and -- >> i've been dreaming of doing a billy crystal-style oscar medley since i was 10, watching billy host the oscars every year. this is real, let's go. >> honoring entertainment's best and brightest. the star-studded celebration for this year's kennedy center honorees. good morning. i'm shanelle kaul in for anne-marie green. we begin this hour with israel's ground offensive now in every part of the gaza strip. israeli forces bombed wide areas of the southern part of that territory. this after ordering civilians to evacuate. palestinians say they are running out of places to go. meantime, the idf also says it killed a hamas commander who they say was responsible for carrying out raids during the october 7th attacks. and a u.s. warship in the red sea responded to drone attacks against three separate commercial ships. they were believed to be carried out by houthis in yemen.

naomi ruchim joins us now from new york with more on this story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. those attacks in the southern red sea have heightened fears that this war could only escalate on an international level. in gaza over the weekend, the israeli military struck more than 400 hamas targets. fighting on both the ground and from the air could complicate the rescue of more than 100 hostages still missing in gaza. israeli military flares lit up the night sky over gaza followed by the sound of explosions. israel resumed its bombardment of the territory over the weekend after a week-long cease-fire ended friday. some gaza residents say they were ordered to evacuate via leaflets dropped from the sky but say there's nowhere safe to go. this palestinian man holds the body of a child in his lap. he said he was trying to evacuate his family in southern

gaza, but the israeli military didn't give them enough time. in northern gaza, these boys screamed in search of their father believed to be buried under rubble following an israeli air strike. the hamas-run ministry of health says the death toll inside gaza has surpassed 15,000. hamas is still holding about 130 hostages in custody. now many of those freed are describing their torment in detail. "we just slept and cried," recalls daniel aloni. "our girls have seen things that kids should not see." hostages also recalled being desperate for food and air in hamas' tunnels. israeli soldiers say they destroyed about 500 tunnel shafts belonging to hamas. many hidden, they say, near civilian infrastructure. >> hamas deliberately shelters themselves inside residential buildings, hospitals and schools. basically on purpose, putting civilians in the line of fire.

>> reporter: the biden administration is under increased scrutiny from some congressional democrats who are asking them to put more pressure on israel to reduce civilian casualties. they say without meaningful steps they'll vote to block u.s. aid to israel. senate majority leader chuck schumer has said the chamber could begin work on a legislative package that includes aid measures to israel as soon as this week. the israeli military said it has started using one measure directed by the biden administration -- an online map of neighborhoods telling civilians where to evacuate before a strike. >> okay, thank you so much. the hostage detainee exchanges between israel and hamas during the week-long pause in fighting is putting a spotlight on israel's controversial detention tactics. the united nations says between 500 and 1,000 palestinian children in the occupied west bank are in custody, and not

convicted of crimes. cbs' imtiaz tyab reports. >> reporter: israeli soldiers forcefully detain a group of palestinian children. across the occupied west bank, such detentions are well documented. this was filmed by the leading israeli human rights group in 2021. the youngest of the five children was just 8 years old at the time, accused of stealing parrots near an illegal jewish settlement, something the children denied. they were later released. of the palestinian prisoners freed in recent days, over 70 are children. faces of israel's decades of jailing palestinian kids through its military courts. the only developed country to systematically try minors as young as 12 through such a system. ahmed abu na'im was among the first to be released. at 16, he was arrested for stone throwing, most common charge, along with, quote, throwing a bomb or incendiary device,

charges he denies. he spent a total of 12 months behind bars. [ speaking in a global language ] >> translator: there were people there who were 12 years old. they treated us very badly after the war. >> reporter: how were they treated differently after the war? >> translator: whenver there was a prisoner coming in he looked beaten up. when we asked for medicine they didn't bring it to us. they took our blankets and pillows, they took away our clothes. on cold days they removed covers from the windows. >> reporter: research by a child rights group claims israel inflicts abuse of palestinian children in its military detention system. after consulting with hundreds of former detainees, it found 86% had been beaten. almost 70% strip searched, and 60% held in solitary confinement. >> these children, palestinian children are being tried before military courts. >> reporter: this woman advocates for kids who the u.n.

says face a conviction rate of 99%. >> there is a military judge, a military prosecutor, no communication with families. they are blindfolded, tied with their hands and their feet. >> reporter: these are children. >> yes. yes, they are. >> reporter: in a statement to cbs news, the israel prison service said, "all prisoners are detained according to the provisions of law, and that all basic rights required by law are fully applied, and that any complaints will be fully examined." you've been released from prison. what do you hope to do next? >> translator: i hope to work, build myself a house and carry on with my life. >> reporter: a young life forever changed. imtiaz tyab, cbs news, in the occupied west bank. one of the three palestinian college students in the u.s. who was shot last weekend near the university of vermont is paralyzed from the chest down.

20-year-old hasham awartini was walking with two friends when police say jason eaton shot them in a suspected hate crime. two of the men are expected to make a complete recovery, but awartini's mother says he may never walk again. >> he is tired but resolute. he's pushing himself really hard. he is now stable. he's still in acute -- an acute condition of his incomplete spinal injuri. normal functioning is something that we have no idea in he'll regain back. that is still to be seen. >> eaton has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder charges. a suspect is in custody in paris after a german tourist was stabbed to death near the near a -- near the eiffel tower. the franchise national armed with a knife and hammer wounded two other people in the attack. they say the suspect had pledged allegiance to i.s.i.s. in a video recorded beforehand. officials say the man told police he was angry about the

the climbers were on mount marapi when it spewed smoke and ash nearly two miles into the air. nearby villages were covered in ash. crews are searching for 12 others apparently still missing. there's been an arrest in the killings of three homeless men in l.a., and a deadly shooting in dallas is under investigation. those are some of the big headlines we're following on the morning "newsstand." the "dallas morning news" claims four people including a 1-year-old were shot and killed at a home in a dallas neighborhood. three adults died at the scene. a 1-year-old boy died later at a hospital. a 15-year-old girl was reported in stable condition, and police told cbs dallas that a neighbor walked into the victims' home and began shooting. the suspect has not yet been caught, and there is no word on a motive. the "los angeles times" says a suspect is under arrest in the killings of three men who were homeless. police say jerrid powell walked up to the victims in three different l.a. neighborhoods last week and shot them for no apparent reason.

powell was already in custody in connection to the death of another man in a home robbery. >> investigators say a gun found in powell's car linked him to all four shootings. he is set to appear in court today. and "the new york times" reports on air traffic controllers who were drunk and fell asleep on the job. the "times" says in the past two years, air traffic controllers have submitted hundreds of complaints to the faa hotline about dangerous staffing shortages and mental health problems. there were several reports of controllers sleeping on duty and working while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. the faa says it investigates all hotline complaints and acts on credible ones. still to come, bargain basement airline tickets. how you, too, can score $25 flights just in time for the holidays. details on this coming up in cbs "money watch." some people just know that's not gonna fit. those are the people who know to choose allstate.

the college football national championship games are now set. in a controversial decision, the playoff committee left out undefeated florida state. it's the first time an unbeaten power five conference champion has been excluded from the four-team field. here are the new year's day matchups -- michigan will take on alabama in the rose bowl. washington will play texas in the sugar bowl. a big merger in the airline industry, and the nation's highest court to decide who should pay for the opioid crisis. here's more on this in today's cbs "money watch" report with matt pieper. >> reporter: stocks gained ground on wall street as the market came off its best month in more than a year. the dow gained 294. nasdaq up 78. s&p gaining 26. the supreme court is set to hear arguments over the legality of a $6 billion bankruptcy settlement involving purdue pharma. that's the maker of the powerful
