a defense official tells cbs news the latest u.s. air strikes in syria sunday likely caused casualties. previous strikes have come against weapons storage areas, but this was on a safehouse and a training area. the strikes come after a number of attacks on bases housing u.s. troops in iraq and syria. a less than marvelous open at the box office for "the marvels." taking in about $47 million, this 33rd installment is the lowest ever for a marvel movie. for more, download the cbs news app on your cell phone or connected tv. i'm matt piper, cbs news, new york. it's monday, november 13th, 2023. this is the "cbs morning news." stunning decision. senator tim scott abruptly drops out of the republican race for president, surprising his donors and campaign staff. first, gaza's largest

hospital under siege. heavy fighting raging outside of what israel calls a hamas command center. the hamas-run health ministry says it's putting the lives of dozens of premature babies at risk. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. right now israeli forces appear to have gaza's embattled al shifa hospital surrounded. the world health organization said it lost communications with contacts there. the israeli military released a video they say shows soldiers dropping off fuel. they say hamas blocked the hand-over, which they deny. u.s. officials say negotiations to free the more than 200 hostages are intense and ongoing. as we learn, a 3-year-old american girl is among them. the u.s. carried out a third round of air strikes in syria targeting iran-linked facilities in just over two weeks.

doug williams starts us off now this morning in tel aviv. good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning to you. the situation in gaza hospitals as you mentioned, remains dire, and the disagreement over whether israeli forces deliver badly needed fuel reaches beyond just the two sides in this conflict. it's another example that this isn't just a war on the ground but a war over optics and perception. multiple u.s. officials tell cbs news the negotiations are under way to free the hostages taken bay hamas and other terror groups after the deadly october 7th attacks. >> the negotiations are delicate. they're high stakes. >> reporter: two officials say one sticking point is that hamas has not produced a list of hostages it holds or would be able to free as part of a deal. the white house has confirmed a 3-year-old american is among the kidnapped. in an nbc news interview, prime minister benjamin netahyahu was asked if there's a potential deal. >> there could be, but i think the less i say about it the more i'll increase the chances that

it materializes. >> reporter: as diplomatic negotiations continue on several fronts, the situation inside gaza city hospitals, we're told, is increasingly dire. caught in the crossfire is gaza's largest hospital, al shifa, which the world health organization says is no longer able to function with deaths mounting. israel's military released video they say shows 300 liters of fuel, a relatively small amount, being dropped off near the hospital to help with operations. they accuse hamas of setting up operations there and blocking hospital workers from collecting it. meanwhile, the u.s. has carried out strikes against an iran-linked training facility and safe house in syria. defense secretary lloyd austin says the strikes were in response to attacks on u.s. service members there and in iraq. and tensions in the north continue to lead to sporadic violence there. we're told this morning that rockets fired from lebanon into israeli territory led idf forces

to attack an armed units in -- armed unit in response. anne-marie? >> all right, doug williams in tel aviv, thank you. and we are learning that five u.s. service members were killed when a helicopter crashed during a routine refueling training mission. the u.s.' european command said it happened friday in the eastern mediterranean sea. a u.s. official confirmed to cbs news that service members where special operations were deployed in case an evacuation of lebanon or israel was ordered. breaking overnight, a shocking announcement from tim scott. he is dropping out of the race for the republican presidential nomination after failing to grain traction in the polls. naomi ruchim with more. this announcements even surprised his own campaign staff. >> reporter: sources say tim scott's staff was completely caught offguard. in fact, just 13 minutes before he dropped out of the race on live television, his campaign had sent out a

fundraising email asking voters to make donations. as scott himself explained, he simply did not think he had enough support from voters to keep trudging toward the nomination. just two months shy of the iowa caucuses, republican tim scott is out of the running for his party's nomination. >> i am suspending my campaign. >> reporter: the south carolina senator made the announcement on fox news last night after abruptly canceling all of his campaign stops in iowa over the weekend when he came down with the flu. sources say it came as a shock to scott's campaign staff. >> i think the voters who are the most remarkable people on the planet have been really clear that they're telling me not now, tim. >> reporter: though scott was outpacing most other candidates in terms of fundraising, recent polling put him in a distant fifth place behind frontrunner former president donald trump. trump continues to dominate the field while other republicans are tirelessly trying to catch up.

many showing support for israel amid the war in gaza. on a visit to the country, gop candidate chris christie stopped at one of the sites of the hamas terror attacks. >> we can't ask israel to stand down if they believe there is still a legitimate violent threat against them and their people. >> reporter: in iowa late last week, florida governor ron desantis condemned anti-semitism on the campuses of american universities. >> if you have foreign students on visas that are out there protesting in favor of hamas, i'm canceling their visas and sending them home. i don't have time for that. >> reporter: a fourth republican primary debate is set for the remaining candidates next month. as of this morning, tim scott has not endorsed another candidate and said he has no immediate plans to do so. when asked about the possibility of joining another ticket as a vice presidential contender, he brushed off the idea saying becoming vp has never been on

his to-do list for there -- for this campaign. anne-marie? >> all right. naomi ruchim, thank you very much. donald trump jr. is expected back on the witness stand today in the new york fraud trial against his father and the family and their company. lawyers for the president -- for president trump, former president trump, will begin their defense today. after the prosecution rested its case last week. trump's oldest son testified he never worked on his father's financial statements and left the accounting to others. the trumps deny any wrongdoing. with five days left to avert a government shutdown, house speaker mike johnson is pitching a new plan. his proposal would fund the government into next year, but it's already drawing criticism from both parties. natalie brand has details from the white house. >> reporter: house speaker mike johnson faces his first big test this week revealing over the weekend a proposal for a two-step stopgap funding measure.

the first bill would extend money for veterans' programs, transportation, housing, agriculture and energy until january 19th. the second would fund the rest of the government including defense until february 2nd. house foreign affairs chair michael mccaul of texas was asked on "face the nation" whether republicans have the votes. >> there's no choice here. the world is on fire from where i sit. >> reporter: already some gop hard-liners are pushing back, upset the continuing resolution does not include cuts to funding levels. it also doesn't include emergency aid for israel, ukraine, or the southern border, setting the stage for a separate fight. and any plan will require compromise with the democratic-led senate. >> i don't like what the house is talking about. but i'm willing to listen. >> reporter: while the politics play out, the american federation of government employees says its members are once again on notice and on edge. >> they've got families to support, they've got kids to support. the holidays are coming up. cold weather's coming up. >> reporter: the house proposal could get a vote on the floor as

former fashion mogul was convicted in canada. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the toronto star" reports a canadian jury found peter nygard guilty on four counts of sexual assault. five women accused the now-82-year-old of sexually assaulting them. the incidents allegedly happened at his toronto headquarters between the 1980s and 2005. he was acquitted on one count of sexual assault and a charge of force bell confinement. he denies the allegations and faces additional charges in canada and new york. "the detroit free press" the suspect in the stabbing of a synagogue leader was released without charges. the body of samantha woll was found outside her home last month. authorities have said there's no evidence the attack was motivated by anti-semitism. multiple sources told "the free press" that the suspect, who was arrested last week, was close to woll and attended her funeral. he was released from custody friday. the "new york times" reports

mt. etna is acting up again. the tallest and most active volcano began spewing lava and ash over sicily yesterday. a nearby airport remained open despite the volcano's activity. iceland is preparing for a possible volcanic eruption. there's been a series of earthquakes and evidence of magma spreading underground toward a fishing town about 30 miles southwest of the capital reykjavik. about 3,000 residents have already been evacuated. one of iceland's maintain tourist spots, the blue lagoon, was closed. some scary moments for the residents of an italian seaside town after a lion escaped from a circus. residents were warned to stay inside while authorities searched for the lion. after several hours a police helicopter used infrared cameras spotted it in a rural area. it was caught and returned to the circus. dior is reaching out to babies and a fruit recall to know about. here's matt pieper with today's

cbs "money watch." >> reporter: stock fufs futures not looking so hot after moody's lowered its u.s. credit rating from stable to negative. as for "wall street journal," numbers on friday, they were really good. the dow gained 391. nasdaq was up 276. s&p taking in 67. you probably want to can this cantaloupe. arizona produce company tru fresh is recalling its cantaloupes over salmonella concerns. the melons were sold between october 16th and 23rd in packaged cardboard containers in at least ten states and canada. so far there have been no illnesses reported. a less than marvelous open for "the marvels." it opened with $47 million, less than a third of its predecessor "captain marvel" and is the new low for the company. it's the first led by three women and the first directed by a black woman. is that a baby in dior? the luxury fashion brand has launched a new line of infant skin care.

it's called baby dior. they're touting it as a line for little ones. if you feel like respect toing some bucks, how about a $230 bottle of scented water or a moisturizer for your baby's face and body for $115. that's your cbs "money watch" report for this monday morning. i'm matt pieper, cbs news, new york. the popular weight loss drug wegovy cut the risk of serious heart problems by 20%, according to an international study. the results show weekly injections prevented heart attack, strokes, and heart-related deaths. wegovy is a high-dose version of the diabetes treatment ozempic. the study tested wegovy in people without diabetes. if you are getting ready to travel for the thanksgiving holiday, listen up -- aaa predicts more than 55 million americans will travel 50 miles or more over the holiday travel period. it's the third-highest thanksgiving forecast since aaa began tracking holiday travel in 2000. almost five million people will fly.
