we have seen the dangers of lithium batteries . most recently a person suffered serious burns when a scooter

sparked the flames in san francisco. over the past few years, we've seen a number of teslas catch fire while charging in garages or even just sitting on the street . in june, a home caught on fire after a lithium battery was left charging in the garage. yet another battery sparked a fire. >> reporter: first there is a click in and 18 seconds later , sparks fly and a fire starts due to a lithium-ion battery. within minutes, this garage was burning. >> i came out when the smoke was coming out. >> reporter: chase lives across the street and said thankfully his neighbor saw it first. >> kudos to him.

>> reporter: the fire started before noon on saturday. the family was home and called 911. as they evacuated they could hear the batteries exploding. thankfully firefighters were able to get there fast and prevent the fire from spreading into the house. >> it was confined to a lithium-ion battery charger . we are not 100% sure if it was the charger or the battery that have the problem. >> reporter: this isn't the first battery fire we have seen lately. this home burned this summer as did this repair shop in new york city, killing two people. >> we have to make sure we are using them safely. >> reporter: experts say don't mix-and-match with off ramp chargers and don't put lithium chargers on extension cords. plug them directly in. the sixth consumer product safety commission had more than 200 reports of fires or overheating of batteries last year.
