just minutes before it was set to expire. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. those negotiations came down to the wire with last-minute disagreements over which hamas hostages should be freed. the latest group released yesterday on the sixth day of the pause included an american citizen among the 16 hostages. this as the bibas family waits for word on the fate of their loved ones which includes the youngest hostage. 10-month-old kfir, his 4-year-old brother and their mother. israel is trying to confirm hamas' claims that they were all killed in an israeli air strike. and while there's a cease-fire in gaza, violence broke out this morning in jerusalem. police say two gunmen opened fire at a bus stop. as many as three people may have been killed. in the west bank, shocking video emerged showing the shooting of two palestinian boys. the palestinian ministry of health says they were killed by idf soldiers. the israeli military says its

troops fired on people who threw explosives at them. shanelle kaul joins us now with the latest developments in the middle east. good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning. news of this extension was announced by qatar. the country has been leading mediations between the two side. the deal would continue on the same terms, exchanging prisoners for hostages, and allowing several hundred more humanitarian aid trucks into gaza. the temporary cease-fire between israel and hamas has stretched into a seventh day as secretary of state antony blinken returned to the region for a third time since the war began. >> we have been focused relentlessly on trying to secure the release of hostages. >> reporter: yesterday hamas handed off a sixth group of hostages. among them was one israeli american woman, 49-year-old liat benin. >> i talked with her mother and father, and they're very appreciative, and things are moving well. she'll soon be home with her

three children. >> reporter: benin's husband remains in captivity. on capitol hill yesterday, the relatives of hostages urged the u.s. government to do more to bring their loved ones home. >> time is ticking, and it's not in our favor. >> reporter: hamas tells cbs news it is willing to provide evidence for new claims that hostages that hostages shiri bibas and her 10-month-old and 4-year-old sons were killed by an israeli air strike in gaza. israeli defense forces say they are now investigating. in the west bank, crowds gathered to greet a group of 30 palestinian prisoners released from israeli prisons yesterday. israeli officials say at least three people were killed and several others injured when two gunmen opened fire near a bus stop in jerusalem this morning. the shooting suspects were reportedly neutralized at the scene. after his meetings with israeli officials this morning, secretary of state antony blinken will meet with palestinian leader mahmoud abbas

in the west bank. anne-marie? >> shanelle kaul in new york. thank you very much. and mow to the death of former secretary of state henry kissinger. the german-born american statesman died yesterday at his home in connecticut. he was 100 years old. kissinger became a household name in the '70s as he worked to end the vietnam war and also worked to ease tensions during the cold war. skyler henry looks back on his life. >> reporter: henry kissinger rose to the heights of american government and helped steer u.s. foreign policy through a turbulent era. he served as national security adviser, secretary of state for two presidents, and won the nobel peace prize. kissinger was born heinz alfred kissinger in furth, germany, in 1923. as a teenager he moved to the u.s. with his family to flee the nazis and later returned as a u.s. soldier. after world war ii he went to

harvard as a student, then as a professor of government. in 1968, president nixon tapped him to be his national security advisor. in that role, kissinger instituted the policy of detante to ease tensions with the soviet union. he also secretly traveled to china to foster a new u.s. relationship. the result was an historic 1972 summit that ended more than two decades of hostility between the two countries. a year later, egypt and syria launched a surprise attack on israel. now secretary of state, kissinger continued his diplomatic travels which became known as shuttle diplomacy. he personally met with various leaders in the middle east and helped negotiate an end to the yom kippur war. >> no area of the world is it more difficult to promote a just and lasting peace. >> reporter: but the most pressing u.s. foreign policy issue was vietnam.

in 1970, kissinger began secret negotiations with the north vietnamese hoping to end u.s. involvement in the war. >> we have brought them to this point with considerable difficulty and with considerable anguish. >> reporter: the brokered deal earned kissinger and the north vietnam leader the nobel peace prize. the anticipated cease-fire didn't stick. in a conversation with nixon, captured on tape, kissinger made a blunt proposal to get north vietnam back to the bargaining table. >> i would then recommend that we tart bombing the bejesus out of them within 48 hours. >> reporter: kissinger remained a powerful voice in the white house even after nixon resigned during the watergate scandal. as secretary of state under president ford, kissinger saw saigon fall in 1975 that effectively ended the war in vietnam. he also enjoyed his role as a celebrity. he was often seen on the town

socializing with celebrities like lauren bacall and elizabeth taylor. one of his most famous quotes, "power is the ultimate aphrodisiac." even into his 90s, kissinger advised the obama administration and offered commentary on international affairs with his intellect and experience sought after until his death. skyler henry, cbs news, washington. reaction poured in after kissinger's death was announced. former president george w. bush said "america has lost one of the most dependable and distinctive voices on foreign affairs. i have long admired the man who fled the nazis as a young boy from a jewish family and then fought them in the united states army." cindy mccain, the u.s. diplomat and widow to the late senator john mccain, said "henry kissinger was ever present in my late husband's life. while john was a prisoner of war and in the later years as a senator and statesman. the mccain family will miss his wit, charm, and intelligence terribly." kissinger remained active in

foreign affairs long after he left office meeting with chinese president xi jinping in july. xi sent a message of condolence saying kissinger was a dear old friend of the chinese people and will be dearly remembered for his sincere devotion to u.s. relations. former first lady rosalynn carter was lady to rest in plains, georgia. her husband, 99-year-old former president, jimmy carter, attended a private funeral service yesterday at the couple's small hometown church. hundreds watched a motorcade pass through town. mrs. carter, who died last week at the age of 96, was buried in view of the front porch of the home where the former president still lives. the house is expected to ote tomorrow on whe expel new york republican george santos from congress. it comes after a scathing house ethics committee report said santos broke the law by deceiving donors and using campaign funds on personal expenses. santos has also pleaded not

demonstration last night near the lighting ceremony of new york's rockefeller center christmas tree. fights broke out between protesters and police. several people were arrested. the demonstration, though, did not disrupt the 91st annual tree lighting. the 80-foot-tall norway spruce decked out with more than 50,000 lights lit up the night sky. the ceremony featured performances by cher, barry manilow, kelly clarkson, and the radio city rockettes. an alleged assassination plot in new york city, and fallout from a deadly osprey crash. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" reports japan plans to suspend its own osprey flights after a u.s. air force osprey crashed. the american aircraft went down ned during a training mission off the coast of southern japan. at least one of the eight crew members on board was killed. seven others are missing. tokyo has also asked the u.s. military to stop all ospreys operating in japan except for

those searching for the victims. "the washington post" says an indian government official directed a plot to assassinate a sikh separatist leader in new york city. that's according to a u.s. prosecutor. american officials say that they learned about the alleged plot in the spring to kill the u.s. citizen who advocated for the creation of a sovereign sikh state. authorities say they set up a sting operation with an undercover agent posing as a hit man. the indian government official was not charged or identified, but murder-for-hire charges were filed against an indian citizen arrested in the czech republic. and the "minneapolis star-tribune" says cup foods in -- and other businesses at the location where george floyd was killed are suing the city. they claim the city has neglected the area and hurt business by putting up barriers after floyd was killed by an officer in 2020. they're seeking about $1.5 million in damages. city officials say that they have offered support including

they could provide a better understanding of how planets form. the 12 days of christmas just got a little pricier, and elon musk has cursed out former advertisers. here's naomi ruchim with today's cbs "money watch." >> reporter: the markets ended mixed after the commerce department announced the u.s. economy grew faster than initially thought in the third quarter. the dow gained 13 points. the nasdaq dropped 23, and the s&p 500 dipped 4 points. elon musk had some choice words for the major advertisers distancing themselves from his social media platform x. during a "new york times" summit, the billionaire appeared to call out disney ceo bob iger telling him to go expletive himself. companies including disney, nbc, and warner bros. suspended their ads on x after musk endorsed a post citing an anti-semitic conspiracy theory. the united autoworkers union is hoping to steer more factory employees to unionize. the uaw now has its sights set on workers at tesla, toyota, honda, and others.
