business empire in new york. first, the gaza strip split in two. israel says it has divided the besieged territory as ground troops prepare to enter gaza city. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. outrage is growing over israel's bombardment of gaza and the growing civilian death toll. but israel says no cease-fire until the hostages are freed. the israeli defense forces says it stopped firing on certain areas to allow palestinians to move away from heavy fighting. the u.s. military says a guided missile submarine has arrived in the middle east. a message of deterrence to keep the war from spreading. and cia director williams burns arrived in israel joining secretary of state antony blinken in the region on a diplomatic tour. cbs' doug williams joins us from tel aviv, good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning.

it was a quiet weekend here in tel aviv until just last night when two barrages of hamas rockets were fired into the city center, intercepted by the iron dome, as the violence and diplomatic negotiations continue. cbs news has confirmed cia director william burns is in the middle east amid the ongoing israel and hamas conflict. it comes as secretary of state antony blinken wraps up his trip to the region. the secretary made several stops over the weekend including visits to the west bank where he met with the leader of the palestinian authority, and to baghdad where officials say he discussed attacks on u.s. personnel in iraq. >> we're working very hard to make sure that the conflict in gaza does not escalate, does not spread to otherplaces. >> reporter: the biden administration says it supports humanitarian pauses in the fighting to assist with hostage release and aid efforts. israel's prime minister has rejected calls for a temporary cease-fire until hamas releases its hostages.

israel's military has released video saying they've opened a humanitarian corridor to allow civilians to move from northern to southern gaza. over the weekend, israeli strikes hit an ambulance convoy, the refugee camp, for the third time, and another camp killing dozens according to hamas. israeli officials say hamas uses civilians as human shields. they have released this video claiming to show hamas rocket launch pits near a children's pool and playground. this comes as plans resume to evacuate foreign nationals from gaza into egypt. more than 100 australian evacuees arrived in sydney just yesterday. >> we never thought we would make it out alive. >> reporter: according to the biden administration, more than 300 americans have made it out of gaza. and the presence of that ohio class submarine is notable. the u.s. military often has submarines in the waters wherever the u.s. military has aircraft carriers, but submarines are rarely discussed publicly. so that announcement from

central command may very well have been intended to send a message. anne-marie? >> doug williams in tel aviv, thank you so much, doug. the war taking place half a world away is having a big impact on the presidential race here at home. while the election is still a year off, new polling suggests former president trump has a slight edge over president biden. here's cbs' skyler henry. mr. president, any progress on a humanitarian pause? >> yes. >> reporter: president biden over the weekend signaled that there could be a break in the fighting from israel's war with hamas to get more aid in and more hostages out of gaza. as top administration officials overseas looked to tamp down concerns about a wider conflict in the region -- >> the humanitarian pause or pauses could make a positive difference. >> reporter: lawmakers on capitol hill are expressing their concerns about israel's deadly siege. >> they're an independent country. but we have a right to say, sorry, you need a new military strategy.

of americans who think things are going badly in the country has hit a high for the year at 73%. skyler henry, cbs news, the white house. former president trump is expected to take the stand in just a few hours at his civil trial in new york. he's accused of fraudulently inflating the value of his properties to obtain loans and other benefits. john dias from cbs new york joins us from the court house in lower manhattan. john, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, too, anne-marie. while the former president has been calling this civil lawsuit case a witch hunt, we can tell you this morning that a lot is at stake for him today. in just a few hours from now at 10:00 this morning, the former president, donald trump, is expected to testify in a trial that could cost him $250 million and bar his company from operating in new york. the testimony will help a judge determine how much the trump organization owes after trump

and his executives were found liable for inflating trump's net worth and the value of his assets like trump tower in order to get favorable financing. now last week when mr. trump's sons eric and donald trump jr. testified, they told the court that while running the trump organization, they relied on accountants and the legal team to verify documents before signing off on them. we can also tell you that trump's eldest daughter, ivanka trump, she is set to testify in this case on wednesday. and the civil lawsuit case is expected to run through december. anne-marie? >> all right, thank you very much. overseas now, russia says that it concluded or conducted a successful test launch of a nuclear-capable ballistic missile from a new nuclear submarine. russia released video of the launch yesterday, but it's not clear when it took place. the defense ministry said the missile was fired under water in the white sea off russia's northwest coast.

it comes days after president vladimir putin revoked moscow's ratification of a global nuclear test ban. back home, a san jose, california, police officer involved in a controversial shooting resigned after the discovery of racist texts. mark mcnamara shot and wounded k'aun green last night after -- rather, last year, after green said he disarmed someone involved in a fight inside a restaurant. police say green was backing out the door, holding a confiscated weapon in the air, when he was shot. the police chief said mcnamara resigned last week after an investigation revealed racist texts including some making light of the shooting. green reacted yesterday. >> he felt nowhere in his heart that he was wrong. it's pretty scary to me. >> green's attorneys are demanding that mcnamara be charged with hate crimes. and much of the u.s. is

"the cincinnati enquirer" reports an 11-year-old boy was killed in a mass shooting in the city. the drive-by shooting friday night near a playground also injured four other children and an adult. police say someone in a vehicle fired 22 shots into a crowd of kids. family and friends gathered over the weekend for a balloon release to honor the murdered boy. officials have not released any information about the suspect, and they also say it's too early to know if the shooting was random or targeted. the "associated press" says a hostage situation at hamburg airport in germany ended with a man in custody and his 4-year-old daughter safe. authorities say a 35-year-old turkish man was arrested yesterday about 18 hours after he drove his vehicle through the airport gates with his daughter. she was not hurt. police say he reportedly took his daughter by force from her mother. the airport was evacuated, and flights were canceled during the standoff. and the "new york post" says a california woman disappeared

mulling the studio's latest offer, plus, two big food recalls parents need to hear about. matt pieper has today's cbs "money watch." >> reporter: wall street ended last week even higher to add more gains to its best week in nearly a year. the dow gained 222. nasdaq up 184. s&p gaining 40 points. if you have these dinos in the freezer, don't eat them. tyson foods is recalling nearly 30,000 pounds of dinosaur shaped chicken nuggets after some people reported finding small pieces of metal in them. the bags have a best if used by date of september 4th, 2024, and were sold in several states including alabama, california, and illinois. more fruit pouches for kids are being recalled for lead poisoning. the usda says at least seven children in five states have gotten sick so far from cinnamon applesauce and other fruit puree pouch products. they're made by schnucks and weiss chains but sold at many

some 50,000 runners took part in the new york city marathon. tamirat tola, an ethiopian, won the men's race breaking the all-time record for the course by eight seconds and finished the 26.2-mile race in two hours, four minutes, and 58 seconds. helen obery from kenya won the women's race. the finish line wasn't the only goal for one runner. vanessa martin stopped at mile 18 with the ultimate surprise for her girlfriend. she proposed. the now-engaged couple has been together for five years. and it was a bittersweet homecoming for damar hamlin. the buffalo bills safety was back in cincinnati for the first time since he went into cardiac arrest while playing against the bengals in january. hamlin met with the ten-person medical team he credits with saving his life. he was there to announce scholarships named after each one of them that will help
