the day of the terror attack. and let the holiday crush begin. travelers get an early jump on the thanksgiving getaway. but could a cross-country storm disrupt your plans? good morning, good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with the death of former first lady rosalynn carter. she died yesterday at her home in plains, georgia, just two days after going into hospice care. mrs. carter was 96 years old. former president carter released a statement, calling rosalynn his equal partner in everything. no other first couple lived longer after leaving the white house. and no first couple was married longer. cbs's natalie brand looks back at the life of a ground-breaking american woman. >> reporter: rosalynn carter was the type of first lady the country had never met before, not just an adviser to her husband, but a political partner in the white house. >> i like to know what's going on. jimmy has always involved me. >> reporter: she was the first

of the first ladies to sit in on cabinet meetings, as well as briefings from the national security council, and she acted as the president's emissary abroad, mostly on visits to latin america. >> my role was more one of a sounding board for jimmy. he could explain the issues to me, and in the process think them through. >> born in plains, georgia, at age 18, she married jimmy carter, the couple had four children and ran the peanut business and ran jimmy's campaign to be the governor of georgia and the successful 1976 run for the white house. as first lady, her top domestic cause was mental health care. she chaired the president's commission to promote better services and to protect those with mental illness from discrimination. she continued that work after leaving the white house and also advocated for better support for america's senior, taking that battle to capitol hill.

>> we face a national crisis, especially for our elderly citizens. >> she was a full partner in the activities of the carter center, which the couple launched after leaving the white house, to promote conflict resolution and advanced human rights. she worked alongside her husband, with habitat for humanity, to build homes for the poor. >> betty ford was my friend. >> in 2011 she paid tribute to another first lady and her friend betty ford. >> honestly gave hope to others every single day. >> reporter: the former first couple continued to call plains home, facing health challenges together in their later years, when the family announced that at age 95, rosalynn carter had dementia, she hoped sharing the news would help increase mental health and issues she advocated for much of her long life. natalie brand, cbs news. >> tributes are pouring in for rosalynn carter. president biden praised her as

he was boarding air force one last night. >> they are really an incredible family. they brought so much grace to the office. he had integrity. still does. and she did, too. imagine, they were together 77 years. > barack and michelle obama honored mrs. carter with tributes on social media, saying her life is a reminder no matter who you are, our legacy is measured not in awards or accolades but in the lives we touch. former president george w. bush recalled her devotion to her husband, there was no greater advocate of president carter, and their partnership set a wonderful example of loyalty and fidelity. and bill and hillary clinton said thanks to her mental health advocacy, more people live with better care and less stigma. because of her early leadership in childhood immunization, millions of americans have grown up healthier. and through her decades of work at the carter center, and with habitat for humanity, she spread hope, health, and democracy

across the globe. >> there will be three days of service to honor rosalynn carter's life, it begins monday, next monday, rather, with a wreath-laying ceremony at georgia southwestern state university. she will then lie in repose at the jimmy carter presidential library, and museum, where the public can pay their respects. tuesday, a tribute service will be held at emory university, followed by her funeral and interment on wednesday. now to the israel-hamas war. as fighting rages in gaza, both sides appear close to a deal to free some hostages. the idf said it found a tunnel under the besieged al-shifa hospital complex which includes a sniper hold and a blast proof door. health officials say 31 premature babies were moved out of that hospital to another one near the egyptian border. cbs's wendy gillette joins us here in new york with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. more than 250 trauma patients

still remain at al-shifa hospital in gaza, some with severely infected wounds but several dozen newborns have been evacuated. their conditions are not good. according to the hospital's director, with some battling dehydration, hyperthermia and sepsis. and the efforts to free hostages in gaza continue this morning. the top biden administration official says they are closer than ever to reaching a deal between israel and hamas to release some of the hostages. >> on an issue as challenges and sensitive as this, the mantra nothing is agreed to everything is agreed does apply and we don't yet have an agreement on place. >> reporter: in a "washington post" op-ed, president biden said he and his team are working hour by hour to get the hostages released, and he pushed for a two-state solution. israeli defense officials have released new images that they say prove that hamas had terrorist infrastructure at the al-shifa hospital, which the terror group denies. the israelis also showed alleged videos of hostages being moved

inside the hospital. >> israeli defense forces has a moral obligation to bring everyone, every one of our hostages home. we will not rest until we do. >> reporter: hamas is believed to have taken 240 hostages during the deadly october 7th attacks in israel. yesterday survivors of the music festival were able to look for the personal items they and their loved ones left behind. >> we set up the place here to find belongings and sentimental objects. >> reporter: back in gaza, the tiniest survivors of the war-torn region, dozens of premature palestinian babies were evacuated from the al siffa hospital and will receive medical care in egypt today. at this point more than two-thirds of gaza's 2.3 million residents have fled their homes. bad weather, including cold, wind and rain in the region is worsening the already difficult conditions for the displaced.

also, this weekend, iran linked rebels in yemen say they hijacked an israeli linked cargo ship in the red sea and took 25 crew members hostage. >> wendy gillette in new york, thank you very much. breaking overnight, u.s. defense secretary lloyd austin makes an unannounced visit to ukraine, arrived in kyiv for a series of meetings with senior leaders as a show of solidarity. this is the second trip to kyiv since russia invaded the country in february of last year. thanksgiving is just three days away. and the travel rush is well under way. the weather may wreak havoc on some people's plans a severe weather outbreak is likely across parts of the south on monday, with powerful storms expected from eastern texas through louisiana, and arkansas, and eventually into mississippi. as this large storm system moves east, it will bring wet, windy weather, to much of the east, tuesday and wednesday. cbs's reed cowan has more on the

holiday travel from busy l.a.x. >> reporter: call it a sprint before thanksgiving dinner. only this rush won't burn calories, as passengers wait in long lines, los angeles international airport, and all across the country. >> it is so busy, and i just want to make sure that we have an easy travel. >> reporter: this weekend, a number of scheduled flights is up 13%, according to the faa, and what could be the busiest holiday travel period in nearly 20 years. aaa's doug shupe. >> a lot of people are trying to get out of town early to avoid the heavy, heavy congestion at the terminals on tuesday and wednesday. >> reporter: flier michael devine got the warning and arrived early. >> you are always warned, get to the airport, it will be crazy and for us, we will keep our fingers crossed. >> reporter: fingers cross and flier's wallets stressed. >> how much did you pay for your ticket? >> $700. >> $600. >> it was close to $700. >> yes, just for one way. >> reporter: the average cost of a domestic airline ticket, $681.

that's up 5% from last year. for travelers not willing to pay for pricey flights, gas prices nationwide are down, from last year, averaging $3.31 a gallon. >> for the big holidays, taking the automobile was the number one mode of transportation, it is also the most economical for families. >> reporter: no matter how you make it to the thanksgiving table, the cost of the traditional dinner is 4.5% lower, which takes the sting out of getting there. >> 100% worth it. >> so get this. the busiest day to fly is going to be wednesday. but for you drivers out there, if you hit the road on wednesday, experts say leave by 11:00 a.m., to avoid what will be bumper to bumper traffic. reed cowan, cbs news, los angeles. and just in time for thanksgiving, and that travel frenzy, a major los angeles freeway is set to reopen today. the mile-long stretch of interstate 10 near downtown l.a. has been closed for more than a week, because of an arson fire. the elevated freeway is reopening weeks ahead of

right wing populist javier milei has won the argentina presidential election, compared to donald trump, promised drastic changes to deal with soaring inflation and rising poverty. his plans include shutting the central bank, ditching the peso, and slashing spending. the texas tribune says donald trump has picked up the endorsement of the state's republican governor. trump attended an event near the u.s./mexico border yesterday, with governor greg abbott. the front-runner for the republican nomination also visited the texas national guard. he has pledged to crack down on immigration if elected next year. and the kansas city star reports a school forced an 8-year-old native american boy to cut his hair. the aclu is now calling on the girard school district to end the policy that bars long hair for boys, saying it violates the state and federal laws. a board of education is set to review the policy next month. well, still to come, no gobbling these turkeys. we will meet the thanksgiing
