in virginia blows up in a ball of flames, shaking the entire neighborhood. how did it happen, and why police were already on the scene. wide ping offensive. israeli troops are bombarding a city in southern gaza, the city where they believe the remaining hostages are being held. and fighting hate on campus. congress today set to grill the heads of three of the country's most prestigious universities about anti-semitic protests at their schools. good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we start with the breaking story out of virginia, a massive house explosion. well, arlington county police say the incident began when officers responded to reports of shots fired yesterday afternoon. they later determined the shots came from a flair gun. when police tried to execute a search warrant hours later, they say the suspect fired several rounds and the house exploded,

rattling the neighborhood. >> well, i was sitting in the living room watching television and the whole house shook from the sound concussion. it wasn't an earthquake kind of tremor, but the whole house -- >> i never heard a sound wave shock like that. i thought something happened on my house. >> several officers received minor injuries. it's unclear if the suspect is still alive. and now to the dramatic escalation in fighting in southern gaza. the israeli military has expanded its ground offensive and ordered a mass evacuation of the city of khan younis where tens of thousands of palestinians fled to the north. adding to the chaos, phones and networks collapsed again, making it largely impossible for residents to communicate with others in the outside world.

and they're accusing others for failing to act against those who used rape and attacks. hundreds of protesters rallied outside the u.n. as the world body held a special meeting on that issue. cbs's shanelle kaul joins us from new york with the latest developments. good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. israeli troops are now advancing on the largest city in southern gaza. this could be a decisive and deadly move in the war. once a place of refuge for palestinians fleeing the north, the city of khan younis is the latest target of israeli military strikes. is israel's military outlines the map showing evacuation zones for nearly 2 million displaced gazans, but few can see it due to a severe internet blackout. a 2-month-old wounded in an air

strike now fighting for his life. we came here to the south just like they told us, his father says. what can we do? these satellite images appear to show dozens of israeli military tanks just north of the city poised for an expanded ground offensive. khan younis is where hamas is believed to be holding 130 hostages including eight americans like 19-year-old itay chen. >> we do not have proof of life even after 59 days. >> reporter: as hoss stills escalate, there's growing concern from hostage families over the safety of their loved ones. >> we request a meeting with the war cabinet to receive updates on our family members now. now. not tomorrow. now. >> reporter: it's been four days since the temporary cease-fire ended, and u.s. officials put the blame squarely on hamas. >> right now hamas is refusing to release civilian women who should have been part of the agreement.

>> reporter: the state department says hamas does not want the women the talk about what is happening to them while in captivity. and many people in southern gaza have been trying to flee to rafah on the egyptian border, but even those shelters are now overcrowded, and though the u.s. urged israel to limit civilian casualties in its southern offensive, israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu has not given any assurances. anne-marie? >> shanelle kaul at, thank you. the white house and the governor of pennsylvania are calling a pro-palestinian protest anti-semitic. hundreds gathered outside a restaurant on sunday. one of its owners is an israeli award-winning chef. the protesters are accused of shouting anti-semitic attacks.

the presidents of harvard, mit, and the university of pennsylvania are scheduled to testify before congress today on a hearing on anti-semitism on college campuses. the session comes amid a rise in anti-semitic incidents since the war began between israel and hamas. the biden administration is investigating seven schools over alleged incidents of anti-semitism and islamophobia. ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy is set to address u.s. senators by video today on the urgent need for additional u.s. military aid for its war with russia. it comes as the white house warned congress that the u.s. will run out of money by the end of the year to send more weapons and economic assistance to ukraine. the biden administration is asking congress to approve a $106 billion foreign aid package including more than $61 billion for ukraine. another powerful storm is bringing heavy rain and strong wind, flooding, and snow to the pacific northwest, and it comes after up to 4 feet of snow fell over the weekend in utah,

colorado, and washington state. flood alerts are in effect this morning for parts of oregon, washington state, and northern idaho. this atmospheric river will bring multiple storm systems this week, drenching the region with more than 6 inches of rain in some places. and the fate of a multi-billion-dollar settlement for victims of the open point epidemic hangs in the balance. the supreme court heard arguments over whether the sackler family, the owners of the produced pharma should get immunity from lawsuits. some are calling it billionaire justice. >> we want justice. we want the sacklers in jail, but we want their money. >> reporter: cheryl juarie wants to hold the producers of pharma, the sackler family, responsible. she and other victims' families want the supreme court to approve a bankruptcy plan that

will provide up to $6 billion for treatment and programs to combat the opioid crisis including $750 million to victims and their families. >> and i do believe that was the best deal. >> reporter: but that deal has a catch. it would shield the sackler family from lawsuits even though they are not bankrupt themselves, and that has divided families who share a tragic bond. >> they need to be held accountable. >> reporter: ellen isaacs whose son died of an overdose says the deal lets the sacklers off the hook. >> give me a deal with a jury of my peers. closing the door is not going to provide any healing. >> reporter: they're urging the supreme court to reject the plan in an argument today the justices struggled. some were concerned rejecting the deal would leave many families with nothing. >> the opioid victims and their families overwhelmingly approve this plan because they think it will ensure prompt payment.

"the philadelphia inquirer" says a security guard was stabbed and killed at a macy's store in center city. police say a man attempted to steal some hats yesterday when security guards confronted him and took back the items. they say the man left, but he returned 15 minutes later and stabbed one of the guards in the neck, killing him. another guard suffered injuries to his face and arm. the suspect was later arrested. the "miami herald" says two days after brian laundrie killed gabby petito in 2021, he allegedly called his parents in a panic to tell them she was gone. the new details were contained in court documents filed by a petito family tourn. pitino was not reported missing until 13 days later when the mother alerted police.
