pay more than $400,000 to 128 workers, in the investigation from the workplace, they employment standards reveal the hotel failed to pay workers wages

from july of 2019 through april of 2020. there was no documentation of correcting the wages. oakland's minimum wage law requires hotels to pay employees with health benefits $15 per hour and $20 per hour if they work without the benefits. we reached out to the oakland radisson hotel for a response and we are waiting to hear back. alameda county district attorney, pamela price and the oakland chamber of commerce met with concerned business owners today to try to address ongoing concerns over crying. she highlighted her connections to alameda county as a longtime business owner and her involvement in the civil rights movements in her youth. the main focus was on what she says are misconceptions about her responsibilities as d.a. >> i don't control what the police do, i don't set what the priorities are for this city. this is one of 14 cities, as

much as i love oakland. >> she added that she continues to meet with sheng thao and the interim police chief to address their concerns and figure out ways they can work together to reduce crime in the town. now to the very latest out of lewiston, maine where police and fbi agents are searching by land, air and sea to find the man suspected of killing 18 people at a bowling alley and bar. the shelter in place order given to residents in southern maine has just been lifted. nearly 700 square miles have been on lockdown during the manhunt. investigators are still searching the water near a boat launch where the suspect's car was found. >> reporter: heavily armed police are scouring the woods in southern maine and divers are searching the river, part of their focus of the boat dock where they found this car

belonging to robert card, the suspect in wednesday night's mass shooting in nearby, lewiston. >> the river is a big piece of this. the car was located there, evidence was located in the vehicle along the shores of the river. >> reporter: law enforcement health cbs news the evidence includes a firearm that card legally purchased, he had access to numerous other guns and they are tracing each shell casings found at the scenes. police say he opened fire inside a bowling alley and restaurant using a semiautomatic assault rifle with an extended magazine and scope. >> last night, k9 units and helicopters searched his home town of oden, focusing on one home in particular. law enforcement selfless tell the associated press they found a suicide note in his cell phone. some of the 18 victims have been identified, 13 were wounded, three critically. >> often, these rounds will hit bone and shattered bone becomes

tonight. the country's military carried out a raid last night in the southern gaza strip. armored military vehicles destroyed some of the terror groups suspected tunnel systems and military compounds. a larger invasion is still to come. his government faces mounting pressure from families of hostages taken by hamas back on october 7th. to bring their loved ones home israeli officials believe hamas still has more than 200 hostages. the world health organization is calling for $80 million in aid to respond to the humanitarian need. the u.n. is warning is on the verge of running out of fuel and hospitals say they don't have enough aid to treat all the wounded. some hospitals don't even have enough water for doctors to wash their hands. health officials are warning that things are only going to get worse. >> what is needed is meaningful

and uninterrupted breakthrough, and to succeed, we need to ensure this reaches those in need. >> the united nation is warning a possible war crime is committed in gaza, they are deeply concerned about the collective punishment of people in gaza in response to the atrocious attack by hamas, which it says was also a war crime. the u.s. military has carried out its own air strikes in syria overnight, they targeted facilities they say were used by iranian backed militia groups. it comes in response to 19 attacks against u.s. forces in syria and iraq in the last 10 days. 21 troops have been injured in those attacks, 19 so far have been diagnosed with traumatic brain injuries and while joe biden and millie at officials -- military officials warn it is

driverless rides in all of the test markets, just three months after getting the green light to operate 24/7 in san francisco. the company tweeted they have decided to pause operations across all its fleets, while it reflects on how to earn public trust. this comes a week after the california dmv ordered cruise to pull the robotaxis from the streets, accusing them of withholding video from a san francisco crash that left a pedestrian badly hurt. another car hit the woman first, throwing her into the path of the car which then dragged her down the street as it tried to pull over. cruise also says their decision isn't related to any new on road incidents and supervised rides can continue as long as they have a backup driver at the wheel. cruise has been using austin and phoenix as testing grounds for the robotaxis. now we have to worry about

possible fire dangers this weekend, a red flag warning has been issued for tomorrow as recent rain has helped more vegetation grow which means more potential fuel for any fires. add to that high wind and low humidity, and it is definitely concerning. >> all of this fuel is just ready, waiting to be either watered or burned. so we are hoping this weekend doesn't produce any significant fires or any significant vegetation fires that we have to go out and fight. the community can help us out. have an escape plan. make sure you have a go bag with all your essentials, medications, pets, things of that nature. and if and when something does happen, please don't wait till the last minute to evacuate. please evacuate

as soon as you can, it would help out the emergency responders and the fire crews. >> for more on what to expect this weekend, let's send it over to jessica burch. >> the daytime highs are sitting in the 60s, that is kind of chilly for us, many of us celebrating halloween this weekend and it's going to be brisk and breezy for many of us. 60s and this afternoon, all the way up into the east bay with a very similar forecast, nice and cool for us for our friday forecast that i want to talk about what is happening right around the corner. we had fire weather watch is issued for much of the bay area and it's starting to get upgraded to red flag warnings by the national weather service. as we head into the weekend forecast, the low pressure moves its way in from the north, we have a high-pressure offshore and those systems match together and with us right in the middle, that allows for windy conditions from the north. i want to show you that on this map, starting off with tomorrow

afternoon. this is when it starts to kick up, around dinnertime, 20-mile-per-hour sustained wind and into the overnight, look at areas like stinson beach right here, all the way up into sonoma. wind anywhere from 50 miles per hour just into the early morning hours and keep in mind, many of us have decorations outside, so this is a good time to secure those objects, maybe tie them down or just bring them inside before the weekend. this will last through sunday afternoon and match that with low relative humidity, that is the reason why the fire danger index is so high as we head into sunday morning. this is what it's looking like although he into early sunday morning, the wind pushing in from the north, the dry conditions lasting, this is on a scale from one to 10. in areas like sonoma, stinson beach, those are the areas i'm keeping a close eye on, specifically wine country. we hit a nine on that

scale in areas like sonoma. we have to be extra cautious heading into this weekend. i want to show you the next seven days, heading into next week, right around the corner it is halloween, luckily it is going to be dry. we are expecting sunny skies for this weekend despite the fact that it is still kind of cool and brisk. we will see gusty conditions throughout the weekend, so gear up for that. into next week, the wind will die down and partly cloudy skies returning to the bay area. the 49ers take on the bagels -- bangles, and the team got some good news about quarterback brock purdy. >> brock purdy's chances of playing this sunday appear to be a lot higher than they were on wednesday, he was at practice thursday as he continues to try to get clear from concussion protocols before this weekend's game against the bengals. no player has been cleared from protocols in less than one week but
